Is Star Wars Episode IX appropriate for kids?

I had the chance to preview Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker a few days before it opened to the general public. I took along my 9-year old daughter and although she enjoyed it, I honestly would not recommend it for most 9 year old children. If your child is a big fan of Star Wars and is accustom to the cyber-galactic fighting and the intensity of the Star Wars films on the big screen, then you might consider bringing younger children to view this in the theater. However, for children 11 and under, I highly recommend waiting until the film is released for streaming or on DVD so you can watch in the comfort of your own home and have the ability to fast-forward through parts not suitable for children.

As a parent, you need to know that the film includes violence, sexual content, cursing, and “drug” references:

• Violence – intense battles, duels and some graphic deaths (point-blank gun shot, a head is chopped off, and a body crumbles away to dust)
• More darkness and creepy, mystic powers displayed through the return of Palpatine and sith lords.
• More light saber duels including a scene with intense flashing lights that could be unpleasant for those with light sensitivity and could trigger seizures for those with photosensitive epilepsy.
• Passionate kissing between a leading male character and female character.
• Kissing between two female characters, though this is not the central focus of the angle/shot, they are shown in a large group of people celebrating. My 9-year old didn’t notice it, but my 13-year old did.
• Cursing – curse words used include: a$$, hell, and damn.
• References to “drugs” or the Star Wars version of such, referencing a character’s past life as a “spice runner” in the black market for illegal substances, presumably a “drug dealer” in a galaxy far away.

Overall, I enjoyed this film and it was a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy, which answered many questions I had about Rey’s past. Episode IX tied together loose ends from past Star Wars films. I thought the acting was superb, the film had lots of action, and I appreciated the infusion of humor, heroism, and hope. One of the most memorable quotes and messages that stood out to me was “some things are stronger than blood” — drilling home that a person’s blood ties do not define who he or she will become; “destiny” relies in larger part upon that person’s strength and character. Fortitude forges your future.

As a parent, I do not recommend Star Wars Episode IX for younger kids

I would not recommend this film for most children 11 and under, even though I took my 9-year old to see the film. I think this film could result in nightmares for many younger children, due to the violence and darker content of this film, even more so than past Star Wars films. It is rated PG-13 and I believe it is up to each parent to research and determine if this movie is appropriate for their own child. I honestly did not do much research before taking my 9-year old, and I do regret that a little bit.

What do kids think of Star Wars Episode IX?

In case you’re wondering what kids think of the latest Star Wars film, I’m happy to report that it was well received by both of my kids.

My 9 year old: She said she loved the film. Honestly, I think a lot of it went over her head. She has seen the other Star Wars films (most at home) and is a big Rey fan. She has dressed up as Rey for Halloween the past two years. And she was really excited to get to see the movie before her big brother!

My 13-year old: He also gave the film an enthusiastic review after seeing it on opening day with his friends. Out of everyone with whom I’ve discussed this movie, I was most excited to talk with him about the plot and get his take. In fact, I asked him to write a quick summary since he is a bigger Star Wars fan than myself.

13-year old summary of Star Wars Episode IX: TROS

I would like to start by saying that I am a huge Star Wars fan. Ever since I was little, I have always adored the journeys of Luke, Leia, Han, Chewy, R2-D2, and C3PO. And I have to say, the year and a half wait for Star Wars episode nine, the movie to end the saga, was worth it.

Overall I thought the movie was amazing. It was a solid movie and kept the audience on the edge of their seats. At some parts you are frozen with fear, thinking, “What is going to happen? Was it all for nothing? I have a bad feeling about this.” And at other parts you want to rise up and scream “Yes! Yes! Yes!” It was also humorous, all the while feeling like a Star Wars film. I would recommend it to everyone ten and up.

As for the plot, it was a thrill to see Rey and Kylo Ren increase in power throughout the movie, unleashing it sometimes on each other, for each other, and on other things. It is bold and holds many surprises, such as the rising again of an old sith lord, Rey’s lineage, and the betrayal of the First Order in a certain jealous commander.

In The Rise of Skywalker, we experienced places and topics that aren’t usually explained in the main Star Wars movies but more so in the Star Wars comics, such as the outer reaches of the galaxy, sith beacons, and the sith temple. It also had a little bit of horror, like when they entered into the sith temple.

One of the themes in the film was enduring hope; even when you are lower than you thought you could go, have hope and persevere. Overcoming adversity and that no matter your bloodline or background, you can achieve great things.”

Other main messages I took away from this film were to rely on teamwork and camaraderie instead of trying to tackle obstacles on your own. In whatever you do, you are not alone.

