The man in the hat is back. Coming this fall from DC Comics’ Black Label line is Rorschach, a 12 issue series from Tom King and Jorge Fornés.

Hrm

So. Here we are. Not even a year after Doomsday Clock finally came to an end (and kind of fizzled out), and we see DC Comics heading back into the Watchmen universe for another revival. This one is a little more pointed, a lot smaller in scope, and infinitely more polarizing.

While Watchmen fans might be cool with seeing more from that corner of the DC Multiverse, they’re very picky over what’s actually done with that set of characters.

That’s more than understandable, since Watchmen is a legitimate classic, and an icon of the industry. There’s honestly more of a likelihood that something will go wrong with a sequel of any kind than that it’ll turn out great.

Just take a look at After Watchmen and yes even Doomsday Clock for that. AW was universally met with indifference, while DC started out great, but just kind of went nowhere.

And that all brings us back around to Rorschach. The new maxi-series is planned to have a 12 issue run, and will be helmed by former Batman writer Tom King and artist Jorge Fornés. Just like the book, the team is a tad divisive as well. Not so much for Fornés, but in the case of King.

King was a house of fire when he began his time on DC’s core Batman title. He ran afoul of seemingly most Bat-fans though, by the time his run abruptly ended last year. Did he just run out of gas with the book? Maybe. And maybe Rorschach’s limited nature could remedy that.

Things are gonna get weird

So what’s the story with the man in the ink-blot mask? How is the original version of the anti-hero back, and back in the Watchmen universe no less? Well, as you’ll see in a second, the plot sounds absolutely insane.

It’s been 35 years since Ozymandias was exposed for dropping a giant telepathic squid on New York City, killing thousands and ending the public’s trust in heroes once and for all. The Minutemen are gone; only their memory lives on. Especially the infamy of Rorschach, who has become a cultural icon since Dr. Manhattan turned him to dust.

So what does it mean when Rorschach reappears as part of a pair of assassins trying to kill the first candidate to oppose President Robert Redford in decades? Follow one determined detective as he walks backward in time, uncovering the identities and motives of the would-be killers, taking him deep into a dark conspiracy of alien invasions, disgraced do-gooders, mystical visions, and yes, comic books.

Writer Tom King joins forces with artist Jorge Fornés to explore the mythic qualities of one of the most compelling characters from the bestselling graphic novel of all time, Watchmen.

DC Comics

Weird? Yes. Interesting? Yeah, that too. And of course, lest you might think that Rorschach might be free of political influence, think again. King makes a special point of starting that the book will follow in the footsteps of the original series, regarding political statements.

“Like the HBO Watchmen show and very much like the original ‘86 Watchmen, this is a very political work.” said King. “It’s an angry work. We’re so angry all the time now. We have to do something with that anger. It’s called Rorschach not because of the character Rorschach, but because what you see in these characters tells you more about yourself than about them.”

Tom King

Politics are something that most comics in general dive right into these days of course, though most usually do it quite ham-handedly. Will King make the difference and be able to pull it off here? That’s going to be interesting to watch, as will the entire series. It could be quite the tightrope walk.

We’ll see this October, when Rorschach #1 (of 12) hits the racks.

DC Comics originally said there’d be a delay on their Doomsday Clock event series. But it looks like the book will be staying on track after all. Expect it at retail on the 30th.

Doomsday?

I wouldn’t say that the reaction to a Doomsday Clock delay was all that bad honestly. DC announced not long ago that the series’ next issue wouldn’t be making its May release. Instead, it would be landing in stores this June. That would have meant that issues five and six would have run monthly in all likelihood. Yes, it was mildly annoying, but I don’t actually recall any kind of “outrage” or even mild aggravation from fans.

Still, the delay apparently didn’t sit all that well with the publisher. DC has now announced that the series will be staying on schedule.

Here’s writer Geoff Johns talking about it, and artist Gary Frank:

“Gary and I are working diligently to deliver a thought-provoking and beautifully drawn series that’s unlike anything else on the shelves today,” says Johns. “It’s incredibly important to us to keep up the quality of DOOMSDAY CLOCK, but also to deliver it on the bimonthly schedule and we intend to keep our word. Issue #5 will begin the countdown for the DC Universe as the worlds of the Watchmen and DC collide full-on. Expect to see characters known and obscure step into the spotlight. And the strangest team-up you’ve ever seen.”

Doomsday Clock #5 will be on the racks on May the 30th, and so that easy you can expect #6 to hit this July.

