If that’s a yes and a yes, keep reading…  I’m going to give you free ideas, cost effective strategies, as well as the perfect plan.  So you can toss that giant play yard, break down that makeshift fort, and let the toddlers toddle, because it’s their house too!!

First the free stuff!  Get down and pick up.  You’re looking for loose change, paper clips, old food, dust bunnies, marbles, rocks, and any other unidentifiable nasty’s.  You’re in their office now!  Next, crawl over to the floor vents.  Can you lift them up?  If yes, secure with double stick tape – Velcro – or put the leg of a piece of furniture on it.  Unfortunately, their office also comes with unlimited voltage, at eye level.  Isn’t that lovely?  First choice, block it with furniture, or a giant throw pillow.  DO NOT PLUG IN PLASTIC OUTLET CAPS!!  I will explain in the cost effective strategy section.  Oh, and while you’re down there, look for floor outlets.  We don’t want anyone to drool into them.  They come with screw on covers, or just move the area rug over them.

You can get up now.  Go to the linen closet and get some cushy quilts.  We are going to remove any furniture with sharp corners on it, to the basement, attic, or another room.  If you wish, sometimes you can make them a side table.  Glass tables must go!  If it’s sharp and needs to stay, throw a quilt over it.  You just created a padded ottoman.  Get a tray table if you need to balance your Merlot and a remote after they’re all tucked in.  Quilts go around fireplaces too.  Just think of it as a picnic.  You can now get the fruit and cheese.

More free tips in no particular order.  Run lamp cords down the back of tables so that wires to pull on are out of reach.  Look for dangling cords from window treatments and tie them up.  If your containment plan is family room / kitchen, and your microwave looks like it was put there for them, press the control lock button.  Speaking of the kitchen, close the dishwasher until it clicks, cook on the back burners, pull the stove knobs off unless you’re cooking, and move chemicals, blades, corncob holders and skewers up, up , and away.

Looks like we’ve run out of time in this edition for Cost Effective Products and The Perfect Plan.  Stay tuned for more, or seek us out with specific questions that pertain to your house.  OMG, the guests are here for your impromptu cocktail party.  Just pull the quilts.  You’ve got your house back.  Enjoy!!

🙂 Jay

Looking back on it, the insight gained as to what my daughter would do, came true in the next few months.  Along with the detailed observations during our home safety survey / evaluation, we decided to have some items professionally installed that same day.

We could not believe the results.  Not only did we have two sturdy cabinet latches installed under our kitchen sink, but he adjusted the cabinet doors in the process.  Now the cabinet doors line up straight and no longer scrap the bottom of the cabinet frame as they close.  Oh, Oh, Oh, and… when he adjusted the cabinet doors, he also tightened and straightened the cabinet handles that had been loose for years!

But guess what?  It got better!

Our child must be a water sign.  She is attracted to anything she can splash in.  When our Child Proofer installed the potty lid lock, he tightened the toilet seat itself.  Now, when I sit to squat, I no longer feel like I am sliding off into the shower.  What a difference a day makes.  What a difference a Child Proofer makes.

Now this one really blew me away.  The Child Proofer recommended sliding electrical safety plates, because the plastic caps that we had were lying all over the house, and never seemed to be replaced after someone used the outlet.  We were told that the caps were actually a choking hazard for babies and read the reviews that backed up the claim.  Now, when a child unplugs a device from an outlet, the sliding cover shuts closed, and the baby can’t attempt to plug it back in. Very cool, but this is not what blew us away.  The Child Proofer asked me to put my hand over the original outlet cover.  I felt a huge draft of cold air.  After he replaced it, I felt no draft at all.  Wow.. not only is this product safer for the baby, but it is truly a “green” product.  I will even save $$$$ on heating and air conditioning bills.

I thought to myself, “Nah, this can’t get any better.”  But sure enough it did.  He said, “lets not try to child proof the entire house, let’s just close some doors and keep the baby in the safest part of the house, where we can see him.”  I agreed.  We went to close a door that would keep the baby away from the mud room / garage.  We closed it, but it pushed right open.  The door was not clicking closed properly.  Hmm..  Neither did the door to the basement.  Now what?  He looked at me with a reassuring smile and said, “Give me 15 minutes.”

15 minutes later both doors had new life and were clicking closed once again.  Since the basement door had stairs leading down, he recommended t putting a hardware latch up high and out of reach.  We did so.  Great idea, and next to nothing to purchase.  Incredible peace of mind.

Our Child Proofing evaluation and installation was truly an incredible experience.  This part of the parenting journey is not at all about spending money on gadgets and gizmos.  It’s about an eye for anticipating and addressing the potential child safety issues in your specific home.  Child Proofers flat out have an eye for things you see everyday but don’t notice.  Child Proofing should not be an “after the fact” hustle to get up to speed.  Make it an in home playdate with a Child Proofer in your area.

These guys and gals are good!  Check them out.  We found ours at ChildProofingExperts.com.

What You Need.

  • An electric drill and electric screwdriver.
  • Screws (generally #6 or #8
    from 1 ¼” up to 3″.)
  • Drill bits and asst.
  • Level

Always

  • WEAR EYE PROTECTION!
  • Follow The Insructions
  • Read the manufacturers instructions thoroughly, then ask the coach when you have no idea what they mean
  • Pre-drill a hole slightly smaller than the screw you are about to use. This will keep wood from cracking and long screws from breaking when entering hard wood
  • Use a level on your gates hinge side or level the wood mount for the gates hinge side. This will keep the gate steady, not flying open or closed when in use.
  • With your level, make sure that the wood mount is not only straight up and down but also level with the wall. This may take a small wood block at the top of the mount to make up for the space created by the molding on the bottom.
  • And of course if you have a unique situation, you can always ASK THE COACH!

