1. The Spring Temple Buddha

Located in the Zhaocun Township, Henan, China it is the tallest stature in the world. Its height along with a lotus shaped pedestal comes to 128 meters or 420 feet. As on October 2008, the hill over which it stands was being redesigned to include two additional pedestals. On completion, the statue will attain a height of 208meters (682feet.) The total cost of the project is estimated at $55 million, of which $18 million will be spent on the statue. As per the original design it had 1100 pieces of cast copper, weighing 1,000 tons. The statue has a Buddhist monastery beneath it.

The second tallest statue of the world is located at Khatakan Taung, a village near Monywa in Myanmar. It is 116 meters (381 feet) tall and stands on a throne of 13.5 meters (44 feet) height. The construction of the state started in 1996 and was completed in February 2008. It was constructed by the Chief Abbot Ven. Nãradã, who died on Novemebr22, 2006.

5. Mount Popocatepetl, Mexico

Located on the southeast of Mexico City, Mexico this active volcano has a height of 17,802 ft. It derives it name from the Nahuatl words popoka ‘it smokes’ and tepetl, which mean ‘mountain‘, thus Smoking Mountain and is also called “Pop” or “El Popo” by locals. It has on its slopes monasteries from 16^th century and classified as a World Heritage Site.

4. Mount St. Elias, United States

Located on Alaska/Yukon border, part of Mount St. Elias falls in the biggest national park of the US, the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve in Alaska. Its height of 18,008 feet makes it the second-highest peak in the United States, following Mount Logan.

El Pico de Orizaba is popularly known as Citlaltepetl, meaning Star Mountain. It’s a striking volcano. It is the world’s second most famous volcanic peak, the first one being Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa. It is ranked as the tallest mountain in Mexico.

Though there are varying claims about its height, one scientific survey undertaken by Stephen Brown, a professor at the University of Texas estimated its height to be 18, 490.5 feet with a +/- of 50 feet.

2. Mount Logan, Canada

This is the highest mountain of Canada and the second highest of North America.  It derives its name from Sir William Edmond Logan, a Canadian geologist-founder of the Geological Survey of Canada. The circumference of it base is the largest of all mountains on our planet.

It has an elevation of 19,551 feet and was first reached by A. Taylor, H. F. Lambart More and H. S. Hall plus Jr., A. Carpe on 23^rd June, 1925. The temperature is extremely low here. On 26^th May, 1991, it recorded a temperature of -77.5 °C (-106.6 °F). For records that is the lowest temperature outside Antarctica.

1. Mount McKinley, United States

Located in Alaska, Mount McKinley also named as Denali and referred as ‘The High One” is the tallest mountain of North America. Its summit elevation is 20,322 feet above sea level.  It was named after William McKinley, who was a republican contender for president.

This tallest mountain on the face on our earth is 29029 feet tall and forms a part of the Himalayas. It’s located on the borders of Nepal, Tibet and China. Though the tallest and the one to attract a number of climbers every year, its terrain is relatively easier than other mountains. However, it is offers the usual risks associated with climbing tall mountains like strong winds, changes in weather plus altitude sickness.

The second highest mountain is sited at the borders of Pakistan and China. It has a height of 28,251 feet and though shorter than the Everest, its climb is more difficult than the tallest mountain. In fact 25% of climbers who attempted reaching its peak did not survive. The mortality rate of K2 is the third highest of all the mountains with a height of over eight thousand meters.

At one time it was believed to be the tallest mountain but is now rated as the 3rd tallest with its height of 28,169 feet. Forming a part of the Great Himalayan Range, it is located on the borders Sikkim in northeastern India and eastern Nepal. People of that region consider it a sacred mountain. That is the reason that the first expedition team on reaching there in 1955 stopped a couple of feet away from the summit. The tradition continues to be honored by most climbers since then.

This 27940 feet tall mountain is situated on the border of Nepal with China. It is also connected to the Everest at its south Col. Its huge south face is among the steepest worldwide and rises 1.9 miles in a span of 1.4 miles. Its sharp summit provides no place for sitting down. It comprises of three summits: Lhotse Main (8,516 meters), Lhotse East (8,413 meters) and Lhotse Shar (8,383 meters.) Lhotse is also the least attempted 8,000 meter tall peak of Nepal.

