Crispus Attucks STEAM Ambassadors Program In the News!

A special thank you to the York Daily Record/Sunday News for highlighting our Crispus Attucks STEAM Ambassadors Program and the incredible work of our scholars.

YORK, PA — York County proudly celebrated the accomplishments, creativity, and growth of its 2026 Crispus Attucks Codorus STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) Ambassadors during the Community Showcase and Graduation held on Friday, July 17, 2026, at our Crispus Attucks York History & Culture Center.

The event marked the culmination of a six-week interactive summer learning experience centered on STEAM. Throughout the program, scholars participated in classroom instruction, hands-on activities, career exploration, field experiences, mentorship, and project-based learning designed to demonstrate how STEAM connects to their community and future career opportunities.

As the program team shared:

“This program empowered students to explore science, technology, engineering, art, and math through community-driven projects, mentorship, and creativity. We are so proud of the leaders they are becoming.”

Six Weeks of Learning, Exploration, and Community

Throughout the six-week program, scholars explored how the different STEAM disciplines connect with one another and how those disciplines can be applied to real-world issues affecting York.

The program gave scholars opportunities to meet community leaders, participate in workshops, travel to educational sites, and gain experiences that extended beyond the classroom.

Mrs. Angel Gibson, Lead Facilitator, emphasized that providing those experiences was at the heart of the program.

“It is about the experiences. Connecting with the community, being involved, being able to experience something that they probably would not have been able to experience otherwise without this program.”

Over the course of the summer, scholars explored local waterways and environmental science, visited the Pennsylvania American Water wastewater treatment plant, conducted water-quality activities, worked with robotics and technology, explored forensics, learned about steam-powered trains, participated in an escape room, and studied community art, marketing, branding, financial literacy, and STEAM-related careers.

Scholars Take Center Stage

The Community Showcase gave the STEAM Ambassadors an opportunity to become the teachers.

Scholars were divided into three groups, each developing a unique presentation focused on the Codorus Creek, York's watershed, environmental responsibility, and the role young people can play in strengthening their community.

Group 1: Building a Better York

Scholars: Mia Soto, Aymar Vazquez-Lopez, and Abigaille Alexis

Group 1 presented “Building a Better York,” focusing on the Codorus Creek Beautification Project and their vision for what the future of York could look like through continued investment in the community and its natural spaces.

The scholars discussed how the beautification project extends beyond simply cleaning the creek. Their presentation explored restoring the waterway, improving public access and recreational spaces, enhancing wildlife habitats, reducing pollution and litter, addressing stormwater and flooding concerns, and creating cleaner and more welcoming spaces for residents and visitors.

They also encouraged residents to participate in cleanups, properly dispose of trash, share information about the project, and recognize how small actions can contribute to long-term positive environmental change.

Group 2: Inside the Mind of the Codorus Creek

Scholars: Jaziely Vega, Alicia Richards, and Jahari Williams-Brown

Group 2 took guests “Inside the Mind of the Codorus Creek,” examining the creek's plants, wildlife, water quality, environmental history, and the effects people have had on the waterway. The scholars discussed how native plants help stabilize riverbanks, reduce sediment, support wildlife, and even provide clues about the health of the water.

Their presentation also addressed challenges facing the Codorus Creek, including industrial runoff, littering, dumping, habitat destruction, and other sources of pollution. Rather than only discussing the problems, the scholars focused on solutions such as volunteering, participating in creek cleanups, reducing pollution, and supporting continued beautification efforts.

Group 2 also made the presentation interactive by challenging audience members to discuss what they personally could do to make a difference, what the Codorus Creek could look like if everyone helped protect it, and what challenges the community may face while working to protect the waterway.

Group 3: Our STEAM Journey Through Our Watershed

Scholars: Angeolina Gonzalez, Siriyah Gibson, and Jordyn Wade

Group 3 presented “Our STEAM Journey Through Our Watershed,” using six tributaries of the Susquehanna River as a creative representation of their six-week STEAM journey.

The scholars explained that just as tributaries flow together to form a larger river, each week's experiences came together to build their understanding of STEAM, their watershed, and their community.