In conclusion, I thought Star Wars, The Rise of Skywalker, was phenomenal. It was a funny, scary, surprising, and unique adventure that kept everyone in the audience on the edge of their seats every second of the movie. The editing and script were amazing. I hope everyone loves this movie just as much as I did. May the force be with you!

The holiday season is upon us! If you’re trying to figure out fun ways to fill your time with holiday cheer, Gaylord National Resort & Conference Center’s ICE! has become a beloved Washington, DC holiday tradition for many families. I realized that this is my own family’s 9th year going to ICE! It’s always exciting to explore the 9-degree enclosed winter wonderland hand-carved from 2 million pounds of ice by master artisans.

If you’ve never been to a Gaylord Hotel ICE! attraction or are wondering if it is worthwhile to attend this year, I have put together this guide to help share the highlights of Gaylord ICE! and what to expect.

Here’s what you need to know about Gaylord National Resort & Conference Center’s ICE! attraction and Christmas On The Potomac Events for 2019:

A “mean” theme featuring How The Grinch Stole Christmas.

Every year the ICE! display changes as Gaylord National brings in 35 artisans from Harbin, China to sculpt the icy spectacle by hand. It takes them 6,000 ice blocks and about 30 days to construct! This year the ICE! attraction in National Harbor, Maryland features Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas. You will find scenes from the heart-warming holiday story first published in 1957, including your favorite characters like the Grinch, Sam, and Cindy Lou. You will get to relive the classic tale of how the Grinch attempts to steal Christmas from the Whos of Who-ville and experience favorite scenes such as the Grinch lurking through the chimneys of the Who-ville homes, the wondrous moment the Grinch’s heart grows three sizes after realizing Christmas means more, and sitting down at the Whos’ feast where the Grinch carves the roast beast. The artistic ice sculptures and displays include bright and bold colors, over a thousand special light tubes, and moving elements.

It’s only 9 degrees – dress warmly.

The ICE! attraction itself is chilly, in fact, it’s kept at a temperature of 9°F in order to keep the ice carvings in peak condition. Gaylord National provides a long, hooded blue parka that is calf-length. You should definitely bring along your own warm hat and gloves. I typically also wear double-layer socks (my toes always get so cold!) and a scarf as well as my normal, warm winter coat underneath the blue parka. Comfortable shoes, such as regular tennis shoes or boots, work for the cold and slippery surface although all pathways throughout the attraction are carpeted. High heels, sandals, or open toe shoes are not allowed.

On wheels? Stroller-friendly and wheelchair accessible.

I love that this year the ICE! attraction at Gaylord National is extremely accessible. I remember years ago seeing a sign in ICE that strollers were not allowed. However, this year the attraction is open for families and guests who have young children in strollers or have a family member in a wheelchair. There are carpeted pathways throughout the attraction, and you are welcome to bring strollers and wheelchairs into the event. However, please note there is one section that is not wheelchair or stroller accessible: the slides.

Ice slides for guests of all ages, plus smaller slides for toddlers

Most of the ICE! attraction involves walking into different rooms and viewing the beautiful sculpted ice displays depicting scenes from How The Grinch Stole Christmas. You are not supposed to touch the majority of the carvings, in order for them to retain their shape and look. However, the ICE! slides are a fun and interactive section that allows you to embrace your inner child and slide down a two-story high slide constructed out of ice. You’ll need to give yourself a good push to get some momentum, as the blue parka against the ice slide is not quite as slick and slippery as you may think. Smaller children under 4 years of age or under 40 inches tall are only allowed on the designated Children’s Slide.

How much time should you expect to spend in ICE?

You can stay in ICE! for as long as you can stand the cold! This year my family lasted about 25 minutes inside the ICE attraction. The walk-through experience lasts approximately 15 – 30 minutes depending on how much time you take to view each section and play on the slides. Most people spend about 20 – 60 minutes inside, depending on how long you can stand the cold. One year we spent almost two hours in ICE! but that is longer than normal and really depends on your comfort-level and how much fun you’re having in the frigid temperatures.

ICE! has two endings.

As you finish the tale of How The Grinch Stole Christmas, you notice a sign inside a wreath with red letters stating “The End.” If you’ve attended ICE! before you probably remember their trademark finale is actually something different. Once you make your way toward “The End” sign, you leave the final scene with the Grinch, and make your way around another corner to enter a hidden area. The final section of ICE! includes a beautiful, crystal-clear nativity scene and enormous angel. The true ending of ICE! culminates the experience with the history of Christmas and the reason for the season.

What’s new this year at Gaylord National’s ICE!

There are many new offerings and exciting activities happening at Gaylord National for Christmas On The Potomac! If you’ve attended ICE! before, you’ll be interested to learn that the following are brand new in 2019.

One of Virginia’s most famous, underground landmarks has some exciting new changes and a special, one-of-a-kind tour coming up in celebration of its discovery over 140 years ago!

