RunThrough Trails Ascona-Locarno
2025 marked a milestone year for RunThrough Trails as it expanded beyond the UK to host its first events across Europe. Having already established itself as a leading organiser of trail running events in the UK as an offshoot of the parent brand RunThrough, which delivers over 300 events annually for more than 400,000 participants, this move represented a major step in the brand’s global growth. Driven by a passion to create unforgettable experiences in some of Europe’s most iconic trail running destinations and to inspire people to RUN INSPIRED, RunThrough Trails successfully brought its renowned event expertise to the continent with outstanding results.
“From Girona to Morzine and across to Interlaken, our first European season has been a joy to deliver and a privilege to share with so many runners,” said James Tilley, RunThrough Trails Director. “Ascona-Locarno is the perfect finale. I am incredibly proud of our team, our partners, and our volunteers for making this year so special, and I cannot wait to see the season crowned off in Ticino.”
Starting at Largo Franco Zorzi in the heart of Locarno, RunThrough Trails Ascona-Locarno invites runners to choose from 24k, 42k, and a family-friendly 1.5k. The route begins in the city centre and sweeps through the iconic Piazza Grande before tracing the river toward the mountains. Lush, green trails with panoramic viewpoints along the way and a memorable climb to Pizzo Leone that tops out at over 1,600 metres. After conquering the climbs and the descents back toward town, participants return to a warm Swiss-Italian welcome and a vibrant atmosphere of cafés and restaurants along the lakeside.
Ascona-Locarno is the final European RunThrough Trails event in 2025 and marks the close of our first year of racing on the continent. Launching in Europe has brought thousands of runners together on new terrain and in new communities, and the response has been inspiring. This finale in Ticino brings the curtain down on a season that has blended natural beauty, thoughtful course design, and the hospitality of our host destinations.
Volunteer support remains central to a great race day. We are grateful to Swiss Volunteers for their help in recruiting and coordinating the dedicated team that makes the event possible. We also extend our thanks to Ascona-Locarno Tourism for their local support and partnership in showcasing this remarkable destination. Hampton Court Palace 10K October 2025
“Racing through the grounds of Hampton Court Palace was a special experience and it showed on every smiling face. We were proud to welcome runners of all levels to this iconic setting and were grateful to Voltarol, our volunteers, and the palace team for making it possible,” said Matt Wood, Co-founder of RunThrough.
As Official Pain Relief Partner, Voltarol supported runners with on-site sampling and the Voltarol Recovery Zone to aid optimal recovery post race. The dedicated area provided a comfortable space to cool down and focus on post-race recovery, complementing the finish-line experience.
The route showcased the best of Hampton Court Palace and its surrounding parkland, combining fast, flat sections with scenic riverside running. With a professionally marked and measured course, clear wayfinding, and chip timing, the event offered an enjoyable and accessible experience for both first-timers and club athletes. Spectators lined key points along The Barge Walk and within the palace grounds to cheer runners home, adding to a lively finish-line atmosphere. Every finisher received post-race goodies and free race photos, rounding off a day that celebrated movement, community, and a truly historic setting.
From a field of 2000 finishers, Ollie Garrod claimed the overall win in 32:46, while Saskia Geddes took the women’s title in 39:31.

]]>And to make it even more rewarding, everyone who volunteers at a RunThrough event this June will be entered into a draw to win a pair of Brooks running shoes. It’s a small way for us to say a big thank you.

RunThrough events bring together thousands of runners each week across the UK and our volunteer community is at the heart of every single one. When you volunteer, you become part of a dedicated team working behind the scenes to make race day a memorable experience for everyone involved.
Volunteering gives you front-row access to the energy, adrenaline, and atmosphere of race day. You’ll be right there among the cheers, music, and finish line celebrations, helping to create an environment that motivates every runner from first to last.
Your role as a volunteer helps keep runners on track, hydrated, and encouraged. Whether you’re at the start line, finish line, or somewhere in between, you are making a real impact on their journey. Your support truly matters.
Volunteering is a great way to meet like-minded individuals from fellow volunteers and staff to the runners themselves. The camaraderie is real, and it’s a fun, sociable way to spend your day with others who share your energy and enthusiasm.
As a thank you, we offer £65 worth of RunThrough race credits plus £10 RT Kit credit for each event you volunteer at. It’s a brilliant way to give back to the community while also earning your way into future races or treating yourself to new kit.

There’s a wide range of roles available, from handing out medals and cheering at key points, to helping runners at the water station or keeping things organised at the start line. Whatever your skills or experience, there’s a place for you on the team.
Volunteering helps build your confidence, communication, and teamwork skills. It’s hands-on experience that can add to your CV while also giving you a sense of achievement and purpose. Perfect for students and professionals.
One of the best parts of volunteering is seeing the determination and joy on runners’ faces as they reach their goals. You’ll witness personal triumphs, emotional finishes, and a whole lot of inspiration — it’s a truly uplifting experience.
Even a short shift can make a massive difference. Volunteering doesn’t require a huge time commitment, but the impact you’ll have and the fulfilment you’ll feel lasts long after race day is over.

