We are obviously all concerned with the electricity crisis that we are facing here in California. Conservation should be in all of our minds. However, as a pool owner you must make decisions that will conserve when possible, yet still provide you with the crystal clear water that we all enjoy and protect the investment that you have made in your backyard! Remember inadequate filtration can lead to cloudy water and even contribute to pools turning green! The cost of cleaning up these problems is usually more than what was saved! Please do conserve, but conserve cautiously and wisely!
We urge you to use caution when reducing the number of hours that your filtration system is operating on a daily basis. Do not make large cuts at one time. If you want to reduce your filtration time, start by reducing it by One hour. A better alternative would be to reduce the amount of time that your automatic pool cleaner pump operates. Most pools can be cleaned by an automatic cleaner in as little as two or three hours per day! Another way to help is to set your filtration system to run during non-peak use hours. Running your filter in the middle of the night. After 9:00 P.M. would be a good time to start your filter cycle.
Below is a chart that shows approximate costs to operate pumps of various horsepower. Pump technology has advanced significantly in the last ten years. Many of the older style pumps required a large horsepower to provide satisfactory water flow. Today we can pump about the same amount of water with a lot less horsepower. If you have an older 1½ or 2 horsepower pump, you might consider replacing it with a newer ¾ or 1 horsepower pump. This will save you significantly (more than by filtering for one hour less per day) without reducing your filter time and help conserve electricity! It is a win, win situation! Extreme rainfall can sometimes cause problems with swimming pools. They may get hazy or even slightly green afterwards! This is caused by all of the impurities washing into the pool with the rain! In extreme cases, yards with poor drainage or design can even get excess runoff of rainwater into the pool. Sometimes planter areas overflow into the pool and take dirt with it! Some pools may even turn a muddy brown! We cannot prevent this!
If your pool turns hazy or slightly green, please run your filter continuously and it should clear within a couple of days. Please make sure that all of your baskets are kept clean so that the filter will operate efficiently. The best thing to do is to not allow excess water to flow into the pool. If drainage is a problem, try sandbagging to redirect the water and prevent it from flowing into the pool. It may be beneficial to review your landscaping and see if there are things that can be done to minimize the potential for water to flow into the pool.
If we need to make extra trips to clear up these situations, we will have to charge additional trip charges. Once again, prevention is the best policy!

Extremely cold freezing temperatures are forecast for later this week. When we encounter temperatures approaching 32 degrees and below, action must be taken to protect your swimming pool equipment and piping. We all know that standing water freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit. When water freezes, it expands, or grows in space. This expansion can cause damage by breaking plastic pipe or plastic pumps and filters. It can even crack bronze or brass components! Water that is in motion however, is much harder to freeze.
The best way to protect your equipment and piping is to run your equipment during the time we encounter these freezing temperatures. As an example, most of the manufacturers of computerized control systems for swimming pool equipment include freeze protection in their logic. They have an air temperature sensor and when the air temperature reaches their preset temperature, the system is automatically turned on and it runs until the temperature reaches a safe level. If your system has a computerized control system, check your owners manual to learn about this feature.
If your pool is operated by mechanical timeclocks or manual on/off switches, you must take action to protect your equipment and piping. We suggest you set your timeclocks to run, or manually turn on the system during the times that we are expected to encounter freezing temperatures. This usually means running your system from late at night until mid morning. In more extreme temperatures you may need to run your system continuously until the temperature rises above freezing.
There is a module available to add a freeze protection sensor to mechanical timeclocks. It can be installed in most cases for under $250. A relatively small price to pay to protect your equipment and piping. The freeze that hit in late Dec. 1990 and Jan. 1991 caused severe damage to those who were not quick to act to protect their investment!
Don’t hesitate Be prepared for this. It is coming. We do not recommend just turning your system off. There may be water in the system that could freeze and cause damage! If you have any questions, do not hesitate to call our office!

