]]>As England fought valiantly for the European Cup at Wembley on Sunday evening, across the channel there was much celebration from a team of cyclists, captained by Gareth Southgate’s old teammate Geoff Thomas.
The Tour 21 – organised by Andy Cook Cycling on behalf of Cure Leukaemia – was an epic ride following the route of the 2021 Tour de France, exactly a week before the pros. 18 riders took on the challenge of this 3,500km+ route to raise their target of £1million.
Cure Leukaemia secured the right to be the Tour de France’s first official UK Charity partner in the run up to the event – helped in part by the determination of leader Geoff Thomas, who has completed the TdF route four times in the past, first riding it in 2005 soon after his own recovery from Leukaemia, an illness he contracted a year after retiring from a distinguished professional football career.
Andy Cook Cycling has worked with Geoff previously, and were invited to organise all the cycling specific aspects of this event for GT15 last year. Due to the pandemic, the 2020 version had to be cancelled, and it wasn’t until about 10 days before it began this year that the green light was given. Andy and Jacqui worked with the staff at Cure Leukaemia and their hotel booking agent to book suitable accommodation, arrange (fully vaccinated) staff and finalise travel plans for the riders and crew.
It was tough for the riders – some of whom had been waiting to do this for over a year – to know they had sponsorship in place and miles of training in their legs, but that they might not be able to complete the challenge. But they were ready and raring to go when they got the call, and there was a buzz of excitement in the air as they were collected from across the country and taken to Portsmouth on 17th June for the ferry to France. Paul Martin from European Bike Express (which you may recognise as the main coach & bike transport from RAB) did a stellar job getting the riders to the event, around the route, and home again – even organising the very hungry cyclists a free buffet meal on the ferry home!
Marshal Land Rover supplied a couple of great vehicles to support the team. In these, with all the kit (plus spare bikes supplied by Ribble), key staff travelled to Brest early to ensure everything was ready for when the riders arrived on Friday 18th June.
Ride Leaders Mark, Steve and Simon rode with Andy and the riders each day, ensuring they stuck to the route (no road closures or helpful signage for these guys!) and keeping everyone’s morale up. The job of a ride leader can often closely resemble that of a counsellor – you have to be there and tuned in to a riders’ needs as sometimes, due to fatigue, the rider doesn’t always give themselves the food, drink or rest they need. The team of leaders are some of Andy Cook Cycling’s best – experienced cyclists with a passion for getting people through difficult challenges and out the other side without too many physical, or mental, issues!
Naturally, there are physical issues when you ride over 100 miles a day for three weeks. Our sports massage therapists Stu and Rhia were on hand every day, along the route and at the hotels each night, with their magic hands ready to manipulate those muscles and help the team ride another day! They often had to be creative when setting up make-shift therapy rooms in hotels – their beds were often up-ended to make room for the more-important massage table!
On the road, Peter & Terry were chief mechanics driving the Ride Director’s car – there with mechanical and sometimes technical support on route. Andy & Angie were also on hand for mechanical support, but their main job was to provide much-needed water stops wherever and whenever possible. From windy mountain-tops, to roadsides in 40 degree heat – this pair were always a welcome sight for the riders!
The team of Andy Cook Cycling pit crew, ride leaders and massage therapists were complemented by an awesome team of caterers and laundresses – Carol and Sue kept everyone happy with delicious lunches and clean clothes.

A cracking team from French events company ISE completed the crew – Peggy & Julie in Lead Car checking the route, Hugues & Alex as the motorcyle outriders and André & Antione in the broom van.
Over the course of three weeks, 21 days, with only two rest days, the amazing men and woman of the Tour21 team each:
rode a total of 2171 miles each, (47,762 miles collectively)
climbed a total of 165,656ft (3,644,432ft collectively)
tackled 60 catergorised climbs
drove 4980 miles in a coach
stayed in 21 different hotels
drank 1848 litres of water
and raised… over £1million for Cure Leukaemia!
Amongst many amazing things that happened on the Tour 21, the team were excited to receive messages of support from Gareth Southgate himself, the day of the England v Germany match, Chris Froome, in the middle of the Tour de France, and many other famous faces like Stephen Fry and Eddie Izzard!
A highlight of the post-tour celebrations was watching the video of Geoff’s chat with the one and only Geraint Thomas, with words of encouragement for the gaffer and his team with only a couple of days to go.

Cure Leukaemia has already received 100s of enquiries about joining the event in 2022 by the end of this years event. We will be there with the team again next year, getting them through an extremely tough challenge, and raising the much needed funds for this truly great charity.

