While tea is not an alternative to statins, the research is more compelling than you might think. Scientists have found that drinking green tea might be the easiest (and most enjoyable) way to support better cardiovascular health. Researchers analyzed 55 randomized controlled trials and found that consistently drinking green tea can support improvements in your total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, fasting blood sugar, HbA1c, and blood pressure.  While it’s easy to compare one behavior to another, the researchers focus on whether small, simple, and repeatable habits make a real difference for your heart. So, rather than comparing this to a physician’s prescriptions, view it as daily maintenance that supports other heart-healthy behaviors. The scientists believe green tea may reduce cholesterol absorption in the gut, improve how the liver processes fats, help muscle and liver cells respond more effectively to insulin, and reduce low-grade metabolic stress that accumulates over time. Think of it less like flipping a switch and more like reducing friction. When systems move more easily, numbers tend to drift in healthier directions. If you want a daily ritual that helps offset life’s inevitable stress, tea is one of the easiest wins we’ve found. Before you start drinking, do a quality check, as —  just like supplements — many teas have quality and heavy metal issues, meaning you don’t get as much of the good stuff, and you get more of the bad. ]]> Chiropractic care myths https://dmchiropractic.my/chiropractic-care-myths/ Tue, 01 Sep 2026 23:57:00 +0000 https://dmchiropractic.my/?p=10673 Chiropractic is one of the most contentious forms of health care. Millions of happy patients love their chiropractors, yet many others wouldn’t try it even if their health and wellbeing depended on it (which it does). There are many reasons for this dichotomy. Let’s expose some of the various myths so you’ll understand the safe and sensible discipline of chiropractic that we use at this office.

MYTH: YOU HAVE TO GO BACK FOR REPEAT VISITS.

TRUTH: Repeat visits are often necessary because our treatment is hands-on and typically requires a cumulative effect. When working in a physical way with a physical condition, repeat treatments are necessary to train the body — just as repeat exercise is necessary to train for strength.

MYTH: CHIROPRACTORS TAKE LOTS OF X-RAYS?

TRUTH: Like any physician, a history and exam will reveal if x-rays are required to further assess your complaint. Since we are skilled at assessing the physical structure, we often take fewer x-rays than other healthcare providers. You’ll find that at PCG, we prescribe x-rays judiciously.

MYTH: CHIROPRACTORS SIGN PEOPLE UP FOR LONG TERMS OF CARE.

TRUTH: Chiropractic care plays an important role throughout life, so this myth is partially true – we’d like to see you as needed, for the rest of your life. However, we believe that every type of doctor would say the same thing.

MYTH: WE WANT TO SEE YOU THREE TIMES A WEEK WHEN STARTING A TREATMENT PLAN.

TRUTH: There are different stages of healthcare – think of them as urgent, rehabilitative, and maintenance. In the urgent phase, more frequent treatment may be needed for the first few weeks, but rehabilitative care isn’t nearly as frequent (think 2-4 times per month) and maintenance care is much less often. We work with you to assess your treatment frequency and tailor it to your specific problems.

The “TV Shrinks Your Brain” Study Never Watched Anyone’s Brain Shrink https://dmchiropractic.my/the-tv-shrinks-your-brain-study-never-watched-anyones-brain-shrink/ Wed, 29 Jul 2026 00:04:08 +0000 https://dmchiropractic.my/?p=10657 The headlines were blunt: “Heavy TV watching systematically shrinks your brain. One common daily habit could be raising your dementia risk.” On the surface, the data seems compelling. The study was more than 20 years in the making. On the misleading side, like so many other headlines, it draws a big conclusion from something the study didn’t measure. Back in 1987, participants answered two questions: how often they watched TV in their free time, and how much of the workday they spent sitting. The scale ran from “never/seldom” to “very often.” Then, some 24 years later, those original participants received MRIs. The people who’d said “very often” on their TV time had smaller frontal, occipital, and Alzheimer’s-signature volumes, plus more white matter damage. And even after accounting for how much participants exercised — along with weight, smoking, and blood pressure — the association held up. So it’s something, but not exactly a before-and-after. And, maybe more importantly, there are so many other variables that could explain the connection. In other words, the researchers had participants answer questions in their 50s, and then, when they were in their 70s, did a scan. Heavy TV watchers had smaller volumes than light watchers. That’s a difference between people, not a change with clear causation, and certainly not a before-and-after. Most importantly, the scientists did not measure shrinking, didn’t measure dementia, and found essentially nothing in women. As wild as it sounds, heavy TV viewing was not associated with any changes to a single brain region among female participants. The whole finding is really a story about men. When the study received coverage, several outlets made a connection to dementia. But being dementia-free was a requirement to get scanned in the first place. The risk figures circulating online come from a different, larger analysis of the same study population, not this brain-imaging paper. And then there was the part most people overlooked: sitting at work was associated with less white matter damage and larger volumes in several regions. While sitting and inactivity are usually associated with worse brain outcomes, the researchers suspect that longer hours at work keep you mentally engaged, which improves brain health. But we can’t be sure because the data wasn’t detailed enough to prove it. Our take? It’s less “TV is eating your brain” and more about what you’re doing while you sit. And none of this makes TV the villain; it’s just that heavy TV time tends to be associated with many other habits linked to worse health, which makes it reasonable to keep in check. If you’re going to sit, it’s not a stretch to trade some passive screen time for something that makes you think. If you want to protect your brain, a randomized trial of more than 9,000 older adults found that blood pressure control lowered the risk of mild cognitive impairment by about 19% and slowed the buildup of white-matter damage. Exercise helps too: one landmark trial found that a year of regular aerobic activity increased brain volume (it didn’t just slow it; the hippocampus increased in volume). If you’re going to sit, do it with the mentally demanding kind. Reading, learning something new, or even a conversation can be fuel for a younger, healthier brain. ]]> Bad Ingredients In Your Sunscreen https://dmchiropractic.my/bad-ingredients-in-your-sunscreen/ Tue, 28 Jul 2026 23:52:50 +0000 https://dmchiropractic.my/?p=10655 So many sunscreens contain yucky ingredients you don’t want absorbed into your body.

