LaCie has unveiled a first-of-its-kind 8TB portable RAID for transporting large projects safely and efficiently, the LaCie Rugged RAID Shuttle Drive.
Here’s a closer look at what’s new.
Rugged RAID Shuttle
Building on 14 years of the iconic LaCie Rugged design, the new LaCie Rugged RAID Shuttle is designed for feature filmmakers and independent video professionals, along with photographers, video bloggers, traveling content creators and musicians.
The Rugged RAID Shuttle delivers 8TB of storage in a clever flat design, developed by our consumer design and engineering teams. Under its hood are two 4TB, 2.5-inch hard drives—enough space for more than 200 hours of 4K video footage. It’s even self-encrypting for added protection, and its hardware RAID 0/1 lets the user control capacity/speed versus redundancy.
Rather than stacking the drives—customary for high-capacity external HDDs—our engineers found a way to arrange the drives horizontally and still maintain the product’s extreme ruggedness. LaCie is the first to offer this innovation for creative pros.
“Arranging the drives horizontally within the chassis creates a slimmer profile which allows it to fit more easily into shipping envelopes; this ease of shipment inspired the design,” says Michael Morgan, director of hardware development for LaCie products. “Rather than vertically stacking the drives, the flat design also provides a thermally superior system, and it’s consistent with other creative professional product form factors such as tablets.”
New innovations ensure renowned LaCie ruggedness
“We knew arranging the drives horizontally provides better heat dissipation, and at the same time we put extra attention and innovation into the drive-shock mounting and PCBA designs to ensure the final product meets the LaCie Rugged family’s renowned robustness specifications in a suitably compact product profile,” explains Morgan. “The team did a great job developing a very robust product.”
Morgan and the team hope the drive will free filmmakers, in particular, to rethink how they move large data files from one location to another.
“It can take professional filmmakers hours to upload huge 4K video files to the cloud,” says Clément Barberis, LaCie product marketing manager. “Then their clients or partners must also deal with bandwidth on the other end when viewing or downloading. In many cases, it’s more efficient to transfer those files to a portable drive and ship it to their clients. We’ve made that easier now, with Shuttle’s unique form and its government-grade data encryption.”
The Rugged RAID Shuttle is the company’s first consumer RAID product to incorporate Seagate Secure hardware-encryption technology—a feature that also required engineering excellence.

Government-grade full-disk hardware encryption
“Our challenge was to provide our customers with government-grade encryption on a multi-drive platform while maintaining the same streamlined out-of-box experience and ease of use that we’ve delivered with our DAS products (direct-attached storage, or traditional external hard drives),” says Keith Clanton, director of client software for LaCie products. “Toolkit, our modular desktop-software suite, allows us to deliver this functionality seamlessly on both Macs and PCs through a consistent and familiar interface.”
By coupling the performance and robustness of RAID technology with the security of full-disk hardware encryption and making it all easily configurable and accessible through Toolkit, LaCie has created “a killer product that delivers an unprecedented level of capability to our customers,” Clanton says.
The Rugged RAID Shuttle can transfer files at up to 250MB per second in RAID 0 for speed and can be configured in RAID 1 for data redundancy. The drive features a rugged design from Neil Poulton, with drop, shock, water and dust resistance. The drive offers the USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10Gb/second) technology with the latest USB-C connector, compatible with Thunderbolt 3 and backward-compatible with USB 3.0. It has a three-year limited warranty and included Seagate Rescue Data Recovery Services, along with a one-month subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud All-Apps plan.

LaCie launched this week: a new LaCie 2big desktop RAID with up to 16TB that can be easily configured and used by anyone.
Here’s a closer look at what’s new.
LaCie 2big RAID — simpler workflow, professional-grade speed
Built for creative pros with a need for professional-grade speed, the new LaCie 2big RAID offers up to 16TB of desktop storage; inside are Seagate’s IronWolf Pro enterprise-class NAS drives. Users can transfer footage quickly, with speeds up to 440MB per second (in RAID 0), and it offers USB-C for universal compatibility, including Thunderbolt 3, USB 3.1 Gen 2 and legacy USB 3.0.
Engineers updated the LaCie Toolkit software to take the mystery out of setting up RAID 0 and 1 modes. “It’s now as easy as 1-2-3 to configure and use a truly professional RAID storage solution,” says Barberis.
The 2big RAID’s space-gray aluminum enclosure is designed to complement Apple professional computers like the iMac Pro. It has a standard five-year limited warranty with Rescue Data Recovery Services and complimentary one-month Adobe All-Apps plan.