Their presentation walked guests through the different components of the summer experience, including science, technology, engineering, art, mathematics, and career exploration. They discussed learning where York's water comes from, touring water-treatment facilities, testing water quality, exploring robotics, studying pollution, working with macroinvertebrates, learning about public art, exploring marketing and branding, practicing financial literacy, and discovering career possibilities connected to STEAM.

The group concluded by discussing ways residents can help protect local watersheds, including picking up litter, reducing the use of harmful chemicals, keeping pollutants out of storm drains, participating in stream cleanups, and reporting environmental violations.

Their presentation captured one of the central lessons of the entire summer experience: everything is connected.

As Mrs. Gibson reflected after the student presentations, each group approached its project differently while demonstrating the research, creativity, and hard work the Ambassadors invested throughout the program.

In Their Own Words: Our STEAM Ambassadors

Some of the most powerful reflections came directly from the scholars themselves.

Jordyn Wade, Logos Academy, 11th Grade, reflected on how STEAM can make a difference beyond the classroom:

“I see STEAM as five different ways we can impact our local community and help the earth thrive.”

For Jaziely Vega, Tidings of Peace, 11th Grade, the program helped connect STEAM with future career possibilities:

“I now see that STEAM is not only something that can be used within the program but in real life careers too.”

Jahari Williams-Brown, William Penn Senior High School, 12th Grade, shared how the experience changed her understanding of STEAM:

“I see STEAM very differently now. I used to think STEAM was just about work and science, but it is very useful in life.”

For Siriyah Gibson, Dallastown Area Middle School, 7th Grade, the program expanded what STEAM meant altogether:

“I used to think that STEAM was only about science. Now I realize there is so much more to STEAM than just your typical science.”

And Abigaille Alexis, Tidings of Peace, 12th Grade, captured the spirit of the program in one powerful statement:

“STEAM taught me that small ideas can make a big impact.”

Her most memorable experience was a boat ride that allowed her to see the environment from a new perspective while learning about the importance of protecting local waterways. She said the experience helped her connect STEAM to real-world issues.

Building More Than STEAM Skills

The STEAM Ambassadors Program was about more than experiments, field trips, technology, and presentations. Over six weeks, scholars and staff built meaningful relationships.

Mrs. Gibson reflected on the way the cohort grew together and emphasized the importance of helping young people recognize their own value and potential.

During the graduation portion of the evening, she encouraged the Ambassadors to continue believing in themselves:

“Own your truth and stand in your truth. Know that you are enough and that you are getting better as the days go on.”

She also encouraged scholars to write down their ideas, plans, and future opportunities rather than allowing them to disappear.

“Write down the plan and make it plain. And then you execute.”

Her final challenge placed the future directly in the hands of the young people standing before her:

“The changes you wish to see starts with you.”

CAY Program Director Mr. Barry Freeland reinforced that message by reminding scholars that their environment includes more than the natural world. It also includes their neighborhoods, schools, and the community around them.

“Take what you learned, run with it.”

2026-27 EITC Scholarship Applications Now Available

The application window for the 2026–2027 EITC Scholarship is now closed.

We have received an overwhelming number of applications this year, vastly exceeding our available funding. To ensure we can process the current pool thoroughly and distribute aid to families, we are unable to accept any further submissions at this time.

We will not respond to requests to fill out this application – please do not select to “contact form owner” to ask to apply.

Is Your Child Eligible to Apply for an EITC K-12 Scholarship?

Residents of York County, Pennsylvania
Enrolled in a K-12 tuition-based school in Pennsylvania for the 2026-27 school year
Annual household income is no more than $116,055 plus $20,428 for each dependent child (for example, for a household with 1 dependent child, the maximum household income cannot exceed $136,483).

How to Apply – Application deadline is July 31, 2026

Option 1: Complete and submit the online application with income documentation by July 31, 2026.

Option 2: Download and complete the PDF application. Application and income documentation can be emailed to development@crispusattucks.org or mailed to the following address by July 31:

If you are not required to file a Federal Tax Return and receive only non-taxable income, please submit documentation of your non-taxable income (SSI, Child Support, etc.). This is required for acceptance of this application.

