The TCF cricket tournament is back, and this time with a highly unique concept: an arena where kids aged 10 to 17 years old and their moms compete side-by-side on the field for the ultimate Champions Trophy!

The Untold Story! 

Up until now, you have surely heard the great tales of Indian cricketers, Harmanpreet, Jemimah, Dhoni, Virat, Rohit and young Suryavanshi, but the real tactical masterminds have officially arrived in Tung Chung!

Following the grand success of our previous family cricket editions, the TCF “Mom & Me” Tournament took community sports to a whole new level. This wasn’t just a cricket tournament; it was a heavy dose of entertainment and an epic saga straight out of a modern-day Mahabharata, and a spectacular exhibition of tactical genius.

What made this edition truly extraordinary? The entire destiny of the franchise rested squarely on the shoulders of our young captains, teenagers aged between just 13 and 17 years old. They proved that age is just a number when it comes to strategic leadership!

Mahabharata on the Pitch: The Teen Captains’ Leadership Styles

Our young yodhas (commanders) didn’t just step onto the field to play; they channeled the legendary warriors of Kurukshetra. Facing unique challenges, like the mandatory rule forcing pro players to open both batting and bowling, these young leaders had to deploy masterclass strategies.

The Yudhisthira Composure (Kushagra – Royal Challengers Tung Chung):

Leading the Royal Challengers Tung Chung (RCTC), Kushagra displayed the calm, righteous poise of Yudhisthira. His tactical field placements kept his team flawlessly organized, cruising through the round-robin stages completely undefeated! RCTC looked like a masterfully constructed Chakravyuh entering the grand finale. Team Members: Kushagra, Vihaan, Purvi, Vihaana and Saisha.

The Arjuna Focus (Aashi & Arham – Tung Chung Champions):

Heading into the tournament as the ultimate underdogs, the duo of Aashi and Arham at the helm of Tung Chung Champions (TCC) showcased the laser-sharp focus of Arjuna aiming at the bird’s eye. Refusing to back down from early setbacks, they unleashed a storm of tactical brilliance, much like Arjuna unleashing arrows from his mighty Gandiva bow, and fiercely engineered a monumental comeback to lift the crown! Team Members: Aashi, Arham, Vaanea, Sneha ji (Mom) and Parineeti (Impact player).

The Bhima Might (Aayush – Tung Chung Titans):

Leading the Tung Chung Titans (TCT), Aayush channeled the colossal strength and relentless spirit of Bhima. Much like Bhima wielding his massive Gada (mace) to shatter enemy obstacles, Aayush relied on sheer, aggressive front-foot tactics to dismantle the opposition. He inspired his squad to smash boundaries with unrelenting force, countering every heavy delivery with the raw, unstoppable momentum of a true warrior on the battlefield. Team Members: Aayush, Nischal, Kairvi and Vibha ji (Mom).

The Krishna Wisdom & Love (Niyati & Dhruvil – Tung Chung Power Hitters):

The teen duo leading the Tung Chung Power Hitters (TCPH) chose to lead with the ultimate love, affection, and sheer passion of Bhagwan Krishna guiding his chariot. They gave their absolute best efforts, steering their team with divine diplomacy and ensuring they meticulously followed every rule of the tournament, acting as the ultimate guardians of the rulebook, seamlessly “dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s” just like Shri Krishna maintaining the cosmic balance. By playing the game with absolute righteousness and a big smile, they easily won the hearts of everyone on and off the field. Team Members: Niyati, Dhruvil, Arnav, Parineeti and Aruna ji (Mom).

“Picture Abhi Baaki Hai Mere Dost!” – Tactical Masterstrokes

The 13-to-17-year-old captains treated the pitch like a cinematic movie set. While their family members were busy dancing to the vibrant Bollywood tracks echoing in the background, the captains had to stay laser-focused on tactics.

Since pro players were restricted from bowling fast to younger kids and moms, the tactical middle-overs became an intense strategic battleground. Captains were seen huddling in their team groups, rearranging fields, and whispering top-secret plans. Whenever the pace dropped, batsmen engineered clever ways to rotate the strike, sacrifice single runs, or unleash massive boundary hits.

