When we received this story from one of our participant’s family members, we wanted to share this as it summarises exactly what we do and care most at Auscare – supporting you and your loved ones to the highest level. 

Here’s Anna’s* story to share: 

My name is Anna and I am writing to Auscare Community on behalf of myself and my sister Melanie*. We received the most wonderful support from a member of your staff, Ellen. 

Melanie (with some help from me) has full time care of our mum who is 87 and requires PegTube feeding, but as she has  upper level MND she is unable to help and really can’t be left alone for any length of time during the course of a day.

We are on the waitlist for Federal Government services but we’re ringing around to see if there was any private service that we could employ to provide in home flexible respite and/or emergency respite.

Brick Walls were what we encountered until we spoke to Ellen!

Ellen came to the home and carefully navigated us through the complicated Aged Care path and with the restrictions of Mum’s condition. She took the time to explain various options open to us and has given us the time to make decisions and the ability to reconnect with her and your services.

Your company is in good hands with Ellen being given the scope to travel and then sit with clients as they get their head around the process and their heart around the accompanying emotions.

Ellen showed us compassion and gave us time. Look after her!

John (90), had wandered away from his home in the early hours, the police found him a few hours later and returned him home to Edna.

Our community manager listened to Edna, they both had no government funded services or close family support. They had a couple of elderly friends but unfortunately were unable to assist.

With Edna’s approval we visited the home and commenced the journey to receiving support to assist both herself and her husband.

Auscare liaised with Edna and John’s GP for any supporting information for our referrals and requests including: 

• My Aged Care referral requesting urgent ACAT assessment for John
• Regional Assessment Service for supports for Edna
• Carers Gateway for support for Edna, to assist in her caring role
• Alzheimer’s for guidance and understanding of John’s condition

Auscare provided the conduit for Edna and John, guiding and supporting them along their journey. 

There are other support options which were provided to both to ensure they were safe within their home.

It is now a few months and they are a different couple, with many supports commencing within a short time frame.

Edna is very happy; she has support to go shopping and some help in their garden through the Commonwealth Home Support Program.  A high priority Home Care Package has commenced providing the much-needed support for John.

John is content and enjoying his visits and excursions with his community carers.

The home care journey has commenced and there is much more needed to support both Edna and John to remain together at home and the Auscare community team will be there for them on that journey.

The CHC33015 Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing and Disability) provides learners with an entry level qualification into the Health, Aged Care and Disability Sector. 

This nationally accredited qualification is recognised in all States and Territories in Australia. 

This course is designed for individuals wanting to work in residential Aged Care facilities, hostels, Hospitals, clients’ home environment and respite care or community groups with older people, residential services, outreach services, individualised support services and adult training services.

Through this certification, some of our graduating learners have continued on to become Aged Care Workers, Assistants in Nursing, Disability Support Workers and School Officers (working with children with disabilities). 

One of our recent successful learners who completed the Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing and Disability) – Yehsi Tshering – shares his learning journey recently with us.

Auscare: Thanks for wanting to share your story Yehsi. What made you study the Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing and Disability)?

Yehsi: I had worked over 5 years with Special Need people back home in my country and decided to continue with my same career. Something that motivates me to take up this course is to help those people who are in need of help and contribute to making lives better. Being able to do this will provide me with better job satisfaction as there’s nothing better than seeing other people happy or smiles on their faces. 

Auscare: What are your plans now that you have completed your certification?

Yehsi: After my course and work placement I gained a position within the aged care and disability organisation which I am thrilled about. At the same time I will continue to try and uplift my qualification in similar areas. Down the line and after 1 – 2 years of experience I look forward to seeing myself equipped with better knowledge skills and position. 

Auscare: Why did you choose to study with Auscare?

Yehsi: I discussed options of where and who to study with other past students and they recommended Auscare because the course and its content is rich in comparison to other training institutions. The practical component of the course is also great. I personally feel that Auscare is one of the best training providers and its overall management of the organisation is very clean.

Auscare: What did you enjoy most about your studies?