Having an elevation of 27,765 feet, the 5th tallest mountain of world is situated on the border of Nepal and China. Its location is approximately 14 miles east of the Everest. The isolated peak has a unique shape, in the form of a pyramid with four sides. Of the initial 16 attempts, only 5 were successful. One of its subsidiaries named Kangchungtse and also known as Makalu II doesn’t qualify among the tallest mountains, being less than 8,000 meter in height.

This is another Himalayan mountain which is 26,906 feet tall and situated between Nepal and Tibet. In Tibetan language its meaning is “Turquoise Goddess”.  Of all the mountains with over 8,000 meter height, this is considered to be the easiest to climb and for this reason was often used as a kind of warm up for going up the Everest.

This 26,795 feet tall mountain is also known as the White Mountain and located in central Nepal. The west and south faces of this mountain are known for immense drops, each rising up 4,000 meters from the base. Both the sides have witnessed heroic climbs. Annapurna and Dhaulagiri face each other and make a very dramatic sight. For a long time, it was mistaken to be the tallest mountain.

When translated it means ‘Mountain of the spirit.” This is 26,759 feet tall and forms a part of Nepalese Himalayas. Its long ridges and glaciers allow it to be accessed from all directions. It terminates into a peak, towering steeply over its surroundings to form its foremost feature when viewed from a long distance.

The ninth tallest mountain in the world is 26,660 feet tall. When translated to English it means “Naked Mountain.” It was also called the “Killer Mountain” because it was exceptionally dangerous to reach its top. Located in Pakistan, it is an enormous and spectacular peak.

Annapurna is the tallest of a series of peaks and located in Nepal. It is nearly 26,545 feet tall. Its peaks are among the most dangerous to climb as can be judged from the fatality rate of nearly forty percent.

1. Kingda Ka, Six Flags Great Adventure – 456 feet

As on date the largest and also the tallest roller coaster in the world is Kingda Ka located at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey, USA.. The steel roller coaster with an accelerator was also the fastest before Formula Rossa got underway in 2010. Its hydraulic system commences the train that acquires a speed of 128 miles/hour within 3 and1/2 seconds. On ending its track, the train is at a height of 139 meters (456 feet) and has travelled a distance of 950 meters or 31138 feet.

2. Top Thrill Dragster – 420 feet

This is also a steel accelerator roller coaster located at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio, USA. It was opened in 2003 and became the foremost roller coaster going in full circle to exceed a height of 120 meters or 400 feet and was reputed to be the tallest world over. Afterwards, when Kingda Ka at Six Flags Great Adventure got opened in May 2005 that status was gone. Thee two roller coasters were designed by one company, Intamin. The key difference in the design of the two is that of the theme and an additional hill that Kingda Ka features. Since 2007, it has continued attracting over one million riders annually.

3. Superman: Escape from Krypton – 415 feet

Opened in March 15, 1997, Superman: Escape from Krypton (formerly known as Superman, The Escape) is a roller with two  tracks and located at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, California, US. When opened, it was the tallest but was beaten by the Tower of Terror II at Dreamworld in Australia It was for the first time that Linear Synchronous Motors (LSM) technology was  employed for propelling these two coasters to gain maximum speed. The 676 feet long launch tunnel gets accelerated to a speed of 100 miles/hour in seven seconds. It can accommodate fourteen riders at a time.  During the course of the ride, the track becomes totally vertical for nearly six and half seconds when riders get a feeling of weightlessness, first at the time of going up and the second time on coming down. On coming down the car becomes horizontal and enters a tunnel that has cameras installed for taking photographs of riders.  During 2011 it was refurbished to contain two trains that faced backwards.

4. Tower of Terror II – 377 feet

When opened on 23^rd January, 1997 in Queensland, Australia, this was the tallest and the fastest roller coaster in the world. This can also accommodate fourteen riders at a time and gains it maximum speed of 100 miles per hour in seven seconds along a tunnel which is 676 feet long.  Its original name was simply Tower of Terror but was customized and re-launched during September 2010. The original ride had a smaller tunnel of eighty meters (260 ft) with a hydraulic locking system that could simultaneously contain fifteen riders.  In its case too the riders get a feeling of weightlessness for 4.5 and 6.5 seconds. As on 2010, it was the 4th tallest roller coaster ride and was the third tallest roller coaster.