Bhagwan Indra’s Rain vs. The Organising Committee’s Will

Just as the tournament gained momentum, a sudden, uninvited rainstorm broke out, threatening a total washout and disrupting our entire timeline.

Showing incredible character under pressure, the TCF Organising Committee, comprising Nitin, Vivek Jain and Kashish, sprang into action. Refusing to let the day end in disappointment, they made swift, last-minute rule amendments to beat the ticking clock. Thanks to their masterful coordination, the committee pulled off the impossible: completing the entire tournament flawlessly right within the agreed timeframe. It taught our young leaders a grand life lesson: when life throws an unexpected bouncer, you don’t walk off. You adapt, adjust your stance, and face it!

The Coronation: Awards and Superstars

The grand finale was pure cinematic gold. The underdog Tung Chung Champions (TCC) played like absolute titans, setting a monumental, historic tournament record of 48 runs in 5 overs! RCTC put up a heroic, heart-stopping chase but missed the crown by just a few runs.

While every single player displayed unmatched spirit, including the infectious, amazing energy of Arnav and Kairvi,  the relentless motivation of Aruna ji,  and Nischal poured his absolute heart out to support his team.

A special mention goes to Manish Bhai for diligently ensuring every run was recorded and every ball accurately accounted for in the scorecard.

Champion Team: Tung Chung Champions (TCC) – Led by Aashi & Arham, fueled by the unwavering spirit and fierce dedication of Sneha ji, Vaanea, and Parineeti who fought until the very last ball!

Player of the Tournament: Arham – A true yodha of the tournament, awarded for his breathtaking, clutch knockout performance under pressure that completely turned the tide of the game.

Finals Player of the Match (PotM): Aashi – For displaying the unyielding focus of Arjuna, leading her team from the front with relentless effort, and standing tall and not out to guide her squad to victory in the grand finale!

MVP Mom Player: Vibha ji – For anchoring her team beautifully and putting on a stellar all-round performance.

MVP New Player (First Time Player – FTP): Vihaana – Stepping onto the pitch for the very first time, she rose to the occasion like a true natural, revealing her incredible hidden strength and leaving a massive impact on the field!

Top Performing Male Players: Aayush & Kushagra – True yodhas who led their team with absolute tactical brilliance, and executed their leadership roles to perfection.

Maharashtra Day, observed on May 1 every year, marks the formation of the state of Maharashtra in 1960 after the long and determined Samyukta Maharashtra movement. It is a day that honours the Marathi language, the cultural identity of the people, and the legacy of great leaders who shaped the region’s social and political fabric.

This year, the celebration in Hong Kong carried special significance as the Indian Consulate hosted the event for the first time, symbolising recognition of the vibrant and growing Maharashtrian community in the region. On April 30, 2026, what unfolded was not just a cultural program—it was a heartfelt tribute to the pride, heritage, and unbreakable spirit of Maharashtra, brought alive thousands of miles away from the Sahyadri ranges.

It was also a celebration of Maharashtra’s contribution to India—its forts, its saints, its warriors, its artists, its industrial strength, and its global-minded citizens.

A Warm Welcome and a Sweet Surprise

The evening began with a warm welcome to the Consul General and all distinguished guests. The first surprise of the evening came early: Consul General Shri Rajesh Naik addressed the audience in Marathi. This gesture instantly won hearts and set an emotional tone for the celebration. His words reflected warmth, respect, and a deep connection with the community, making the moment truly memorable.

The atmosphere was filled with pride as the host, Dr. Manoj Kulkarni, President of Maharashtra Mandal, Hong Kong highlighted the three pillars of the Maharashtrian community in Hong Kong—Maharashtra Mandal Hong Kong, Garje Marathi, and Antarrashtriya Marathi Manch—each contributing uniquely to cultural preservation, professional excellence, and linguistic pride.

Shivkalyan Raja – A Divine Beginning

The program opened with “Shivkalyan Raja,” a powerful ode to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Penned by Saint Ramdas and composed by Hridaynath Mangeshkar, the piece reminded the audience of timeless leadership values. Mugdha Ratnaparkhi’s soulful presentation set a reverent and inspiring tone.

State Anthem – Jai Jai Maharashtra Majha

Gondhal and Jogva are folk traditions that are emotional and devotional, portraying the deep faith and lived experiences of devotees. Paresh Nyati and Jaee Joshi brought the audience into the world of Maharashtra’s folk heritage.