*In calculating household income for the purpose of determining student eligibility, you must include ALL monies and property received of whatever nature and from whatever source, except for the following:

Periodic payments for sickness and disability other than regular wages received during a period of sickness or disability.

Disability, retirement, or other payments arising under workers’ compensation acts, occupational disease acts and similar legislation by any government.

Payments commonly recognized as old age or retirement benefits paid to persons retired from service after reaching a specific age or after a stated period of employment.

Payments commonly known as public assistance or unemployment compensation payments by a governmental agency.

An Historic Grand Opening for Crispus Attucks York History & Culture Center!

On Friday, May 2, 2026, community members, elected officials, supporters, partners, alumni, and generations of Crispus Attucks York families gathered together to celebrate the historic Grand Opening and ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Crispus Attucks York History & Culture Center (CAYHCC) — a transformative new space dedicated to preserving, sharing, and celebrating the rich African American history and culture of York County.

The long-awaited moment marked more than the opening of a building. It represented nearly 95 years of perseverance, vision, service, and community impact by Crispus Attucks York.

The celebration began with excitement, reflection, prayer, and gratitude as supporters gathered outside the stunning new facility before the official ribbon cutting ceremony.

“Because of the Faces…”

CEO Robert “Bobby” Simpson opened the ceremony by reflecting on the generations of people who helped build and sustain Crispus Attucks York over nearly a century.

“Because of the faces on that book cover, it is the reason this four-block campus exists,” Simpson said while holding the event program. “These are pictures of the pioneers who helped build this organization.”

Simpson acknowledged the many challenges the organization faced throughout its history, including moments when people doubted whether the History & Culture Center project could even become reality.

“Once again, we were told there wasn’t enough support in the York community for this to happen,” Simpson shared. “But look where we are today.”

Throughout his remarks, Simpson repeatedly encouraged visitors to appreciate the decades of dedication represented throughout the building.

“As you tour this building today, I just want you to appreciate, appreciate, appreciate Crispus Attucks’ legacy, involvement, and contribution to the community,” he said.

Simpson also recognized the countless volunteers, staff members, board leaders, and supporters who carried the organization through difficult moments and helped transform the dream of the History & Culture Center into reality.

Honoring 95 Years of Service

Pennsylvania State Representative Carol Hill-Evans presented a special citation recognizing Crispus Attucks York’s 95th anniversary and honoring the organization’s impact on York City through education, workforce development, youth programming, senior services, cultural preservation, and neighborhood revitalization.

The citation highlighted major milestones throughout Crispus Attucks York history, including the founding of the Rising STARS program, the Employment & Training Center, the Active Living Center, the Crispus Attucks Charter School, the Early Learning Center, the Goodridge Freedom Center & Underground Railroad Museum, and now the History & Culture Center.

Representative Hill-Evans described the opening as an “epic and momentous milestone” for the York community.

“Why Does CA Need to Exist?”

Before introducing the construction and architectural teams behind the project, Dr. Scott Deisley reflected on the deeper significance of the History & Culture Center and the lasting impact Crispus Attucks York has had on the community for nearly a century.

“You may hear some repetition in what I’m about to say, but it’s important enough to say it a second time,” Deisley shared.

Deisley spoke about the founding of Crispus Attucks York in 1931 and the challenges the organization faced throughout its history, including periods when some questioned whether CA should continue to exist.

“Many in the community asked, ‘Why does CA need to exist?’” he said. “Many felt it was time to close the doors.”

He explained that community leaders Dan Elby and Ray Crenshaw answered that question in 1979 by asking Robert “Bobby” Simpson to step in and help stabilize the organization during one of its most difficult periods.

“Bobby Simpson answered that question definitively,” Deisley said. “The History & Culture Center answers that question as well.”

Deisley emphasized that the Center stands as a reflection of nearly 95 years of community impact, cultural preservation, education, and service to York.

“Imagining a York that did not include CA and the work that they have done over this nearly 100 years would be a bleak history,” he shared.