FINGER PINCHING IN DOORS: Ouch! Take a bath towel, throw it over the top of the door so the door doesn’t close fully and pinch their fingers. Jam it in the hinge to restrict the door even more.

2. REFRIGERATOR MAGNETS: They hit the floor when people brush past them and become instant choking hazards. Often there is a little round magnet glued to something larger. When they hit the floor the magnet detaches. The plastic letters that stick to the fridge are for ages 3 and up. They hit the floor and a small rectangular magnet dislodges. Watch out.

3. NICK NACKS: Like small ceramic and glass figurines, ashtrays, crystal, candy dishes, potpourri, glass frames, coins, purses, etc. must be taken off low shelves and tables. Move ’em up or get ’em out.

4. PLANTS: Forget whether they’re poisonous or not. Toddlers pull off the leaves and choke on them. They’ll play in the dirt. The ceramic pot will fall over and break. The plants on tables with wandering vines will also be pulled off and hopefully not land on anyone. Find a sunny new out of the way spot for them.

5. HOT BEVERAGES: Never drink a hot beverage (coffee) while you are holding or near a child. How many times a day do you JUMP for your child? It seems that jumping or quick movements tend to make liquids fly out of mugs in a hurry. A child’s skin is 10 times more sensitive to everything. So sip away. Way away!

6. MAKE SURE YOUR DOORS CLICK CLOSED: Sometimes when checking a house, I find that some of the doors don’t close all the way. Some frames are too tight for the door to close. Some have sagged and the latch mechanism doesn’t articulate properly. Some people count on that little ball on the top of the door to sit securely in its little housing. If you are going to count on a closed door, please make sure they close.

7. GFI OUTLETS: You know the ones on kitchen islands or in bathrooms? They have the two tiny buttons on them so that the circuit will trip if it senses a short. You can shut the power to these outlets just by pressing the button to deactivate it. We can not change this plate with a babyproofing one because those buttons need to be exposed. Downside, you’ve just shut the juice to an outlet you may want to use.

AUDIO and/or VIDEO MONITOR CORDS: If you have any stereo, entertainment, or computer systems in your home, their cords can run down the side of furniture or along the floor where your child can grab them and get tangled or strangled while you’re not even in the room. Don’t leave these cords exposed and within reach while you are pre-occupied preparing dinner or answering e-mails.

2. SHOEBOXES: Chances are your shoeboxes contain those small white Silica gel packetsthat most shoe manufacturers use to preserve shoes after they leave the factory. To a child these look like a nice candy treat. The gel balls in the packet are not necessarily deadly but can be a dangerous for a child and are easily accessible. Spare yourself the 911 call, Get rid of them!

3. DISHWASHER: Forget locking. I find that in most cases they are not even clicked closed. Children love to help. We don’t need any help putting away the steak knives, do we? Even more importantly, remnants of Cascade — which also looks like candy to a child — are often times found in the now open dispenser. One finger dip in the mouth and it’s another 911 call you don’t need to make.

4. CLUTTER: Clutter can contain paper clips, loose change, bobby pins, etc. All of these things are choking hazards and other types of clutter can also be a serious tripping hazard as well. Carrying a child up near your head creates a blind spot and even a tiny pile of clutter becomes a serious hazard. What about clutter on the stairs? Most people have a little pile things they want to take upstairs on their next trip. Funny how it just kind of stays there.

5. STOVE FRONT BURNER: Cooking on your stoves front burner in a pot that your child was just playing with on the floor and thinks is theirs, is a receipe for disaster! Move your HOT cooking pots to the back burner of the stove and out of their reach!

What if you could get your “childproofing” done tastefully, with attention to detail?  What if you could match a baby gate to the trim of your home?  Wouldn’t you love it if any hole had to be made, it would be the size of a pinprick that anyone with a pinky’s worth of spackle could fix in a minute, leaving no trace that a properly mounted safety gate had ever graced that particular threshold?  Well, it can work that way.  You can have your edges cushioned, have your chemicals locked, keep your dressers from tipping and much more without risking any permanent damage to your home.  You can cure the fears of destruction while creating a womb of safety for your little one.

There is a select group of businesses that have been doing this for decades.  They call themselves “Child Proofers”.  Not handymen, not your builder, not a carpenter, but folks who have been working with “baby proofing” products for a very long time.  They know what works, they know what you need, they know where to find them, and they know how to get the most out of them.

The assumption that “if you buy it in a store, it will work” tends to be every parents’ downfall.  The question becomes, “Do you call for help in anticipation or do you call for rescue when the road gets rough?”

The ideal, is that you want it to be easy to get around your home, yet safe for your child.  You cannot afford to be struggling with inferior products for years.  You want there to be no trace that your home was “baby proofed” by the time your child enters first grade.

All the information you need is just a phone call or a website away.  If you are a seeker who wants to do things properly from the “get-go”, then get in touch with a child proofer who has a great reputation for quality and value.  Ask a friend whom they’ve used.  Every home and every parent’s threshold for safety are different.  Talk to a childproofer.  It’s not all about spending money.  It’s about common sense, being creative and getting a little help that can go a very long way!