When choosing a sunscreen, avoid these 4 hormone disrupting chemicals:

1) Avoid Oxybenzone

Oxybenzone is found in nearly every chemical sunscreen. It’s recommended to avoid this ingredient because it penetrates the skin, gets into the bloodstream and acts like estrogen in the body. It can also trigger allergic skin reactions. Although research is preliminary, studies have found a link between higher concentrations of oxybenzone and health issues. One study has linked oxybenzone to endometriosis in older women; another found that women with higher levels of oxybenzone during pregnancy had lower birth weight daughters.

2) Avoid Octinoxate

Octinoxate gets into the bloodstream and demonstrates hormone-like activity. In animals, octinoxate altered the reproductive system and thyroid. It can also trigger allergic skin reactions. Breastfeeding moms, take caution, this chemical can be found in mother’s milk so please avoid so it isn’t passed to your beautiful baby.

3) Avoid Retinyl Palmitate

When used in a night cream, this form of vitamin A is supposed to have anti-aging effects. But on sun-exposed skin, retinyl palmitate may speed development of skin tumors and lesions, according to government studies. Why is this “inactive ingredient” allowed in sunscreens intended for use in the sun? Good question.

4) Avoid Homosalate

Homosalate enters the bloodstream and disrupts estrogen, androgen and progesterone. This is another chemical for breastfeeding moms to especially avoid because it can be found in mother’s milk.

Instead, look for Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide, which offer very limited to no skin penetration, and no evidence of hormone disruption.

The Surprising Reason You Crave Sugar https://dmchiropractic.my/the-surprising-reason-you-crave-sugar/ Sun, 05 Jul 2026 08:32:30 +0000 https://dmchiropractic.my/?p=10652 You ate well all week. Then the weekend hits, and suddenly you want everything in the pantry. It’s easy to blame your willpower. Or your social life. But the real reason might be sitting in your bedroom. Research suggests that improving your sleep can cut how much sugar you eat — without you trying to change a thing about your diet. And the researchers weren’t even trying to change anyone’s diet. Scientists took people who slept less than 7 hours a night and gave them a few simple tips to sleep better. Cooler room. No caffeine late. Same bedtime every night. Less screen time. That’s it. No diet rules. No calorie targets. The result? Following the tips helped people spend close to an hour more in bed each night and get more actual sleep. And without being told to, they cut about 10 grams of sugar a day from their diet, along with a shift away from fatty, sugary foods. The study didn’t dig into why that happened. But other sleep research points to a likely reason: when you’re short on sleep, your body tends to crank up ghrelin, the hormone that makes you hungry, and turn down leptin, the one that tells you you’re full. So you wake up hungrier, you crave the exact stuff you’re trying to avoid, and the willpower you brought to the kitchen never stood a chance. It was a small, short study, but the takeaway is hard to argue with. You can white-knuckle a diet for a while. But it’s hard to out-discipline your own body fighting against you. Fix the sleep, and the cravings get easier to handle. Exercise and diet get all the attention. But solving sleep might be one of the easiest healthy things you can do for your body, and it also makes the diet part easier. ]]> 5 Tips to Fight Off the Cold and Flu https://dmchiropractic.my/5-tips-to-fight-off-the-cold-and-flu/ Sun, 05 Jul 2026 08:27:16 +0000 https://dmchiropractic.my/?p=10650 Wash Your Hands

One of the best ways to stop the spread of cold and flu infections is to thoroughly wash your hands.  Now I’m not into the thing where a person doesn’t wash their hands numerous times throughout the day. I’ve found out that virus’ can live on surfaces up to 48 hours, so you could be infected by touching just about anything if you touch the infected hand to your mouth, eye, or nose. The quick fix is to just wash your hands a lot more if you want to avoid anything like that in the future.

