I really needed to read this. Condolences to you and your family.
2020 has been the worst year for me. My dad passed away just before Christmas 2019, just 10 days after I had my son. My brothers were estranged so I became the next of kin. I literally fell out with my brothers about his final wishes and they had a memorial service in January without me. I’ll never speak to them again! I’ve had some devastating martial issues with my husband, the COVID pandemic has taken so many loved ones, some of my favorite celebrities passed away, my aunt died ON MY BIRTHDAY, my husband’s grandmother has terminal cancer and is currently in hospice care, and now my 18-year old niece is in the ICU with meningitis and seizures. I’m really trying to look at the silver lining but it’s grim. Thank you for your encouragement.

I agree with you, Marissa. Youtubers are the new rappers (even though rappers are still a thing). The thing is that both seem to be an easy and quick route to financial success and fame. YouTube-ing has become as lucrative as rapping used to be and accessible to the average Joe while lawyers, doctors and certainly teachers go to school for 6-12 years, work around the clock for less than most successful YouTubers. It’s a no-brainer to most kids. Luckily, times change and so do the kids minds. I’m sure your little cousin will change is mind several times between now and the time he’s able to find a career.

I’m so glad you highlighted this. It’s crazy because I have literally changed my perception about some of my favorite celebrities after they’ve begun posting “personal experiences” with certain products that you know they aren’t using and being paid to lie about. What they don’t realize is they damage their own credibility by trying to lend credence to another brand for pay. I’ve even seen some followers comment on how fake their spiel on the product seems and how they’ve seen the exact same thing on someone else’s post and they don’t respond. After reading you post, they DEFINITELY need to adhere to the guidelines you laid out if for no other reason than to sustain the credibility of their own brand.

I would personally say political advertising on social media is unethical with the amount of misinformation that circulates there and the potential for miseducation to vital voters but, at the same time, if not on social media, it’s on television and other media so it wouldn’t be fair not to allow it. Quite honestly, I’ve seen some Trump reelection ads that tout some egregiously false claims on CNN, the very network that criticizes him the most and that he seems to despise the most. But, ad dollars are ad dollars and if they have the money to advertise it, no one will turn that money down.

We spoke about this topic in my CMGT 500 Class over the summer when discussing CSR. I personally worked for a company that was outed not too long after the George Floyd incident when trying to hop on the Black Lives Matter Banwagon to save face. It exploded in their face when a former employee tweeted about her experience as a Black woman working in the Publicity department and how her superior, who was currently the Co-President of the Marketing department of the company laughed when another colleague dressed in blackface for Halloween. These incidents were reported to HR and it was swept under the rug. Not too long after her post went viral, the chairman of the company rolled out enterprise-wide sensitivity training, which wasn’t enough if you ask me. Pull up or shut up is vital in racial reckoning and I feel like it will clean up a lot of inequities across the board.

Honestly, I’m on the fence about Cancel Culture because, in most cases, people who are cancelled have BEEN doing the things they were doing and only recently got caught. People like Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby and R. Kelly deserve to be canceled. On the other hand, when Kevin Hart was asked to host the Oscars and someone pulled out a Tweet from 2009 where he expressed some homophobic views and essentially canceling his opportunity to host the Oscars was completely ridiculous. Sometimes, the best way to get someone to be held accountable is to do it publicly.