MMHK Secretary Amit Wakde shared a beautifully curated video prepared by MTDC, which transported the audience across the state — from Mumbai’s bustling streets to the serene Western Ghats, from coastal Konkan to the cultural heartlands of Pune and Nashik.

Quiz Time – Testing Maharashtra Knowledge

Shilpa Pednekar and Rupali Kambli engaged the audience with a lively quiz, adding fun and friendly competition. Prizes awaited the winners, keeping the hall buzzing with excitement.

Economic Powerhouse – Magnetic Maharashtra

MMHK Secretary Amit Wakde shared another special video, supported by MIDC CEO Dr. P. Velarusu IAS and MEDC Vice President Mr. Sachin Itkar. The presentation showcased Maharashtra’s industrial strength, infrastructure, and economic leadership, highlighting why the state continues to be India’s growth engine.

Lezim – A Grand Finale of Energy

The program concluded with a vibrant Lezim performance by Rupesh V Kambli, Paresh Nyati, Jaee Joshi, and Siddhi Joshi. The rhythmic jingling of Lezim instruments, synchronised formations, and high-energy footwork filled the hall with festive spirit.

Adding to the atmosphere, Rupali Kambli created immersive backdrops for all performances, lending the stage a cinematic aura and ensuring the performances were not only heard and felt but also vividly seen.

Artefacts and Artistic Displays

Guests explored a curated display of artefacts — GaneshJi and Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s idols, Maharashtraian jewellery, Paithani saree, Solapuri chaddar, Kolhapuri chappals, and the iconic Dabbawala topi — each reflecting Maharashtra’s identity and timeless traditions.

Complementing these treasures were artworks by talented artists including Rupesh V Kambli, Shanti Satyan, and Sharmila Raikar, each showcasing the pride of Maharashtra through diverse artistic expressions. Together, the artefacts and artworks offered guests a visual and emotional journey into the soul of Maharashtra.

Honouring Guests and Community Spirit

The Consul General graciously joined the stage for prize distribution.
A special token of appreciation—Alphonso mangoes from Konkan—was presented by MMHK President Dr. Manoj Kulkarni, symbolizing the sweetness of Maharashtra’s hospitality.

A Heartfelt Vote of Thanks

The evening closed with gratitude expressed to the Consulate, the organising team, performers, and guests, delivered gracefully by MMHK Treasurer Sheetal Oak.

And of course, no Indian celebration is complete without food. Guests at the consulate office enjoyed, for the first time, a delicious Maharashtrian spread featuring Mumbai’s vada pav, sabudana khichdi, and dudhi halwa, along with Pune’s bakarwadi and amba burfi. The menu also included a special drink of raw mango (panha) and masala chai—an ideal culinary finale arranged by Sharmila Kulkarni and Shilpa Pednekar.

A Celebration to Remember

The first-ever Maharashtra Day celebration at the Consulate was more than an event—it was a moment of pride, unity, and cultural connection. It showcased how traditions can thrive even far from home, carried by a community that cherishes its roots while embracing the world.

This celebration has set a beautiful precedent, promising many more years of cultural vibrancy and Maharashtrian pride in Hong Kong.

He didn’t just survive it; he conquered it, rewriting history by running the entire length of Sri Lanka (566 kilometers) in a staggering 6 days, 13 hours, and 22 minutes to set a brand-new Record. Covering 566 kilometers in just over six days requires a specific kind of madness—or a beautifully pure perspective on life. With his mind and heart set at the right place, Rahul has carved an extraordinary narrative of grit, legacy, and a deeply moving mission to push human limits for a remarkable cause.

This incredible feat, thankfully for us curious and amazed spectators – has been documented and ready to be premiered in the form of a striking, moving and inspiring film, Born to Fly. Adesiflava had the privilege to go one-on-one and deeply personal with Rahul, alongside his director Ali and his PR Ben, for an intimate, raw look at the making of Born to Fly. Ahead of its highly anticipated homecoming premiere at Premiere Elements on June 6th, the crew pulled back the curtain on how three self-described “crazy university students” managed to coordinate, document, and conquer a world-class athletic milestone with zero prior experience.