]]>Trade charity Hospitality Action is calling all cyclists regardless of age or ability to collectively ride 30,693 miles… all the way To Hell and Back for a week in June to raise much-needed funds to help hospitality people in crisis. The sponsorship funds raised will enable all cyclists to support their favourite pubs, hotels and cafes that they used to frequent on their rides and possibly took for granted.
The event builds on Hospitality Action’s inaugural virtual fundraiser, last year’s 20,000 Mile Hospitality Challenge, which saw over 500 participants combine to travel the coastline of the United Kingdom – and raise over £75,000 in the process.
Since the first lockdown, in March 2020, hospitality workers have experienced unimaginable hardship: lives and livelihoods have been lost; mental health has been challenged; businesses have closed. The past year has been nothing short of hellish, in short, this past year, they’ve been through hell. That’s why Hospitality Action is encouraging supporters to head To Hell and Back for their virtual fundraising challenge this June.
Sponsored by jellybean, Umbrella Training and supported by Champagne Taittinger Hospitality Action is asking cyclists to combine their sporting activities to cover an epic 30,693 miles to virtually visit four actual hells on earth: towns called Hell in California, Michigan and Norway; and Hell Creek in Montana. Crucially, this is a return journey. Yes, you’ll be heading to Hell – but everyone will be coming back again as a team, just as the UK’s resilient hospitality industry will be back in full attack, in the coming months. As an incentive for taking part each participant who raises over £150 in sponsorship will automatically be entered into a Prize Draw to win one of 15 bottles of Taittinger Brut Réserve. In addition, a bottle of Taittinger Brut Réserve will be given to the first 15 participants to raise over £350. ]]>We are unlikely to be running a Mallorca Bike Camp before the summer due to travel restrictions and hotel availability. However, we are planning now for a special two-week Autumn Camp from October 9th-23rd.
Planning is still ongoing for the Cure Leukaemia Tour 21 which will hopefully be able to run in July. This will be an epic event following the Tour de France for a very worthwhile charity.
We hope to be able to run a version of our popular Severn Bridge Sportive at some point this summer – hopefully in August. If we are allowed by all the various bodies then this is something we’d love to do, get back to basics out on our bikes for a fun, simple sportive/challenge ride suitable for varying ages and abilities through some of our regions’ most glorious countryside.
We will try to bring you more definite news in the coming months, as restrictions are hopefully lifted! But we wanted you all to know we haven’t stopped planning for lots more cycling fun in the near future. Watch this space!

]]>I must be honest, as an eternal optimist I was quite relieved initially when lockdown was announced, as I felt a couple of months ‘off’ would provide time to recharge the batteries safe in the knowledge that we had a fair array of major cycle events to deliver at the back end of the year. The enormity of the situation started to become more apparent as time went on…
It’s fair to say that I had managed to ride far more than normal during lockdown due to the lack of events to deliver and the good weather which meant that I took the opportunity to ride the End to End on my own with Jacqui supporting. It was a great trip allowing me to scope out some new roads for potential new LEJOG trips in the future.
The barren year has allowed us time to reflect and consider new events that we might consider closer to home with some classic routes in some wonderful British countryside. Watch our social media regularly for updates and new events as they get added to the ACC portfolio.
In the meantime from us all at ACC here’s to a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous and Happy New Year.

