]]>The post New exhibition celebrating Manchester’s underground music revolution appeared first on About Manchester.
]]>Opening on 23rd July, the free exhibition is curated by artist and screen-printer Matthew Rich and will give visitors a rare glimpse at original posters and photographs from a period that helped shape Manchester’s global reputation as a city of music and creativity.
Many of the works featured also reflect the Hacienda era and the wider club culture that defined the city at the time, with visuals and references that directly connect to this influential period.
Fittingly shown at The Refuge, the exhibition’s inspiration is echoed throughout the hotel with nods to FAC51, most notably in Suite 51 – the hotel’s top suite which takes its name and inspiration from Manchester’s club culture, with subtle design touches inspired by the Hacienda era.
Matthew Rich is a respected artist at the heart of Glasgow’s creative and music communities. In 1982, he was working as a screen-printer in Manchester, producing posters that documented and promoted the artists, club nights and venues that would come to define an era.
Matthew Rich said: “These posters were never meant to last. They were pasted onto walls, flyposted across the city and before long, covered over or torn down. Today, they offer a nostalgic glimpse of Manchester at an incredible time. They reflect the energy and determination of the people who helped shape Manchester into what it is today.”
Rhea Leach, Head of Marketing at Kimpton Clocktower Hotel, said: “As we approach 10 years of Refuge, we’re taking the opportunity to reflect on the creative spirit that has always inspired us. Matthew’s exhibition perfectly captures a moment when Manchester was reinventing itself through creativity and music, and we’re proud to showcase it as part of our programme.”
The exhibition will run from 23rd July at Kimpton Clocktower Hotel and is free to visit. Selected works from the exhibition will be available to purchase.

‘We’ve been clear with tiebacks and other measures that we want to see North Sea gas and oil continue to thrive, continue to contribute to that energy mix, but resolute in our mission that energy security and lower bills will only come by us not continuing to rely on fossil fuels but building the cheaper, renewable energy of the future as well’
Other plans expected to be announced include,Public control of water and energy companies
Lower energy bills through VAT cuts or by moving older wind and solar farms onto fixed-price contracts
-The biggest council house-building programme since the post-war era and Social care reform through a cross-party consensus

]]>This is a planned tactical measure along the Pennine Way in the Crowden area to help contain the wildfire in Derbyshire, while also supporting Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service’s response to the separate wildfire across the border.
By carefully burning vegetation in a controlled way, firefighters can remove fuel that would otherwise allow the fires to spread further.
They are warning that the controlled burn will result in increased smoke over the next 24 hours. Current easterly winds are continuing to carry the smoke plume towards Manchester.
Firefighters say
”We appreciate that this may be noticeable to residents, but please do not call our Control team to report the smoke, as they are already aware of the situation and specialist crews are carrying out this planned operation.
Please avoid the Tintwistle area and, if you are affected by smoke, keep your windows and doors closed. We appreciate the impact this may have on local communities and thank them for their patience and understanding.”

]]>Andrew Tate, 39, and Tristan Tate, 38, were arrested in Miami yesterday
They have been detained pending ongoing legal proceedings.
Charges were previously authorised by CPS following a file of evidence submitted by officers from Bedfordshire Police into allegations dating back to 2012.
The CPS has decided to prosecute Andrew Tate, 39, with seven further counts of rape, three counts of arranging or facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation, three counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and 19 additional charges for offences relating to indecent images of a child and extreme pornography.
The CPS has decided to prosecute Tristan Tate, 38, with one count of sexual assault, two counts of rape and three counts of arranging or facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation.
Following their arrest in the US, prosecutors will be seeking extradition in relation to the original 21 charges and the further charges which we have decided to prosecute.
Malcolm McHaffie, Head of the Special Crime Division at the Crown Prosecution Service, said: “We have decided to prosecute Andrew and Tristan Tate for further offences including rape, arranging or facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation and offences relating to indecent images of a child.
“These charging decisions followed receipt of a further file of evidence from Bedfordshire Police and bring the total number of alleged victims in this case to seven.
“The Crown Prosecution Service reminds everyone that criminal proceedings are active, and that these defendants have the right to a fair trial.
“It is extremely important that there be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.
“The CPS has requested the extradition of the Tates from the US. They have been arrested and await extradition proceedings to the UK.”
Assistant Chief Constable Karena Thomas said: “Officers from our major crime unit have been working closely alongside the Crown Prosecution Service and both national and international law enforcement agencies as part of this complex investigation.
“We understand the interest that this case will generate, but we would urge the public not to speculate and to allow the legal process to be carried out correctly.
“There is no place for male violence against women and girls, and we will continue to work tirelessly to support victims and investigate all reports made to us.”