It’s a wildly inspiring underdog tale of three passionate individuals who dared to “dream like a kid” and pulled off the impossible. Let’s explore this heroic tale together, as we delve into the answers of the crew to the thoughtfully curated question set from the Adesiflava team, capturing the team’s triumphs, challenges and behind-the-scenes journey through this courageous feat. Lets’ dive straight into the interviews.

First up, we heard from the man himself, on how he accomplished this extraordinary feat-

Adesiflava: Rahul, you were a standout U-19 cricketer for Hong Kong before diving into ultra-running and sports physiology. What was the exact moment you looked at a map of Sri Lanka and thought, ‘I’m going to run the entire length of this country’?”

 “I made a kind of deal with myself that the reason I’m doing this is to be someone who can say I’m the best in the world if this is what I do”

Rahul : “For me, I’ve always wanted to be the best at a certain sport. I started off with my father’s dream of me becoming a cricketer. After two knee injuries, I wasn’t able to bring that to life… which led me to spend time searching for what brings me fulfillment. Through rehab, I started running more and before I knew it,I did my first marathon at the start of 2025.I saw someone online run across Australia and reached out to my coach. I said, ‘I ran my first marathon in January 2025. Let’s find a country at the end of the year where, within one year, I set a world record.’ We landed in Sri Lanka. Everything from the distance to managing the logistics… it just seemed like a country where we can make everything come to life.”

Adesiflava: Averaging nearly 100 kilometers a day in 30°C+ coastal humidity is brutal. Can you take us to your lowest physical or mental point during those 6 days? When your body was screaming to stop, what pushed you through the next mile?

Rahul: The two striking points were Day 2 and the penultimate day.

On Day 2, the heat had gotten quite heavy—more than 35°C. It was jarring mind-numbing heat – I actually can’t even recall the majority of the day.

On the penultimate day, I experienced the most physical pain that I have ever in my life in my Achilles tendon. I had to walk close to 60 km through the heat that day. What helped me was a deal I made with myself before the run: to find out if I am as good as I say I am. For me, that comes with navigating through pain like that. I really believe the best athletes in the world or people with that elite mindset, wait for moments like that to then shine. With one day to go, there was nothing that was going to stop me.

Adesiflava: This monumental effort was dedicated to the Children’s Cancer Institute. How did keeping those brave kids in mind change the texture of your pain?

“I can complain about all the Achilles pain I’m feeling on Day 5, but it still doesn’t come close to what a parent or let alone a child might be feeling with the uncertainty of whether they’re going to live tomorrow or not.”

Rahul: Having a cause bigger than myself attached to it helped when things got difficult or tedious. What I experienced can’t even scratch the surface of what a mom who’s just had a kid is finding out that her son or daughter has leukemia. Imagine the pain they must be feeling, right? Keeping that at the back of your mind keeps you a bit more leveled. It’s a good check.”

Adesiflava: You were born and raised right here in Hong Kong. How does it feel to bring this world-record story back home?

Rahul : I am so pumped to be back in Hong Kong to share it with all my family, friends, and well-wishers! It’s almost like a dream come true. We’ve already premiered this in Melbourne, and have received overwhelming positive reviews from people and my crop of friends.  And now to bring it back to the people that really helped us raise a lot of money, but also sent so many prayers… I can finally show them that this is where all the hard work went into and I can’t wait!

Adesiflava: One special message for the audience?

We’re so grateful for all the consideration this has got. To the people interacting and coming to watch, I urge them to take away one thing, it is our motto: Dream like a kid. It doesn’t matter if you’re 99 or if they’re 2 years old, I want them to take that message home and maybe do some crazy stuff they never thought they could do. And to always try and be the best in the world while being at it.

“I want to send a message to try something new and try something different and bring their family and friends along with themselves on their journey and and do it together because it’s way more fun that way”

Behind the Lens: Directing a World Record Remotely

This wasn’t a corporate, slickly produced Hollywood venture. It was an organic, chaotic, brilliant effort by a tight-knit crew directed by Ali.

Adesiflava: Ali, documenting an ultra-marathon is a logistical jigsaw puzzle. What were the nightmares of keeping up with Rahul, and how did you capture that raw, unscripted drama?