]]>The whole team here at Andy Cook Cycling are very excited to be organising the Cure Leukaemia Tour 21 this Summer.
National blood cancer charity Cure Leukaemia has been named as the first ever Official Charity Partner of the Tour de France in the UK. This partnership means that Cure Leukaemia’s major cycling event, The Tour 21, which will see amateur cyclists take on all 21 stages of the Tour de France route one week ahead of the professional event in 2021, 2022 and 2023, will be the only charity event of its kind with an official partnership with the Tour de France in the UK.
The Tour 21, which will take place from Saturday 19th June – Sunday 11th July 2021, will see a team of 25 amateur cyclists led by former footballer, blood cancer survivor and Cure Leukaemia Patron Geoff Thomas taking on all 21 stages of the Tour de France with the aim of raising £1,000,000 for Cure Leukaemia.
This ground-breaking partnership, announced just days before the official 2021 Tour de France route reveal, is the legacy of Geoff Thomas’ phenomenal cycling achievements since his diagnosis with chronic myeloid leukaemia in 2003, just months after finishing his professional football career.
Thomas, 56, who represented England, Crystal Palace, Wolves and Nottingham Forest during his 20-year career, was initially given just 3 months to live in 2003, but thanks to treatment from Cure Leukaemia’s Co-Founder Professor Charlie Craddock CBE and a stem cell transplant from his sister Kay, Geoff went into remission in 2004 and turned his mind to supporting the doctors and nurses that helped save his life.
During his treatment, Geoff was inspired by the survival stories of others and decided to cycle the full Tour de France ahead of the professionals in 2005 to raise funds which led to him being awarded the Helen Rollason Award at that year’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year. Geoff then went on to complete the Tour again in 2007 and then in 2015 he returned to Cure Leukaemia to take on the gruelling 21 stages once more.
In 2017, Geoff cycled the Tour de France for a 4th time as well as the Giro D’Italia and Vuelta to help Cure Leukaemia raise an additional £1m towards the expansion of one of Europe’s biggest Haematology Centres in Birmingham.
This year, 15 years after he first took on the Tour, Geoff was due to ride for the final time with 18 other amateur cyclists with the aim of raising £1m for Cure Leukaemia to fund the national Trials Acceleration Programme (TAP) which the charity began funding in January. Consisting of 12 blood cancer centres across the UK, TAP enables patients from a catchment area of 20 million to access potentially life-saving treatments for all forms of blood cancer through clinical trials and Geoff and his team’s efforts would have funded this network for 12 months.
As a result of the COVID-19 crisis, the event was cancelled leaving Cure Leukaemia with a £1,000,000 shortfall. The team is committed to completing their challenge in 2021 and through this official partnership with The Tour de France the charity is hoping Geoff and the team can exceed their £1,000,000 target and raise increased awareness of Cure Leukaemia as a leading national blood cancer charity. Speaking about the partnership Geoff said:
“I am extremely honoured that Cure Leukaemia has been named as the first ever Official Charity Partner of the Tour de France in the UK. When I embarked on what seemed a completely crazy challenge in 2005, I could never have imagined that I would not only go on to ride the globally iconic Tour de France route five times nor that our event would secure such a prestigious level of recognition from within the world of cycling.
“Ultimately, the purpose of taking on these challenges is to provide hope to blood cancer patients in the same position that I was back in 2003 and now this event is set to continue doing this after I finally hang my cleats up in July 2021. ]]>Having ridden Lands End to John O’ Groats at least once a year for the last 11 years as the ‘man in charge’ on several cycling events, last month Andy decided to take the challenge on himself purely for the fun of it! With Jacqui as support crew, and no real plans other than to take about a week getting from one end of the country to the other, the pair headed off mid-August to start the journey from Lands End.
“My initial ambitious plan had been to finish in 4-5, using main roads and following a very similar to the route the record-breakers use when completing this challenge. However, the bad weather during the first three days put paid to that idea. Zero visibility on the A30 on day one meant I reverted to the much quieter roads of my Ride Across Britain route through Cornwall and into Devon.
It was amazing to find out just how much of the RAB route is common to the record route in the North of the country – between the Lakes and Abington. I also discovered a great new route through the Cairngorms avoiding Glenshee and the Lecht – something I think a lot of RAB riders might be excited to hear about!
The official certificate tells me I completed the ride in 5 days and 10 hours. I rode for around 9 1/2 hours each day – starting at just gone 7am most days and finishing by 6pm, leaving plenty of time to refuel and hit the hay by 9.30pm. Here are the official stats:Day 1 – 161 miles – 10:51:38 riding time – 12,635 ft climbing
Day 2 – 148 miles – 9:45:37 riding time – 4,973 ft climbing
Day 3 – 143.2 miles – 9:26:40 riding time – 6,250 ft climbing
Day 4 – 146 miles – 9:09:23 riding time – 7,021 ft climbing
Day 5 – 156 miles – 9:43:10 riding time – 7,930 ft climbing
Day 6 – 127 miles – 7:55:51 riding time – 3,358 ft climbing
Totals – 881.2 miles
46,254 ft climbing
30,060 calories
56:52:19 total riding time
It was my twelfth time riding the E2E and in many ways the most satisfying sharing it with Jacqui, whose skills at being in exactly the right place at the right time with the right grub are second to none.
No punctures or mechanicals all trip unless you count accidentally discharging my Di2 battery in the back of the van overnight as the lever was left ‘on’ pressed against the van wall. Luckily I had my Beacon as a spare bike with similar gearing but no mudguards……!!
At no time did I feel stressed mentally or physically and felt that I rode within myself keeping a controlled pace all ride.
As we hadn’t planned stops beforehand that determined how far I rode but this actually worked to our advantage as there was no pressure to make a certain point each night.
If I do it again I would possibly do it in June with extra daylight and aim for an additional 20-30 miles a day which would make 5 days very much possible. A small group of say 4 similar ability riders working together would definitely work.”

