Why is being “perfect” not all it’s cracked up to be? And what principles can we use to guide us toward concentrating on what really matters? On this episode with The Lazy Genius, herself, Kendra Adachi, we flip the script on perfectionism.  Don’t be scared, y’all.  We can do hard things!  And it might actually be kind of fun.

Flipping the Script on Perfectionism

So, I’m not going to lie.  I was nervous as all get out to interview Kendra.  Why, you ask?  Well, because I wanted everything to be…you guessed it…PERFECT!  Well, it certainly wasn’t that.  Not by a long shot!  But do you know what it was?  It was an absolute blast and she’s just as amazing in person as you think she’d be from reading her NYT best-selling book or listening to her podcast.

Here are the topics covered in this episode:

  • How perfectionism effected Kendra’s life
  • Why so many of us tend toward perfectionism in different areas
  • Being a Lazy Genius is the antithesis of perfectionism
  • Kendra gives us a “starter pack” of 3 Lazy Genius principles to help us overcome our perfectionism

Who is Kendra Adachi?

Kendra Adachi is the New York Times Bestselling author of The Lazy Genius Way and creator of The Lazy Genius Podcast. As a systems expert and professional permission giver, Kendra helps others stop doing it all for the sake of doing what matters. She lives in North Carolina with her husband and three kids.

If you thought that fashion, faith, style, and worthiness were not all interconnected in our female brains, think again!  This conversation today with author, makeup artist, and fashion expert Nicole M. Caruso broadened my perspectives on all of those topics in the very best way again and again.  Prepare to have yours broadened, too!

Flipping the Script on Fashion & Worthiness

Here’s a couple questions for you to get your fashion juices flowing.  How long did it take you to get dressed this morning?  Do you like what you’re wearing?  What about your hair?  Did you enjoy doing it today or is it another day for a top knot?  And let’s talk makeup.  Are you wearing any?  Do you ever?  Does any of this even matter?  What does it mean to be “worthy of wearing?”  Well, to get the lowdown on why I’m asking, you’re going to have to give today’s episode a listen.

Y’all, what a treat.  Nicole is just as lovely as she could be and her baby boy even contributed to the conversation!  It was so sweet.  When we started talking, he was asleep on her lap, but towards the end, you’ll get to hear how he feels about fashion and style and being Worthy of Wearing, too.

Topics Covered Today Include:

  • Nicole’s background in the fashion and beauty industries
  • The #worthyofwearing movement — what it is and why it matters
  • How that movement/mindset can help us flip the script on more than just our clothes, but our self-esteem and self-worth, too
  • Small steps we can take to make those changes in our own lives
  • How to encourage our daughters to see their own worthiness and express their own unique styles
  • Nicole’s new book launching at the end of May 2021

Who is Nicole M. Caruso?

Nicole is the author of forthcoming book with Sophia Institute Press called Worthy of Wearing: How Personal Style Expresses Our Feminine Genius. She is also a professional makeup artist and beauty consultant, former Beauty Editor of Verily Magazine, and homeschooling mother of 3. Nicole’s mission is to inspire women to invest in their self-worth with her movement #worthyofwearing. She wants women to live an integrated life where faith and style meet. On her website nicolemcaruso.com, she shares expert style and beauty advice, tips on healthy living, and reflections on marriage and motherhood. It’s almost certain that there isn’t a woman out there who doesn’t have some issue with her body.  Whether she’s tall or short, plus size or petite, “healthy or unhealthy”.  No matter how much or little she exercises or what or how much she eats.  We all want to be better, do better, feel better, look better.  And throw aging and the crazy hormones of pregnancy or menopause in there and, well, it all just feels like a whole lot.  So today, I sit down with Angela Brown to discuss flipping the script on women’s health and wellness.