Ali (Director/Editor/Writer): “The logistical nightmare was that I couldn’t go to Sri Lanka myself, which you’ll hear all about in the documentary. That made it difficult because we had to find videographers and communicate with them through WhatsApp calling and texting while they were busy navigating a world record attempt. It was a massive challenge.

In terms of capturing the raw drama— literally nothing was really scripted. Everything you see was real challenges we were going through at the time. Personally, I don’t have an interest in running! But I think that was important. Someone who doesn’t know much about running making this documentary makes it more relatable to the general public and non-athletes. It makes it easier to connect to the story.”

Adesiflava: Is there any standout, unseen footage with the local community that will captivate the big-screen audience?

“You’ll see some of the footage inside of the documentary where you can really feel the support from the locals, and yes, it was absolutely heartwarming.”

Ali: The way the Sri Lankan community connected with us was amazing. There is a moment caught on camera where a local veteran came up to Rahul waving the Indian flag, showing immense support for him in a foreign country. I think that gave Rahul the little push exactly when he needed it!

Tremendous efforts and unbridled concentration – Ali’s dedication to make this an authentic visual narration of Rahul and team’s strenuous work, is commendable.

The PR Team: An Authentically Wild “Underdog Tale”

The man behind the PR for the film, Ali also shared some personal insights and challenges into what went behind making this sincere, raw, tale of motivation and bold mission. He emphasized just how unique the origins of this project truly were, making the final cinematic cut even more impressive.

Adesiflava: Ben, what were the  obstacles or logistical hurdles that the team oversaw as this came to life?

Ben: “This wasn’t a professionally organized, PR-led world record attempt,” Ben tells us. As the lead logistics operator, I was learning everything from scratch from how to reach out to sponsors to how to work best with Rahul’s coach and learning that on the go whilst trying to organize the event presented a challenge in and of itself.

“This was the dream of, at the time, three university students: one who was crazy enough to run the length of a country, one who was crazy enough to organize the whole thing, and one crazy enough to document it”

With no prior knowledge or experience, we learnt everything on the go while balancing university and social lives. It’s a true underdog tale for those who are potentially fearful of dreaming big.

Adesiflava: The VIP Experience: “With red carpet photographs starting at 3:30 PM, what can attendees expect from the energy of the premiere, and how can people support the cause if they can’t make it to the venue?”

Ben:The energy at Premiere Elements on June 6th promises to be “nothing but top-tier, top energy.” It’s like a grand homecoming for Rahul. In Conversation with OVO Events

Can you tell us a bit about the background of how the company was founded, the motivation and inspiration, and the gaps you were looking to fill?

“We laugh about it every now and then, but OVO Events was quite literally born in our bedroom.”Our casual brainstorming sessions helped us discover a deeply mutual, personal feeling shared by the three of us as siblings: the feeling that the South Asian community in Hong Kong deserved bigger, more meaningful entertainment experiences closer to home.

Growing up, we had music all around us. We actually come from a musical heritage and a family of legendary Indian classical musicians, so our association with the music industry, Bollywood live performances, and cultural celebrations has always been a massive part of our lives.

We realized there was a real disparity in the Hong Kong market. Audiences here were absolutely hungry for authentic, high-quality South Asian events, but opportunities were so limited. People often had to travel abroad just to see their favorite artists. We wanted to change that. Our very first event came from a simple idea—if we are craving these experiences, surely thousands of others are too. That became our foundation: creating unforgettable cultural moments that make people feel connected to home, nostalgia, and community, right here. At its heart, OVO was founded to bridge cultures and give fans the experiences they genuinely deserve.

Can you walk us through the dynamics of the team – passions, backgrounds, the connecting force, and if Bollywood thrives as loudly within the team as in its work?

“Being siblings means there is a natural, instinctive trust. That helps enormously when managing high-pressure events.” What connects us most is a shared passion for music, arts, and entertainment. Each of us brings completely different strengths to the table. Some of us are more creatively driven, some are operationally focused, and others thrive in networking and execution. That balance makes our teamwork strong.

And yes—we are massive Bollywood fans ourselves! We grew up listening to iconic music, all the way from legendary greats like Rafi Sahab and Kishore Da to modern icons like Sonu Nigam and Arijit Singh. We watched films together as a family, always admiring the way these artists emotionally connect with people through storytelling. That genuine love makes the work feel incredibly personal.

