Description: Beginning with an examination of the resounding failure of the PROMESA Act, which is characterized by the intensification of the displacement and expulsion of Puerto Ricans, as well as by the escalation of economic and political violence, Dr. Pérez-Lizasuain proposes reversing the prevailing analytical framework by shifting the focus from the colonial periphery to the imperial core. He argues that Puerto Rico’s prolonged metacrisis has become a contemporary process of primitive accumulation that mirrors the contradictions increasingly visible within the United States itself. The Puerto Rican experience is not merely a postcard from the past and a photograph to be studied in the present; it is a living X-ray that enables critical analysis of the political, economic, cultural, and geopolitical crises that are redefining U.S. hegemony and the contemporary imperial order.

Bio: César J. Pérez-Lizasuain is an Assistant Professor of Sociology and Criminal Justice at the University of Puerto Rico at Carolina and a sociologist of law. His research and teaching interests include political theory, sociology of law, colonialism, political economy, human rights, and the relationship between law, state power, and social transformation, with particular attention to Puerto Rico and the broader Latin American context. His most recent book, El malestar en la colonia, examines Puerto Rico’s contemporary crisis from a critical perspective.

Desciption: In this talk, History PhD candidate, former Lemann Center for Brazilian Studies Fellow, and HRI graduate fellow Owen MacDonald explains his dissertation project, “Caribbean Amazônia: Labor on the Madeira-Mamoré Railway and the Making of Race, Gender, and Empire in Northwestern Brazil, 1870-1943,” within the context of African Diaspora and Afro-Latin American Studies. Connecting Indigenous and African-descendant history through Lélia Gonzalez’s theory of Amefricanidade and expanding on Abdias do Nascimento’s theory of Quilombismo, MacDonald investigates the contested formation of racial hierarchy, gender norms, Brazilian state-making, and United Statesian empire building in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. Grounded in the Black Radical Tradition of Gonzalez, Nascimento, W.E.B. Du Bois, Kwame Nkrumah, Walter Rodney, Sylvia Wynter, Saidiya Hartman, and Cledenice Blackman, MacDonald invites invested scholars and communities to think together through the US-funded railroad project on Indigenous Amazonian land built by racialized workers from Brazil and the Caribbean.

Bio: Owen MacDonald is a PhD candidate in the department of history at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign where he is finishing his dissertation "Caribbean Amazônia: The Madeira-Mamoré Railroad, Labor, and the Making of Race, Gender, and Empire in Northwestern Brazil, 1870-1942." He holds a master's degree in African and African American Studies from the University of Kansas. He is a current graduate fellow at the Humanities Research Institute and has been a Lemann Center Graduate Fellow, Illinois Distinguished Fellow, and Fulbright Hays Fellow.

Description: What happens when an American diplomat arrives in Korea expecting the "Orient" — and doesn't find it? Charles Chaillé-Long, a veteran of the American Civil War, the Egyptian Army and explorer of the Nile, came to Seoul in the late nineteenth century with a mental map of the "Oriental" shaped by his experience in Egypt. Korea didn't fit. This talk traces how Chaillé-Long's comparisons between Egypt and Korea expose the limits of Orientalism as a framework for understanding East Asia, and what those limits mean for how we think about early Korean-American diplomatic engagements.

Bio: Hyungji Park is Professor of English Literature at Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea. Her research focuses on Victorian literature, postcolonial studies, and nineteenth-century contact between Britain and Korea. She is currently a visiting scholar at the Center for Global Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she is developing a project on visual culture in nineteenth-century British-Korean relations.

Dr. Sofía Zaragocin (Geography & GIS, UIUC) is a widely recognized scholar in geography, known for her innovative contributions to feminist and decolonial frameworks in Latin America. Her recent work centers on the Galápagos Islands, where she develops the concept of “island feminisms” through feminist political ecology and Latin American Pacific decolonial feminist perspectives.

Her research builds on longstanding collaborative work with feminist organizations in the Galápagos, engaging feminist geography to address gender-based violence and advance critical climate justice within conservation contexts. In this talk, Dr. Zaragocín reflects on “doing research otherwise,” highlighting non-extractive, decolonial approaches grounded in island feminist perspectives.

Description: If selling predictions and modifications of our consumer behavior is the burgeoning future of capitalism, who’s buying? In this talk, Adrian Wong examines Chile’s implementation of a digital development policy for Small and Medium Sized Enterprises, a crucial yet under-analyzed stratum of global political economy. Presenting research findings from two-years of ethnographic and multimethod research, he will discuss the tensions, alliances, and maneuvers that shape this policy implementation, and the labor involved in making so-called inevitable digital futures a lived reality.

Bio: Adrian Wong is a PhD candidate in the Institute of Communications Research in the College of Media at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign. His work focuses on policy implementation and processes of digital transformation in the Global South, especially Chile. He has been the recipient of the Tinker Field Research Grant (summer of 2022), Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad fellowship for field research in Chile (2023-2024), and FLAS Fellowships for the study of Chinese-Mandarin. He most frequently works with and is intellectually indebted to (in no set order) Cameron McCarthy, Krystal Smalls, Jacob Bowers, Anita Say Chan and the Community Data Clinic, Nikki Usher and the Platforms, Politics, and Local News in Illinois research team, and the Center for Information, Technology, & Public Life. Prior to UIUC, in Los Angeles he performed quartets with Midori Goto as a Presidential Scholar at the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music and recorded three albums with his brother, Julian Wong, as part of the music project empty cloud.

By analyzing the costs and benefits for authors, publishers, and libraries, one can consider whether open access offers a more viable path forward for scholarly communication or if closed access remains essential for financial stability.

Bio: Lisa Janicke Hinchliffe is Professor/Coordinator for Research Professional Development in the University Library at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign. She is also an affiliate faculty member in the University’s School of Information Sciences, Center for Social and Behavioral Science, European Union Center, and Center for Global Studies. Lisa has presented and published widely on information literacy, teaching and learning, the value of libraries, library assessment, program evaluation, and organizational innovation.
