What’s black and white and red all over? That’d be the Predator, as the movie monster is about to kick off a new comic book mini-series.

*Menacing recorded laugh*

He’s going to be in town with a few more days to kill. Of course, we’re talking about the Predator, and the “town” in question is the pages of a Marvel Comic. Don’t worry though, this doesn’t look like it’s going to be the Marvel Universe version of the alien killer.

From the sound of Predator: Black, White & Blood, the publisher’s newest stab at the license will be a self-contained mini-series that might be more to the liking of legacy fans. A four issue title, the book will present stories that span their own time periods and settings, all within “Predator history” according to Marvel.

In a cool twist, each issue will feature several stories, complete with their own separate creative teams. Issue #1 will star the talents of Joe Kelly, Álvaro López, Eliot Rahal, Brian Level, Sarah Gailey, and Fran Galán, and send Predators to the wilds of Australia, the middle-ages, and a… conference?

It’ll make sense, just scroll down to check out the details.

  • From the mad imaginings of Joe Kelly (Amazing Spider-Man, Deadpool) and rising artist Álvaro López (Captain Marvel,Beware the Planet of the Apes) comes a gut-twisting new take on Predator! A young Predator trying to prove himself prowls the Australian frontier, but his hunt goes south when a run-in with a group of humans from a convict colony changes the trajectory of everyone’s lives and takes readers on a journey never before seen in the Predator universe!
  • Writer Eliot Rahal makes his Marvel Comics debut with artist Brian Level in a bloody retelling of Arthurian legend that blends the horror of Predator’s space tech with classic sword and sorcery!
  • Writer Sarah Gailey (White Widow) and artist Fran Galán (Carnage) put the Yautja’s honor code to the test in a story of Predator infiltrating an international weapons industry conference!

A little bit of the old ‘Christmas in July’? Well, kinda/sorta, as this new Dark Horse announcement is for a Holiday-themed mini-series.

Where Christmas never ends

Did you ever get a case of the post-Christmas sads? If you’re one of the millions of people who celebrate the ancient holiday, chances are that you have at some point. It’s kind of a yearly thing for kids especially, at least it was for us. After all, it’s a bummer when all the gifts have been opened, the dinner has been eaten, the stockings have been rifled though, and school restarting looms ever larger.

But what if Christmas didn’t necessarily have to end? At least, not in the traditional sense? That’s the plot of Dark Horse Comics’ latest announcement, Christmas 356. From the creative team of Mikey Way, Jonathan Rivera, and Piotr Kowalski, the first issue of Christmas 365 will arrive just in time for the big holiday, and tell the tale of a family who’s been going through some rough times, only to find that the solution might be a year’s worth of the happiest of holidays.

The holidays weren’t always so tough for Peter Rockwell and his family, but a tragic and challenging year finds them stressed out and drifting apart when they should be pulling together. After accepting the wisdom of a Santa Claus at his local mall, Peter hatches a plan to give his family the best year ever, one Christmas at a time!

“Like most kids growing up, I never wanted Christmas to end,” said Way. “When it’s over, you’re left having to wait an entire year for that magical feeling to return. I would often fantasize…what if it never had to end? That very thought was what sparked this story. But as the saying goes, is too much of a good thing not so good?”

Christmas 365 is a satirical comedy about finding balance,” added Rivera. “It’s about pursuing your dreams without giving in to the temptation of a world that wants more and more of us each day, and learning the difference between what we want and what we need.  This book is also our love letter to all of the surreal suburban comedies we loved as kids like ‘Better Off Dead’ and ‘The ‘Burbs.’”

Dark Horse Comics press release

Christmas 365 #1 (of 4) will arrive in stores on December 4th, 2024. If you’re in San Diego this week for Comic Con though, you night want to stop by the Dark Horse booth (#2615). Way and Rivera will be on hand this Saturday, from 5-6:30pm (pacific time) to promote the upcoming title, and sign some stuff.

Just be forewarned, as this won’t be an ‘open’ autograph session, and you will need to secure a wristband if you want to get in on the fun.

Oni Press has a pair of EC Comics spine-tinglers on tap for spooky season, as the horror imprint’s return rolls on.

