It is with great sadness that BHR Wales shares the news that our friend and fellow volunteer, Paul Brabban, sadly passed away peacefully on Saturday 8th August 2026.
Paul was a valued member of the BHR Wales family, and his loss will be deeply felt by those who had the privilege of volunteering alongside him and getting to know him.
Giving Something Back
Paul’s reason for joining BHR Wales was particularly meaningful. Having spent a considerable amount of time in hospital himself, Paul wanted to give something back to the staff and patients he had encountered and who had been part of his journey.
That desire to give back led him to hospital radio and to BHR Wales, where he generously gave his own time to help us provide companionship, entertainment and a friendly voice to patients across the hospital.
It was a wonderful reflection of the person Paul was and of the spirit of hospital radio itself – people giving their time simply because they want to make somebody else’s day that little bit brighter.
Paul also brought with him an incredible knowledge of music and a wonderfully eclectic taste. You could never quite predict what might make it onto Paul’s playlist, and that was part of what we all loved about him.
His knowledge and enthusiasm for music shone through, and his wide-ranging musical tastes sparked plenty of conversations among his fellow volunteers. It is something that those who knew and worked alongside Paul will remember particularly fondly.
Like so many of the people who have given their time to hospital radio over the years, Paul became part of what makes BHR Wales so special. Our station is much more than the programmes we broadcast; it is a community of volunteers brought together by friendship, a love of radio and a shared desire to bring some company and entertainment to patients, staff and listeners.
Paul was very much a part of that community.
A Day of Remembrance for Paul
On Monday, BHR Wales will dedicate its programming to the memory of Paul, with special programmes celebrating his life, his time with the station and the memories he leaves behind.
During The BHR Breakfast Show, host Bill Everatt will be joined by BHR presenter Stewart Critchlow for a special conversation remembering Paul. Bill and Stewart will share some of their memories of him, talk about their time volunteering alongside him and reflect on the friend and fellow volunteer they knew.
Later in the day, Stewart will present a special edition of his programme dedicated to Paul, with music and memories as we celebrate a much-loved member of the BHR Wales family.
Given Paul’s passion for music and the wonderfully varied tastes he shared with us, it feels particularly fitting that we should remember him through the medium that brought him to our station and gave us so many happy memories together.
We hope Monday will not simply be a day of sadness, but an opportunity to celebrate Paul, remember the good times, enjoy some great music and recognise the contribution he made to BHR Wales, our hospital community and the people we are here to serve.
Our Thoughts Are With Paul’s Family
At this incredibly difficult time, everyone at BHR Wales would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to Paul’s wife, Claire, and to all of Paul’s family and friends.
We hope they can take some comfort in knowing how fondly Paul will be remembered by his friends and fellow volunteers at BHR Wales.
Paul originally came to our station because he wanted to give something back to the hospital community that had been there for him. In doing so, he became part of our own community too – and one that will not forget him.
Paul will remain part of the story of BHR Wales, and we are incredibly grateful for the time, friendship, music and commitment he shared with us.

Bridgend’s Hospital Radio has received a generous £250 donation from Coity Festivals, following the success of their Jam In The Castle event held at Coity Castle in June.
The popular live music event brought together local musicians, residents, and visitors for a day of entertainment in the historic surroundings of Coity Castle, with proceeds raised supporting local community causes. This year, organisers chose to support Bridgend’s Hospital Radio in recognition of the station’s ongoing work providing companionship, entertainment, and comfort to patients across the Princess of Wales Hospital.
The donation will help support the running of the station, which is staffed entirely by volunteers and relies on fundraising and community generosity to continue broadcasting 24 hours a day to patients.
Station Manager Wayne Dunkley expressed his gratitude for the support:
“We are incredibly grateful to Coity Festivals for choosing Bridgend’s Hospital Radio as a beneficiary of Jam In The Castle. Donations like this make a real difference and help us continue providing a friendly voice and a sense of normality to patients during what can be a difficult time. On Monday 21st October, BHR Wales was delighted to welcome a group of local independent councillors to our studios in Bridgend for a special visit.
The councillors were invited to see firsthand how the grant funding provided has been used to enhance our facilities and support the work of our dedicated volunteer team. The visit offered an opportunity to demonstrate the tangible impact of their generosity on the day-to-day running of the station and the wider hospital community we serve.
Thanks to this vital funding, BHR Wales has been able to:

Expand our reach, ensuring patients, staff, and visitors can enjoy our programmes across the hospital network
Our guests were given a behind-the-scenes tour of the studios, met some of our volunteers, and saw live broadcasting in action. They also learned more about the station’s ongoing mission — to provide comfort, entertainment, and companionship to hospital patients across the region.
Speaking after the visit, BHR Wales Station Manager, Wayne Dunley, expressed his gratitude for the continued support from local councillors and the community:

Bridgend’s Hospital Radio is proud to announce its momentous 40th anniversary of dedicated broadcasting to the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend, South Wales. For four decades, Bridgend’s Hospital Radio has been a steadfast companion to patients, staff, and visitors, providing a source of entertainment, comfort, and connection within the healthcare community.
Established in 1983, Bridgend’s Hospital Radio began as a small but passionate initiative to bring a touch of familiarity and cheer to the hospital environment. Over the years, the station has evolved, adapting to new technologies while maintaining its commitment to serving the hospital’s community.
Throughout its journey, Bridgend’s Hospital Radio has brought together volunteers from all walks of life who share a common goal: to uplift the spirits of those within the hospital walls. With a diverse array of programming, including music, interviews, request shows, and health-related segments, the station has become an integral part of daily life at the Princess of Wales Hospital.
“We are incredibly proud to have reached this remarkable milestone,” said Wayne Dunkley, Station Manager at Bridgend’s Hospital Radio. “Our volunteers have worked tirelessly to bring comfort, joy, and a sense of companionship to patients and their families during what can often be challenging times. All of the team at BHR Wales would like to express a huge congratulations to Connor Morgans on his success at the Hospital Broadcasting Association Awards 2022 picking up Gold in the Best Male Presenter category. This is the first award that BHR has ever won at the HBA Awards and we all agree that it could not have gone to a more deserving winner.
Connor recently became Programming Co-ordinator at BHR becoming a Trustee after 7 years of volunteering at the station.
Connor Morgans said:
“I am incredibly honoured to be a part of the board of trustees at Bridgend’s Hospital Radio (BHR). I’ve loved my time presenting at the station but very much look ahead to being involved in decisions and shaping BHR to be the best it can be. I hope I’m not the last and that other young people consider being a trustee for a charity that matters to them.”

BHR was not the only Welsh station to win big at this years awards with Station of the Year being won by our friends at Radio Ysbyty Gwynedd based at Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor and Radio Glamorgan at the University Hospital for Wales picking up Gold in the Best Station Promotion category and Bronze in the Best Special Event category.
BHR would like to extend a huge congratulations to all the winners and runners-up at this years HBA Awards, it is great to see so many hard working individuals awarded for the work that they put in on a voluntary basis to ensure Hospital Radio lives on.
