The transfer in ownership of a Zelienople landmark has happened earlier than expected.

Zelienople Borough Manager Don Pepe says the Kaufman House will soon be owned by local developer and businessman Patrick Boylan.

The borough had put the property out to bid and only received the bid from Boylan, so the decision was made to move forward with the sale. Zelienople will receive about $350,000 upon finalization of the agreement, which was the amount spent on the project by the borough. Pepe says renovations to over 60 percent of the building’s infrastructure are rapidly nearing completion.

The newly renovated facility is expected to open sometime this summer, possibly by July.

Last spring, Zelienople Borough purchased the South Main Street building with the goal of refurbishing the structure and re-opening it as a restaurant and bar on the first floor, and offices and meeting rooms on the upper floors. The Kaufman House was built in the early 20th century under a different name and was known by many as the premier hotel between Pittsburgh and Erie.

It closed several years ago following a fire.

The Mars Area School District Middle School renovation project is moving ahead after bids were awarded to contractors during a special meeting Monday.

The overall project has a budget of nearly $15.4 million, including over $4 million in HVAC improvements, over $3 million in general construction, over $2 million in roofing repairs, and over $1 million in electrical work. Bids were awarded to Tomlyn Construction (general construction), Pennsylvania Roofing Systems Inc. (roofing), Bova Corporation (food service equipment), Vrabel Plumbing Co. LLC (plumbing), D&G Mechanical Inc. (HVAC) and A-1 Electric Inc. (electrical).

The project will be completed in five phases, the first of which will begin immediately following the conclusion of the current school year. Doing the work this way allows 27 classrooms and other instructional spaces available for teachers and students when school starts back up in the fall with the majority of remaining construction taking place after school.

Phase #1 of the project will include renovations to six classrooms (in the northern portion of the seventh grade wing) as well as wall demolition, floor installation, and light fixture replacement in all specialized classrooms and throughout the building. Work will also include the installation of a new floor and new lighting in the gymnasium; the raising of the floor in the Commons (cafeteria); and renovations to expand the kitchen/cafeteria serving area and the school’s LGI (Large Group Instruction) Room.

The guidance and nurse’s offices will be moved to the front of the building near the main office. The technology education classroom will be expanded into existing space; the school’s art and family and consumer science classrooms will be relocated and enlarged; and classrooms will be dedicated for “maker” and robotics labs.

Phase #2 (to be completed Sept. 10-Oct. 1) will include renovations to the remaining seventh grade classrooms; Phase #3 (Oct. 1-22), the northern classrooms in the eighth grade wing; Phase #4 (Oct. 22-Nov. 12), the remaining eighth grade classrooms; and Phase #5 (Nov. 12-Dec. 12), the remaining classrooms in the southwest corner of the building.

The Mars Area School Board will host a public meeting to update the community about the renovation project at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14, at the district’s Administration Office (545 Route 228, Mars).

For more information, call (724) 625-1518.

No one was injured as a result of a fire in Center Township Monday afternoon that destroyed a barn.

Firefighters were alerted to a fully involved barn fire at 455 West Sunbury Road (Rt 308 just north of Holyoke Rd) about 12:15 p.m.

Assistant Chief Mike Pflugh of the Unionville Volunteer Fire Company was among those to arrive first on the scene:

“Mainly what was in the structure was a tractor, quad runner, generator, miscellaneous farm equipment, and it housed some goats and chickens, and such that they were all able to escape, except for like a couple ducks but most of the livestock was able to escape.”

Unionville was joined by Oneida Valley, West Sunbury, and Prospect Fire Departments as well as Butler Ambulance.

According to Pflugh, the structure was insured and the total amount of the loss was around $150,000.

“Cause is undetermined. Talked to the State Police Fire Marshal. They said just to leave it undetermined until the insurance companies look at it and then they decide what they want to determine the cause as.”

That scene was cleared by 2 p.m.

The Butler County Humane Society in Connoquenessing has reopened following a two-week closure to quarantine and disinfect after exposure to a dangerous- and many times lethal- canine virus.

Executive Director Jennifer DiCuccio said several dogs tested positive for the canine parvovirus.

“The animals that were affected by the virus are animals that come in stray or abandoned, but they’re all back now and everybody survived, thankfully,” she said Wednesday. “We were extremely proactive in catching it early because they were able to get to the vet and get treatment, which is extremely important.”

The virus attacks the dog’s intestinal system and can cause vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss and lack of appetite.

DiCuccio said the local community did step up and help the shelter in a big way during their closure.

“The community support has been overwhelming,” she said. “The biggest need right now is financial.”

The shelter is currently at maximum capacity because the shelter was unable to process adoptions while they’ve been closed.

The shelter has new hours through June 1:

Monday & Tuesday- Closed

Wednesday-Friday- 11am-5pm

Satuurday-Sunday- 10am to 5pm

The man accused of a kidnapping on Thursday in Slippery Rock and then arson on Friday in Westmoreland County was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound following a police chase.

State police had been searching for 52-year-old John O’Leary of Munhall for allegedly kidnapping a woman at gunpoint Thursday at the Slippery Rock Campground in Worth Township. The woman did manage to escape.

Police believe O’Leary then set the woman’s Irwin home on fire on Friday afternoon. No one was hurt.

Authorities spotted O’Leary late Friday afternoon in the Greenfield area of Pittsburgh. Police say he either crashed his car during the police chase and then shot himself, or died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound before crashing his car.

O’Leary had previously served 10 to 20 years for criminal homicide in the 80s.

A number of candidates have come forward saying they want to be the one to fill State Representative Brian Ellis’ seat.

Both the Democratic and Republican parties of Butler County will be responsible for their own nomination processes to pick a candidate. The two candidates will then go up against each other in the special election, which has been set for this year’s primary election on May 21.

On the Democratic side, two candidates have come forward so far- Sam Doctor and Chris Kubiak. Doctor ran for the seat last year and lost to Ellis.

As for the republicans, Marci Mustello has announced her intention to run for the seat. She currently works for U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly of Butler.

Gregory Walter of Fenelton is also seeking the republican nomination. He is a local businessman and veteran.

Ellis resigned from his 11th district house seat on Monday amid sexual assault allegations. He has not been charged.

The South Butler County School District Superintendent David Foley wants to rename the district.

“I think most people in the South Butler County School District identify by the term Knoch and its primarily though our sports programs that the word Knoch is used. We travel to other places and people say ‘we’re South Butler County School District’ and we inevitably get to ‘oh, we’re Knoch High School’ ‘oh, I know what you mean now.”

Aside from getting the entire district under one name, Foley sees the name change as a way for the district to move forward.

“We started talking about this concept because of the need to move forward in our district. By that I mean we need to get past some of the challenges that we’ve had here in the district and I believe that starting with the naming of the school district might get us to start thinking and looking forward. We’re doing a lot of great things in the school district. We have excellent teachers. We have a board who cares about our programs and our students.”

Foley brought up the idea at Wednesday’s school board meeting, which started discussions. He has also contacted the Pennsylvania Department of Education to see what steps would need to be done in order to make this change.
