As a marketer, there’s no traffic source that’s more controversial than traffic exchanges. If you just do a search in Google, you’ll find tons of articles with lengthy explanations about why they’re horrible and simply don’t work. But the secret is that they actually do work.

Here’s how you can make them work for you.

What Is a Traffic Exchange?

A traffic exchange is a website where you view other users’ advertisements in return for credits. For every credit you earn, you’ll get to expose your own advertisements to someone else who is also a member of the traffic exchange. At a 1:1 traffic exchange, if you view 500 pages of other users advertisements, your own advertisements will be shown 500 members.

Traffic exchanges allow you to “surf” for credits by viewing other users’ ads or you can simply buy credits to promote your ads without surfing. Traffic exchanges may also offer other types of advertising such as banner ads and text ads that are displayed to users on the site.

Now that you understand what a traffic exchange is, let’s discuss some of the myths that people have about traffic exchanges.

Myth #1: Traffic Exchanges Deliver Poor Quality Traffic

There is a common misconception that traffic exchanges deliver poor quality traffic. An interested prospect will still get you a sale no matter where you find that prospect online.

So why do so many critics of traffic exchanges believe this?

1. They Don’t Understand the Audience

Traffic exchange users are looking to make money online, period. No, they’re not going to be interested in buying something from your ecommerce store. They definitely don’t care about your personal blog unless it’s about making money online.

So if you’re advertising anything else there, stop now because it isn’t going to work for you.

2. They Don’t Use Geotargeting

If you’re getting traffic from just about every country on earth with only a percentage of those users having access to a credit card or a PayPal account, you’re probably never going to see a sale.

That’s why the best traffic exchanges like, TrafficG, allow you to geotarget your campaigns. If you do this you’ll be able to filter out non-English speakers and people who aren’t from Tier 1 (USA, Canada, UK, Australia, etc) countries.

That’s not to say that you can’t get sales from outside of these countries, but if your budget is limited and you don’t really have an idea of how to target your offers to users outside of Tier 1 countries, it’s best to just stick to those.

Myth #2: Traffic Exchanges Have Low Conversion Rates

Another myth about traffic exchanges is that they have much lower conversion rates than other traffic sources. It may seem like you’re spending thousands of credits on your ads, but just consider the fact that most traffic exchanges also have thousands of users. That means that every user on the site may only end up seeing your ad once or twice.

Studies show that consumers are exposed to up to 10,000 brand advertisements per day. Combine that with the old marketing adage that a consumer needs to see an ad at least 7 times before deciding to take action. Finally, if Google Adwords is charging up to $54 per click for its most expensive keywords, why would you be able to get leads or sales by spending just a few pennies, which is what 1 credit in a traffic exchange is equivalent to?

The bottom line is that you need to flood traffic exchanges with your ads. It’s not enough to surf a few times and then sit back and wait for the sales to roll in.

Myth #3: No One Is Paying Attention to Your Ads Because They Are Trying to Get Traffic to Theirs

Why would people click on ads while surfing traffic exchanges? For the same reason they click on ads on any other website: they want what that ad is promoting! If your offer is highly targeted, then people will click.

Ads with videos, email signup forms, and splash pages that have buttons that can be clicked without have to scroll down on the page get the most clicks on traffic exchanges.

Now that we’ve addressed what most people do wrong, let’s talk about the right way to use traffic exchanges:

1. Read My Tutorial

2. Focus Your Advertising

Give the stats mentioned above regarding how many times consumers have to view an ad before they take action, it’s really important that you focus on just promoting 1 or 2 offers at a time with all of your traffic exchange credits. If you try to promote too many offers at once, it will be very hard for you to get significant results.

3. Don’t Send Visitors to Pages With Adsense Ads

This should be a no-brainer by now.

But traffic exchanges are not for getting you clicks on Google Adsense ads. If you do this, you’ll get banned by Google. In addition, you shouldn’t even send users to blog pages in the first place. The small amount of time that traffic exchange users will spend on your site will affect your SEO as well because bounce rate is a search engine ranking factor for Google.

Therefore, you should send users to the types of landing pages that I already discussed above only for the best results.

4. Buy Login Ads

Login ads are full-page ads that are shown to users as soon as they log into the traffic exchange. If you purchase login ads, you can ensure that your ad is seen by all of the members of the traffic exchange. In addition, users might spend more time looking at the ad than the few seconds it takes waiting for the countdown timer to expire in order to earn credits while surfing.

