The new building was developed after the Minneapolis Avenues program outgrew the 100-year-old facility it had called home since 1997.

The new site includes 20 shelter and transitional housing beds, eight affordable apartments, and expanded space for youth-led programming, mental health counseling, and life-skills training. We expect the facility to increase the number of young people supported each year from around 350 to 500.

Together, we have navigated moments of uncertainty and challenge, celebrated milestones of growth and joy, and witnessed extraordinary progress toward our vision of a community where all youth flourish. Most notably, we celebrated the Grand Opening of Avenues’ new, trauma-informed, collaboratively designed shelter, additional emergency overnight beds, affordable apartments, and headquarters in North Minneapolis.

As we reflect on all we have accomplished so far this year, we also look ahead and prepare for another important transition. Executive Director Katherine Meerse has announced her plans to retire at the end of 2026.

“Katherine is an amazing leader in all respects,” says Avenues Board President Shawn Sorrell. “We are in an incredibly strong place programmatically and financially as we finish a $24 million campaign, guided by Katherine, that is allowing us to expand our services and support to meet the needs of our community. We are deeply grateful to her for her commitment, passion, and service. She deserves some rest, and we wish exactly that in retirement.”

Since coming to Avenues in 2017, Katherine has guided the organization through a pandemic, a remote work transition, a digital operations migration, multiple community uprisings, and a momentous period of organizational growth. Through each challenge and opportunity, she remained firmly grounded in Avenues’ mission and values. Her leadership has strengthened our programs, expanded our impact, and helped position Avenues for a promising next chapter.

A Statement from Katherine

“Avenues has been the highlight of my career. Our principles-based approach to supporting youth experiencing homelessness with trauma-informed, journey-oriented, and holistic services has aligned perfectly with my philosophy of youth work. I believe that young people know what they need and that adults’ job is to listen to them and provide support. That is what Avenues does.

Avenues’ social justice approach also drew me to the organization. We know we will not end youth homelessness until we address its root causes, including racism, transphobia, and homophobia. With almost 5,000 young people experiencing homelessness on their own every night in Minnesota, we have a long way to go to end youth homelessness. Until we do, Avenues will be here, and while I won’t be on staff, I will remain the organization’s biggest champion in that work.

I’ve been honored to work alongside an amazing staff and board. The staff and board at Avenues are the kindest, most caring, most passionate, and most committed people I know. They are also a whole lot of fun. It’s hard work, but we laugh a lot and find so much joy in the success of our resilient, determined young people.

I have loved every minute of my time at Avenues, and I’m also very much looking forward to retirement. My flower beds are always shaggy, there’s an ever-growing pile of books waiting to be read, 52 state parks still to be hiked (I’m trying to hike all 64), and so many places all over the world I want to see.”

What’s next for Avenues Leadership

As part of this planned transition, Avenues is hiring an Interim Executive Director to support the board in the search for the next permanent Executive Director. The Interim ED will ensure robust engagement with both staff and board to tap their knowledge of what our growing organization needs in its next leader. The application for the interim position will open September 1 and be posted at avenuesforyouth.org.

Here are just a few of the outcomes your giving helped create in 2025:

• 7 youth who had been living at Minneapolis Avenues moved into their own apartments.
• 4 youth who had been living at Brooklyn Avenues found housing, and 1 youth enlisted in the army.
• 100% of youth participating in the Young Families and ConneQT programs moved on to safe and stable housing.

396 youth ages 16-24 and 47 children were supported by an Avenues program in calendar year 2025.

All youth at Avenues receive one-on-one support from a Youth Advocate and Engagement Specialist who works with them to identify and achieve their goals in housing, relationships, education, and/or employment. Additional supports youth receive include: 

• Health and wellness care, including mental health therapy
• Career and education readiness
• Financial education
• Parenting classes (when releveant)

With these supports, young people achieve housing stability, improve their wellness, gain independent living skills, and work toward achieving dreams.

Even the boldest of hues chosen for Avenues’ building — Iron Ore, Carnelian, Cyprus, Fudge — feel natural rather than harsh. They’re the colors of bark, stone, and night sky. None of them shout. All of them hold. 

And on the 2^nd floor along the corridor to the youth bedrooms, the deeper tones do important work beyond aesthetics. The colors function as wayfinding. Each entryway carries its own distinct hue, so a young resident can orient themselves at a glance. Color becomes a landmark, a quiet signal that says: you know where you are. You belong here. 

Every paint sample reminded us that someone thought very carefully about what feeling a color should evoke before they named it. We’re doing the same thing, thinking carefully about what every element of this building should feel like for the young people who will call it home. 

