It's Tea Time!

Join us on Saturday, September 14, 2024 and learn how to create your own tea cup candle (vanilla or lavender scented).

You may bring your own tea cup (7 oz. or less) or the Library will furnish one for you.

Please do not bring a one-of-a-kind or heirloom tea cup for this craft.

All other supplies will be provided for this craft.

Please note that this craft requires that the candle set-up overnight. You will need to leave your candle at the library (with your name on it) and pick it up the next day or within a few days of completing your candle.

After creating your candle, have some tea and cookies; learn some history about tea; and see if you can answer some tea trivia!

Two classes will be offered, both on Saturday, September 14. One class will be from 1:00 -- 2:00 PM and the other from 3:00 -- 4:00 PM.

Open to those ages 18 and up, each class will be limited to 15 attendees.

REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.

Learn about The Ohio Grassman (Ohio's version of Bigfoot), South Bay Bessie (Lake Erie's version of the Loch Ness Monster), the Loveland Frog, the Melonheads, vampire and werewolf sightings, and other eerie cryptids.

Mr. Willis will be selling and signing his books after the presentation.

Please join Bobette Braxton with the John Gee Black Historical Center on Sunday, August 18 at 2:00 PM for a presentation on slave medicine.

Bobette will discuss how herbs, trees, and some unexpected things were used by slaves to heal and strengthen their bodies for the laborious work on plantations.

Bobette has spent more than 15 years presenting programs on slave medicine and their uses both at the John Gee Black Historical Center and other venues.

On Sunday, April 14 at 2:00 PM, please join Dr. Robert L. Lawson as he discusses the Power of Positive Poetry.

This discussion and workshop is designed to encourage creativity, originality and experimentation in writers and speakers as well as to show the power and importance of poetic delivery.

Dr. Lawson will be reciting various authors such as James Weldon Johnson, author of "The Creation", and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, author of "The Psalm of Life". He will also be incorporating some of his original poetry such as Destined for Greatness, Be a Trail Blazer, and other notable selections.

These selections will show the power and importance of poetic delivery through the oral interpretation of poetry and the applicability of its content to the pursuit of life endeavors as well as to help others to develop an even deeper appreciation for the art and exploration of poetry.

After the presentation, Dr. Lawson will be available to entertain questions from the audience and to sell and autograph a number of his original works.

Dr. Lawson is an author and speaker in the field of self-development. He is the author of twelve books and has created numerous courses of study for Ohio University students in Chillicothe and Zanesville, Ohio.

His teaching career began at Gallia Academy High School, and from there he continued to teach English at Marshall University, Shawnee State University, and Georgetown Junior/Senior High School. He has since retired from Chillicothe High School where his focus was in helping juniors and seniors transition from high school to college. He is a 1973 graduate of the University of Rio Grande and a 1978 graduate of Marshall University. He also holds a doctorate degree from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Needing help deciding the best energy options for your household?

If so, join us on Monday, January 29 from 6:00 -- 7:30 PM as a representative from the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) will educate attendees on a variety of utility related matters, including Energy Choice Ohio and consumer protection tips.

Time will be allotted for a question and answer session.

Space is limited to 35 attendees, so registration is required.

On Saturday, February 3 at 10:00 AM, please join Tom O'Grady, Director of Outreach at the Southeast Ohio History Center, as he presents "Lord Dunmore's War and the Fort Gower Resolves".

This presentation will cover the story of Lord Dunmore's War in the autumn of 1774. Topics will include the April 1774 massacre of Chief Logan's family; the Battle of Point Pleasant and the Treaty of Camp Charlotte in October of that same year; Chief Logan's famous speech; and the Fort Gower Resolves, considered by some academics and historians as the first American declaration of independence.

Come learn about an important piece of both Ohio and West Virginia history.

A question and answer session will follow the presentation.

This event is presented by Bossard Memorial Library and the Our House Tavern.

WE ARE NOW CREATING A WAITLIST FOR THE COOKIE DECORATING WORKSHOPS.

Waitlist registration will be taken in the order of date and time received. Those on the waitlist will be notified if there are any cancellations.

Cancellations could occur for any of the workshops -- please think about being flexible in regards to the dates and times you would like to attend.

Make something sweet this February with a cookie decorating workshop.

Selena Hunt (with Flour Girls Baking Company) will lead this workshop and show you how to decorate your own set of cookies.

Each participant will be provided with six (6) cookies and four (4) containers of colored icing -- everything needed to create cookie masterpieces. Participants might want to bring their own apron -- in case things get messy!!

Three (3) workshops will be offered, two on Saturday, February 3 from 2:00 PM -- 4:00 PM and from 4:30 PM -- 6:30 PM, and one on Sunday, February 4 from 2:00 -- 4:00 PM. Each class will be limited to 20 participants and is open to those 16 and over.

PLEASE NOTE: The Library is paying per person for the workshop and will be charged accordingly. So, please, if you have registered and find out that you will not be able to attend, let us know as soon as possible so that we can move someone from the waitlist into your slot.

Surviving the Fall: An Evening with Golden Gate Bridge Jump Survivor Kevin Hines site_admin Tue, 09/19/2023 - 1:37pm

Bossard Library and the Gallia-Jackson-Meigs ADAMH Board will host a special evening with international speaker, mental health advocate, filmmaker, author, and suicide attempt survivor, Kevin Hines.

Kevin will be sharing his inspirational story of survival and growth on Thursday, November 2, 2023 at 7:00 PM in the Gallia Academy High School Performing Arts Center (2855 Centenary Road, Gallipolis, Ohio).

At the age of 19, two years after being diagnosed with bipolar disorder, Kevin attempted to take his own life by jumping off of the Golden Gate Bridge. He is only one of 36 (less than 1% of those who jump) to have survived the fall from the bridge. Many factors contributed to his miraculous survival including a sea lion which kept him afloat until the Coast Guard arrived.

Kevin now travels the world sharing his story of hope, healing, and recovery while teaching people of all ages the art of wellness and the ability to survive pain with true resilience. Kevin's will to live and stay mentally well has inspired people worldwide. His compelling story has touched diverse, global audiences within colleges and universities, high schools, corporations, clergy, military, clinicians, health and medical communities, law enforcement organizations, and various industries. Thousands have communicated to Hines that his story helped save their lives.

Kevin believes in the power of the human spirit and in the fact that you can find the ability to live mentally well. His mantra: "Life is a gift, that is why they call it the present. Cherish it always." His motto: #BeHereTomorrow and every day after that.

In 2006, Kevin's story was featured in the acclaimed film The Bridge. In the summer of 2013, Kevin released his bestselling memoir titled Cracked Not Broken, Surviving and Thriving After a Suicide Attempt. Premiering in 2018, Suicide: The Ripple Effect, Kevin's feature-length documentary film, chronicles his personal journey and the impact his suicide attempt had on those around him and his life's work since.

This event, co-sponsored by Bossard Memorial Library and the Gallia-Jackson-Meigs ADAMH (Alcohol, Drug Addiction, and Mental Health) Board, is free and open to all.