Iron Stains One of the most common stains found in swimming pools and spas is from iron. Iron staining is a result of ferrous oxide (rust) coming out of solution (precipitating) and depositing on the interior surfaces and components of the pool.
The color of iron stains ranges from light yellow to dark brown. The resultant color will vary depending on the amount of iron present, the length of time the staining has been occurring and the condition and type of material that is being stained. Iron stains have no specific pattern of deposit, however, there are areas that are generally more receptive to iron staining:
1. Where the most porous plaster is.
2. Where the least amount of calcium has previously been deposited.
3. Where the most amount of calcium is currently being deposited.
4. Where the least circulation is occurring within the pool.
5. Where the pool cleaner spends less time or is brushed less.
6. Where the return lines are installed with a high flow rate hitting surface
It is very easy to mistake iron stains for dirt stains. The color is similar and the most likely stained areas are similar because many of them are related to flow and cleaning patterns. There is usually a fairly easy way to distinguish iron stains from dirt stains. Iron normally has a greater attraction to plastic than it does plaster (cement), which is what most inground pools are constructed with. Because of this, if you look at the plastic components of the pool (return outlets, inside of the skimmer, automatic pool cleaners and hoses) and find a yellow to light brown film on them, you probably have an iron problem. Dirt does not usually have this effect.
There are many sources for iron in swimming pool water, the most common are:
1. Source water provided by water district (The water used to fill and refill pool).
2. Galvanized or other iron-based pipe in the swimming pool filtration system.
3. Galvanized or other iron-based pipe in the water district system or fill line.
4. Fertilizer containing iron is spilled or sprayed into swimming pool.
Contamination from source water and/or water district or home pipe containing iron can be determined by analysis of the tap water or water used to fill the swimming pool. Fertilizer contamination usually must be acknowledged by the individual responsible, although certain conditions may lead one to this likely source. Iron contributed by the components of the filtration system can usually be determined by inspection. The most likely contributors would be galvanized nipples threaded directly into or out of the pump and/or heater.
It is rare to actually get a reading when testing properly treated swimming pool water for iron content, since properly treated water oxidizes the iron and changes its form. A more extensive test may be performed which will reveal iron in water that has been properly treated, but it is usually much easier to just test the fill water. In some cases it may be necessary to perform the more extensive test on the fill water, depending on water district treatment procedures, to determine if iron is present.
Swimming pools that do not receive regular and necessary super-chlorination and only receive treatment with low levels of chlorine, such as with a feeder or floater, may actually contain dissolved iron particles in solution that will precipitate and stain the surface as soon as the water receives its first proper and necessary super-chlorination.
Iron deposits may be removed from interior swimming pool surfaces in a few different ways. Without draining the pool, there are chemical methods of stain removal which may or may not be successful, depending on the severity and chemical make-up of the stain and the condition of and type of interior surface of the pool. The stains may also be removed by draining the pool and performing a chemical or
acid wash on the surface or by sanding the pool surface. You should consult with a professional swimming pool plastering contractor or service company before proceeding with a treatment program.
Iron deposits may be inhibited or minimized, and sometimes may be avoided altogether by the use of a chelating or sequestering agent. For more information regarding stain inhibitors or stain inhibitor programs, please call your local Swim Chem office.

Definition: Plaster that has been altered in color by the addition of a dye. The most common color variations are blacks, grays and browns, although other shades may be created by the plasterer. Colored plaster has the same characteristics as white plaster, although staining, etching, crazing and scaling phenomena are frequently more noticeable on colored plaster.
Performance Standard: It is the nature of colored plaster that it will accentuate all of the characteristics that are normally found in white pool plaster. Mottling can be more pronounced. The plaster can exhibit pigment stains, streaks, more noticeable checking and crazing and be uneven in color. Color shade variations will exist between color sample chips and mixed plaster. The color may fade out completely or get gradually lighter over time and often will not be the shade the owner anticipated. None of these conditions is considered a deficiency.
The recommended practice for pool builders is to educate the pool owner of these characteristics of colored pools before the pool is built and plastered. Documentation of this is recommended in the form of a signed “Colored Plaster Agreement” or “Colored Plaster Release”.
Possible Deficiency: Excess calcium or “whiteness” on colored plaster. Calcium that has settled into check or crazing cracks.
Possible Causes: This is a normal occurrence with plastered pools and is more noticeable on colored pools because the white stands out.
Solutions: Color variation may be minimized by proper start-up water chemistry and/or the use of a sequestering or clarifying agent can help suspend these particles in the water until they are filtered out. Several months after start-up, the pool can be drained and given a light acid wash to strip away any remaining calcium scale.
