Dear Cathedral Community,

At the end of this school year, after serving for seven remarkable years as Cathedral’s President, Dan Carmody has chosen to embark on a new career as an executive at New Story Schools, a nationwide organization serving students in diverse learning environments. As Dan shared with me, “serving Cathedral has been the honor of my lifetime and an experience that I will forever cherish.”

Similarly, we will cherish Dan’s transformational leadership and all that he has done in serving Cathedral scholars over the past seven years. Under Dan’s leadership, Cathedral has soared to new heights. Enrollment is up 25%, we’ve experienced tremendous academic growth, our graduation and college matriculation rates have remained off the charts, community partnerships have flourished, the Adopt-A-Student Foundation’s supporting endowment has grown dramatically through our Cathedral Now, Cathedral Forever campaign, the Daley Center for Campus Ministry is thriving, and most importantly, our Catholic mission, culture and community have become stronger than ever.

A huge part of Cathedral’s rise in stature during Dan’s tenure is due to the dedication, talent and creativity of the team that he retained and recruited to serve our high-potential scholars. As Dan would tell you, a huge part of Cathedral’s success is due to the expertise and sustained commitment of our Principal, Karl Danso. I am proud to announce that Karl will succeed Dan as leader of Cathedral High School on July 1st, ushering Cathedral into its second century of transformative impact.

We anticipate a very smooth and seamless transition from Dan to Karl, given how closely they have worked together over the past three years and how closely they are aligned on Cathedral’s mission. Karl is a proven and outstanding leader who prioritizes our scholars above all else, and he brings deep experience to his new leadership role.

After earning his undergraduate and master’s degrees at Boston College, Karl launched his career in Washington D.C. at St. John’s College High School, first as a teacher for six years and then as Dean of Students for three years. He returned to Boston to join Catholic Memorial as Vice Principal for four years. Dan then recruited him to serve as Cathedral’s Principal in 2023. Karl is an esteemed graduate of Boston College’s Lynch Leadership Academy, where he honed his leadership skills and built a network of colleagues and friends who are devoted to a common calling. We are blessed to have Karl, who is ready to step into a new and exciting role to lead our community and to continue our inspiring path of excellence and success.

We look forward to supporting Karl in his new chapter at Cathedral High School. We will be forever grateful to Dan for pouring his heart and soul into Cathedral, and for all that he has done for our school, especially for securing Cathedral’s financial future, tirelessly advocating for our scholars, advancing our Catholic mission, and building a great team of leaders and teachers.

Warm regards,

Robert A. O’Neill, Jr.
Cathedral High School Board Chair

During April break, eleven Cathedral scholars traveled with our Daley Center for Campus Ministry to the Romero Center in Camden, NJ. Each day, along with their three faculty advisors, the scholars served community members in elderly homes, mental health hospitals, and homeless shelters, offering care, companionship, and assistance where it was needed most. Through their service, students made a meaningful impact while building empathy, teamwork, and a deeper sense of social responsibility.

This was the third consecutive year that this service-learning trip was made possible through Cathedral’s Daley Center for Campus Ministry.

“I also want to thank every coach that pushed me,” continued Ta’Qaire. “Your guidance didn’t just shape my dreams, it shaped me as a person… The long hours on and off the field finally paid off. And this isn’t the finish line. There will always be more work to do, and I’m ready for it.”

A new partnership between Cathedral High School and Emmanuel College guarantees admission and merit scholarships for eligible students.

Launched in 2025, the Emmanuel Saints Catholic Connection Guarantee provides a transparent and accessible path for Cathedral students to continue their studies in the heart of Boston.

“Emmanuel is privileged to partner with Cathedral High School to uplift the intellects and hearts of young people, while preparing them to thrive in a fast-changing world,” said Emmanuel College President Beth Ross. “The Saints Catholic Connection Guarantee is emblematic of our shared commitment to Catholic educational values—and brings current and future students within closer reach of the career- and life-shaping power of an Emmanuel education.”

The guarantee is available to students at partner schools who have earned a weighted GPA of 3.5 or higher through their junior year. Candidates must also apply to Emmanuel, and visit campus.

“We are thrilled to see our partnership with Emmanuel continue to grow and evolve,” said Dan Carmody, Cathedral High School President. “Their commitment to continuing educational access for Cathedral scholars through the Saints Catholic Connection Guarantee is reflective of their authentic belief in the potential of our Cathedral scholars and aligns in such meaningful and intentional ways with Cathedral’s mission. Through their foundation of love, care, and academic promise for all students, Emmanuel has become a home to so many of our Cathedral graduates over the years, and it’s with incredible admiration and gratitude that we thank them for making this next phase of our partnership possible.”

“When students and their families come to our campus, they experience our vibrant community in the Heart of Boston and see the benefits of our liberal arts core and focus on experiential learning,” said Ian Sonia, Emmanuel’s Associate Vice President of Undergraduate Enrollment. “The Saints Catholic Connection creates a seamless pathway for students at our partner schools to continue their educational journey at 400 The Fenway.”

For more information about the Saints Catholic Connection Guarantee, please contact Erica Leone, Cathedral’s Director of School and College Counseling at eleone@cathedralboston.org, or the Emmanuel Office of Admissions at 617-735-9715 or admissions@emmanuel.edu.

BOSTON – Since its founding in 1926, Cathedral High School has provided thousands of Boston-area families with a rigorous, faith-based education. This fall, Cathedral will kick off its Centennial celebrations by honoring 100 Centennial Heroes at the Adopt-A-Student Foundation Gala on October 30th.

“We could not be more excited and humbled to honor this group of incredibly generous and dedicated individuals, organizations, and foundations who have made our mission possible over the past 100 years,” said Dan Carmody, President of Cathedral High School. “It’s thanks to them that Cathedral High School is here to stay, and that we will be able to continue serving the amazing students and families of Greater Boston for another century.”

Nancy Lane ’69, CSJA is one of the Centennial Heroes who will be honored at the October 30th Gala. After graduating from Cathedral in 1969, Lane returned as a teacher in 1987 and has worked at the school ever since – as a guidance counselor, advancement team member, alumni ambassador, and, through it all, a dedicated advocate for Cathedral’s students and mission.

“Cathedral High School has educated a wide variety of communities to become successful people for 100 years,” said Lane. “In 1926, the Sisters of St. Joseph brought their charism to 74 Union Park Street in Boston and educated students with a rigorous curriculum to meet the needs of a changing world.”

Lane shared that when she returned as a teacher in the ’80s, Cathedral’s student body represented 26 different nations. “I am not a traveler,” she said. “But standing at 74 Union Park Street, I have seen the world.”

The full list of Centennial Heroes will be announced in the lead-up to the Gala, which will be held at the Boston Seaport Hotel on October 30th. To learn more about sponsorship opportunities or to purchase tickets to this special Centennial edition of the Adopt-A-Student Foundation Gala, visit cathedralboston.org/gala.