]]>We have had six great weeks of cycling so far at Castle Combe Circuit. The wide, safe, smooth track is perfect for socially-distant cycling and many regulars and new cyclists have signed up to take part in the sessions either on their own or in their family groups and bubbles.
We have of course had to increase our safety measures to comply with government, British Cycling and Circuit guidelines and to ensure everyone stays safe. However, we are very grateful to everyone who has come along for their cooperation with these rules – we couldn’t keep the sessions running if it weren’t for all the patient and understanding riders who come each week!
We are also extremely grateful to our team on the gates each Tuesday night – Kirsty, Sue, Mark, Sarah, Lisajayne, Peter and Ruth. Also all our marshals
out on the circuit keeping everyone safe – Mark, Simon and Nick.
If you have joined us on a Tuesday, you may have partaken of some of the delicious coffee and cake on offer at Silver Fox Coffee. The team do a brilliant job each Tuesday evening catering to the needs of hungry cyclists – with homemade cakes and flapjacks to suit everyone’s tastes and proper barista-style coffee.

]]>July 4th will be the 17th anniversary of blood cancer survivor, ex-England footballer and Cure Leukaemia Patron Geoff Thomas’ diagnosis with chronic myeloid leukaemia. Andy Cook Cycling had planned an event with Geoff and Cure Leukaemia to mark this milestone which involved participants riding the Tour de France route one day ahead of the professionals in July this year. Thanks to the COVID-19 crisis, the event has been postponed until 2021.
Despite the cancellation of GT15, Geoff, in partnership with cycling brand Ribble Cycles and Zwift, will be taking part in a virtual cycling event with potentially thousands of cyclists across the world with the aim of raising funds and awareness for Cure Leukaemia.
Cycling broadcasters Rebecca Charlton and Laura Winter and Daily Telegraph cycling correspondent Tom Cary are preparing to take part along with fellow sports broadcasters and journalists Matt Dickinson, Matt Smith and Jill Douglas also showing their support for the event too.
Ribble and Zwift have created two challenging routes for Geoff Thomas Day, a 25km ‘Tour of Fire and Ice’ route and a more strenuous 89.3km ‘Four Horsemen’ route for cyclists with the Zwift app to take part in at 15:00 GMT on Saturday 4th July. All participants will be encouraged to donate a minimum of £21 to the ‘Ribble Ride to Raise Funds’ JustGiving page to take part with all funds going to national blood cancer charity Cure Leukaemia.
As an additional incentive to the event, every person who donates to the page will be automatically entered into a prize draw to win one of three fantastic prizes: VIP Hospitality for 2 people at the final stage of the 2021 Tour de France in Paris, a custom Ribble bike frame worth £1,000 and a signed Tour de France jersey from the winner of the 2021 event.
Geoff, who received the Helen Rollason award at the 2005 BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards said:
“It was devastating to cancel our Tour de France event this summer, but July 4th represents a great opportunity to engage global virtual cycling community and help us raise as many funds as possible towards the £1,000,000 target we set ourselves this year. The day will mark 17 years since I was diagnosed with blood cancer and I would like to turn this unhappy anniversary into a positive by raising funds to help others this summer. All funds raised from Geoff Thomas Day will go towards funding research nurses across the United Kingdom, many of whom have been re-deployed to combat COVID-19 on the front-line.
‘It is vital that we continue to fund our national network of specialist research nurses to ensure blood cancer patients across the country have access to potentially life-saving treatments for the disease. Globally, a person is diagnosed with blood cancer every 36 seconds, so I urge Zwift users across the world to get involved on Saturday July 4th. Cycling has played such an important part in my life since I went into remission and I know that if the international cycling community can get behind this fundraising event, we can achieve something very special.”
Cycling journalist and broadcaster Rebecca Charlton said: “I had the pleasure of meeting Geoff many years ago now and have enjoyed following his inspiring cycling challenges closely ever since; and supporting where possible – it is remarkable what he has achieved since beating blood cancer. This is a brilliant idea from Geoff and Cure Leukaemia to raise funds and awareness during this challenging time we find ourselves in. I will be cycling the ‘Tour of Fire and Ice’ on July 4th and I hope we can encourage cyclists from around the world to join in and ride to raise funds.”
Broadcaster and commentator Laura Winter said: “The devastating Coronavirus pandemic, which has killed hundreds of thousands world-wide and changed our day-to-day life beyond recognition, has put health firmly in the forefront of everyone’s minds. For Geoff to not only beat leukaemia, but to be celebrating 17 years since his diagnosis is remarkable. It is a huge shame he cannot be in France, cycling the Tour de France, but as a cycling broadcaster, cycling fan and cyclist, I am so honoured to be part of the effort to get everyone involved and to raise money for Geoff and the team!