The 2big RAID is an affordable addition to the LaCie Big RAID lineup. It follows in the path of the very popular feature-rich 2big Dock. That product offers greater storage capacity and embedded 4-in-1 docking station capabilities.
“The 2big Dock has been a popular product, and we saw there was an opportunity to serve another tier in the market with a solution many customers are interested in,” says Paul McParland, VP of development for LaCie products. “It’s a natural follow-up to deliver a product in the same form factor, at an attractive price, for customers who primarily need the RAID capabilities.”
“Our goal is to make our RAID products easy and cost-effective, yet extremely reliable for creative professionals,” adds Barberis. “There are a lot of creative pros who haven’t stepped up to RAID desktop storage—such as video hobbyists, wedding photographers and graphic designers, who may be exclusively using portable hard drives right now because it feels easier. We built this product with those customers in mind, to help them advance their workflow and make their job easier.”

If you’re a phone-centric user looking for a secure drive that matches your lifestyle, then you definitely need to take a look at the SecureDrive BT SSD. Unlike other secure drives, which rely on a keypad or an client app on your PC to unlock them, the SecureDrive BT uses an app and Bluetooth, the wireless connectivity that’s available on every modern phone and mobile device.
Even beyond lifestyle and convenience, managing the drive using your phone or mobile device may also be the most secure way to do it. And that’s what corporate and government buyers, the real target audience, are more concerned with.
As I said, the SecureDrive BT uses Bluetooth and the Android/iOS app for unlocking the drive. But it doesn’t transfer data via BT, so it’s basically just a USB drive with a new approach to access. The drive, as all do, locks itself automatically when power is removed, so you don’t even need the app for that. Is this approach handy? I’m not in any way shape or form phone-centric,
yet I prefer using my phone for the task for several reasons.
For one thing, keypads on hard drives are rarely as easy to use as they look. Generally, they’re designed not to show wear patterns (which make it easier to steal PINs) and aren’t easy to press. I’ve mis-entered PINs more times that I care to count. But even without wear patterns, traces from your fingers are a dead giveaway to forensic pros.
Then there’s client software, which is often used to unlock and administrate secure drives. Personally, I’d find it more convenient if there were some, as my computers have Bluetooth. But as SecureData, the vendor, pointed out, software is vulnerable to key trackers and other exploits. If the company made it available, some enterprising soul would, of course go, against their own company’s policy and install it, so SecureData simply forgoes it.
Also, some secure drive client software I’ve seen goes to such great lengths to prevent hacking, by shifting the keyboard after every digit or some other trick, that it’s a colossal pain to use. Far worse than pulling your phone out of your pocket and pecking a few digits.
Of course, there are secure sites where phones aren’t allowed, so in that scenario, you’ll need a secure drive sporting a keypad, something SecureData also makes.

Industry’s largest capacity 16TB hard disk drives deliver new level of storage density and improved power efficiency.
Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation (“Toshiba”) announces MG08 Series, the industry’s largest capacity 16TB[1] [2] Conventional Magnetic Recording (CMR) HDD. With 33% more capacity than today’s widely adopted 12TB drives, and 14% more capacity than prior 14TB models, MG08 16TB drives are compatible with the widest range of applications and operating systems, and adapted to mixed random and sequential read and write workloads in both cloud and traditional datacenter environments.
The MG08 Series is Toshiba’s second-generation helium-sealed HDD family, and eighth-generation Enterprise Capacity HDD family. Toshiba has delivered its industry-leading 16TB capacity and improved power efficiency by utilizing the 9-disk helium design, introduced last year in 14TB models, and its own advanced precision laser welding process to ensure the helium remains sealed inside the drive case. The MG08 features 7,200rpm performance, a 550TB per year workload rating[3], a 2.5 million-hour MTTF[4], a 512Mib cache buffer[5], and a choice of SATA and SAS interfaces—all in an industry-standard, 3.5-inch[6] form factor.
The MG08 Series further illustrates Toshiba’s commitment to advancing HDD design to meet the evolving needs for storage devices suited for use in cloud-scale servers and storage infrastructure. As data growth continues at an explosive pace, the industry-leading 16TB CMR capacity will help cloud-scale service providers and storage solutions designers to achieve higher storage densities for cloud, hybrid-cloud and on-premises rack-scale storage. With its improved power efficiency and 16TB capacity, the MG08 Series will help lower the TCO of storage infrastructure designed for applications such as data-protection, big data aggregation, content serving and digital archiving.
“Toshiba’s new 16TB MG08 Series delivers new levels of storage capacity and density while delivering improved power efficiency for our cloud-scale and storage solutions customers. Only high-density HDD technology can achieve our customers’ critical TCO objectives at a cost of pennies per GB,” says Shuji Takaoka, General Manager of Storage Products Sales & Marketing Division at Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation.