Building a Vision Into Reality

Tim Tate, President and CEO of Stewart and Tate Construction, reflected on the organization’s resilience through difficult periods in history when some questioned whether Crispus Attucks York should continue to exist.

“Many felt it was time to close the doors,” Tate shared while discussing challenges faced during the 1960s and 1970s. “The History & Culture Center answers that question as well.

Tate emphasized that without the determination of past leaders and supporters, many of the life-changing programs and community revitalization efforts that followed may never have happened.

“Imagining a York that did not include CA and the work that they have done over this nearly 100 years would be a bleak history,” he said.

He also celebrated the continued expansion of the organization’s mission over the decades.

“Nothing has changed since 1931. CA continues to live up to its mission,” Tate shared. “And yet, everything has changed.”

“It’s hard to think that almost two and a half years ago many of us stood right here for the groundbreaking of this incredible building,” said Tim Tate.

The project team praised the collaboration between Crispus Attucks York leadership, the building committee, contractors, designers, and community supporters who worked together to make the project possible.

“As the first multi-story cross-laminated timber structure in South Central Pennsylvania, I think you’ll agree with me that it’s nothing short of amazing,” Tate said.

Guests were especially encouraged to experience the building’s dramatic staircase, rooftop observation deck, and immersive exhibits designed to tell the story of York’s African American community.

“This New Place Is Not a Museum”

Architect Frank Dittenhafer of Murphy & Dittenhafer Architects delivered one of the day’s most memorable reflections, describing the deeper vision behind the design of the building.

“This new place is not a museum,” Dittenhafer explained. “It is a place where everyone is welcome — where people of all ages, all races, and beliefs can meet, listen to each other, and learn together.”

Dittenhafer described the History & Culture Center as a place rooted in light, openness, honesty, and conversation.

“This History & Culture Center is about light,” he said. “Seeing the light. Sensing the light. Spreading and reflecting the light.”

He also highlighted the intentional design choices throughout the building, including interactive exhibits, the Unity Courtyard, rooftop gathering spaces, community galleries, and historical storytelling experiences designed to inspire visitors while encouraging difficult but important conversations.

“Designing this building was a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” Dittenhafer said. “It’s not just another project. Truly, truly a privilege.”

A Community Celebration

Judy A. Ritter-Dickson, Chairwoman welcomed local dignitaries, elected officials, and longtime supporters while celebrating the deep connection many community leaders share with Crispus Attucks York.

“A lot of us came through CA,” Ritter-Dickson said proudly.

The ceremony concluded with prayer, gratitude, and the official ribbon cutting as children helped open the doors to the new History & Culture Center for the very first time.

As guests toured the exhibits, explored the rooftop terrace, visited the gallery spaces, and gathered throughout the building, the significance of the moment was felt throughout the community.

“We can’t do this without a big pair of scissors,” joked Interim Director Dr. Scott Deisley as families and children prepared to help officially open the building.

The new History & Culture Center stands as a powerful reminder of the stories, struggles, resilience, and accomplishments that helped shape York’s African American community while creating a space where future generations can continue to learn, gather, and grow together.

After nearly a century of service, Crispus Attucks York continues to fulfill its mission of “Giving Rise to Possible” through education, cultural preservation, workforce development, and community empowerment.

Crispus Attucks York Exceeds Give Local York Goal, Raising $26,375 from 105 Donors During 95th Anniversary Celebration

Crispus Attucks York is proud and grateful to announce the final results of our 2026 Give Local York campaign. Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, we officially raised $26,375 from 105 generous donors during York County’s biggest day of giving.

As we celebrate 95 years of service to the York community, this year’s campaign became more than just a fundraiser—it became a powerful reflection of what is possible when a community comes together with one mission and one heart.

Originally setting a goal of $20,000 in 24 hours, the support from donors, community partners, board members, staff, alumni, and supporters helped Crispus Attucks York not only reach that goal, but exceed it in a major way.