Boo

Just revealed by Oni Press and EC Comics, we’ve got your first looks at booth Epitaphs from the Abyss #4 and Cruel Universe #3. Those previews come in the form of a creep-tacular cover slate for both books, which will have multiple variants out there for fans to snap up.

All of what’s been shared looks beautifully fitting with the classic mags that the new comics are based on, loading up on disturbing imagery and straight out terror aplenty. Yeah, EC doesn’t really mess around in that arena. You know what you’re getting into as soon as you see the covers.

Things will kick off this October on the 2nd, when Cruel Universe #3 arrives. In that issue, an all-star team of talent will spin some tales that just might keep you up at night.

Cruel Universe #3

First, on October 2nd, the world’s most existentially devastating comic magazine plumbs new depths in CRUEL UNIVERSE #3 as the otherworldly talents of Cullen Bunn (The Sixth Gun) and Davíd Rubín (Sherlock Frankenstein), J. Holtham (Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale) and Kano(Gotham Central), and Zac Thompson (Cemetery Kids Don’t Die) and Dan McDaid (If You Find This…) begin a manned expedition to the extremes of human existence and imagine the terrifying possibilities of what to expect when the best of intentions meet the cold, hard reality of our worst instincts. The world and everything you hold dear within it may be doomed to the cold touch of entropy . . . BUT AT LEAST YOU CAN KEEP THIS COMIC AS A SOUVENIR!

Oni Press press release

Later in the month is when EC strikes again, with October 16th’s Epitaphs from the Abyss #4. Much like with Cruel Universe, Epitaphs from the Abyss promises a selection of stories to thrill and chill, and from the looks of the covers, they just might spook you to the bone.

That Lee Bermejo cover in particular is giving us nightmares already.

Epitaphs from the Abyss #4

Then, on October 16th, every tombstone tells a tale in EPITAPHS OF THE ABYSS #4 – the next unrelenting issue of EC’s flagship horror title! Fueled by the vengeful spirit of the legendary EC Comics, we proudly present all-new tales of the macabre and merciless from some of the top talents with a penchant for dragging you down to the bottom stair of despair!

This month: Live hard, die fast creators J. Holtham (The Horizon Experiment) and Raúl Allén (Dune, Secret Weapons), Amy Roy (The Lonely Store) and Claire Roe (Dark Spaces: The Hollywood Special), and Jay Stephens (Dwellings) and David Lapham (Stray Bullets) welcome you back into the cold grasp of the ABYSS—there’s no need to RSVP, and timeshares are available!

Fans of Dark Horse’s take on Cyberpunk 2077 will have a new collected edition to add to their libraries this fall, with the Omnibus Volume 1.

Get on the bus to Night City

While there’s no fresh news to share about future installments of the video game version of Cyberpunk 2077, there’s been plenty of movement in the comics arena. That’s thanks to CD Projekt Red’s deal with Dark Horse Comics, and has seen the publisher dish out a selection of new tales set in the game’s dark future.

If you’ve missed out on any of those, or if you’re just a big fan and you’d like to add a hardcover, book-length edition to your shelf, you’re going to love today’s reveal. Cyberpunk 2077 Omnibus Volume 1 will include a trio of bundled series’, spinning out of a stellar creative team that includes Cyberpunk and The Witcher writer Bartosz Sztybor.

“This first Omnibus shows why Cyberpunk 2077 is a very diverse universe,” says writer Sztybor. “Perfect for writers, where you can create an action packed story about trauma, vengeance tale about family and trust or a heist narrative about addictions. All these stories mix a popular genre with a deeper meaning, it’s always brutal, fun, exciting but it also tells you something about today’s world. That’s why I love Cyberpunk 2077 and that Omnibus – it’s a wild science-fiction ride that will leave you both excited and thinking about yourself and the world”.

Cyberpunk 2077 Omnibus Volume 1 collects Cyberpunk 2077: Trauma Team #1–4, Cyberpunk 2077: You Have My Word #1–4, and Cyberpunk 2077: Blackout #1–4, with contributions from a diverse creative team including writers Bartosz Sztybor (Cyberpunk 2077: Edgerunners, The Witcher: The Ballad of Two Wolves) and Cullen Bunn (Harrow County, Parasomnia), artists Miguel Valderrama (Giants, Rolled & Told), Jesús Hervás (Penny Dreadful, Clive Barker’s Hellraiser), and Roberto Ricci (Heavy Metal, Urban) as well as colorists Jason Wordie (Break Out, The Butcher of Paris), Giulia Brusco (Maskerade, Scalped), Fabiana Mascolo (Shifting Earth, Yasmeen), and letterer Frank Cvetkovic (Count Crowley, Transplants). Including cover art by artist Mattia De Iulis, this omnibus is worthy of any Cyberpunk 2077 collection.

