1.What is your relationship with Balans?
I meet Darko last summer over a coffee, and kind of hit it off straight away. We decided to do something together and everything just grew from that. We managed to meet for another coffee this summer, and I am looking forward to having yet another one with Darko in September.
2.What do you do to try and stay in balance? Any tips & secrets you would like to share with us night folks?
Tough question. Record shopping, fresh air, and never being afraid of a challenge would be a good start I think -never get too comfortable to try out new things.
3.About the podcast, can you tell us the story behind the mix?
This is a recording of a live-set I did a few weeks ago. The thought was to present a mix of current and future ideas, and to explore new ground for music even further out in the future.
4.What gear did you use to make the Balans podcast?
My usual live-setup; A Frost audio computer, two evolution-uc33, and a novation launchpad.
5.What do you have in store for us (gigs/releases) the coming months?
The fourth release on Searchlights Records was released not too long ago, as well as my first record on Balans. Right now we (me and my brother Mathias) are planning SIGHTS-005, I am working on another record for Balans, and a few other labels, as well as writing music with a good friend of mine for an exhibition of his. Basically, just spending a lot of time writing and recording music.

]]>Here's what he had to say to us:
1.What is your relationship with Balans?
I am honored to play an event for Balans on July 12th.
2.What do you do to try and stay in balance? Any tips & secrets you would like to share with us night folks?
I wish I had a universal answer, but for me there is the balance of creating music and making drawings. Sometimes they inform one another and sometimes they provide a release from each other. Also, I find that its good idea to avoid television.
3.About the podcast, can you tell us the story behind the mix?
The mix is the third chapter in a series of podcasts I have completed recently. The first for Smoke Machine Taipei, the second for EDLX, and now BALANS. Each mix emphasizes sound design and analogue sound creation. There is music from the past, representing my musical influences and music from today. There are some rhythmic tracks, but not neccessarily techno, rather "proto-techno".
4.What gear did you use to make the Balans podcast?
Two Technics turntables and one CD player.
5.What do you have in store for us (gigs/releases) the coming months?
Right now, there are some remixes coming from various labels and of course, my new Prologue album "Lustrations" is now available. Also, I invite people to check out a new label called Mariana Wax, which has just re-released an older track of mine called "Below Zero". This once rare tune has been re-mastered for vinyl and it sounded great when I played it on the Berghain system. More gigs in Europe and Japan are planned for this summer. When I return to the US in September, I will begin work on an EP for Semantica.

Well.. Lets just say I know the owner really well ;-)
2.What do you do to try and stay in balance? Any tips & secrets you

Music all day long!
3.About the podcast, can you tell us the story behind the mix?
It's a collection of a few of my favorite tracks at the moment. I've tried to show the some of the different faces and moods techno has to offer and it's a pretty hypnotic affair. There's a few BALANS exclusive previews in there from Staffan Linzatti, Cadans and Dars. How I got my hands on those? I'm connected ;-)
4.What gear did you use to make the Balans podcast?
I 'cheated' with Ableton this time.
5.What do you have in store for us (gigs/releases) the coming months?
I have a few liveshows coming up in Helsinki and Have A Nice Day festival and I am preparing the Fourth and Fifth Trip for the fall. September and november is what I'm aiming for. Plus I've signed my first original to another label: Theory Records from Ben Sims. Also made a remix for him that will come out before the summer + more remixes are forthcoming on Bastardo Electrico and ON Records.

1.What is your relationship with Balans?
I've known Darko for some years now and played many times at his parties. Relationship got on the next level with my 'Lost EP' on Balans. Currently looking for a flat near Nijmegen. :D
2.What do you do to try and stay in balance? Any tips & secrets you would like to share with us night folks?
I have found my balance and I do live quite normal family life with my wife and son. I have a regular job. Music is my getaway from daily life. Tips? Eat well, do your sports and focus on positive things.
3.About the podcast, can you tell us the story behind the mix?
It is a live pa, 100% improvisation. Decided the starting track and just started jamming. I wanted to explore my own sounds and make out something different. Some of you might have heard my live sets earlier. They are usually much more straight forward. Here's long transitions and slowly evolving things; no hurry. Both tracks from the 'Lost EP' are included, but as you can hear, quite different versions. I'd say there is tension in it. That's what I try to put in on tracks.
4.What gear did you use to make the Balans podcast?
Laptop running Ableton Live, Akai APC40, Evolution UC33, Korg Electribe ESX-1, TouchAble on iPad, small mixer to sum it up.
5.What do you have in store for us (gigs/releases) the coming months?
'Lost EP' on Balans is out now and also 'Voyager' on Chronicle. Next one is 'Parallax of one second EP' on M_REC Ltd. Lots of remixes coming out too, first one for Mattias Fridell on Gynoid Ltd. Also writing stuff for DSH003. On the gig front, Tresor next friday (12th April) and Freerotation festival in the summer. Quite a lot of things happening. Good stuff.