The final total reflects the most updated amount raised after all online and offline donations were fully entered and processed. Offline donations included gifts received outside of the online giving platform, such as cash donations, personal checks, and other contributions submitted directly to Crispus Attucks York throughout the campaign.

Funds raised during Give Local York 2026 will help continue educational programs, youth development initiatives, summer scholarships for underserved youth, mentorship opportunities, and life-changing experiences that support children and families in our community.

Throughout the 24-hour campaign, the York community showed tremendous energy, encouragement, and belief in the mission of Crispus Attucks York. From social media shares and online donations to personal outreach and community partnerships, every act of support played a role in this success.

“This campaign showed the true power of community,” said Crispus Attucks York leadership. “As we celebrate 95 years of Giving Rise to Possible, we are reminded that our mission continues because of people who believe in our youth and invest in their future.”

Crispus Attucks York Celebrates 95th Annual Meeting and Anniversary of Serving our Community

On Sunday, March 15, 2026, Crispus Attucks York welcomed community leaders, partners, staff, and supporters to its 95th Annual Meeting & Celebration, marking nearly a century of impact, resilience, and community transformation.

Held at the Crispus Attucks York community center, the event reflected on a powerful legacy while casting a bold vision for the future—grounded in the organization’s enduring principle: “WE, NOT I.”

The program began with welcome and introductory remarks from Mrs. Jacquie Martino-Miller, CEO of CA Youth Build Charter School, who set the tone for an afternoon centered on reflection, unity, and progress. Attendees then joined together for the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a moving rendition of “America the Beautiful.”

Mrs. Jacquie Martino-Miller reminded the audience that Crispus Attucks York is more than an organization—it is

“a legacy, a movement, and a community that has stood strong for nearly a century.”

For 95 years, CAY has been a place where:

Hope is restored

Young people find opportunity

Families receive support

Community comes together in service

Her message reinforced the organization’s ongoing commitment to building the future together—not waiting for it.

Organizational Board President Vernon Bracey led the official meeting proceedings, including approval of prior minutes and recognition of community leaders, elected officials, staff, and board members in attendance.

Treasurer George Dotzel provided a comprehensive financial report, highlighting strong financial standing despite ongoing economic challenges such as rising costs and funding pressures.

CAY CEO Robert “Bobby” Simpson reflected on the organization’s resilience, noting that throughout its history, Crispus Attucks York has consistently overcome challenges through strong leadership, community support, and an unwavering belief in its mission.

“We have always faced challenges—but we have met them with courage, planning, and unity.”

Strategic Planning: Building the Future

A major highlight of the event was the Strategic Planning Report, led by Board President Vernon Bracey and CAY Board Member Kristen Heisey, Strategic Planning Chairwoman, who served as the keynote voice for this portion of the program.

Heisey outlined a comprehensive roadmap for the future of Crispus Attucks York, emphasizing that the organization is in a “pivotal season” as it prepares for the next generation of leadership, growth, and impact.

She shared that the strategic planning process—launched in July 2025—focuses on:

Strengthening financial sustainability

Expanding fundraising and donor engagement

Preparing for leadership succession

Leveraging assets, including the soon-to-open History and Culture Center

Enhancing operational efficiency and impact

Heisey also captured the essence of CAY in a powerful statement:

“We are about empowering individuals and transforming our community.”

Her remarks made clear that while challenges exist, the opportunities ahead are even greater—and the future of CAY is being built with intention, strategy, and community input.

Community leaders, advocates, and supporters gathered for an inspiring evening at the Black Excellence Gala: Legacy in Motion, hosted by the African American Cultural Alliance of Lancaster. The event celebrated individuals whose leadership, service, and commitment continue to uplift communities across the region.

Serving as Master of Ceremonies, Michael Fuller, Anchor and Reporter for WGAL News, welcomed guests and guided the audience through a memorable evening dedicated to recognizing excellence and honoring legacy.

Opening the Evening

The program began with welcoming remarks from Michael Fuller, setting the tone for an evening centered on leadership, culture, and community impact.

Following the welcome, Robert McKenzie led a meaningful Libation & Elder Call, honoring ancestors and elders whose strength and sacrifice paved the way for today’s leaders.