Dark Horse Comics press release

Cyberpunk 2077 Omnibus Volume 1 is set to arrive in bookstores on October 15th, 2024, with comic shops getting it the very next day. Priced in at $29.99 USD, pre-orders are open right now.

Yes, Godzilla as in Godzilla. The famed movie monster had a Marvel run of his own in the 70s, and now those books are getting collected.

*Godzilla roar*

The year was 1977, and one of the biggest comic book publishers in the world was about to bring one of the biggest movie monsters in the world to the printed page. From the creative team of Doug Moench and Herb Trimpe, Godzilla was just one of the movie series’ that Marvel adapted back in the era, but unlike with titles like Star Wars, it didn’t last all that long.

While the run was only two years, Godzilla was mighty eventful, and actually crossed over into the Marvel U proper. Yes, the big guy tussled with the likes of The Avengers, Spider-Man, and even Devil Dinosaur. If you’ve never read those classics, then you might be interested in what Marvel and Toho are set to bring to stores in about a year’s time.

Cover by Junggeun Yoon

As you can see above, that’ll be Godzilla: The Original Marvel Years. An omnibus that will be packed with all 24 issues of the original series, the mighty tome will offer each story “gloriously remastered and presented in color for the first time”.

Godzilla rises from the depths in the United States — and the Marvel Universe! See the towering scourge of Tokyo march across America and battle some of the best and brightest the House of Ideas had to offer, including the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, the Champions, Nick Fury and the mechanized monster fighter, Red Ronin! Godzilla goes west, travels through time to battle Devil Dinosaur, and hosts one of Spider-Man’s most gratuitous guest-shots ever — but when Godzilla is shrunk down to miniature size, the terrible titan proves it can still be a tiny terror! Plus: Aliens, mutants, mad scientists and epic kaiju clashes with Godzilla’s fellow towering titans — including Batragon and Yetrigar!

Marvel Comics press release

Featuring a standard cover from Junggeun Yoon, Godzilla: The Marvel Years will feature not one, but two variants from its original artist, Trimpe. Those will be a “Direct Market Exclusive First Issue Variant Cover” and a “Direct Market Exclusive War of the Giants Variant Cover”. All three will arrive in stores next October, just in time for a little monster mash.

Set to tie into the the upcoming Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora game, Dark Horse’s new comic book mini-series will kick off 2024.

Avatar returns

An action game that sends players into the familiar world of Jim Cameron’s sci-fi universe, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is set to launch for consoles and PC this December. But it won’t be the only new piece of fiction that brings the strange, alien world back to fans this year.

Dark Horse Comics will be delivering a new comic book mini-series, and it will tie directly into this year’s game. The comic will star the talents of Ray Fawkes, Gabriel Guzmán, Michael Atiyeh, and Michael Heisler, and feature what should be some terrific cover illustrations from painter and muralist Aniekan Udofia on issues 1-3. After that, fans can look for the team of Gabriel Guzmán and Michael Atiyeh to take over for the covers on numbers 4-6.

The whole thing begins in February.

The next evolution of James Cameron’s immersive universe takes shape in Ubisoft’s Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, where players will experience an open-world action-adventure as a member of the Na’vi fighting against the RDA for the sovereignty of their homeworld. This six-issue miniseries tie-in introduces readers to new characters and clans and provides the origin story of one of the critical characters in Ubisoft’s new game.

Meet So’lek—a Na’vi warrior who must go on a transformative journey across Pandora. While the battle of the Hallelujah Mountains is over, the trauma of war is never-ending. Alone, desperate, and grief-stricken, So’lek must look to Eywa and find a path towards healing. Though danger, doubt, and pain await him, he must answer the call.

