Red Panda Loses Mind Over Pumpkin

I don’t have much to say about this video other than it’s making the rounds on the internet, it was shot at the Maruyama Zoo in Sapporo, Japan, and it’s incredibly cute.

OK, I do have one thing to say: Every red panda I’ve ever seen at the zoo has been either sleeping in a tree or moving around very slowly. Why haven’t I gotten to see this? Are the other red pandas lazy, or is this one energetic? Or do pumpkins have special power over red pandas that we need to more regularly incorporate at zoos?

Mid-Week Refresh: This Will Have You Running to the Zoo

When I was younger I loved going to the zoo. I would pretend that I had a close friendship with all of the animals; just like Mowgli and Baloo. Although the kids today are much more acquainted with Dora and Boots, kids of today (and yesterday) still imagine a world where people and animals can communicate with one another.

Here is a little boy at the San Diego Zoo who definitely found a way to communicate with a curious river otter.

Mid-Week Refresh: Meet the Cutest Sloth Orphans in the World

If your week feels like it’s dragging on, just think how exhausted these guys must be once Friday rolls around. Sure, eating carrots and cuddling each other in blanket-coats doesn’t look like hard work, but at the world’s only sloth orphanage in Costa Rica, these sloths are making leaps and bounds – in the field of cuteness.

Stuffed Animals Help Baby Beavers

Animal rescue always has the risk of wild animals becoming too dependent on humans. To save some baby beaver kits, PAWS Wildlife Center in Lynnwood, WA found that stuffed animals helped.

KOMO News.com reports:

“PAWS tries to minimize human interaction, but that’s tough when the kits need to learn everything, starting with how to eat. For the first two weeks, the staff at PAWS bottle fed the beavers by hand. But to cut back on that human interaction and to better mimic life in the wild, they brought in a surrogate – a stuffed animal beaver with bottles and a hot water bottle tucked inside. It worked.

The kits nursed that way for another couple months before making the transition to solid food. Another stuffed animal helped the beavers learn to swim and dive”. See full article.

What are Baby Raccoons Called…Besides Cute?

Last week, work stopped for a good half hour at the National Wildlife Federation’s headquarters in Reston, VA when a mother raccoon and four babies were spotted climbing precariously around a giant tree snag outside our office window. (See video here.)

Today, we caught them for a sequel. Check out these cute “kits” snuggled up with their mother in the crook of the tree.