The world renowned Luray Caverns is located in the city of Luray, within Page County, Virginia. This happens to be the largest and most visited cavern system in eastern America and has been a major attraction and natural landmark for generations.

However, over the years the management team of the caverns wanted to make it even more accessible to the public. In fact, former Luray Caverns Chairman of the Board, Ted Graves, had a goal nearly 70 years ago to eliminate all steps within the caverns, making it easier for guests to participate in tours and traverse the caverns.

Almost all steps were effectively eliminated by 1975, with the exception of the 70 steps from the entrance building down into the caverns. Obstacles to getting rid of these remaining steps included funding challenges as well as concerns regarding safety and environmental preservation of the cavern.

New step-free entrance for Luray Caverns

As technological progress was made in decades to come, a plan was made to eliminate the remaining steps and excavation began the summer of 2017. The new step-free, paved entryway is now open in 2019, making it even more accessible to visitors.

Discovery Day at Luray Caverns

Discovery Day marks the anniversary of the discovery of the caverns by Andrew Campbell, William Campbell, and Benton Stebbins in 1878. Coming up this Saturday, August 17 is the annual Discovery Day celebration in which you can embark through the new entrance and enjoy a special Grand Illumination Tour led by guides in period-costumes along special candlelit sections of the caverns. Additionally there will be evening fireworks and a recital by Jess Ratcliff from Luray Singing Tower, a 47-bell carillon located on the event’s perimeter.

Fairfax City Restaurant Week has become a new annual tradition highlighting Fairfax, Virginia’s culinary scene filled with globally-diverse and locally owned dining destinations. This event is made possible in partnership with the Fairfax City Economic Development Authority and the Central Fairfax Chamber of Commerce.

This is your chance to discover new gathering spots in the community, buy local, and dine at some of the best, independently owned restaurants in Northern Virginia. Over 20 unique eateries are serving up delicious deals and specials throughout the week.

What specials are available during Fairfax City Restaurant Week?

Each restaurant has determined their own specials for Fairfax City Restaurant Week.
Many of the participating restaurants are offering:

• $20 Three Course Lunch
• $35 Three Course Dinner

Some Fairfax City restaurants have created a specific Restaurant Week menu for lunch and dinner, which can be found in store and on the Fairfax City Restaurant Week website.

Besides the three-course menu specials, restaurants will offer special events including: George Mason University appreciation, local product features, Meet the Maker events, charitable giving, live entertainment, and drink pairings.

This is the perfect time to try a new dining destination in your own backyard, plus support local and independent restaurants.

New Fairfax City Restaurant Week App & Rewards

This year they have rolled out an app and rewards system for Fairfax City Restaurant Week. Patrons will be rewarded when they dine out during Restaurant Week, simply by downloading their Fairfax City Restaurant Week app (available for iPhone) or by registering your points at FairfaxCityRestaurantWeek.com/rewards.

With qualifying purchases of Restaurant Week Menu items, you’ll be eligible to earn rewards. You can collect 2 points for every meal at a participating restaurant and 1 point for social media shout outs through the app. Once you hit 10 points, you can earn a $25 gift card from a participating restaurant. You just need to provide your ticket code, restaurant name, and restaurant week menu ordered (lunch vs. dinner) when reporting your purchases through the Fairfax City Restaurant Week App or through their website. That means if you eat out 4 times (with social media shout-outs) or 5 times, purchasing Restaurant Week menu items, you should be able to earn a $25 gift card.

A beloved Washington, DC area holiday tradition has returned! Starting the weekend before Thanksgiving and lasting a few days into the new year, thousands of people flock to Gaylord National to see the annual ICE! attraction, festive Christmas Village, and dazzling, decked-out atrium that has become a signature seasonal draw of Gaylord Hotels.

ICE! attraction at National Harbor

ICE! at Gaylord National has become a family tradition for us! This was my family’s 7th year attending ICE! and the display is a colorful, hand-carved ice masterpiece, certain to please kids from tots to teens, and it’s pretty fun for the adults too!

This year the arctic attraction’s theme is based on the classic TV special “A Charlie Brown Christmas” by Charles M. Schulz. Join the jolly gang led by Snoopy and Charlie Brown, and relive this wholesome Peanuts classic in an interactive icy wonderland, full of whimsy and wonder.

As you walk through and view vignettes from “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” kids will be delighted  to go into Snoopy’s dog house, walk through tunnels and cool passages.

A top draw of the ICE! attraction is the area that has cool slides constructed completely out of ice! Both kids and adults enjoy sliding down the ice slides in their blue parkas.

At the end of the attraction you will find a crystal-clear, hand-carved nativity scene as well as the angel Gabriel.