Yehsi: The syllabus is well tailored and taught by an experienced trainer. The courses are also very student centered and flexible, and the mode of providing training is very systematic and prompt. Studying with Auscare allows me to keep adding new skills and techniques for providing better care services.

One of the guiding principles that the report focussed on was education and training. Having an operational training organisation ourselves, we were glad to see that the importance of education and training is being recognised by the government as a significant part of aged care workforce.

In 2017 there were 3.8 million Australians aged 65 and over, making up 15% of the total population. For comparison, in 1977 there were just 1.3 million, making up just 9% of the population. As the aged population has increased, the aged care workforce has tried to meet demand for quality care.

The expectations of consumers, including individuals, families, carers and communities, continues to evolve, and the aged care workforce must grow and accommodate their needs. Attracting and retaining a well-trained workforce is an important part of meeting these expectations and ensuring a strong aged care workforce in Australia.

Regular training is vital for aged care workers, keeping their existing skills refreshed and providing an opportunity to work on skills that may need improvement. Education and training of the aged care workforce in Australia also allows members of the workforce to develop professionally, increasing opportunities for career progression and ensuring safe practices.

The report emphasised the importance of improving training of the aged care workforce. It reinforced the need to focus on practical skills in particular. While having experience and qualifications is an important part of the job application process, it’s also important to stand out and demonstrate your suitability clearly. So we’ve put together three helpful tips for completing your healthcare job application and making a great impression on a potential employer!

Be clear and concise

Keep your resume at two pages at most, and make sure it’s neat and easy to read. If you’re unsure how to begin, you can find plenty of free resume templates online. As you start writing, remember to tailor your resume to whatever position you’re applying for. Leave out any details unrelated to the position as they may distract from your relevant skills, experience and qualifications.

You might also include a short personal summary at the top of your resume. This could be a few sentences detailing your relevant professional experience and what skills and attributes you will bring to the role.

After you finish creating your resume, go back and proofread it. Good communication skills are important for healthcare workers, so a resume full of mistakes probably won’t make a great impression.

Be honest about yourself

Before you begin your healthcare job application, make sure you’re qualified for the job. It’s a waste of your time applying for a job if you don’t meet the basic requirements of the position.

With that in mind, never make false claims on your application either. Your potential employer will know if you have! If you apply for the same role when you are more qualified, you’ll probably be remembered for your past mistake.

Don’t omit important information that might affect your ability to perform the tasks of the job you’re applying for. For example, an inability to gain a Police Clearance will seriously restrict your ability to undertake a range of healthcare roles.

Be prepared to move forward with your application

Make a good impression on potential employers by being organised. Demonstrate your value by carefully reading and following all instructions on your healthcare job application and any resulting communications.

As you move forward with the selection process, double-check that you have all necessary documentation. This can include your identification documents like Medicare cards or passports, Tax File number, Superannuation details, registrations and Visas.

It’s smart to have any documents that are required for starting a new job ready before they are needed. Scan your ID and any documents proving you can work in Australia before you start your application to save time when a new employer needs copies. Then you’ll be able to get started in your new role quicker!

Maintain a good work-life balance

The flexibility of working for a staffing agency means you can pretty much choose your own hours. But it’s important not to overwork yourself. Take time off if you need to and don’t accept shifts if you feel can can’t work for personal or health-related reasons. Remember to have fun and relax as much as you can on your days off. Check out events and activities around your city (there are plenty of cool things to do in Perth), have fun with friends and family or just chill out and rest.

Stay physically healthy

Staying physically healthy is incredibly important for health care workers. Not only does it reduce risk in the work environment, it also keeps you feeling strong and focused. Make sure you get plenty of rest before and between shifts. Before you go to work, eat a healthy meal that will keep you feeling full but not bloated. Drink water while you’re working, especially on breaks when your shift is busy.

Work safe and work smart

Take care of yourself physically while on shift is also important. Be careful when using equipment or supporting patients and ensure your Manual Handling training is up to date. Look out for others using equipment around you too – stay alert and aware of hazards to keep yourself and others safe.

Taking care of your body and mind are just as important as each other. So take some time during this year’s Mental Health Week (and every week) to check in with yourself and carry out some self-care!