Here’s an unlettered tease on what’s in the upcoming installment:

Ripping a big hole in the DC universe, Doomsday Clock has been raging for a few months now. And while the books have been terrific, you actually might like DC Collectibles’ figures even more.

2 minutes to midnight

There are few comic book happenings like Doomsday Clock. It’s the kind of event book series that fans not only take special note of, but ravenously gobble up. DC recently announced that the mini-series would be transferring to a bi-monthly format. That means the issues will be spaced farther in-between, and that this is one arc that’s going to stick around for a while.

I’m not all that thrilled with event series’ that take a year to play out, but I’m not all that upset with this move. Mainly that’s because there aren’t going to be any filler issues packed into it. DC is simply spacing things out a little further. Not too shabby. It should all be heading somewhere very cool too, since Doomsday Clock is effectively merging the Watchmen into the DC Multiverse.

And all of this also means that fans are getting something else – toys. And these aren’t just any action figures either. No, this new series of Doomsday Clock figures from DC Collectibles is looking like it’s just as special as the series it’s based on.

With designs right from the mind of character designer (and Doomsday Clock artist) Gary Frank, these figures will stand in at the 7″ scale, and include a pair of brand new characters. Releasing in sets of two will be “Dr. Manhattan, Ozymandias, Rorschach and the Comedian, plus two new DC universe characters – Mime and Marionette”

These don’t have a strict release date as of yet, but DC says you can expect them to hit sometime this year. I’d imagine that’d be somewhere around the close of the series itself, which should be this fall. That’s just a guess though.

Check ’em out in the gallery below.

DC All Access talks with the publisher’s Geoff Johns about the Doomsday Clock mega-event that links the DCU to the Watchmen universe.

The end is nigh

Is the DCU as we know it coming to an end? Probably not, but that doesn’t change the impact of Doomsday Clock any. The massive event book is a first for the company, as it melds the DCU (and it’s multiverse) with the Watchmen universe.

Penned by Alan Moore, Watchmen was a runaway hit that has become legendary in the comic book world. The book took a cynical approach to superheroes, and showed a dark and gritty world that many readers hadn’t seen before.

Aside from the Zach Snyder-made film, and a set of prequel comics that debuted a few years ago though, that’s been it from Watchmen. But as of “The Button”, that all changed. It appears that the DC Universe’s recent series of time-shifts, anomalies, and reboots has been orchestrated. A master plan, so to speak, that has rolled straight out of Watchmen- and Doctor Manhattan.

Of course, he’s not the only character that’ll be appearing here (that’s gotta be Ozmandias’ hand, right?). But the Doc certainly is the biggest and most menacing. He’s heading on a collision course with the Man of Steel too. And it seems as though Superman just might have the fate of the DCU on his shoulders. Not that that’s anything new for him.

Issue #1 of the landmark book is out as of today and, as mentioned, DC All Access had a chat with Geoff Johns all about it. Have a listen, and then go grab a copy of the comic at your local comics shop.

DC is prepping what might be the biggest event in their recent history. And it’s all going to come down to Superman and Watchmen’s Doctor Manhattan.

Here’s what we know

The other day, DC’s chief creative officer Geoff Johns tweeted out that he was working on something big, something called “Doomsday Clock”. This ominous message was joined by an equally ominous pic, that of the famed Watchmen clock, but with the Superman shield at the top.

What might that mean? Could it be the end of the Man of Steel? Some odd melding of the DC timelines? A(nother) new DC timeline? A mega-event book with dozens of crossover issues and spinoffs and one-shots galore?

Well, sort of ‘yes’ to some of that, but a whole lot of ‘no’.

The facts of a major/minor event

I’m going to say it right up front here – I love how DC is planning to lay out Doomsday Clock. It’s fantastic. There isn’t a ton to buy, and the series itself is only four issues long. No muss, no fuss. And yet, even with the limited nature of it, Doomsday Clock will be a major happening, and (according to Johns) will affect the DCU for years to come.

This all comes out of a terrific interview that Johns gave to the Syfy Network, written up by Aaron Sagers. It’s there that he pretty much laid out what’ll be the nuts and bolts of Doomsday Clock, without giving anything away of course. So what should we take away from it? Plenty, and more than enough to give worried fans a breather.

For starters, Doomsday (the villain) has nothing to do with the story. So, for those of you who might be thinking he’s a factor, forget it. Secondly, and somewhat related to the aforementioned, this isn’t Death of Superman or anything like that.

Johns pretty much came out and said so, when he commented on “Doomsday” being in the title. Said Johns, “People will think the last time they heard Doomsday and Superman, he died, so what is this going to be? What is he going to go through this time? And how will it affect them going forward?”