We’re always welcoming new members into the volunteer family. If you have any questions or want to get involved, please reach out — we’d love to hear from you!
We welcome organised groups and are happy to give back. In return for your time, we offer a monetary donation to your club, charity, or organisation. It’s a meaningful way to support local causes while enjoying a fun and social experience. To register your group, please email us at volunteer@runthrough.co.uk
We’re always looking for enthusiastic and encouraging individuals to serve as Pacers or Finish Line Friends. These roles are vital to helping runners achieve their personal bests and feel supported in their journey.
As a pacer, you’ll be officially entered into the race and receive a race bib, chip timing and all the post-race goodies. This is our way of saying thank you for supporting the runners. You’ll also earn £40 in race entry credits to use towards any future RunThrough events, along with £10 in RT kit credits.

]]>In 2024, running clubs on Strava saw a remarkable 59% increase in membership, emphasizing how running is no longer a solo pursuit but a communal experience. Whether it’s joining a local running group, participating in virtual challenges, or connecting with a global community, runners are finding new ways to come together.
With over 300,000 participants at our events this year we’ve seen this exploding popularity firsthand. From the buzz at the start line to the new friends made over a post-run coffee, running is about much more than individual achievements. It’s about shared goals, mutual encouragement, and celebrating milestones together. Our mission has always been to create spaces where everyone feels they belong—whether you’re chasing a PB or simply enjoying the journey.
One of the most inspiring statistics from Strava’s report is the 89% increase in women joining running clubs compared to last year. This number tells a story of a shift toward greater inclusivity and empowerment in running.
At RunThrough events women make up a significant and growing portion of participants. Running events are becoming a space where women feel confident, supported, and celebrated. We know there’s more work to be done to ensure equity in sports, but these numbers remind us that the momentum is building and initiatives like Women’s Run Series are looking to further this growing interest.
On the 8th March 2025, the first events of the Women’s Run Series will take place at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park over the 5k and 10k distance. All abilities are welcome to ensure running is an activity everybody feels comfortable taking part in.
Running has long been associated with physical fitness, but Strava’s report shines a light on its mental health benefits too. With 58% of runners listing improved mental health as a primary goal for 2025—and an even higher 65% among Gen Z—it’s clear that people are turning to running as a way to navigate life’s stresses.
We frequently hear stories about how running changes lives beyond the physical – none more moving and inspirational than that of Mike Barnes. His desire to challenge himself to run in memory of his daughter is what events are really about for us here at RunThrough.
Whether decompressing after a tough day at work, rebuilding confidence or pushing your own personal limits, mental health is at the core of why many of us run. In 2025 we’ll continue to champion initiatives that bring people together, delight participants and make running accessible to all.
Maybe the most crucial data point of all… Gen Z runners prefer long or crew socks, while Gen X opts for no-show or ankle socks. (RunThrough Kit has both styles covered, just saying). It’s a finding that reminds us that running can be about self-expression as well as movement. At our events, we’ve seen runners rock every style imaginable, from neon tights to full pantomime horse outfits… It’s these joyful details that make the running community so diverse and fun.
The growth of running as a community-driven, inclusive, and mentally enriching activity is fantastic to see. At RunThrough, we’re proud to play a part in this movement, providing events that welcome runners of all backgrounds, paces, and goals. From beginners taking their first steps to seasoned athletes chasing new records, every runner has a place at our start lines.
]]>Your body is your best guide. Pay attention to what it’s telling you—whether it’s fatigue, discomfort, or the need for more recovery time. Adjusting your training plan to incorporate rest days or reducing mileage when needed is not a sign of weakness but of wisdom. It’s also crucial to maintain a balanced routine that includes strength training, mobility work, and proper nutrition to support your overall health and running performance.
Adapting to physical changes often means setting new goals. Instead of focusing solely on speed or distance, consider aiming for consistency, trying a new running style, or exploring different terrains like trails. Shifting your focus can reignite your passion and provide a fresh perspective on what running means to you.
If you’re unsure how to adapt your training, consulting with a professional can be transformative. Our official coaching partner, New Levels Coaching, specialises in creating tailored training plans that evolve with you. Their “by runners, for runners” ethos ensures you’re supported every step of the way, whether you’re aiming to rebuild after injury or transition to a new stage of running.
Adapting to physical changes is a testament to resilience and determination. Celebrate the small victories—whether it’s completing your first run after a break, maintaining consistency through challenging times, or embracing a new pace with pride. Running is a journey, not a destination, and each step forward is worth acknowledging.
At RunThrough, we’re here to support you no matter where you are on your running journey. Through our events, resources, and partnerships, we’re committed to helping you adapt, thrive, and continue discovering the joy of running.