Dark Horse Comics press release

As mentioned, look for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora to kick off in early 2024, with issue #1 (of 6) on February 28th, 2024. As for the same-name game that it’s based on, that will arrive just a tad earlier for the PC and consoles, on December 7th, 2023.

Comics are about to get a little law and order, thanks to Mad Cave Studios’ brand new Dick Tracy ongoing series.

Where’s our two-way wristwatch

“Calling all DICK TRACY fans – with over 90 years of storytelling across various mediums, everyone has ‘their’ version of Chester Gould’s yellow-jacketed detective,” said Mad Cave Studios Senior Editor, Chas! Pangburn. “Mad Cave Studios is beyond honored to continue this legacy through a neo-noir reinvention of the character. We’ve partnered with all-star creators to deliver new tales of corruption, thievery, and murder.”

Mad Cave Studios press release

It’s tough to imagine that Dick Tracy has been around, as a character, for almost a century. Yet here we are, with not only 90 years in the bag for the heroic detective, but a new comic book on the horizon. As you can see, that’s coming from Mad Cave Studios, and from the sound of things, getting this deal done was no mean feat.

The publisher will be teaming with license-holder Tribune Content Agency for the new book, but that’s not all. Also in the mix are comics rights-holders Alex Segura, Michael Moreci, and Chantelle Aimée Osman, which should give you a good idea of just how much went into getting this title into production.

And while there isn’t a ton of detail on what to expect just yet, what was included in the press release kind of sounds like the comic will be a modern return not just for Tracy, but for the iconic ‘crime-comic’. That’s been a long time coming, as the genre hasn’t been represented much for… decades? So yeah, there’s some cause for excitement from a few different angles.

Stay tuned, there’s plenty more to come on Dick Tracy, as we head towards the first issue’s launch in March of 2024. Make sure you scroll down and check out some commentary from the parties involved while you’re here too, as there are some little bits of info sprinkled throughout.

Quotes from the team:

“Alex, Chantelle, and I have been pursuing DICK TRACY for many years, so to say this is a passion project, even that’s an understatement,” said Michael Moreci. “We love this character, we love this world. And we’re approaching it with great care—we don’t want to make a new DICK TRACY; we just want to make a DICK TRACY that feels rich and layered, that feels suited to our times. We can’t wait to share, with our great partners at Mad Cave, what we have in store.”

“This has been a long time coming, and we are all so excited to bring our grounded, noir take on the DICK TRACY mythos to life at Mad Cave,” said Alex Segura. “Michael and I have loved DICK TRACY, his stellar rogues gallery, and unforgettable supporting cast since we first became aware of the character as kids. It’s been a winding road to not only get the rights to publish new stories starring the iconic detective, and I’m so thankful that my journey with Chantelle and Michael brought us to Mad Cave. The stuff Geraldo is cooking up perfectly evokes the grounded, cinematic vibe we’re bringing to this origin story.”

“Mad Cave Studios is pleased to partner with Alex, Michael, Chantelle, and Tribune as part of our continued growth in the licensing arena,” said Mark Irwin, Mad Cave Senior Vice President. “DICK TRACY brings a wealth of colorful characters and stories that greatly enhance Mad Cave’s already strong licensing output.”

“We’re proud to see DICK TRACY, an all-time classic of truth and justice, return to comic books through our partners at Mad Cave Studios,” said Wayne Lown, Vice President & General Manager at Tribune Content Agency. “We look forward to daring new detective cases for this cultural icon, guided by their exceptional team of top-notch creators.”

Metro City is exactly what it used to be

The place is Metro City, as it’s seen in Street Fighter 6. The star? That’d be Kimberly, one of the newest world warriors to be added to Capcom’s stable in this year’s smash hit fighting game. That’s the setup for Udon’s newly revealed Street Fighter comic book, a one-shot starring both the graffiti ninja herself and Final Fight (and Street Fighter) legend Guy.

Street Fighter comics’ vet Chris Sarracini will be writing the new story, with artist Panzer on board for the interiors. And of course, since this is Udon, you can expect to see a full slate of great-looking variant covers too.

DON Entertainment returns with an all-new one-shot comic story featuring the brand new World Warrior KIMBERLY, who recently made her debut in Street Fighter 6! In this special story, the American graffiti ninja Kimberly Jackson hits up the streets of Metro City to stand-up to the dark forces gathering there, and gets a little help from Guy and the Bushin-ryu ninja clan!