While it’s never a safe bet in comics, I think it’s pretty much assured that this won’t be a Death scenario. Doc Manhattan is basically a god, but it seems like Superman’s life -at least- is safe. Though it sure does feel like he’ll be a changed man to some degree on the other side of Doomsday Clock. I doubt we’ll see anything major happen to his character, which just saw a revamp and seems to be well received by fans, but there’ll definitely be something different…

It also seems like the DCU itself will be different. Again though, to what degree is uncertain as of now.

Having the abbreviation for Doomsday Clock actually be DC though, could be telling. Perhaps we’ll see a melding of the grittier DCU and the more hopeful one that we got with Rebirth? Could be that DC is trying to strike a balance between the two.

If that’s the case, and DC will be changing its core universe yet again, then I’d like to see some more classic characters and stories return to canon. Namely, the Justice Society and the LEGION. It seems like both might be already on the way, but I had to mention them, as a long time fan myself.

So some telling stuff here, and honestly the whole interview is worth reading. Johns reveals quite a bit, including some spoilery stuff if you haven’t read Flash #22 yet. It’s a big issue with plenty of elements that will weigh heavily when Doomsday Clock starts. So you might want to check that out before you read through the link below. Just a suggestion.

Check out the full interview right here.

Flash #22 is going to big. Not just the final installment of the four-part Batman/Flash ‘Watchmen’ crossover, it’s also the return of Jay Garrick.

A Flash by any other name

Well… bet you didn’t see this one coming. Today we’ve got another cover from the series’ lenticular variants, which you can see to the right. Just click the image to see the effect. That’s cool and all, but we’ve also got a pretty monstrous announcement from DC.

Of course I’m referring to the return to the DC universe of the original Flash – Jay Garrick.

If you’ve been wondering about how the mystery behind Geoff Johns’ DC UNIVERSE: REBIRTH #1 continues, you’ll find out more beginning this April in “The Button,” a four part story arc that delivers the next piece of the larger, ongoing puzzle. DC has revealed three of the four lenticular covers for issues #21 and #22 of BATMAN and THE FLASH, with a mysterious fourth cover now throwing a wrench into the gears of this epic BATMAN/THE FLASH crossover!

Courtesy of the Batman team of writer Tom King and artist Jason Fabok, along with The Flash writer Joshua Williamson and artist Howard Porter, the two greatest detectives in the DC Universe unite to unravel the mystery behind a certain blood stained smiley face button stuck in the Batcave wall. However, what begins as a simple investigation soon turns deadly when the secrets of the button prove irresistible to an unwelcome third party—and it’s not who anyone suspects! This is a mystery woven throughout time—and The Dark Knight and The Fastest Man Alive will discover something completely unexpected along the way!

As the lenticular covers have rolled out, we’ve seen Batman, The Flash and Reverse-Flash all change and transform as the image moves from one character to the next. Now, with the reveal of THE FLASH #22’s main image, we see someone not even hinted at in DC UNIVERSE: REBIRTH #1! What does this mean for “The Button,” and who else might show up along the way? The ticking clock starts now… or is it completely smashed?

Speed forces and consequences

So obviously, there’s something very big happening here, and it’s not limited to Jay’s return. As the pr text says, there wasn’t even a remote hint that he was in the mix here, and yet this major DC character has suddenly reappeared.

Much like the original DCU’s Wally West, Jay is a major part of what’s been previously retconned out Flash history. As you might have guessed, he’s also a user of the Speed Force. If you’re not sure what that is, it’s a kind of universal connective tissue in DC, that certain people can tap into. Barry Allen (the current Flash) is one such person.

The Speed Force can be used to do all kinds of things. It can be used to time travel, and (apparently) even keep users safe from timeline shifts. There’s evidence of that with what happened at the end of Flashpoint. Was Jay simply hiding in it, a’la Wally? Or will he bust through from the original DCU, still out there somewhere? We don’t know the answer there just yet.

I have a feeling that it’s going to be a while till we find out too.

Although Jay’s presence will no doubt factor into DC’s books in the short term, there’s something much bigger happening here. Something that involves not just the Speed Force, but the New 52/Rebirth universe, and the Watchmen. Well, Doc Manhattan at least.

It’s out there, and probably a little pie in the sky, but I can’t help thinking that we’re heading into a return of the ‘DCU classic’. Whatever happens, this is going to be a fun year for DC fans.

Two of the best detectives that the DCU has to offer are teaming up. Their target? Who (or what) left that mysterious button in the Batcave.