5. Build Your Referrals

By building your referrals on traffic exchanges, you’ll have users surfing on your behalf. This will dramatically reduce the time you need to spend surfing on your own. It will also save you money if you choose to buy credits. Finally, referrals will also make you money because you’ll get paid when they upgrade their own accounts.

However, don’t make the mistake of trying to build up your referrals on every traffic exchange. You only want referrals on the oldest and most reliable traffic exchanges. I recommend building your referrals on sites like Hungry For Hits or TrafficG simply because these traffic exchanges have loyal followings, reasonable surf ratios for free users, and plenty of Tier 1 traffic.

6. Don’t Use Ready Made Affiliate Pages Unless the Program Is Brand New

Unless you’re promoting a program that just launched, make your own unique landing page to promote your offer. This will help you stand out from the competition and you won’t have to have your signups stolen away by other affiliates who are promoting the same product or service.

In addition, a lot of programs also have extra information on their affiliate landing pages that traffic exchange users simply won’t be interested in.

You always need to assume that a traffic exchange user is not going to scroll down on a page. So you need a custom designed landing page that has all of the information that users need to make a decision about your offer appear in the surf page frame.

7.  Promote an Offer That Requires a Real Email Address

With so many offers being shown to users, it’s only natural that traffic exchange users will try to use throwaway or fake email addresses to sign up. So when you decide on an offer to promote, make sure that it is one that a user has to provide a real email for.

For example, promote programs where the user might have to sign up and create an account or use a credit card for a low-cost offer. You can also remind them on your landing page that they won’t receive whatever you’re offering unless they use a real email address to sign up.

Classified ad sites are one of the cheapest and easiest ways to promote your business opportunity online. There are many free classified sites list but I decided to compile my own since these classified websites are not well-known but have made me some sales.

The websites on this classified submission sites list also get plenty of tier 1 traffic and are especially targeted to the internet marketing, MLM, network marketing, and business opportunities niches.

Building an email list of real leads and buyers is one of the most difficult tasks of internet marketing. It has become increasingly difficult to stop fake leads because not only do you have to look out for bot signups, you also have to watch out for people who just want to see what you’re offering but don’t actually want to join your list and receive your followups.

Fortunately, there are a few ways to filter your signups so that you’re getting more real leads on your email list. Here are 5 steps to stop fake leads and make your list more profitable in the next 24 hours.

1. Get Rid of the Bots

Bot signups on your email list are fairly easy to detect. They sign up with a name that doesn’t match the email address. For example:

Name: John Smith

Email: racheladams@example.com

Clearly, John Smith is not going by the name Rachel Adams online so it’s basically a 99% guarantee that this is a bot sign up. So anytime you see mismatched email addresses like this on your list, just delete them straightaway.

Another way to get rid of the bot signups is to require a verification step on your landing page. Have the user complete a captcha or answer a challenge question before they can join your mail list.

Regarding double opt-in… Given the fact that your emails might land in the spam folder no matter how hard you work to keep them out of there, I no longer recommend using double opt-in to confirm that people really want to join your email list.

In the majority of cases, even if they really did want to sign up, the confirmation email will end up in their spam folder and you’ll never hear from them again.

2. Blacklist Temporary Email Domains

While temporary email addresses might be convenient for users that want to avoid receiving spam emails, as a marketer this simply means that you’ll subsequently send emails to someone who will never answer you again.

Temporary email addresses, or throwaway emails, are used by people who simply want to sign up to see what you’re offering. These people don’t actually want to join your email list and they most likely don’t even want to buy what you’re offering if it’s not free.

So blacklisting temporary emails from joining your email list is the fastest way to get rid of people who are freebie seekers.

All you need to do is add these domains to your autoresponder blacklist and these people won’t be able to join your email list if they are using an email address on one of these domains.

If you are using Getresponse, you will add the domain blacklist here (go to List hygiene > Blacklist):

If you are using Aweber, you will add the domain blacklist here (under your Active List go to Subscribers > Subscriber Tools > Block Subscribers):

If you use another autoresponder, simply look for instructions in your support area on how to Block Subscribers, Blacklist Subscribers, Blacklist Domains, Autoresponder Blacklist, etc.

It’s important to note that every company domain that is not a gmail.com, yahoo.com, etc is not automatically a temporary throwaway email address. So make sure that you don’t remove people from your list just because they don’t use the major email providers and prefer to instead use the email accounts on their own domains.

Now that you know that you should block temporary email address domains, I have a compiled a quick list of domains to copy and paste into your autoresponder so that you don’t have to find all of these domains yourself.

This is not a comprehensive list by any means as there are always new domains being added to these services. But this list contains enough domains to help you start blocking the majority of incoming fake temporary email address leads.