5. Steel Dragon 2000 Nagashima Spa Land Nagashima, Mie, Japan

The construction of Steel Dragon 2000 needed substantially more steel than other coasters for offering protection against earthquakes. The final cost of its construction was beyond $50 million. It reaches its utmost speed of 95 miles per hour, goes up to a height of 318.3 feet. It can accommodate 28 riders per train and has seven cars in all. The Steel Dragon provides the 2nd fastest coaster ride in Japan.

1. Northeast Greenland National Park, Denmark

Northeast Greenland National Park in Greenland, Denmark is the largest national park in the world. It is sprawled out over an area of 927,000 sq km (375,000 sq mi). This makes the park larger than most countries.

It would actually place 31st if it were a country, just behind Egypt. The only national park in Greenland, it is the most northerly national park in the world.

Around 5,000 to 15,000 musk oxen, as well as polar bears and walrus live near the coastal regions of the park. This is stated to be 405 of the world population of musk ox. Other mammals include arctic hare, arctic fox, and stoat.

There are also other marine mammals like ringed seal, harp seal, bearded seal and hooded seal, as well as narwhal and Beluga whale. Some of the birds which live and breed in the park are king eider, gyrfalcon, snowy owl, ptarmigan and raven.

This, combined with 50 km of fencing being dropped, has encouraged more animals, including over 1,000 elephants and over 1,000 buffalo, to cross the border of their own accord.

Namib Naukluft Park is a national park of Namibia encompassing part of the Namib Desert (considered the world’s oldest desert) and the Naukluft mountain range. It covers an area of 49,768 km (19,216 sq mi). It is the largest game park in Africa and the fourth largest in the world. The area of the park which is best-known as Sossusvlei and also the main visitor attraction in Namibia.

The park plays host to a surprising collection of creatures which manage to survive in the extremely arid region, including snakes, geckos, unusual insects, hyenas, gemsboks and jackals. Interestingly enough, more moisture comes in as fog off the Atlantic Ocean than falls as rain, with the average 106 millimeters of rainfall per year mostly occurring in February and April.

The park consists of 44,807 square kilometers of northern boreal interior plains landscape, located in the extreme north of Alberta and overlapping into the Northwest Territories, encompasses not only the largest free-roaming and self-regulated bison herd in the world but the world’s only natural nesting site of the whooping crane.

10. Excalibur, Las Vegas

At first glance this hotel appears to be straight out of a fairytale. The Excalibur hotel opened in 1990, and has been through renovations the last of which was reportedly in 2008. While it does rate number ten on the list for its largeness, however, some traveler reviews have pointed out that maybe it could use a tad more work on the updating. Perfectly situated on the Las Vegas strip, it’s also extremely cheap to book a room there. You can rent rooms at the Excalibur for as little as thirty-two dollars a night. Not a bad deal if you’re traveling with family.

The Excalibur has 3,981 rooms, in 2 towers, with 28 floors. It also has not one, not two, but several theaters, a large arena where they hold medieval style tournaments, stores, restaurants, a wedding chapel, pool, and naturally, a casino.

9. The Venetian, Las Vegas

It shouldn’t stun anyone to learn that most of the hotels on this countdown list are located in Las Vegas. It is a popular tourist site, and nobody does big better than Vegas. Here the hotels are in a never-ending competition to have the biggest, the brightest, the best attractions. The Venetian is down the street from the Excalibur, but it is a long way, and like entering another world entirely. The Venetian has a completely different theme and atmosphere about it. It has 4,027 guest rooms available, but talk about big, many of these rooms are actually suites which surpass the size of those found in other hotels. The Venetian is a huge, 5 star hotel, so prices for a room start at $163 per night. The Venetian was opened in 1999, taking over the spot where the Sands hotel formerly stood. The Venetian has a large shopping mall full of stores that sell designer labels, and an indoor waterway that is a replica of Venice’s Grand Canal, right on down to the Gondoliers. Right next to the Venetian is the Palazzo hotel, which when the two are combined together, makes for a hotel complex with more than 7,000 rooms.

8. Ambassador City – Jomtien, Thailand

Ambassador City is an incredibly gigantic 40 acre hotel in Pattaya, Thailand. It has a huge, extravagant pool deck, as well as the advantage of being situated right on the beach. It also features four large, comfortable wings with various styles of room in each wing. All together, Ambassador city has a grand total of 4,210 rooms. The hotel is rated four stars, but due to the fact that it’s one of the oldest hotels in the area, the room rates don’t start large at only $38 per night.

