Dreamweavers Storytellers Who Listen More: Design Narratives Rooted in

Session: Storytelling has connected and captivated communites and cultures since the beginning of human kind. The design narrative is a powerful design tool that shapes how places are conceived, communicated, and ultimately experienced. Through three case studies, participants learn methods for uncovering project stories, crafting coherent narrative frameworks, and communicating those stories through design language, graphics, and planting and hardscape materials. Attendees will leave with practical tools to integrate storytelling into every phase of the design process and elevate the experience their own team experiences while performing this work.

Landscape Architects Upstream within the Florida Wildlife Corridor

This session explores the Corridor Compatible Communities (CCC) Design Guidelines, a framework created to guide resiliency and wildlife connectivity in development. Participants will learn actionable strategies for addressing challenges like urban sprawl, habitat fragmentation, and interested parties collaboration while maintaining Florida’s biodiversity, resilience, and wildlife connectivity. The course also emphasizes the importance of embedding inclusivity and equity into conservation and development practices to ensure benefits are shared across all communities.

Minding the Gaps in Florida

Session: Florida floodplain managers oversee much of the land and habitant within the Florida Wildlife Corridor (FLWC), an existing physical, geographically defined area, per the 2021 Florida Wildlife Corridor Act, comprised of over 18 million acres, of which 10 million acres are protected conservation lands. The FLWC is critical for wildlife migration, health, and endangered species protection. This session will share the importance of the FLWC with floodplain managers, given that it is predominately located within our mapped flood zones and unmapped floodplains. Attendees will learn about the FLWC Gap Assessment findings for key critical pinch points and the counties and municipalities these are in, showing how they impact the Corridor’s Connectivity to maintain Wildlife Movement in our State. Attendees will be introduced to the newly released Corridor Compatible Communities (CCC) Design Guidelines that can be used as a tool by professionals and municipality agencies/staff reviewers on teams working near FLWC lands. Presenters will demonstrate the 5 tools available in the Corridor Connect Tool Box for assessing proposed development’s impact to these critical gaps and other priority areas throughout the State. The Corridor Connect toolbox and the CCC Design Guidelines are the newest tools for demonstrating the natural and beneficial functions of the floodplain that simultaneously support conservation of wild lands, wildlife connectivity, resilience planning, and increased bio-diversity.

This session serves as a soft launch to the Beta Version 1.0 of the Corridor Compatible Communities (CCC) Design Guidelines, a document that is a result of input and committee work born from the first 2 corridor connect summits. The document’s goal is to save and protect biodiversity, resiliency and wildlife connectivity. Participants will learn about other guidelines that served as a model, behind the scenes process of creating the documenting a collaborative, open-sourced manner and attendees will get a first look at the contents of Beta Version 1.0.