Flipping the Script on Women’s Health & Wellness

I remember the moment when I realized I needed to change how I thought about exercise.  My back had gone out again (thanks, scoliosis) and a kind and insightful physical therapist had a “come to Jesus” with me about it.  He told me that, in order to prevent this from happening again and again, I needed to make movement a part of my life.  He took into consideration my scoliosis and subsequent arthritis in my left knee and foot and suggested regular yoga and walking.  After months of taking him at his word, I was floored!  Not only was my back doing better, but so was my mental health!

Seriously, you could’ve knocked me over with a feather.  Exercise became something that I looked forward to doing as opposed to something I did to punish myself.  Consider that script flipped, my friends!

Topics covered today include:

  • The moments Beth & Angela both realized their health scripts needed flipping
  • Angela’s thyroid health journey from stressed out college student and former athlete to thriving health and fitness professional
  • Angela’s top three health and wellness factors for women to consider at any age, but especially as we age

Who is Angela Brown?

Angela Brown is a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition and Healthcare Practitioner and a licensed Physical Therapist in Missouri.  She started practicing physical therapy over 22 years ago and then added in functional medicine almost 7 years ago. She and her husband Matt own a gym where she practices both physical therapy and personal training. And she has also become a thyroid health coach, helping with women with hypothyroidism regain their energy and balance their hormones utilizing lab testing and nutrition.

Friends, I am not going to lie.  This conversation 100% left me wondering, “Where was this episode when I was a younger woman and had no clue about money?!”  It is just chock full of lightbulb moment after lightbulb moment.  So, whether you consider yourself to be savvy with personal finance or not, this is an episode you won’t want to miss.

Flipping the Script on Personal Finance

As someone who has, for most of her life, had a tenuous relationship with money, I needed this episode more than I can say.  It has taken lots of mess-ups, lots of near misses, and a lot of grace for Greg and me to get to where we are today.  So, I kind of what to shout from the rooftops that ALL young women should listen to this!  All people who feel they aren’t capable of budget, listen up!

Amanda was so kind and encouraging.  One of the main things I took away from our conversation is that “problems” with money are more than normal.  Whether your problems stem from your family history, your bank account, or live solely in your head…it’s normal.  And they can be overcome.

Here’s the kicker, though.  What took Greg and me almost 15 years to figure out, it took Amanda and her husband mere months.  And she wants to help others, too!  So I really hope y’all will listen in and look her up if what she says sounds like it may benefit you.

Topics Covered in the Episode:

  • The intersection of faith and finance
  • Beth & Amanda share the events that made them flip the script on how they interacted with money
  • The three biggest issues Amanda sees women in particular having with personal finance
  • How and when we should start teaching our kids about money
  • Why learning about finances and being confident in them actually matters
  • What is Wallet Win and how the system is helpful

Who is Amanda Teixeira?

Amanda hails from Omaha, Nebraska. She is a wife, mother, and co-founder of WalletWin, a personal finance education company. Amanda is a nationally sought-after speaker and writer on the topics of finances, leadership, and femininity. Before launching WalletWin, she served nine years as a staff member with FOCUS, a Catholic campus ministry organization. When she isn’t running her business, Amanda can be found having spontaneous dance parties or exploring the outdoors with her husband Jonathan, daughters Josephine, Charlotte, and Eleanor and their beloved Labrador Retriever, Wrigley.  One of Amanda’s goals is to help us understand that money doesn’t have to be scary, boring, or something for someone else to handle – YOU can (and must) handle it well for God’s glory.

In today’s episode, I sit down with real-life friend and all-around great gal, Patty Breen, to discuss something I basically know nothing about but Patty certainly does. Namely, what is it like to live the single life in your 30s in the 21st century?  Lucky for us, Ms. Patty is as open and funny and lovely as she could be and she shares her story with us.

Flipping the Script on the Single Life

But why? you might be asking yourself.  Why do we “smug marrieds” as Bridget Jones would call us in her diary — and let’s be honest, married people are pretty much my listener demographic, but if you are one of the single listeners, you’ll get some serious value from this conversation, too — Anyway, why is it that the collective “WE” need to have the script flipped on singlehood? Well, it’s for the sake of compassion…empathy…and taking a look at a situation outside of our own sphere and understanding it better.  And, at the same time, sometimes it’s really helpful to hear someone else’s perspective on a situation we know all too intimately.