Guests then shared dinner together before the awards program began.

A Powerful Performance

The audience experienced an electrifying performance by the Infamous Unstoppables Drill Team & Drum Squad, also led by Vincent Derek Smith.

Their powerful chant energized the room:

“Confidence is what I want. Confidence is what I’m going to have.
Determination is what I need. Determination is what I’m going to have.
Unstoppable is what I am. Unstoppable is what I’m going to be.
Excuses? I don’t have any. Failure will never be one.”

A Vision from the President: Vincent Derek Smith

During the program, Vincent Derek Smith, President of the African American Cultural Alliance, shared a powerful message about the meaning behind the gala’s theme, “Legacy in Motion.”

Smith reflected on the strength that runs through communities—a strength rooted in love, resilience, and hope passed down through generations. He emphasized that legacy lives not only in history but in the stories communities share, the elders they honor, and the young people they inspire.

According to Smith, Legacy in Motion represents the courage of individuals who rise early to support their families, the wisdom of elders who guide future generations, and the determination of young leaders who step forward to create change.

He reminded attendees that honoring legacy means recognizing both the sacrifices of those who came before and the responsibility of those working today to continue that work.

Smith also highlighted the mission of the African American Cultural Alliance, which focuses on youth mentorship, cultural preservation, education, and community empowerment.

He encouraged the community to stay engaged and support the Alliance’s efforts.

“Together, we are the architects of our future,” Smith shared, reminding the audience that the strength of a community lies in its ability to work collectively toward progress.

The evening then turned to recognizing individuals whose lifetime of work has left a lasting impact on their communities.

Honoring Robert “Bobby” Simpson

Introducing the award, Michael Fuller reflected on Mr. Simpson’s influence and decades of leadership.

“Tonight we celebrate a man whose work has strengthened communities, preserved history, and created opportunity for generations.”

Robert Simpson, affectionately known as Bobby Simpson, has served as Chief Executive Officer of the Crispus Attucks Association of York since 1979.

Under his leadership, what began as a modest community center has grown into a dynamic four-block campus offering vital programs that strengthen families and neighborhoods across York.

These initiatives include:

Early childhood education
Workforce development and job training
Housing and neighborhood revitalization
Cultural and educational programming

Mr. Simpson has also played an important role in preserving York’s African American heritage, including advocating for the development of the Crispus Attucks African American History and Cultural Center.

In addition to his leadership at Crispus Attucks York, he has served on several regional boards, including York Hospital, York College of Pennsylvania, and WITF Public Media.

A Moment of Gratitude

Accepting the award, Mr. Simpson took time to thank those who supported him throughout his journey.

He began by expressing appreciation to Vincent Derek Smith and the African American Cultural Alliance for honoring him.

“You have recognized the 50 years I have given to the community. Most importantly, you’ve allowed me to smell the roses while I’m still living.”

Mr. Simpson also thanked lifelong friends Dan Elby and Ray Crenshaw, who supported him when he became CEO in 1979.

He expressed deep gratitude to his family, including his wife of 60 years, his son Mark, daughter Wonque, his grandchildren, and his godson Carl Williamson.

Recognizing the Crispus Attucks York Family

Mr. Simpson invited Crispus Attucks York staff members to stand and be recognized for their dedication and years of service.

He also thanked the organization’s Board of Directors for their leadership and support.

Their collective efforts, he noted, have helped build Crispus Attucks York into the transformative community institution it is today.

A Story from the Early Days

Mr. Simpson also shared an important story about the early development of Crispus Attucks York.

In 1980, when the organization sought financing for a new community development project, many banks declined to help.

However, Bob Pullo and Donna Pullo stepped forward. Mr. Simpson recalled that Bob Pullo was the only banker willing to lend $800,000, a pivotal investment that helped launch the project and support the organization’s future growth.

“It does not matter if one million people tell you no, or if ten million people tell you no. If you get one yes from God, that’s all you need to be successful.”

He then reflected on the journey that brought him to this moment.

“As you can see, we received our ‘Yes’ many years ago.”