Think about this. Children who bite their nails, suck their thumb or put objects into their mouth are especially susceptible to colds. The answer is simple. Take the time to wash your hands (and your child’s hands) before eating, after using the restroom or even before putting in your contacts.

Care For Your Immune System

Your immune system is your primary defense against infection.  Your body has several strategies to ward off invaders such has physical barriers like mucous membranes and the juices produced by your digestive track and weapons such as a fever to wash your system of intruders.

These weapons are effective as long as they work correctly.  All too often, our bodies are not working at their optimal level.  This compromises our immune system and leaves us vulnerable to illness. Regular adjustments can help.

Here’s the secret that most patients don’t now about. Your spine houses your nervous system which controls your immune system’s response. Hundreds of years of observation have proven that getting treated like we want to help with chiropractic treatment…  improves immune function.

We utilize chiropractic treatments and back pain relief therapy to ensure that your spine and back are in alignment. At our clinic, we locate and reduce the physiological disturbances in your nervous system.

With a strong and healthy immune system, your body is equipped to fight off germs and viruses during cold and flu season. Again I know bad germs are bad germs, but I want you to know that not all germs are bad. Chiropractic adjustments can help your immune system function at it’s highest level.

Take Supplemental Vitamin D3 with Vitamin K

During spring, summer and even autumn, we are outside more often working in the yard, swimming, playing at the park or just out for a walk.  These outside activities give our bodies a chance to soak up Vitamin D3 from the sun’s rays.

Research shows that Vitamin D3 (taken with Vitamin K to ensure its effectivness) increases immune system function – helping us to fight off the viruses and bacteria that cause all sorts of colds and flu symptoms.  During the winter, add a dose of Vitamin D3 to your daily supplements.  To find the correct dosage, multiply your weight by 35.

Stay Active: Use Exercise to Fight Colds and Flu

Just because it’s you don’t feel bad or sick doesn’t mean that you should forget about your immune system and nervous system. There are a lot of germs going around, but if you have a healthy immune system, you really don’t have much to worry about.

Here’s the best thing to do. Set a goal to try to get 30 minutes of exercise 3-4 times each week.

Eat Well to Be Well: Fight Off Colds and Flu Through Your Diet

Eating right is a big part of keeping your body and immune system functioning at its best. You can even sprinkle on some sesame seeds or add in a red bell pepper to soups and pasta dishes.

Drink green tea instead of your morning joe and add in some yogurt or take a daily dose of probiotics which are natural bacterial that can help to ward off attackers.

We specialize in back alignment and chiropractic care to improve your spine and immune system health.

Most People Are Wrong… https://dmchiropractic.my/most-people-are-wrong/ Mon, 01 Jun 2026 08:18:58 +0000 https://dmchiropractic.my/?p=10647 There is a common misconception that chiropractic care is for after accidents or is just for back pain. Chiropractic care can be extremely helpful after accidents and for back pain, but the benefits of chiropractic go far beyond that.

Chiropractic care is a form of preventative health care which encompasses all of the body’s systems. The goal of chiropractic care is to make sure your body is functioning properly to prevent disease from occurring.

The savings that result from a preventative form of health care are substantial – it may reduce or eliminate the need for surgery, medication or lost time at work in addition to the emotional stress caused by pain and illness.

All people from birth to old age benefit from chiropractic care due to the stress we put on our bodies on a daily basis by simply performing normal activities.

Our bodies labor continuously just to overcome gravity!

Most people don’t realize that they have nerve interference, or they may not think a chiropractic adjustment could be beneficial because they don’t have PAIN, but that is totally incorrect. Chiropractors are educated to detect subluxations (misalignments) and you may find unexpected relief for various ailments through regular care.

Chiropractic care can be helpful for:

  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Immune System Boosting
  • Arthritis
  • Birth trauma
  • Breech pregnancy
  • Pains associated with pregnancy
  • Sciatica
  • Scoliosis
  • Fibro Myalgia
  • Insomnia
  • Ear aches
  • Allergies
  • This is list does not come close to encompassing what chiropractic care can help!

Chiropractic care helps the body work at peak performance.

We do not cure diseases through spinal adjustments, but rather remove the interference caused by misalignments in your spine which allows the body to do what it was designed to do… Heal itself!

Why Do People Get Sick? https://dmchiropractic.my/why-do-people-get-sick/ Mon, 01 Jun 2026 08:14:08 +0000 https://dmchiropractic.my/?p=10645 Every young child learns that Thomas Edison invented the light bulb. Yet, few people in the U.S.A. know who discovered chiropractic.

