The Senior Engineer in System Planning provides transmission focused subject matter expertise in power system studies and project development by carrying out assignments associated with the modeling and development of the transmission system. The role requires extensive experience associated with the modeling, analyses, and planning level designs of transmission lines and substation facilities in an electric power system. Typical reliability studies include analyses of power flow, transient stability, short circuit, and electromagnetic transients. This position also represents the company on regional and national transmission committees regarding transmission planning matters for New England Power Pool (NEPOOL), North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC), New England Power Coordination Council (NPCC), and Independent System Operators of New England (ISO-NE).

Job Summary

Eversource Energy Transmission System Planning group consists of dynamic and highly motivated, collaborative, technical team of engineers responsible for planning an efficient and reliable electrical transmission grid across a wide geographic area, spanning the New England states of Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. The Eversource System Planning team uses the latest industry software and methods to analyze and assess complex transmission systems across Eversource Energy’s transmission and sub-transmission networks. Your role in the Transmission System Planning team would include collaborating, performing, and leading regional and local reliability and/or market driven studies across our operating companies and beyond including voltage, thermal, PV, transfer limit, short circuit, and stability assessments.  In addition, you will also participate, perform and lead compliance studies for Eversource Energy service companies.  Eversource provides platforms for our planners to interact with internal teams and encourages them to become active with their industry peers on regional activities (e.g. NERC, NPCC, ISO’s, etc.). Each planner has the freedom to work independently while being given opportunities to lead, all while receiving constant support from and collaborating with other team members across Eversource Energy.

A familiarity with various planning standards (e.g. NERC, NPCC, ISO-NE etc.) and planning software packages such as PSS/E and TARA is certainly a plus; however,  Eversource is looking for a collaborative, technical and innovative power systems engineers with good communications skills, that are capable to be part of a highly effective team to transform the Transmission System Planning organization. Our planning team also work collaboratively with other related technical disciplines in the electrical power industry such as substation design, construction and protection and control systems.

Protection and Controls Engineering is responsible for the application, design, and documentation of electrical protection and control systems in Substations and on Distribution and Transmission lines in the Eversource-NH system. Responsibilities include developing circuit breaker, recloser, and fuse applications along with the calculation of all related settings. Engineers will also develop interconnection studies for generator interfaces, perform short circuit studies, and the analysis of system operations. Typical assignments involve the application of numerical protection and control systems and devices, distribution automation, SCADA RTUs, and digital monitoring devices.

A Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering and a minimum of five years of related experience is required.  Other requirements include strong analytical/computer skills, and an aptitude for detailed engineering.  The ideal candidate will also have a power engineering background, experience performing overcurrent and distance coordination studies using ASPEN OneLiner modeling software or equivalent, design experience utilizing IEC61850 protocol, and be familiar with digital protection, control, and communications concepts.  A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.  Will have storm restoration and emergency assignments. 

Work is performed primarily in an office environment which requires sitting, standing, walking and climbing stairs are involved.  Job can require traveling to operating districts, and companies within and outside the state.  Job will also require travel to electrical substation facilities as necessary for site walk downs and meetings.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
An Associate’s Degree in Industrial Electricity or the equivalent in combined education and experience is required.  A complete understanding of and the ability to apply electrical theory, as well as mechanical aptitude, manual and finger dexterity, and color distinction are also required.  The ability to perform advanced math functions, read schematics and analyze system problems, operate, interpret and maintain calibrated inspection equipment, climb and work on ladders and elevated structures, and train and instruct others are all required.  Individual must have the ability to plan, oversee and direct complex jobs both during normal work hours and in emergency situations.  Individual must be able to perform transmission/distribution switching operations.  Individual must also possess and demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both written and oral) with customers, both internal and external to NU.  Individual will have storm restoration and emergency duty assignments.  Other requirements of the position include basic computer skills, a Commercial Drivers License (or the ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License) with endorsements for Air Brakes, Hazardous Materials and Tank Vehicles, and respirator clearance.  Applicants may be required to successfully complete the EEI CAST aptitude test.

REMARKS:

This position is responsible for site-specific energy engineering analyses for technical Commercial & Industrial (C&I) Implementation projects.  Provides technical quality assurance reviews of energy engineering studies.  Investigates new technologies for Implementation programs and customer facilities.  Serves as a technical liaison for Eversource on commercial and industrial energy efficiency issues.  Provides detailed engineering support for value-added engineering, procurement and construction projects.  Provides direct technical project management as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1.  Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical, Electrical, Energy, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering.

2.  At least three (3) years of experience relating to the performance of duties and responsibilities of this position.

3. Basic knowledge in the areas of lighting, HVAC and fluid handling, refrigeration, compressed air systems, as well as background with control methodologies and systems, engineering economic analyses, and manufacturing and industrial processes.

4. Demonstrated knowledge of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and heat transfer in relation to energy efficiency in commercial and industrial facilities.

5. Familiarity with accepted energy engineering and HVAC industry standards, including applicable energy relevant building codes.

6. Proficiency with various computer software applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, relational databases, AutoCad, and various energy simulation tools such as eQuest, AirMaster+, and MotorMaster.

7. Ability to interface effectively and collaborate with clients, peers, project personnel, and all levels of management to develop program-wide policies and procedures; demonstrated ability to take initiative and accountability for results.

Job Description

Individual performs a wide variety of tasks including but not limited to installing, testing, repairing and maintaining electrical transmission equipment of all types and voltage classes throughout the region.  Such tasks include but are not limited to the installation of electrical equipment, such as  transformers, metering equipment, station service equipment, bus work and other associated electrical equipment, wiring and installing switchboards, related control equipment and remote control equipment, assisting in the operational analysis, trouble analysis and repair on electrical, electronic and electromechanical equipment.  The individual will also be able to operate bucket trucks, traveling cranes and a variety of power operated equipment.