Who watches…

There are a lot of questions as to what’s happening in the DC Universe right now. And those queries have been around since the beginning of the terrific Rebirth era. It was then that we saw that the Watchmen are now influencing the DCU proper in some way.

It’s been rumored, among other things, that Doctor Manhattan himself might have huge part to play. Namely, that he’s basically going to turn out to be the creator of the DCU as we know it. Or, at the very least, the one that’s been messing with it.

That aside though, we’ve got something solid here to talk about. This is only a four issue arc that’s set to play out in Batman and The Flash numbers 21 and 22, but it’s a biggie. And I have to imagine that it’s setting the stage for something much bigger.

Here’s the synopsis:

Courtesy of the Batman team of writer Tom King and artist Jason Fabok, along with The Flashwriter Joshua Williamson and artist Howard Porter, the two greatest detectives in the DC Universe unite to unravel the mystery behind a certain blood stained smiley face button stuck in the Batcave wall. However, what begins as a simple investigation soon turns deadly when the secrets of the button prove irresistible to an unwelcome third party – and it’s not who anyone suspects! This is a mystery woven throughout time, and the countdown starts here!

Gotta tell you, I can’t wait. I’m a DC fan to begin with, but the Rebirth initiative has been a revelation. With all the major characters getting back to basics, and plenty of cool new ideas present (like the original DCU Superman and Lois), it’s been a real treat after years of trying to shake things up. Sometimes, things that aren’t broke really don’t need fixing.

All four issues that the event will play out in will feature lenticular covers, like the ones that you see here (click them to see the effect). All will be done by Jason Fabok too, so you know they’re gonna be pretty great. If the next two look anything like the first two, this is going to be quite the set.

The lenticular editions will cost a bit more than usual though, and clock in at $3.99 USD. Don’t worry though, if you’re not into ’em, the standards will be out there too at the usual $2.99 cover price.

Check ’em out when the first issues of the four part “The Button” crossover land on the stands and arrive via digital download on April 19th.

‘Watch’ for this one up for sale at Comic Con…

IDW is really making a habit of producing massive collector’s tomes for some of the biggest stories to hit the printed page, well, ever. Dave Gibbons Watchmen: Artifact Edition is no different from what’s come before in the series since it’s pretty freaking amazing and looks to be as much of a ‘must have’ for fans as any Watchmen book has ever been.

Weighing in at 152 pages and measuring 12 x 17 inches, the Dave Gibbons Watchmen: Artifact Edition features 100 story-page scans (all shot from the original art) and many extras: covers, portfolio plates, color guides, roughs, early design images and more.

Can you say ‘definitive’? Aside from the book, IDW will also be hosting a special evening with the author in San Diego. Dave Gibbons himself will be in the house for a “fine meal”…”in a private dining room in downtown San Diego” with the 25 fans who attend. Gibbons will sign copies of a special edition of the book (only 25 will be made) and actually pencil a unique head sketch for each one, right there and on the spot. If you’re one of those fans who’ll be attending, you’ll even have your moment with Gibbons recorded as photogs will be on hand.

“I’m thrilled and flattered that IDW have produced this book of my Watchmen art” said Gibbons, “and I’m greatly looking forward to being on hand to launch it at San Diego.”

Tickets to the launch ‘party’ can be purchased here, and the book will be on sale at the Con for the first time. And if you can’t makes the party, you’ll still be able to get your copy signed as the artist will be stationed intermittently at the IDW booth (#2643) starting on Preview Night (July 23rd) and lasting through the entirety of the show (all five days).

Checklist time guys and gals, IDW has officially announced their selection of Con exclusive comics.

Needless to say, there’ll be plenty to buy at this year’s SDCC, as there always is. IDW just added a good deal to that stack of purchase options with their listing of comics for the biggest pop culture and comic book convention in the US. Chief on that list are the new Artist’s Edition books.

If you’re not familiar with the line, Artist’s Edition books are some of the coolest books that IDW publishes are like celebrations of individual artist’s and their most famous books. You won’t find just IDW imprinted pencilers here either, as the Artist’s Editions run the publishing gamut from Dark Horse, to Marvel, to DC and everything in between. They’re a bit on the pricy side, but if you’re a devotee, they’re well worth it.

Also up in 2014 are a bunch of SDCC-exclusive variant comics that you won’t find anywhere else and books of every other flavor with selections from the company’s TMNT and My Little Pony lines. Have a look below for the full scoop, make your picks, and then get there early on the show days as these won’t last. But you know the drill by now.