But beyond the mainstream, we’re also passionate about celebrating South Asian independent talent, from legends to rising stars. 

“We want to build a platform where you can experience both nostalgia and fresh talent under one roof. To us, entertainment is more than just a show—it’s about emotion and belonging.”

How has the reception to the last few events been — especially the Bollywood Night with Salman Zaman? What keeps the team going in these unpredictable times?

“The response to our Bollywood Night with Salman-Zaman was absolutely incredible. It reminded us exactly why we started this journey” Seeing the audience sing along, dance, and genuinely enjoy themselves was definitely a huge milestone for us. The energy in the room was electric, and it proved just how strong the demand is for quality desi entertainment in Hong Kong. We were so humbled by the support, not just from the South Asian community, but from people of all different backgrounds who came together to celebrate the music.

We genuinely believe Hong Kong has a growing appetite for South Asian entertainment. There’s a beautiful diversity in this city, and people are increasingly open to cultural experiences that feel vibrant, immersive, and emotionally engaging. The enthusiasm we’ve witnessed keeps us going and motivates us to keep pushing boundaries.

We received many questions on how the Javed Ali event came about. Any story behind how it was conceptualised?

Bringing Javed Ali to Hong Kong is a moment we’re incredibly proud of.

He is a legend whose voice has touched millions of people around the world, and for many fans, his songs are tied to some of their most emotional memories. 

People wanted something soulful, nostalgic, and musically rich performance-. Javed Ali immediately came to our minds because he represents exactly that.

Once the idea was born, a lot of hard work went into making it happen behind the scenes — coordinating internationally, aligning schedules, planning production, and ensuring we could deliver a concert experience worthy of both the artist and the fans.

For us, this isn’t just about hosting a concert. It is about creating a special moment for the community — giving fans in Hong Kong the rare opportunity to experience an artist of his calibre live, in an intimate and memorable setting.

Seeing the excitement around the announcement has already made all the effort worthwhile.

What are some future events we should look out for and the upcoming vision of OVO events? Are there any channels fans can submit their requests via?

We want to bring a mix of legendary artists, contemporary performers, live music experiences, themed nights, and culturally driven events to the city. Audiences can definitely expect a major expansion in the scale and variety of what we offer.

One thing that is deeply important to us is listening to the community. A lot of our inspiration comes directly from the audience and what they want to experience. We absolutely welcome requests and suggestions for future artists or event ideas through our social media platforms and community channels. We want OVO Events to grow with the audience. The long-term vision is simple: to build a trusted entertainment platform that consistently delivers world-class events in Hong Kong and beyond.

While we pride in Hong Kong being a world-class cosmopolitan hub, the veneer of “Asia’s World City” sometimes masks a harsher reality for ethnic minorities. Sometimes, the daily experience is not one of seamless integration, but a quiet, enduring struggle against a current of systemic bias and unprovoked hostility that continues to weigh heavily on the community’s spirit.

The Incident: A Mother’s Reflex vs. A Calculated Trap

What began as a routine afternoon for an Indian mother playing with her children in their own residential playground quickly spiraled into a nightmare. The mother was spending quality time with her children, enjoying the safety of their residential environment, when a local resident accosted them out of nowhere. Casting disparaging looks, he launched into a targeted, unprovoked verbal assault, hurling racial slurs and attacking the family’s Indian ethnicity.

The mother, naturally disturbed, pleaded for the man to cease his vitriol especially in front of her young children, he didn’t just persist—he escalated and responded with added bitterness. Upon her protesting, the man made a calculated move to agitate her further and began openly filming the mother and children whilst continuing an insulting backdrop.  Acting on a natural, protective reflex to safeguard her children’s privacy, the lady attempted to stop the recording. It was at this precise moment that the aggressor started flipping the narrative, and the lady’s husband present at the workplace had to call the police to deal with the escalation. The man framed himself as a victim and the actual victim was accused of harassment.

“It’s one thing to hear about systemic issues, but it’s another to see a mother’s protective instinct for her children weaponized against her by a serial offender.”