01.What is you relationship with Balans?
I consider Darko Esser a good friend, we've worked together in the past and we continue to support each other.
02.What do you do to try and stay in balance? Any tips & secrets you would like to share with us night folks?
I've found eating a vegan diet and running during the week helps balance the crazy weekends.
03.About the podcast, can you tell us the story behind the mix?
It's pretty much a full on dancefloor mix, recorded fresh after the weekend.
04.What gear did you use to make the Balans podcast?
Traktor, Macbook Pro, 2 x A&H 1D Controllers, 92 A&H Mixer, alcohol.
05.What do you have in store for us (gigs/releases) the coming months?
This weekend is all about Holland. Friday for the Balans party in Amsterdam with Shifted who is also my neighbour here in Berlin so it's always a laugh. Saturday I'll be with Sandwell District at 'Have A Nice Day Festival' and then of course the after party.
Release wise, my remix for Truss on Sigha's Our Circula Sound label is out now on wax and soon on digital. The remix features as the penultimate track on the mix.

]]>As always, we had our Q&A with the mystery man:
01.What is you relationship with Balans?
No relationship to mention really, i'm just a fan of both the label, which is putting out consistently great music and of Darko as a producer.
02.What do you do to try and stay in balance? Any tips & secrets you would like to share with us night folks?
Try to eat well, not drink to much and enjoy life. Stress is the cause of so much ill health, I think if you have a healthy mind then your body follows.
03.About the podcast, can you tell us the story behind the mix?
I just wanted to do something more aimed at the Dancefloor. the intro and the outro also have some processed field recordings that i added on top to make it a little more interesting.
04.What gear did you use to make the Balans podcast?
Usually i'm playing vinyl, but i just recently moved to Berlin and as a result have no Technics here at the moment. I put this together in Ableton Live.
05.What do you have in store for us (gigs/releases) the coming months?
I have a collaboration with Edit Select that just came out on Semantica, I'm also working on a full EP for them. Aside from that theres remixes for Mike Parker, DJ Skirt & Planetary Assault Systems coming soon. And i'm working on a new Pacific Blue 12" and something for Avian.. No doubt there will be another EP for Mote Evolver this year as well.

Aside from that theres remixes for Mike Parker, DJ Skirt & Planetary Assault Systems coming soon. And i'm working on a new Pacific Blue 12" and something for Avian.. No doubt there will be another EP for Mote Evolver this year as well.
]]>01.What is you relationship with Balans?
I know Darko from my agency We are E and also know him personally a bit. I think wolfskuil and balance are both cool labels so im very happy to have a release at wolfskuil
02.What do you do to try and stay in balance? Any tips & secrets you would like to share with us night folks?
I think it's very important to stay in balance. I always say you can do everything you want as long you have the right balance.. With music, food, sleep, basically everything.. I always try to make my sets balanced as well by starting with more deep sounds and build up to more energetic tracks.
Also it's good to sport sometimes and be outside in the nature to balance with the clubscene every weekend!
03.About the podcast, can you tell us the story behind the mix?
I wanted to make a mix that you can listen to at home and that ends with more danceable warm tracks. It starts more dark and deep and it end euphoric.. I also wanted to put many of my latest releases in it from Eevonext and WIR, and ofcourse some unreleased new tracks. Plus my upcoming release at wolfskuil.
04.What gear did you use to make the Balans podcast?
I produced all tracks with FL Studio.. For the mix I used Ableton live.
05.What do you have in store for us (gigs/releases) the coming months?
My first release coming up is Hua Hun at Wolfskuil. Also there is a great release coming at Treibstoff this year with a very cool remixer. And also im making a remix for Einmusik and i probably also have my own relase there later this year.
Some nice gigs for the summer are:
Loveland festival, Shoeless festival, A day at the park and Cocoon heroes on the docks..