3. Email Verification to Stop Fake Leads

Even if a person signs up on your email list genuinely, there’s also a need for you to continuously update your email list to make sure that those emails are actually still working over time. If you don’t, then your emails will start bouncing off of these invalid addresses.

High bounce rates and lower open rates due to invalid email addresses tips your email service provider off that you might be sending spam emails. As your sender reputation goes down, you might run the risk of getting your account blacklisted and you won’t be able to send your campaigns any longer.

Email list verification helps to ensure that your messages are deliverable and won’t be sent to spam. The best way to do is this by using a service that performs the following steps:

• Syntax and formatting check. Ensures that email addresses are properly formatted in order to be considered as a genuine email address with that service provider (for example, the email address is a valid Yahoo email because it does not start with a number)
• Server confirmation. This step checks the DNS records of the domain name of the email address to ensure that the server is actually able to accept emails and that it won’t bounce.
• Mailbox validation. This last step of the email verification process is done by contacting the SMTP server and understands whether the mailbox actually exists by pinging the email address and waiting for the email server to deliver a response.

A service like this will have the domain names for temporary email address services preloaded so that you don’t have to worry about compiling and using a list like the one above in Step 3. However, if you are just starting out, you may not have the budget to afford this type of service so I recommend just using that list to block the domains for free.

If you’re serious about email marketing, I recommend that you do invest in an email verification service to protect your autoresponder account.

4. Clean Your List

Email list verification services can only do something about the fake non-deliverable leads. But what about those who join your lists using throwaway emails that they created on Gmail and other email service providers?

These days people like to have email addresses that they send all of those pesky ads to that they don’t want to open without unsubscribing, just in case they’ll come back to read them later (Yeah, right!).

So to get rid of these folks, who are essentially no different than fake leads, you need to clean your list regularly.

Here are my criteria that I use:

Delete people who:

1. Haven’t opened any emails in the last 30 days
2. Haven’t clicked emails in the last 14 days
3. Have opened emails in the last 30 days but have not clicked in the last 14 days

By doing this on a near daily basis, you can get people off your list who are never going to take action.

If you have people on your list that continuously open your emails and click but never buy or interact with you, make sure to send them a few emails to try and get them to reply to you before you delete them for good.

5. Grab More Leads From Your Existing Traffic

Did you know that there a ton of pre-verified real leads that you’re probably already getting and never even knew about? It might sound like it’s too good to be true, but it’s real.

In fact, there are people who visit your landing pages every day who are interested in what you have to offer but just don’t end up signing up for whatever reason. Now you can capture these leads using a clever tool called GetEmails.

Next Steps

This article is designed to help you address the problem of fake leads. However, lead quality is just as important. You also add follow up emails to determine how interested people are in your list.

When it comes to free blog content, everyone knows that copy paste from other people’s sites is a BAD idea. However, coming up with unlimited high-quality blog content for free, legally IS possible for bloggers.

If you’re looking for free content for your blog, follow the methods that I will share below which make it a lot easier to find content for your blog so you can post regularly and achieve page #1 Google rankings for your blog.

Where Do I Find Free Blog Content?

If you want to be able to publish new content regularly on your blog, you need a reliable source for free content that you have permission to use. Below are 5 places where you can find free content that is licensed for free reuse:

1. Download Free PLR Products

Use these free PLR products to upload into Spin Rewriter directly or repurpose them into new ebooks by adding your own additional content. 

What is PLR? PLR stands for Private Label Rights and it refers to products that you can resell or give away as your own. When people sign up for your subscriber lists, you should thank them by giving them something of value.

Go to YouTube and use the search filter options after entering your keywords to find videos that have Creative Commons Licensing. This means that you can use the content from these videos. To turn this video content into text content download a software called Audacity and use it to record the audio from video. 

Then go to a service called temi.com which will use an AI to transcribe the audio file to text for just a few cents. Then you can spin this content with Spin Rewriter to ensure that it is 100% unique. 

3. Use the News

Twitter: Social media sites like Twitter are useful for finding breaking stories.

If you plan to publish news articles on your site, make sure to include a disclaimer on your site about the accuracy of the stories you publish and check the sources to make sure the news story is not fake news.

4. EzineArticles

Article directories are a very old method of getting free content back from the early days of SEO. Surprisingly, there are still people submitting content to these types of sites. 

If you select from the authors that have the highest authority level on the article directory (in the case of EzineArticles that’s Diamond Level Writers), you can be assured that the original content is well-written and at least somewhat researched so that you’ll have a good starting point for fresh Spin Rewriter articles.