Topics covered today include:

  • What do single people feel married people need to see differently?
  • Patty’s experience with marriage, divorce, annulment, and starting to date again in her 30s
  • What “healthy dating” looks like
  • What is an annulment and what isn’t it?
  • Online dating in the 21st century
  • God’s ability to take our plans and disappointments and turn them into something beautiful

Who is Patty?

Patty Breen is a Pastoral Associate at her local parish in Michigan, a position she describes as being the Robin to the priest’s Batman. She has been working in lay ministry for over twelve years and writes at various places online. A true Midwestern girl, Patty finds joy in running, strong cups of coffee, Ignatian spirituality, writing, and a good old-fashioned Hollywood musical. She is passionate about messy conversations at the intersection of faith, culture, and ministry.

I’ve had a lot of good conversations in my life.  And this conversation with Leticia O. Adams?  It ranks right up there at the top.  In today’s episode, Leticia and I sit down together and discuss such timely (yet seemingly eternal) topics as povertyprivilege, and racism.

Flipping the Script on Poverty and Privilege

I think we can all agree that there are conversations that we have in our lives that affect us deeply.  They rock our world just enough to leave us thinking and processing long after the talking has stopped.  This was one of those for me and I hope it will be for you, too.

There’s no way around it, this is a challenging episode.   It’s one that will ask you to reconsider certain prejudices, hear another woman’s story with an open heart, and will prompt you to learn and grow.  At the same time, though, it’ll make you laugh and provide some concrete steps for moving forward into a new frame of mind.

Content warning: We discuss the death by suicide of Leticia’s oldest son.  If that is not a topic that is good for your heart right now, I understand.  I love you.  And I might suggest that you return to the episode at another time.

Who is Leticia O. Adams?

Leticia is a wife, mother and grandmother who lives in Texas. As a freelance writer, she has contributed to The Catholic Hipster Handbook from Ave Maria Press and Patrick Madrid’s Surprised by Truth from Sophia Press. In this episode of the A Welcome Grace Podcast, we are flipping the script on being part of the Sandwich Generation and no, I’m not talking peanut butter and jelly.  Do you have children under the age of 18 in your home?  Do you also have parents over the age of 65?  If you answered yes to both questions, then you are part of the ever-growing Sandwich Generation.  Welcome to the club.

Flipping the Script on the Sandwich Generation

The Sandwich Generation is made up of those people between the ages of approximately 40 and 59 who have living parents over the age of 65 and dependent children under the age of 18.  So, in essence, the sandwich generation is not a chronological one (like Baby Boomers, Millennials, and GenXers) but more of an experiential one.

Also, this whole topic makes me feel really old.  But I guess that’s neither here nor there in the long run.

In this episode of the podcast, my guest Dr. MaryRuth Hackett and I break down the whole concept of the Sandwich Generation and flip the script on what it can and does mean in our lives.  Dr. Hackett also leaves us with some encouragment and super practical tips on how to thrive in this often stressful season of life.

Topics covered in today’s episode include:

  • the difference between our chronological generation and our experiential generation (GenX versus Sandwich Generation)
  • how our relationships with our children can relate to those with our parents, but also how different they are by necessity
  • steps we can take to diffuse the stressful conversations we have with our aging parents

Who is Dr. MaryRuth Hackett?

Dr. Hackett is a podcaster, blogger, aspiring writer, wife, and mother of four kids ages 9-17 living in Arizona.  She holds a PhD in Educational Psychology and has a passion for helping others understand human development.  Her podcast, Parenting Smarts, is a production of the Diocese of Phoenix.  Both her podcast and her writings weave together practical family life, research on child development, and Catholic teaching with the goal of helping moms and dads embrace their vocations at home and excel at parenting.

