The attendees heard from a panel of incredibly knowledgeable speakers;

• Adastra alumni, athlete, skiydiver and all-round talented woman Kristie Baillie,
• Local music stalwart, musician, coach and mentor Michael Blake and,
• Adastra alumni, celebrated Track Cyclist, Olympian, Team New Zealand winning America’s Cup Sailor and Cyclor Simon Van Velthooven

Their diverse stories and experiences provided valuable knowledge for the upcoming recipients to help them in their journeys in life.

The workshops gave the attendees an opportunity to network with young athletes, musicians and singers from the region plus learn from leaders in the field of various personal development topics. The mentoring workshops help build good, robust people with a focus on connections, understanding personality and growing emotional IQ to ensure individuals have the best skills to contribute to their own success and to society as a whole.

Over the two days, recipients engage in practical sessions on Communication, Life Sorting, Mindfulness, Social Media, Sports Psychology, Nutrition and Yoga.

All of the session presenters are experts in their fields, working with high performers on a regular basis.

The opportunity to meet recipients from other sports and arts codes cements the connections and friendships gained through being involved with the workshops.

Those were the questions put to our recipients by David Galbraith during our  'think' mentoring session.

We were thrilled to have such an unique and skilled professional present to our 2018 recipients. David (DG) comes from a background of Clinical Psychology and has who worked with some of New Zealand’s most elite. His focus is on assisting both teams and individuals express themselves as truly as possible. Live Pure as DG says.

Oh, we also belted out some Kenny Rogers and laughed...a lot

Social Media and Sponsorship was the focus of the 'Snap' mentoring session held at Rocket Coffee (we may have had coffee too!) on Thursday September 20.

Nicky Felton from Play Creative reverse engineered the social media process. This helped recipients gain an insight on where to focus their time and energy, in order to get the best results from this Social Media thing.

We also questioned Anna Cleaver on how to approach sponsorship:

 

• What do potential sponsors look for when considering supporting young talent?

• Where do I start finding businesses, people who might be able to help?

• What makes someone want open my email or read past the first line?

We locked in the Breathing Guru - Craig Newlands - to host a practical Breathing Clinic with recipients on Tuesday July 10th.  And before you ask...yes, they got to lie down on the job!

"In the arts or any sport it is important to monitor breathing quality. A good rhythmical, mechanically efficient pattern can assist with endurance, technique and overall performance. Altered breathing pattern/ breathing pattern disorders can vary from poor diaphragmatic use, to hyperventilation syndrome and can potentially have a detrimental effect on performance and health.

Breathing well helps us relax, normalises body biochemistry, reduces muscle pain and allows the re-establishment of normal posture and movement."