Udon press release

As you can see above, Tovio Rogers’ variants will be exclusive to Udon’s online store, while there’ll also be a blank cover for sketches and two other variants in addition to the standard. Pre-orders for all of them are open now, including for both of Rogers’, and you an grab any of the above here on Udon’s shop.

Again though, these are pre-orders, as Street Fighter Masters: Kimberly #1 won’t arrive until this December the 13th.

DC Comics’ Justice League dips back into video games with Cosmic Chaos, a cartoony game that sets players loose in Happy Harbor.

World’s greatest superheroes

Congratulations! You are now a proud member of the Justice League and it’s time for your first mission: to team up with your favorite DC heroes and defend the seaside town of Happy Harbor!

STORY:

When Snapper’s inauguration to become Mayor of Happy Harbor goes awry because of prankster Mister Mxyzptlk (I am so sorry but I’m unable to pronounce his name) our heroes-Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman must restore the peace of Happy Harbor. They will also soon realize that an even bigger problem is hiding away in the shadows.

GAMEPLAY:

DC’s Justice League: Cosmic Chaos is a hilarious adventure game with RPG elements—as you fight hordes of enemies you will gain experience and collect the in-game currency that is dropped by defeated enemies or found in the many treasure chests scattered throughout its cartoony world. The experience earned will level up your heroes effectively making them stronger, while the in-game currency can be used to upgrade and strengthen their many abilities. I found that fighting groups of enemies was not only fun but terrifying at the same time which caused my adrenaline to continue pumping long after I had turned off my Nintendo Switch for an evening.

As a side note: Want to choose the game difficulty? Well, rejoice fellow hero! You can choose your difficulty level as soon as you fire up the game, and you can change it freely if you change your mind. I picked story mode so that I wouldn’t be overwhelmed by tough battles while I was learning the ropes.

The main story is told within four chapters, however if you need to take a breather, you can embark on side missions which can get you some sweet rewards and meet other characters. By pressing the minus button on the Nintendo Switch you will enter the menu screen where you can then select the side mission tab. By pressing the Y button, you can set the mission that you want to track. This allows a Waypoint marker to appear on your map. During my playthrough, I didn’t do all the side missions but the ones that I completed were enjoyable and added more to the story and I saw scenes that I wouldn’t have seen otherwise.

DC’s Justice League: Cosmic Chaos has a very big world to explore, and to make it easier to find your way around, a green waypoint/hotspot marker will appear on the map to guide you in the direction of where you need to head next. At first, I thought this setup would be straightforward, but as I played the game I ran into some trouble.

While the Waypoint marker is useful in some cases, it doesn’t always tell you EXACTLY where you need to go and sometimes it doesn’t even show up in some dungeons. I have two specific examples where this has happened.

➊ During the Back-to-School Bash mission I was directed to head to the school to progress the main story. What the green waypoint didn’t lead me to was the roof of the school, instead, it led me to the front door of the school which was locked! I had to search around just to find the roof. I knew I was on the right track once the heroes made a comment about finding an alternate entryway.

➋ When you have to rescue The Flash, for example, I got stuck in what seemed to be an endless maze, and nothing was marked on my map. I felt annoyed with this dungeon and if it wasn’t for a video walkthrough, I would have been stuck at this part of the game forever. So, here’s the short version: there will be times when locations are marked perfectly on the map, but sometimes you just get the general location—leaving you with the responsibility of searching the area. I wish this feature was consistent with how it works. This unfortunately applies to side missions as well as there were some, I left unfinished because of this.

Want to know something funny?  At first thought, I had to complete some side missions to progress because I got stuck in the game because of the faults of the waypoint/hotspot marker— but the side missions are completely optional.

You only get to play as Wonder Woman, Batman, and Superman and you can freely switch between them by pressing either the up or down button on the D-pad. Both buttons serve as this function so don’t worry if you feel more comfortable switching characters by pressing only the down or up button!

Each of the three heroes has their own special attacks, traversing abilities and so much more. I mostly used the awesome Dark Knight during my playthrough and discovered that I enjoyed using his traversing ability more than the rest of the other heroes. With just a magical touch of the ZL button, Batman can fly, and glide across the world map—how cool is that?!

