The Most Important Thing

I am making a home inside myself. A shelter

of kindness where everything
is forgiven, everything allowed—a quiet patch

of sunlight to stretch out without hurry,

where all that has been banished

and buried is welcomed, spoken, listened to—released.

A fiercely friendly place I can claim as my very own.

I am throwing arms open
to the whole of myself—especially the fearful,

fault-finding, falling apart, unfinished parts, knowing

every seed and weed, every drop
of rain, has made the soil richer.

I will light a candle, pour a hot cup of tea, gather

around the warmth of my own blazing fire. I will howl

if I want to, knowing this flame can burn through
any perceived problem, any prescribed perfectionism,

any lying limitation, every heavy thing.

I am making a home inside myself
where grace blooms in grand and glorious

abundance, a shelter of kindness that grows

all the truest things.

Sooner or later, everything falls away.
You, the work you’ve done, your successes,
large and small, your failures, too. Those
moments when you were light, alongside
the times you became one with the night.
The friends, the people you loved
who loved you, those who might have wished
you ill, none of this is forever. All of it is
soon to go, or going, or long gone.

Everything falls away, except the thread
you’ve followed, unknowing, all along.
The thread that strings together all you’ve
been and done, the thread you didn’t know
you were tracking until, toward the end,
you see that the tread is what stays
as everything else falls away.

Follow that thread as far as you can and
you’ll find that it does not end, but weaves
into the unimaginable vastness of life. Your
life never was the solo turn it seemed to be.
It was always part of the great weave of
nature and humanity, an immensity we
come to know only as we follow our own
small threads to the place where they
merge with the boundless whole.
Each of our threads runs its course, then
joins in life together. This magnificent tapestry –
this masterpiece in which we live forever.

Dear Human:

You’ve got it all wrong.
You didn’t come here to master unconditional love. That is where you came from and where you’ll return.
You came here to learn personal love. Universal love. Messy love. Sweaty love. Crazy love. Broken love. Whole love.  Infused with divinity. Lived through the grace of stumbling. Demonstrated through the beauty of messing up. Often.

You didn’t come here to be perfect.
You already are.

You came here to be gorgeously human. Flawed and fabulous. And then to rise again into remembering.

But unconditional love? Stop telling that story.
Love, in truth, doesn’t need any other adjectives. It doesn’t require modifiers. It doesn’t require the condition of perfection. It only asks that you show up.  And do your best. That you stay present and feel fully. That you shine and fly and laugh and cry and hurt and heal and fall and get back up and play and work and live and die as YOU.

It’s enough. It’s Plenty.

A Compassionate Kit Bag is a powerful way to support yourself  in times of anxiety, overthinking, stress and reactivity.  When you feel you need support you can turn to your own personal kit bag to help yourself find soothing, calming and balance.

You can start creating your own Compassionate Kit Bag by gathering up a collection of objects which represent soothing and nurturing to you. These can be a mixture of objects that you find calming or uplifting, depending on what you might need at different times.

Try. to select a variety of different items which might appeal to all of your senses – sight, sound, touch, taste, smell.  Here are some suggested items you could include:

  • Soothing smells (eg. essential oils, hand cream, bath salts)
  • Soothing objects (eg. small rock, shell, soft cloth, crystal)
  • Memento connected with safety and calm (eg. souvenir, soft toy)
  • Music/song lyrics (self-compassion playlist)
  • A few poems, quotations, or small book
  • Meaningful pictures, postcards
  • Comforting Tastes (eg. herbal tea / coffee / hot chocolate sachet, small bar of chocolate, mint candy)
  • Microwave bean bag for warmth and weight or electric heating pad
  • Hobbies you enjoy;   small puzzle, drawing pencil, watercolours, doodle pad, colouring book, simple knitting project
  • Journal where you collect kind compassionate letters to yourself
  • Collage making materials (old magazines, glue, scissors)

Keep these in a bag or a box, or even create a mini go-to bag you can carry with you at all times. You can continually modify your kit as you find new items that appeal to your sense of calm and safety.

Just mentioning the word ‘shame’ can often cause us to hold our breath. We all know it. That grip in the gut and sick feeling inside. Isolating. Sometimes immobilizing.

It can help to remember that shame is a universal emotion.  It evolved to help us stay connected socially – with friends, family and community.  It is an old, old emotion that comes from the desire to be safe, seen and loved. Universal desires.

The poem by Hafiz called With That Moon Language speaks to this universal desire:

Admit something:
Everyone you see, you say to them, “Love me.”
Of course you do not do this out loud, otherwise
someone would call the cops.
Still, though, think about this, this great pull in us to connect.
Why not become the one who lives with a
full moon in each eye that is
always saying,
with that sweet moon language,
what every other eye in
this world is
dying to
hear?

The antidote to shame is self-compassion. Shame loosens its grip when we can turn towards it, feel it, understand it’s universality and begin to transform it with love. We learn to give ourselves what we really need.

Please join us in learning skills, practices and personal awareness that can help you nurture your innate capacity for self-compassion, mindfulness, and personal growth. Anyone can learn and everyone is welcome.

“We think that if we just meditated enough or jogged enough or ate perfect food, everything would be perfect. But from the point of view of someone who is awake, that’s death. Seeking security or perfection, rejoicing in feeling confirmed and whole, self-contained and comfortable, is some kind of death. It doesn’t have any fresh air. There’s no room for something to come in and interrupt all that. We are killing the moment by controlling our experience. Doing this is setting ourselves up for failure, because sooner or later, we’re going to have an experience we can’t control: our house is going to burn down, someone we love is going to die, we’re going to find out we have cancer, a brick is going to fall out of the sky and hit us on the head, somebody’s going to spill tomato juice all over our white suit, or we’re going to arrive at our favorite restaurant and discover that no one ordered produce and seven hundred people are coming for lunch.”
The trick is to keep exploring and not bail out, even when we find out that something is not what we thought. That’s what we’re going to discover again and again and again. Nothing is what we thought.

Things are always in transition, if we could only realize it. Nothing ever sums itself up in the way that we like to dream about. The off-center, in-between state is an ideal situation, a situation in which we don’t get caught and we can open our hearts and minds beyond limit. It’s a very tender, nonaggressive, open-ended state of affairs. To stay with that shakiness—to stay with a broken heart, with a rumbling stomach, with the feeling of hopelessness and wanting to get revenge—that is the path of true awakening. Sticking with that uncertainty, getting the knack of relaxing in the midst of chaos, learning not to panic—this is the spiritual path.
Things falling apart is a kind of testing and also a kind of healing. We think that the point is to pass the test or to overcome the problem, but the truth is that things don’t really get solved. They come together and they fall apart. Then they come together again and fall apart again. It’s just like that. The healing comes from letting there be room for all of this to happen: room for grief, for relief, for misery, for joy.”

We think we get over things.
We don’t get over things.
Or say, we get over the measles
but not a broken heart.
We need to make that distinction.
The things that become part of our experience
never become less a part of our experience.
How can I say it?
The way to “get over” a life is to die.
Short of that, you move with it,
let the pain be pain,
not in the hope that it will vanish
but in the faith that it will fit in,
find its place in the shape of things
and be then not any less pain but true to form.
Because anything natural has an inherent shape
and will flow towards it.
And a life is as natural as a leaf.
That’s what we’re looking for:
not the end of a thing but the shape of it.
Wisdom is seeing the shape of your life
without obliterating (getting over) a single instant of it.