What followed? The Discovery of “Serial Offender” and the Burden of Proof

Subsequent investigation and community inquiries painted a chilling portrait of the individual involved and revealed a disturbing pattern. This was not an isolated outburst. The man is reportedly a serial offender, known within the society for his aggressive stance toward the Indian community and constantly displays directed compulsive antagonistic behaviour. He appears to deliberately target those he perceives as vulnerable—mothers with small children, the elderly, and domestic helpers—deriving a maladaptive gratification from provoking others until they react in frustration.

At the Police Station:

At the police station,the charges were in-turn pressed on the lady. The reportees observed a subtle but palpable bias; there was a sense that there was insufficient reception to the victim’s testimony and lack of keenness to dwell on their side of story –focusing instead on the technicality of the physical interaction rather than the preceding racial provocation.

Initially, an agreement was reached: the man would drop charges in exchange for an apology. However, as he became aware of more victims beginning to speak out and evidence of his past behavior surfacing, he became adamant on prosecuting – doubling down on his attempt to see a mother struggle for defending her children’s dignity. While the lady was granted bail thanks to an outpouring of community support, the charges remain—a chilling example of how an aggressor can use the law as a shield for their own hate.

Despite the prestigious nature of the Caribbean Coast society—which implies a level of mutual respect and high standing among its residents—the “system” has failed to provide a content clarity.

What People are Feeling:

This incident is particularly galling given the immense positive impact the Indian community has on Hong Kong. Far from being outsiders, they are a cornerstone of the city’s success and have successfully made HK a promising home for themselves, many holding directorial and managerial roles in global financial institutions. Beyond the boardroom, the community is defined by its deep-rooted altruism. From several charities to temples serving thousands of meals daily to those in need, to initiatives helping seniors find renewed purpose, the Indian community’s service has always been evident even during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Yet, despite this history of charity and hard work, sometimes the “silent” discrimination occurs: the lingering stares, verbal assaults, and biases in workplaces, daycare centers, and the rental market. These instances leave a lasting mental impact and a stigma that the community should not have to bear.

A Call to Action: Solidarity in the Face of Injustice

This event is merely one story that has surfaced to DesiFlava. This incident is a micro-reflection of a macro-problem. Though HK has given a lot of beautiful memories for people to linger, there remains another side. For every story like this that surfaces via DesiFlava, thousands more remain buried under the weight of fear, exhaustion, or the feeling that “nothing will change.” We must no longer suffer in silence. The Indian community is an integral contributor to Hong Kong’s advancement, and it is time our treatment reflects that contribution.

A Grand Cultural Gathering at India Club

The spirit of Punjab came alive in Hong Kong as a grand Vaisakhi Mela was celebrated at the India Club on 29th March 2026. Organized by Renu Singh and Sunil Singh of Sai Sajawat, along with Raju Mann Musical Group, the event brought together a vibrant mix of culture, music, and tradition.

With a gathering of around 150–200 attendees, including distinguished guests, district consulars, and members from diverse communities, the celebration truly reflected unity in diversity.

Musical Performances That Stole the Show

The evening was filled with electrifying musical performances by talented singers including Raju Mann, Kashmir Gill, and Bitta Sandhu.

Raju Mann not only invited renowned Punjabi singers from India but also mesmerized the audience by performing several lively Punjabi songs himself, creating an unforgettable musical experience.

Energetic Dance Performances

The event showcased vibrant dance performances organized by Pooja Loungani. Performers from Pooja’s Fitness & Dance Studio TST and the Punjabi Bhangra Group Hong Kong lit up the stage with energetic bhangra and cultural dances.

Adding to the charm, young children also participated, bringing joy and enthusiasm to the celebration.

A Captivating Host and Cultural Insight

The event was gracefully hosted by Neena Pushkarna, who did an exceptional job as the MC. She not only entertained the audience with Punjabi songs but also beautifully explained the significance of Vaisakhi to Chinese, Nepali, and other international guests.

Her efforts helped bridge cultural gaps and made the event more meaningful for everyone present.

In true Indian tradition, distinguished guests were warmly welcomed and honoured with shawls by the organisers and Neena ji. This gesture added a touch of authenticity and respect to the event, leaving a lasting impression on attendees.