]]>
The event began with sincere speeches from Bev Messinger, Chair of the Board at Your Housing Group, Jacque Allen, Chief Executive at Your Housing Group, Kate Collins, Head of Affordable Housing Delivery at Homes England, and Joel Lewis, Chief Executive of the Foyer Federation.
Their speeches highlighted the importance of investing in supported housing and creating opportunities for young people to thrive, before guests marked the occasion with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony.
However, it was the young residents from Lock 20 themselves who made the biggest impression on the day.
Following the opening ceremony, residents from Lock 20 Foyer joined young people from Your Housing Group’s other foyers and residents from Mosscare St Vincent’s foyers for a thought-provoking discussion focused on the realities facing young people today.
Chaired by Dan Whelan from Place North West, the panel featured Jacque Allen, Joel Lewis, Charlotte Norman, Chief Executive of MSV, and Councillor Susan Gambles, Cabinet Member for Housing at Wigan Council.
Young people challenged the panel with thoughtful questions and personal reflections on issues including the cost-of-living crisis, access to education and employment opportunities, mental health and the barriers many young people face when trying to build stable futures.
A clear message emerged throughout the event: more support is needed for supported housing, and high-quality schemes such as Lock 20 Foyer demonstrate what can be achieved when organisations work together with young people at the heart of decision-making.
Guests repeatedly praised the quality of the development, with many describing Lock 20 as one of the finest examples of a modern foyer anywhere in the country.
Speaking at the event, Jacque Allen, Chief Executive at Your Housing Group, said:
“Today was about celebrating a fantastic new building, but more importantly it was about listening to the voices of the young people who will call Lock 20 home.
“Their resilience and ambition shone through today. The challenges facing young people are significant, but when housing providers, local authorities and partners come together, we can do the work needed to improve support and opportunities.”

]]>The post Manchester hidden sunbed danger warning appeared first on About Manchester.
]]>The University of Manchester clinician scientists found that indoor tanning can trigger serious and sometimes debilitating skin reactions when ultraviolet (UV) radiation interacts with common medicines, foods, cosmetics and underlying health conditions.
The team are also based within the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Manchester Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) and Northen Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust.
The review revealed cases ranging from painful blistering disorders and severe rashes to flare-ups of autoimmune diseases and allergy-like reactions occurring within minutes of UV exposure.
Some patients became so ill they required hospital treatment, specialist care and, in a small number of cases, surgery.
The researchers analysed 34 scientific studies published up to May 2025 and identified 67 documented cases of photosensitivity reactions linked to recreational sunbed use.
While sunbeds are already recognised as a cause of skin cancer, the researchers say many users remain unaware that UV exposure can also trigger unexpected reactions in susceptible individuals.
The study found that a wide range of common medications were linked to adverse reactions following sunbed use.
These included antibiotics, blood pressure medicines and painkillers, alongside creams and topical treatments applied directly to the skin.
Surprisingly, everyday foods were also implicated: compounds found naturally in celery, parsnips and lime juice were associated with painful skin reactions when handled or eaten before exposure to sunbed UV radiation.
In several cases, a visit to a tanning salon triggered the first sign that a person had an undiagnosed medical condition.
One of the most commonly reported disorders was pseudoporphyria, a blistering condition that closely resembles rare diseases caused by problems in the body’s response to sunlight.
Researchers also identified cases of solar urticaria, a rare condition sometimes described as a sunlight allergy, which can cause hives and swelling within minutes of UV exposure.
The review found evidence that sunbed use may worsen symptoms in people living with systemic lupus erythematosus, or lupus, a long-term autoimmune disease known to be aggravated by ultraviolet radiation.
Young women accounted for most reported cases, although the researchers stress that anyone using a sunbed could potentially experience a photosensitivity reaction if they are vulnerable.
