Unfortunately, the gorgeous red and white models won’t be offered in the states, at least for the time being. The phone can also be purchased through Sprint on their payment plan. Those who pre-order now should receive their device by early June. Although the specs might not completely match those of the Galaxy S8, the HTC U11 comes in significantly cheaper while still including some impressive hardware. As an avid phone fanatic, I’m constantly checking Craigslist and Cell Trader Online for my next device. Earlier this week, I spotted a used, unlocked Galaxy Note 4 on Craigslist for the fair price of $450. After negotiating a well-lit, public location to check it out at, the seller and I met up. At first and even second glance, it looked like a minty Samsung made Note 4. After I jumped slightly deeper into the hardware and software however, it was clear I was handling very well made knockoff.

If you’re an avid Android fan like myself, you’ve no doubt scoured craigslist for your next gadget. Unfortunately, in addition to worrying about blacklisted or stolen devices, you also have to watch out for knock-off devices. These can range from the cheapest of clones, to solid, metal phones like the Galaxy Note 4 I almost purchased. With these tips, you’ll be able to easily spot a knockoff.

Here are some tips to ensure your hard-earned money is spent on the real McCoy:

Hardware Tells:

• Build quality is usually an easy tell. A fake will be made out of cheaper feeling materials and often be a slightly different size. Also look at the manufacturer and carrier logos, as they will also be slightly altered. Pull off any screen protectors and check if the display is glass or cheap feeling plastic. The Note 4 I looked at had incredible convincing hardware. It even had metal sides. However, the Samsung logo was missing part of the “A” and the display was obviously covered in plastic.
• Displays are another area knockoffs will come up short. Instead of using even a mid-grade display, they typically feature the cheapest of cheap panels. Check viewing angles, colors reproduction, and pixel density. This was the third giveaway on my Note 4; the colors obviously didn’t pop as we’ve come to expect from AMOLEDs.
• Battery capacity. To save on costs, fakes will usually use a slightly smaller battery. This is obviously only helpful if the device is one of the few that houses a replaceable battery. You could take the time to install a battery monitoring app, but there are usually many easier to find tells.
• Fakes run on lower quality hardware. I have yet to see a fake that had a processor equal to that of the genuine article. If processor type(dual, quad) or speed isn’t listed in the “About” menu, go ahead and check the memory. Go into the “Apps” menu in “Settings” and swipe over to the “Running” list. Check for the amount of memory at the bottom of the screen. The Note 4 clone I looked at had only 2GB of memory instead of 3GB.
• After checking those four areas, take some time to look at the smaller details. Hopefully, you reviewed pictures of this model before going to look at one. Is the sim card slot in the same location? Does it have a fingerprint reader? Duo Camera? You get the idea. Knockoffs usually lack the smaller details.

Software Tells:

• Ironically, not finding bloatware can be the inconsistency that ruins the otherwise sweet deal. Occasionally, fakes will include some clones of the factory software, but they’ll be obviously lacking. The Note 4 I looked at only had the S-Health app.
• Restart the phone and check the boot screen animation. More often than not, it will display “Android”, but not the manufacturer’s logo or stock boot animation.
• Go into “Settings”, then “About” and check which version of Android it’s running. Knockoffs are usually a step or two being in the software department. In the case of the Note 4 though, it was running Android 4.4 KitKat, exactly what the real Note is running.
• Manufacture’s skin. Check if the skin over Android is complete and consistent. Most of the time, it will fail in the rarely accessed locations. On the fake Note 4, the software update page wasn’t skinned at all. Also check the notification shade. Usually, it’s a step behind or completely different than the skin it’s attempting to mimic.

Craigslist deals often go down in a just a few minutes. Always meet in a public location, like inside a fast food restaurant or mall. If you feel rushed or as if anything at all isn’t right, leave. Chances are, it’s stolen, about to be blacklisted, or a fake. It can be hard to turn down incredible discounts on the latest tech, but you’ll more often than not be left with an expensive paperweight of questionable legality.

Google Now was such a great addition to the Android line up when it was first introduced, and has only gotten better with each update. Everyone knows what Siri is and can’t wait to hold that home button down to ask it a question. Not as many people completely understand what Google Now is and how powerful of a tool it can be throughout your day. In the screenshot above, I was looking for Google Customer Service to help with fixing a loose charging port on my Nexus 7. Google Now ultimately brought me to the Asus tech support, and got my Nexus 7 fixed.