You also have the option to summon support DC heroes to aid you in battles! At one point during my playthrough, I was swarmed by enemies that I was overwhelmed by status effects, and it made it hard for my hero to defend himself so with the push of the right directional button I summoned Cyborg into battle, and it worked like a charm to reduce the number of enemies in a pinch. Support DC heroes are unlocked as the story progresses.

GRAPHICS:

Upon starting DC’s Justice League: Cosmic Chaos I was blown away by the animated cutscenes. The graphics made me feel like I was watching a classic Saturday morning cartoon. However, when I first saw the actual in-game graphics I felt oddly disappointed, especially during the early hours of gameplay.

The in-game graphics look crisp and polished (especially during the cutscenes) and after viewing some comparison videos, I feel like they look a lot better on other consoles as well. But I must add that, as I played the game for a little longer, I did come to find that the Switch’s in-game graphics started to grow on me a little — to the point where I found them charming.

SOUND:

This is where things got a little weird. When I started the Back-to-School Bash mission I noticed that the sound became choppy, full of static, and crackly. It even affected some of the voiceovers as characters will randomly talk to each other while exploring, standing still, or battling enemies.

When I closed the game and reopened it on my Nintendo Switch the choppy static sound was fixed, and in hindsight, I’m wondering if it was a result of too many things happening at once on the screen? I honestly got so nervous when this happened that I nearly talked myself out of what I was hearing, even though I knew from the very depths of my intuition that I was hearing an audio issue occur.

On a more positive note, I love that the loading screen features “Mayor” Myx and he cracks some really funny jokes; it’s the first time I ever saw a loading screen in a game that features a fully-voiced character. I enjoyed that the voice acting not only brought the story to life in both the campaign and side missions, but to a town that’s chock-full of NPCs too!

REPLAY VALUE:

DC’s Justice League: Cosmic Chaos is a short game, so it won’t take you long to beat, but it’s filled to the brim with side missions and other goodies. For example, you can collect Booster Gold’s missing comic books, and by turning them in you can earn various costumes for your Justice League heroes!

After the credits rolled, I was returned to the front of Mount Justice (the home base), and from there I could complete any side mission I wanted. So even if you don’t want to complete them during the main story, it looks like you can do side missions after the main story ends!

FINAL THOUGHTS:

DC’s Justice League: Cosmic Chaos is a fun game and is quick to pick up and play. I’m not sure if I will revisit this game in the future, but it is a good game for what it offers especially if you are a huge fan of superheroes.

Even the Alien license can’t escape the modern trend of the “#1”, as Marvel will start a new run of the book this fall.

A new horror rises

Have you been reading Marvel Comics’ take on the venerable Alien license? The horror property arrived at the publisher alongside Predator a few years ago, as part of the fallout over parent company Disney buying 20th Century Fox. At this point, it’s fairly deep into building out its universe.

The current series, from writer Declan Shalvey and artist Andrea Broccardo, has been voyaging into some new territory too, in creating a new strain of xenomorphs. Called “Thaw”, the arc will be coming to a close with next month’s Alien #5, though that’s far from all fans will be seeing of it.

That’s because November Alien #1 will pick right up from it, while at the same time starting something new. It’s also set to be told across two different time periods, which should create an interesting dynamic, and will continue to “develop the new subspecies of Xenomorphs that Shalvey and Broccardo have introduced while laying the groundwork for an even greater threat”.

EVERYONE WILL HEAR YOU SCREAM! The next great Alien story starts in ALIEN ANNUAL #1 and continues in the all-new ALIEN #1! In deep space spins a world infected by the universe’s greatest killers. Most people – sane people – would construct a barrier thicker than the hulls of ten Nostromos and leave it to rot. But where most people see a death trap, Weyland-Yutani sees the biggest payout in the history of civilization. And if it costs a few human lives to secure? Those come cheap here. Prepare for more corporate corruption, personal betrayals and extraordinary violence!

Marvel Comics press release

Alien #1 will be out and in stores on November 15th. And if you haven’t been reading the series that just wrapped, and you’re worried about being lost, don’t sweat it.

There’s no specific date reported yet, but Thaw will be back in stores right alongside the new first issue, in the form of a collected edition.
