The main objective of the conservation works on the murals of the hall was the consolidation of the different layers of paint. Equally important was the reduction of the saline content in the surfaces of the murals in the hall of the Palazzo Patriarcale.
The interventions that we performed were the following: pre-consolidation of the layers of paint, desalination, consolidation of the plasters, filling of the gaps in the plaster, restoration of the gaps in the painted layers.

In this project we restored and consolidated the private residence on the top floor of Palazzo Grimani, at a stone’s throw from the Grand Canal.
The residence overlooks one of the most elegant areas of the city: Campo Santa Maria del Giglio.
The apartment, with its rooftop terrace overlooking the Grand Canal and the Salute Church, has been completely restored.
The minimalist modern furnishings enhance both the spacious interior and the simple design.

The altar that we proceeded to restore is situated in a room next to the back entrance of the church.
The frontal panel of the altar appeared deteriorated. Because of the abundant raising damp, the Istrian stone was disintegrated and brittle.
The inlayed plates embellishing the front were detached and shattered on the floor.
First off, we photographed, recorded, collected and removed the plates to reassemble them.
In the meantime, the altar was dusted and rinsed at least twice. Two rounds of absorbent compresses made with sepiolite, cellulose pulp and demineralised water, were layered on the altar. Each absorbent compress was left to air dry for at least 5 days, until it naturally fell on the floor when fully dried.
Once the amount of salt and humidity in the stone was sensibly reduced, the altar underwent a thorough consolidation.
At the end of the consolidation phase, all the previously reconstructed plates were put back in place.

CLEANING OPERATION AND RESTORATION OF THE ANCIENT MOSAIC FLOOR

As reported in the “Gente Veneta” article of February 7th 2020, the restoration was due to the damages caused by the exceptionally high tide that hit Venice in November 2019.
Here we worked on a mosaic pavement with tiles in the shape of triangles or “wolf’s tooth” dating back to the XII century. This floor is situated one level lower than the current floor.
First off, we removed the residues of sand, salt and fragments left behind by the high tide.
We then proceeded with the cleaning the pavement with an aqueous solution enriched with surfactants. The purpose of this solution, emulsified on the surface with soft brushes, was to disinfect from the salty water and to avoid humidity to go deeper into the structure.
The solution was carefully removed, the surface deeply rinsed, and the excess water diligently suctioned.

Many churches in the historic centre of Venice have been damaged by the exceptionally high tide of November 2019. Depending on their position in the city, some churches have been more spoiled than others.
The Patriarcato di Venezia gave us in charge 21 churches. This opportunity allowed us to see and work on some rare and fine works of art, not all of which are open to the public.
We had to perform cleaning operations and restoration of minor damages caused by the infiltrations of the salty high tide on the precious marbles and wooden furniture of the churches and sacristies.

RESTORATION OF A PRIVATE PROPERTY

In this intervention we dealt with the restoration of the top floor of Palazzo Salvioni, located in the Castello district right in front of the Church of Sant’Antonin.
Palazzo Salvioni was built around 1550 by the Cubli family, wealthy Greek merchants at the time. The architecture is attributed to Jacopo Sansovino, a follower of Michelangelo.
During the 17th century the fortunes of the Cubli family changed and the palazzo passed to the Salvioni family.
Throughout the 18th century Ca’ Salvioni was embellished with beautiful stuccoes and paintings.
The Palazzo Salvioni apartment has been restored by the current owners with the utmost care to preserve its antiquities while improving comfort with all modern facilities.

In this project we restored and consolidated the private residence on the top floor of a 19th century palazzo, in the Castello district.
The apartment, with its rooftop terrace overlooking the St. Mark’s Bell Tower and the San Zaccaria Church, has been completely restored. The works have focused on preserving this apartment’s unique features such as the original wooden beams that have been treated in order to stay exposed. The minimalist modern furnishings enhance both the spacious interior and the simple design.

Elegant Palazzo Monti is home to Hotel Gorizia a La Valigia, a charming 3 star hotel in the very heart of Venice. The Hotel, with its privileged location, is one of the best hotels near Piazza San Marco.
The restoration works involved some rooms and common areas of the hotel. The redistribution of the space and of the bathrooms in the rooms resulted in more comfort for the guests.

The Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute in Venice stems from the desire of the city of Venice to end the 1630 plague. The building works of the Basilica started in 1631, following the project of famous architect Baldassarre Longhena. The Basilica is fascinating for its majesty and for the devotional relationship between the church and the city. Every year, on the 21st of Novembers, day of the holy patron, the citizens go on a pilgrimage in honor of this relationship.
The restoration and consolidation works involved the inlay marble floor of the Sanctuary, High Altar and Choir. Over 200 square meters and 4500 pieces of marble were removed, restored inside the Basilica, and put back in place at the end of the works. While the inlay pieces were being accurately restored, a floor heating system was being installed at the base the pavement.
The operations of documentation, posting and repositioning of the marble inlays required discipline, precision and a careful planning of the work phases. Everyone’s experience allowed for a successfully accurate restoration in a limited time period. The restoration of the pavement honored the specific features of the marble inlay, restoring its original splendor and better conservation conditions.

Restoration of the inlay pavement of the Altar of Saint’Antonio

The altar is attributed to Baldassarre Longhena and dates back to 1663 ca. The numerous archeological stone findings are a clear explanation of the importance of this Altar. The pavement was in much deteriorated conditions because of the rise of abundant humidity and minerals from the ground.
The conservative state was further compromised by previous improper restoration works. Some marble slabs were placed on a plaster basis, a not recommended material for marble as it is full of sulphate.
70 elements of the pavement have been removed, cleaned in desalinated water and repositioned on a warm colophony base. The colophony base was chosen as it complies perfectly with the traditional Venetian technique. In fact, in old days, natural resin was abundantly imported from the orient; it is hydrophobic and highly adhesive, allowing a perfect isolation of the marble pavement from humidity.