But more fascinating than that is why was chiropractic discovered.

It came about in 1895, so take yourself back over a hundred years ago to a time when “patent medicines” flourished.

These were often sold as cure alls whose active ingredients were usually alcohol, cocaine, arsenic and a host of other dangerous substances.

In the midst of all of this, a healer, experimenter and freethinker by the name of Daniel David Palmer in Davenport, Iowa asked a simple question:

“I desired to know why one person was ailing and his associate eating at the same table, working in the same shop was not. Why? What difference was there in the two persons that caused one to have pneumonia, catarrh, typhoid or rheumatism, while his partner, similarly situated, escaped? Why?”

At a time when germs were given the blame for virtually every disease, this was a groundbreaking way of framing the question about health.

Germs alone couldn’t be the cause of disease,
otherwise everyone would get sick.

Chiropractic came into existence soon afterwards.

D.D. Palmer discovered that it’s smarter to look at the person with the disease, rather than the disease in the person. Revolutionary then – and still revolutionary!

“Chiropractic embraces the science of life, the knowledge of how organisms act in health and disease, and also the art of adjusting the neuroskeleton.”  – Daniel David Palmer

Tips for Runners to Prevent Injury https://dmchiropractic.my/tips-for-runners-to-prevent-injury/ Sun, 03 May 2026 23:23:38 +0000 https://dmchiropractic.my/?p=10642 For runners, chiropractic can be used for injury prevention because it emphasizes proper alignment of the spine and pelvis. Here are some tips to help running-related injuries:

STEP ONE: Search for misalignment.

Malalignment of the spine can cause unnecessary tension on one particular body part versus an equal distribution of pressure. It’s very important to make sure the pelvis is in as perfect alignment as it can be. Otherwise, it will continue to wear, tear, and put strain on that one particular body part.

Major causes of improper alignment include running in the same direction on the same course every day; running often slanted surfaces, such as a beach; and not replacing shoes every few hundred miles.

STEP TWO: Fix training errors that cause misalignment:

  • Vary your running surface—pavement, track, asphalt, grass, dirt, wood chips—a few times a week, and you’ll naturally run on different courses.
  • Run as close to the water as possible when on the beach, as the sand tends to be more flat there.
  • Buy two of the same type of running shoes, and switch between the pairs.

STEP THREE: Be conscious of your posture and movements:

There’s a lot that contributes to improper spine or pelvic alignment, and sometimes it has nothing to do with running. It may have do with a day job, where you sit in one particular position all day and then go for a run. The muscles are in a state of tightness on one side and are lengthened on the other, and then you go for a run and your pelvis shifts.

Switch positions and seats, if possible, every 30 minutes during the day. Varied posture remains the best posture, so cross your left leg, then a half-hour later, cross your right leg; sit on top of your ankle, sit straight, and even slouch.

Move dynamically before running to prepare the body with warm-up moves such as lunges, leg and arm swings and pelvic rocking. Don’t stretch before the run because it de-activates the muscles you want active to propel you forward. But it’s hazardous not to stretch. Do it after you run, but it doesn’t have to be immediately after—you can do it later in the day

The Hobbies Linked to a Sharper Brain (20 Years of Research Agrees) https://dmchiropractic.my/the-hobbies-linked-to-a-sharper-brain-20-years-of-research-agrees/ Sun, 03 May 2026 23:10:45 +0000 https://dmchiropractic.my/?p=10640 People spend a lot of time optimizing for brain health in complicated ways: tracking sleep scores, cycling nootropics, or stressing about omega-3 ratios. Meanwhile, one of the most consistent findings in cognitive aging research involves something far less technical. Reading, playing board games, picking up a musical instrument, and dancing are each associated with a meaningfully lower dementia risk, a finding that has held up across more than 2 million people and 2 decades of follow-up research. The evidence began to accumulate in 2003, when researchers tracked leisure habits and dementia outcomes. People who were more mentally active were significantly less likely to develop dementia over the follow-up period, and that held true even after accounting for age, education, and existing health conditions. That study became a foundation.  A 2022 meta-analysis then analyzed 38 studies across more than 2 million participants and found that leisure activities were associated with a 23% lower risk of all-cause dementia and a 34% lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease specifically. Mental engagement appears to build your cognitive reserve, the same way strength training builds a buffer against muscle loss. You’re giving your brain more to work with when it needs it. The research is observational, so causation isn’t established. And some researchers argue that early cognitive decline might lead people to disengage from stimulating activities first, thereby amplifying the apparent association. Also, no single activity type is the full answer. The most protective pattern in the research combines cognitive engagement, physical activity, and social connection. If you’re already doing any of these things regularly, that counts more than you might think. If not, the barrier to entry is lower than most health advice: a few hours a week of something that genuinely engages your mind could be what protects it as you age. ]]>