Are you asking yourself, “What in the world is the feminine genius, anyway?”  Then, to paraphrase today’s guest, “Sister, this episode is for you!”  No, for real.  You may think today’s episode is going to go way into Catholic woo-woo territory and, well, you’d be kind of right.  But I promise you’ll be glad you listened!

Flipping the Script on the Feminine Genius

Like I said, in this week’s episode, we go full-on Catholic and really deep dive a topic I didn’t even know existed until about 10 years ago.  Honestly, maybe it was even more recent than that and yes, I am a cradle Catholic!  In Episode 13, Chloe Langr and I venture into Pope St.  John Paul II’s teaching on the feminine genius.  For those of you who know what that is, wonderful!  Welcome to the conversation.  For those of you who are scratching your heads or maybe have heard this phrase but don’t quite know what it means?  Wonderful and welcome to you, too.

Topics in today’s discussion include:

  • What is the feminine genius, anyway?
  • How does it impact our lives?
  • Is this just a Catholic thing or does it apply to non-Catholic women, too? (Spoiler alert: it does.)
  • How does the feminine genius support our individuality and that there’s not just one way to be a Catholic woman?
  • Can dialing in on the feminine genius help us cope when God flips the script on what we think life should be?

Who is Chloe Langr?

Ok, isn’t she just the cutest?  Seriously, for someone so young and adorable, I am constantly impressed by Chloe’s knowledge of and love for her Catholic faith and literally every woman she talks to.  Such an inspirational young woman!  (And yes, I am totally aging myself because girlfriend is just about to have her second baby and is quite accomplished.  But I’m like 18 years older than she is which means I could be her mom, so there’s that.)

Anywho…

Chloe Langr is a Catholic wife, mom, and author living in the heart of the Midwest. She hosts “Letters to Women,” a podcast that explores what it means to live out the feminine genius in the everyday. A Catholic Book Award winner, Chloe is the author of several books, including Created for Love: Reflections for the Catholic Bride-to-Be and the brand-new Letters to Women: Embracing the Feminine Genius in Everyday Life. When she isn’t behind the podcast microphone, you can find her drinking espresso with her husband, Joseph, and reading board books with her two young daughters.

I have a very hard time with the fact that my oldest child is 19.  In fact, I’m having such a hard time with it that I originally typed that he was 18.  It seems that my brain cannot comprehend that in a matter of months, my baby will be 20.  (Cue the “Nope, don’t like that” meme from The Office.)  So, it turns out that it is a very good thing indeed that this week’s episode is all about flipping the script on parenting adults.

Flipping the Script on Parenting Adults

If you are in the same season of motherhood I am (or even getting close to it), you too think it’s really hard to grasp that sooner rather than later, your own kids are going to start graduating, finding jobs, getting married, and even becoming parents themselves!  And, like me, it is a season of parenting that you’re both really beginning to look forward to while simultaneously being completely scared to death of.  Then again, that’s probably how we all feel about every new phase of motherhood, isn’t it?

Topics covered include:

  • college
  • job searches
  • fostering our kids’ vocations (both to marriage and the religious life)
  • being a mother-in-law
  • parenting without fear
  • and more!

Now, maybe this episode should’ve been called “Flipping the Script on Parenting Young Adults”, but what’s done is done.  I know there’s a whole episode that could be done about how parenting really never stops.  I’m sure that any mother of a mid-lifer would agree to that.  But that’s another episode for another time.  Today, we talk young adults.  Because frankly, that’s scary enough.

Who is Kathryn?

Kathryn Scheibmeir is a Victim Services Coordinator with her local District Attorney’s Office in Texas.  Prior to doing this work, though, she was a stay-at-home mom for over 20 years.  She and her husband Peter have 9 children, 8 boys and 1 girl, six of whom are in their 20s.  She says that she started her parenting journey looking forward to the perfect Norman Rockwell moments life could bring, but has found the bawdiness and messiness of reality to be much, much better.  Kathryn truly is wise and funny and I felt so lucky to be able to chat with her about this next phase of parenting.