So Las Vegas has yet one more of the world’s biggest hotels. Like many hotels you find in Las Vegas, the Original Hotel, Mandalay Bay, had a sister hotel added later on. They are very near to one another, so near in fact that they can probably count as one unit. THEhotel has 1,117 rooms, while Mandalay Bay has 3,220 all contained in 43 stories — which makes a grand total of 4,337 rooms. If you would like a room in Mandalay Bay, they start at $77 a night, while THEhotel is a slightly more expensive. THEhotel has some of the largest suites available in Las Vegas. Mandalay Bay opened in 1999 while THEhotel opened in 2003. Mandalay Bay has one of the largest convention centers in the United States. The hotels are what you would except from a large Vegas hotel, meaning a shopping mall, spa, pool, chapel, and big casino. The hotels belong to the group of MGM Resorts, the same group to which the Excalibur Belongs. Am I sensing a pattern here?

6. The Luxor, Las Vegas

Well if it’s not yet another biggie from Vegas, and a member of the MGM Resorts group too! I guess all the big guys like to hang out together, because the Luxor is located rather close to the Excalibur. It is an Egyptian-style hotel — naturally with pyramid — what Egyptian-style hotel would be complete without one? It also has a huge replica of the Sphinx. The hotel consists of two 22 story towers, and if that isn’t majestic enough for you, there are also rooms in the pyramid, adding up to a grand total of 4,400 guest rooms. The Luxor was built in 1993, not long after the Excalibur, but it opted for a much modern look. Rooms start at $40 a night, and rates at three and a half stars.

5. The Wynn and Encore, Las Vegas

Yes, this is a Vegas hotel, but the only one on this top ten list that does not belong to the huge MGM group. The Wynn stands on its own on all of it’s immense glory. The Wynn is located on the opposite side of the Las Vegas strip across from Mandalay Bay. There the Wynn and its sister, the Encore pretty much dominate the market in opulence. The Wynn opened its doors in 2005, and the Encore in 2008, and both hotels are big, but they have an elegant, modern appearance, bound to make an impression on anyone who steps inside. With the Wynn you get all of the expected big hotel features, but there’s also much more. The Wynn also sports an eighteen hole golf course, and a Ferrari dealership. A room for the night there will cost you a minimum of $120.

4. Disney All – Star Resort, Orlando

The Disney All-Star resort in Orlando, Florida, happens to be the only Disney resort on the list. Actually this huge resort is three resorts — Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort, Disney’s All-Star Music Resort, and Disney’s All-Star Movies Resort, each complete with its own theme and decor. They may be technically considered separate, but these hotels are all close together and the same company owns them. The Sports resort has 1,920 rooms, The Music Resort has 1,818, and the Movies Resort has 1,920, equaling 5,658 rooms in all. At just under three stars, this hotel starts at $120 a night, but is also very kid-friendly.

3. First World Hotel Genting Highlands, Malaysia

Coming in at number three, this colorful colossus is a three-star hotel located in Pahang, Malaysia. It is located within walking distance of Genting theme-park. Currently the hotel is under renovation, but it has 6,118 rooms, and was recorded as a record holder by Ripley’s Believe it or Not and Guinness World Records. If this countdown were only focused on the largest Las Vegas Hotels, then The MGM Grand, owned by the MGM Resort Group would win hands down. Work finished on the project in 1993, leaving the MGM Grand with 5,044 guest rooms, contained in four 30 story towers. The sister hotel to the MGM Grand is The Signature, which contains 576 rooms in each of its three towers. The MGM also has SKYLOFTS-51 two-story lofts for rent. Without SKYLOFTS, the MGM still has 6,772 rooms. The MGM has won several awards, and was named the World’s Leading Casino Resort for 2013.

1. Izmailovo, Moscow

This gigantic hotel was built in 1979 and has yet to be surpassed in size. It consists of four hotels with 30 floors each, all within close proximity to each other. Erected on former Romanov land, the hotel housed athletes during the 1980 Moscow Olympics. The four sections are named Alfa, Beta, Vega, and Gamma-Delta, and combined have 7,500 rooms.