Our new Minneapolis Avenues will bring a brand-new shelter and transitional housing residence to North Minneapolis that adds 20 single bedrooms, 2 emergency bedrooms, 8 affordable apartments, a modern industrial kitchen, comfortable living spaces, and an outdoor courtyard for youth and young families aged 18 – 24 experiencing homelessness. More than 3 decades ago, Avenues for Youth began with the simple conviction that young people experiencing homelessness in the Twin Cities deserved a real path forward. Fast forward 30 years, and today Avenues is expanding its operations by building a brand-new purpose-built shelter, transitional housing, affordable apartments and headquarters in North Minneapolis. With all this change underway, questions abound. 

We have heard there are rumors that our Brooklyn Park location is closing once the new building opens. Those rumors are false. Brooklyn Avenues will remain open and operating at full capacity as it has since it opened in 2014. When Brooklyn Avenues was conceived, it was built around a powerful idea: the right environment changes outcomes. With trauma-informed design, private spaces, and wraparound support services, the results spoke for themselves. Everything learned at Brooklyn Avenues over the past decade is now being poured into what comes next in our new building. We are grateful for the many partners and supporters who make our work at Brooklyn Avenues possible. We draw daily inspiration from the resilience, passion, growth, and successes of the youth who call Brooklyn Avenues home. We look forward to many more years at Brooklyn Avenues and in our new North Minneapolis home!

Bayou is a multidisciplinary artist whose work transforms spaces to connect people to themselves, each other, and nature. A member of the Creatives After Curfew Mural Collective and Studio Thalo, Bayou’s approach combines digital design, hands-on participation, and shared storytelling — with a deep commitment to passing skills and creative experiences on to the next generation. 

Jordan Hamilton – Multi-Disciplinary Artist & Teaching Artist 

Jordan’s work bridges spiritual aspiration and earthly expression through painting, murals, sculpture, and mixed media. A founding member of the Power of Vision Mural Project and Creatives After Curfew, Jordan brings years of community teaching artistry, and a vision rooted in cosmic and elemental energy. 

Maiya Lea Hartman – Figurative & Community Engagement Artist 

Maiya’s practice is rooted in Black and Queer identity, weaving ancestral wisdom, nostalgia, and collective history into their work using symbols that carry deeper truths across generations. Maiya’s vision for the interior mural centers on figures interacting with one another reflecting the work and dreams of Avenues’ youth. Set against Northside streets, landmarks, and scenes from the natural world that will include sky, foliage, and water, the work will serve as a grounding ode to what it is we call home. Their final image will be shaped by the young people themselves through a series of engagement sessions.

At Avenues, we’re excited about the sustainable features going into our new building. Instead of traditional systems, we’re tapping into the Earth’s natural temperature with geothermal wells, partnering with Darcy Solutions, a Minnesota company doing innovative work with geothermal groundwater technology. 

We’re also moving away from fossil fuels by limiting natural gas — or eliminating it entirely where we can — in favor of cleaner alternatives. Our rooftop will be covered in solar panels to generate clean energy. The combined savings from incorporating solar energy and geothermal heating in the new building will help Avenues significantly lower our energy costs. We’re choosing appliances and systems that meet or beat current efficiency standards, so we’re using less to do more. 

The bottom line? We’re not just building to code – Avenues is building better than code for a more durable, energy-efficient building that’ll sustain us and the environment for years to come.

Avenues for Youth is excited to invite artists and artist teams to apply for a paid public art opportunity as part of our new Minneapolis Avenues building, currently under construction in North Minneapolis. This new space will expand our capacity to serve youth ages 18–24+ who are experiencing homelessness, offering safe housing, wellness supports, and community-centered programming. Art is a critical part of making this building feel like home: welcoming, dignified, and rooted in the neighborhood it supports.

Avenues seeks to commission two artists or two artist teams for two distinct projects:

1. exterior murals over the building’s main entrances and
2. a large-scale interior artwork in the lobby.

The selected artists will play a meaningful role in shaping how youth, staff, and community members experience the space, from the moment they arrive at the door to their first steps inside. Artists are encouraged to bring forward concepts that reflect resilience, belonging, and Avenues’ deep commitment to North Minneapolis.

Avenues strongly encourages artists who reflect the identities of the youth we serve, particularly artists who are Black, Indigenous, People of Color, and/or LGBTQIA+, and those with ties to North Minneapolis to apply. Youth voice is central to this project: selected artists will engage current and former Avenues participants in the creative process.