Following the awards presentation and President’s Address by Vincent Derek Smith, Michael Fuller returned to deliver closing remarks before inviting guests to continue celebrating on the dance floor.

On Monday, January 19, 2026, Crispus Attucks York proudly hosted its 44th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, bringing together community members, leaders, volunteers, and partners for a meaningful day of remembrance, celebration, and action in honor of Dr. King’s enduring legacy.

The morning began with a moving ceremony that set the tone for unity and reflection. The Bells of Order and Lighting of the Candles symbolized remembrance and hope, followed by a warm welcome and a powerful invocation by Bishop Anthony Sease. Together, the audience lifted their voices in song with “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” honoring the history and spirit of the Civil Rights Movement.

Guests also reflected on the impact of MLK Day at Crispus Attucks York, highlighting over four decades of service dedicated to uplifting the York community.

🎶 Inspiring Performances & King Moments

The program featured a beautiful musical selection by Evangelist Richenda Green of Emmanuel COGIC, which powerfully conveyed themes of resilience, hope, and unity. Also an amazing “King Moment” that took the crowd by surprise. Kelly Summerford, MC of the event, had a creative way of interviewing Dr. King.

Festival of Trees 2025 Brought Holiday Magic and Meaning to the Goodridge Freedom Center

The 2025 Festival of Trees at the William C Goodridge Freedom Center & Underground Railroad Museum was a beautiful celebration of the season—filled with warmth, creativity, history, and community pride. Visitors experienced far more than festive decorations. Each tree told a story, honored tradition, and reflected the rich cultural spirit of York.

From whimsical designs (View Full Tree Description Booklet) that delighted children to meaningful tributes rooted in heritage, the Festival of Trees transformed the museum into a welcoming holiday showcase—bringing families, friends, and supporters together to celebrate the joy of the season.

A Festival Filled With Stories and Tradition

One of the most heartfelt displays was “Santa Simpson,” decorated by Gabriella Messenger, Curator of the Crispus Attucks York History & Culture Center. The tree featured ornaments and photos from the early 2000s, when CAY CEO Robert “Bobby” Simpson dressed as Santa Claus and posed with children for holiday memories. Many guests enjoyed searching the tree for familiar faces—recognizing friends, family members, and even themselves from years ago.

Holiday traditions from earlier centuries were also beautifully captured in “A Victorian Christmas” and “The Fruits of Christmas,” decorated by Jane Heidlebaugh. These displays honored historic holiday customs, including the legacy of William C. Goodridge, who once invited York residents to view what was believed to be the city’s first Christmas tree. Visitors also enjoyed the fun tradition of searching for the hidden Christmas pickle, said to bring good luck.

Honoring Craftsmanship and Handmade History

The festival featured meaningful tributes to tradition and handcrafted artistry. “Sew it Goes,” decorated by Barbara Graver with help from Susan Hamberger, celebrated the time when gifts were often handmade. The tree represented the creativity and care behind hand-sewn dolls, embroidered keepsakes, and small stitched items filled with surprises—reminding guests how precious and personal holiday giving once was.

Celebrating York’s Pride and National Significance

Several displays highlighted the pride York holds in its historic place in America. A standout was Explore York’s America 250th-themed tree, decorated by Andrea Ryan and Katie Kline, honoring York’s important role in the nation’s founding. The display celebrated the adoption of the Articles of Confederation and included Explore York’s commemorative ornaments—becoming a favorite photo spot throughout the event.

Faith, Symbolism, and the Meaning of Christmas

Faith and symbolism were also present in the festival. “The Meaning of Christmas,” decorated by Nancy Westbury, reflected the spiritual heart of the holiday season. Featuring nativity ornaments, angels, and crosses, the tree highlighted the deeper meaning behind common Christmas colors such as red, green, gold, and silver.

The traditional beauty continued with “Christmas Spirit,” decorated by Carol Kauffman and Jane Heidlebaugh, with gold stars, snowflakes, and red ornaments symbolizing love, peace, and hope.