The event is hosted in collaboration with the LKF group, and lovingly patronised by the very own Allan Zeman, chairman of the group and the man behind turning HK’s neighbourhood of flower stalls and traditional wet markets into a nightlife legend and a premier entertainment destination. Speaking at the press release, Allan expressed, “it gives us great pleasure to bring this event to the audiences again after last year’s tremendous success and I look forward to the festival with great anticipation, especially with the increased array of events, performances and artists we’re bringing to you this year”. He also recounted joyfully how the last event was a massive hit, drawing audiences from Mainland and other regions, with stalls brimming with visitors as they witnessed Indian food, whiskeys, dances, movies with curiosity, fascination,surprise and a pleasant admiration. Allan noted how he was compelled to shake a leg or two at the DJ night, courtesy the electric atmosphere -”Nobody wanted to leave, people were so happy”.

What to expect?
The festival promises to be an immersive experience, capturing the essence of India through a kaleidoscope of events. And, it’s bigger and better this year with added nuances like traditional Baraat procession (Indian tradition of the groom arriving at the wedding), saree try-ons, cooking classes, etc. With a lineup that includes interactive workshops, film screenings, and traditional performances, there’s something for everyone!

Mindful Start with Yoga: Start your morning by embracing tranquility with rejuvenating Yoga Sessions. Designed for all levels, these classes will guide participants through a variety of poses and meditation techniques, creating a sense of calm and wellness amid the bustling festival activities. Participants will not only benefit physically but also mentally, making it a perfect way to set a positive tone for the day ahead.

Henna: One of the festival’s key attractions will be Henna Workshops, where participants can learn the art of “mehndi” or Indian temporary tattoo. You’ll not only unleash your creativity and apply beautiful designs; you’ll embrace a cultural tradition that signifies joy and celebration. 

Captivating Cinema: India is known for its glowing and widely acclaimed film industries, and it’ll be a crime if such artistic cinema isn’t part of this celebration. For movie lovers, the festival will feature screenings of popular films with subtitles such as Dangal (cited as one of the finest films of Hindi film industry and rightfully earned its place in hearts of audiences worldwide)and Kantara (Second highest-grossing Kannada film of all time and a major global success) – the  films that not only entertain but also reflect the diversity of stories that Indian cinema has to offer. It’ll be an enriching experience, where you’ll get a chance to be explorative and dive deeper into the nuances of Indian culture. 

The ‘Baraat’: One of the most visually stunning segments of the festival will be a vibrant procession that mimics traditional Indian wedding arrival of the groom, filled with music and energetic dance. Expect to see joyful performers and dancers, creating an atmosphere of festive exuberance that’ll compel everyone to join in the merriment.

Fashion Extravaganza: For those with a flair for fashion, the Saree Try-Outs provide a unique opportunity to learn the art of draping a saree where you can embrace the elegance of this timeless attire. An intricate symbol of grace and cultural heritage, saree is not just any other garment, it’s representation of the divine power of a woman, and represents countless stories woven into its fabric and embroideries. 

A Culinary Journey: Lip-smacking, award-winning, aromatic, flavourful,…. and the list goes on. Indian food is synonymous to a pleasurable indulgence, and rules the taste buds of many, foreigners and indians alike. The festival aims to do justice to this significant part of our culture- by offering everything from the spicy notes of street food to the spectacular classics. The menu offers a culinary journey through India’s diverse regions. It’s a chance to savor authentic flavors that are sure to tantalize your taste buds. And who could forget the buzz around the Indian whiskey? Last year’s festival saw attendees queuing up for a taste that many claimed was worth the wait and almost had onlookers fooled for the whiskey to be free given the impressive crowds!

Dance performances: Dance is a focal point of Indian tapestry, and echoing that sentiment the festival will feature exhilarating performances that include Bollywood, Garba, and various classical dance forms. These performances will not just entertain; they will celebrate the diversity of dance styles and expression of emotions and stories through them – showcased by vibrant costumes and electrifying choreography that harmonize with the festival’s energetic ambiance.

DJ night: Later as the night unfolds, the energy will shift to the electrifying DJ Night, where attendees can let loose to a mix of fusion Bollywood hits and contemporary beats. This night promises to be an unforgettable celebration, drawing everyone to the dance floor for a joyful release of energy and a celebration of community.