I have been a fan of Darko's for years and he has been supporting my music since before I even had released anything. After I had released a few records I sent him a demo which I thought he would like and then released an EP on Wolfskuil in 2010. A while later, I had a sample of a new electro project on soundcould and Darko wanted to sign it straight away… and the result is the forthcoming Chromezone - Atlantis EP.
02.What do you do to try and stay in balance? Any tips & secrets you would like to share with us night folks?
I try to keep work balanced with pleasure. If I'm working hard and/or in the studio for a few days solid, I'll make sure to get out with friends or go away at the weekend if I'm not already playing somewhere. It's good to give your ears a break now and then.
03.About the podcast, can you tell us the story behind the mix?
It's a special electro mix to coincide with my upcoming Wolfskuil release. It includes the 2 original tracks from the new EP as well as new stuff from Onionboy, The Third Man, Versalife and loads more. I also included some old favorites in there too for good measure.
04.What gear did you use to make the Balans podcast?
Pioneer CDJ 1000s, Technics 2010s and an Allen & Heath Xone mixer.
05.What do you have in store for us (gigs/releases) the coming months?
Upcoming gigs in Ireland, London and more to follow.
Release wise, I have a lot of stuff coming out… releases for Wolfskuil, Inflyte, Virgin/EMI, Electronical Reeds, Eevonext and more.
Remixes coming on Rebirth, Manual, Connaisseur, System and more.

I had to play at the 15th anniversary of Awakenings and bought a found a lot of good new techno tracks. So I made a few preparation mixes to listen back so I would know the music by heart. This mix is a reflection of what I played at the party, but mixed at home so slightly different too.

01.What is you relationship with Balans?
I am the proud owner of Balans Records and I organise the Balans parties in coop with my management We Are E!
02.What do you do to try and stay in balance? Any tips & secrets you would like to share with us night folks?
Sports, healthy organic food and getting up at normal times during the week seem to work for me lately. And since my hobby is my job and thus hard to separate, I have build in at least 1 day every week, were I keep away from work/mails etc. It ain't easy though ;-)
03.About the podcast, can you tell us the story behind the mix?
The podcast reflects what I play out mostly nowadays. A lot of hypnotic, dark techno with a few twist and turns here and there plus an 'Onionboy' ending #forthosewhoknow.
04.What gear did you use to make the Balans podcast?
I made and recorded the mix in Ableton in my studio.
05.Were do you have in store for us (gigs/releases) the coming months?
February is all about BALANS: we have 3 cool events line up. First up is Perron, Rotterdam (with Sandwell District, Brent Roozendaal). Next week a weekender with my brother from another mother Benny Rodrigues in Studio 80 (Amsterdam) on friday and my second livingroom Doornroosje on saturday. Supported by Roger Gerressen, Bas Amro, D-Ribeiro, Jorge Spencer and Tenpa. Then a lot of nice shows in march, including a BALANS night in the famous Moog club in Barcelona!

02.What do you do to try and stay in balance? Any tips & secrets you would like to share with us night folks?
Eat well, exercise, sleep and only smoke good weed and stick with beer!
03.About the podcast, can you tell us the story behind the mix?
Once upon a Thursday afternoon, a middle-aged man decided to embark on a creative mission. That mission would be to lay down approximately 60 minutes of groovy psychedelic electronic music that would take the listeners on a journey that would enable them to transcend time and space.
04.What gear did you use to make the Balans podcast?
The mix is the first mix I completed incorporating a modified korg monotribe. It was done in my home studio using ableton and a UC-33e controller. Recorded in one take, no rehearsing.

I have an album dropping on EDLX in April and will be touring Europe all of April and May. The first single from the album features mixes by Tommy Four Seven and Jonas Kopp.

01.What is you relationship with Balans?
My relationship with Balans is that I played twice (dj) at a Balans event. I've released at Wolfskuil Records. And i really dig the Balans label, some really fine music is released so far!
02.What do you do to try and stay in balance? Any tips & secrets you would like to share with us night folks?
My trick is to keep busy with music, as long as I spend a lot of my time in my own music world, I'm in Balance! And another one is that I try to travel Asia every year. Whenever I'm in Asia, I'm in Balance.
03.About the podcast, can you tell us the story behind the mix?
I wanted to let people hear my more darker side. People know me from my more housey dj sets and I tried to put in some darker records that were in my bag the past year.
04.What gear did you use to make the Balans podcast?
Two SL1200, one CDJ-800 and a Xone22.
05. What do you have in store for us (gigs/releases) the coming months?
The big thing for me this year is that I start my own label, together with a good friend of mine Tim Woestenenk. So there will be a release from myself this year on my own label! Really looking forward to this and I enjoy it all ready. Some nice dj gigs coming up: 4 February at Have an Ice Day in Nijmegen. And 11 February Voltt at Paradiso Amsterdam.

We are the last people to tell others how to stay in balance :)

Not really a story to it, it was recorded during a late night session at home. We tried to mix up some recent tracks with timeless classics and are pretty satisfied with the results!