Family Fun and Childlike Wonder

The Festival of Trees included many displays that captured playful holiday energy, especially for children. “Whimsical Wonderland” by Debra W. Eberly (d.w.designs) brought joy with colorful décor, ribbons, and fun winter-themed accents.

Another visitor favorite was “Cookie Cutter Delight,” decorated by Beth Gross. Inspired by cookie cutter week, the tree challenged guests to spot cookie cutters representing holidays across the entire year—not just Christmas. Many visitors said it brought back memories of baking traditions, especially classic holiday cookies like sand tarts.

And of course, “The March of the Nutcrackers” delighted guests with its tribute to the world-famous Nutcracker ballet, which premiered in 1892. The tree celebrated nutcrackers as symbols of tradition, protection, and good luck.

Cultural Celebrations From Around the World

A powerful part of the 2025 festival was how it honored cultures from around the world.

Decorated by Stephany Sechrist, “Up Among the Clouds” celebrated Peruvian heritage, featuring bright colors, Indigenous-inspired art, and textiles. The display included paper chains created from patterns by an Indigenous Peruvian rainforest artist featured by the Smithsonian, adding both education and beauty to the exhibit.

Sechrist also decorated “Showers of Blessing,” featuring a vibrant parasol from India, symbolic peacock accents, and handmade angels from Bangladesh—creating a stunning representation of global tradition and celebration.

The joy continued with “Celebrate! Fiesta!” decorated by Nancy Westbury, which embraced Hispanic holiday culture in vibrant fashion. Guests admired festive colors, piñatas, Southwest symbols, and traditional religious figurines. The message of “Feliz Navidad” radiated through every detail.

Honoring Evalina Goodridge and the Goodridge Legacy

A deeply meaningful display was “Evalina Welcomes You,” decorated by Mark and Debbie DeBowes, honoring Evalina Goodridge. This tree highlighted her role as a hostess, businesswoman, and mother, reflecting her love of elegance and tradition. The display featured a dress form centerpiece symbolizing Evalina’s grace—and reminded visitors that the Goodridge family’s décor was once so admired that they charged admission for the public to view their Christmas tree.

The DeBowes’ also decorated “An Orange for Christmas,” showcasing an important historical detail: Goodridge’s store provided citrus fruits in December—an uncommon seasonal treasure. The theme reminded visitors that something as small as an orange could be a meaningful Christmas gift in earlier times.

Kwanzaa: A Powerful Cultural Tribute

The festival also featured a moving tribute to Kwanzaa, decorated by Stephany Sechrist, honoring African American culture and heritage. The tree represented the celebration of Kwanzaa from December 26 through January 1, including its seven principles: unity, self-determination, collective responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith.

Guests also learned about Kwanzaa’s connection to York: the holiday was created in 1966 by former York resident Ronald Everett, a William Penn High School graduate who later became known as Maulana Karenga.

Rising STARS Experience Etiquette & Elegance at the Country Club of York

At Crispus Attucks York, we believe learning extends far beyond the classroom—and this week, our Rising STARS had an unforgettable opportunity to shine outside their everyday environment!

Our students took a special trip to the Country Club of York, where they were warmly welcomed and guided through a professional etiquette dining experience led by Shannon Seitz, Clubhouse Manager. With grace, patience, and expertise, Mrs. Seitz introduced our youth to the world of fine dining, social manners, and confidence-building life skills.

🍽️ Exploring Etiquette Through a Delicious Three-Course Meal

The students enjoyed a thoughtfully prepared meal, served as a true dining experience:

• Parmesan-crusted Chicken Milanese
• Mashed potatoes
• Steamed broccoli

Dessert
• Chocolate cake—always a favorite!

Throughout the meal, Ms. Seitz guided participants on everything from posture and napkin placement to conversation etiquette, fork and knife handling, and how to navigate a formal meal with confidence.

For many of our students, this was their first time in a country club dining room—a space often reserved for adults and formal occasions. Experiences like this help youth build social skills, develop professionalism, and feel comfortable in diverse environments.

These hands-on learning opportunities empower our Rising STARS to grow into poised, confident leaders—ready to shine in any room they enter.