Google Now truly is an amazing tool. Have lyrics to a song, but have no idea who sings it? Google Now it. Truck has a flat tire and not mechanically inclined? Google Now it. Need to send a text or make a phone call without touching your device? Google Now it. Too lazy to touch an app to open it? Google Now it. Need a recipe? You get the point. If your need more tips and tricks for Google Now, open Google Now and just say “help.”

Siri had celebrities using her (or it) on quite a few commercials when it was first introduced, and even now for that matter. Everyone with an iPhone couldn’t wait to take Siri for a spin and ask it dopey questions. Google Now has not, and probably will not, received the exposure Siri did, but it really should because it is one of the coolest and most helpful features Android has to offer in my opinion.

I have three other Android users in my household, two of which are on Jellybean and the other KitKat, so Google Now is there and ready for them to use. One of them use it, the other two do it the old-fashioned way by going to Google.com and typing their question (which by the way, Google Now does way more on an Android device than Google.com).

For those of you reading this, you know Google Now is much more powerful tool than Siri. I am sure most of you have used both and seen the results first hand. My question is, what does Google have to do to get Google Now in the lime light like Siri had and has? Should there be more on-screen instructions to new users? Commercials with cheesy celebrities? Or just keep it going the way we are and that’s pretty much word of mouth (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing)? I love my whiskies, all kinds, and have found this app to be truly awesome. It has shown me whiskies I’ve never heard of, but get good reviews. You can also read reviews from other users on a specific whiskey or find a perfect whiskey for any occasion.

This app is definitely worth a try, and who knows, maybe you’ll discover a new favorite drink.

So, you’ve been hearing about the yellow screen tint on the OnePlus One eh? If you happen to have one of these phones, haven’t heard about it, or are not affected by this, you should listen up.

Some customers have been reporting that their devices having a yellowish tint to the bottom of their screens. OnePlus states that this is an issue with the glue that was used to adhere the screen to the glass. Okay, fair enough, but then why is OnePlus refusing to RMA any of these devices because of a manufacturers defect? In the event some people have been issued a RMA for their device, they are being asked to pay for the return shipping – which can get pretty expensive.

That is outrageous! Anytime I have ever had a defective device, I have been able to send it in for repair with no issues, aside from the standard trouble shooting that takes place, with a return label pre-paid issued for said return.

This is all being brought to light when one person emailed TK Tech News about their experience. From there it has gone even deeper.

OnePlus has flat out refused to return such devices because they state it does not fall into return policy. I’m sorry, but as a new company trying to make it in this fast paced tech world, you should be bending over backwards to appease people with affected devices. Instead, they have elected to try and sweep it under the rug and even in some cases flat out delete OPO forum users posts on the matter and even ban some.

You can watch the video in which TK Tech News explains in further detail what is going on(NSFW due to some language) and some of the things he has come across in his search for answers. It is worth a view if you are considering purchasing a OnPlus One.

Editor’s Note: Most of these scenarios are simply he said/she said. However, there are an awful lot of these allegations and videos floating around. Hopefully these responses about RMA’s are simply misguided employees, but at this time OnePlus has not stepped forward to even deny or simply address these claims.

HTC updated the HTC Dot View app to now include themes and recent calls to the “lock screen.” You are now able to select a background image that is viewable through the cover. HTC also added the ability to swipe left or right to see more than one notification, as well as a redial feature for your last three calls. These are welcome features, as before this update you could only see one notification at a time, and you had to open the case to place a call.

While cases are not for everyone, if you have the HTC One M8, the HTC Dot View case is worth a look. It is far from perfect overall(the biggest flaw is that when folded open the cover tends to act like a spring when you type), but the design and fit are perfect. Add in the fact that it has added functionality of being able see notifications while still closed(and thus still protecting your screen), and the case has a lot going for it. If you are familiar with Active Notifications on the Moto X, the concept is similar. You are able to see notifications at a glance with the HTC Dot View case. However, unlike the Moto X and Active Notifications, there is no interaction with the notifications that acts as a shortcut into the given app.
