This year was a life-changing year. Life-Changing-Year! When I went back and looked at everything that did happen, yes indeed, I was blessed, but there were some valley experiences for sure. When I look back on the previous years, this was a slower year, but definitely impactful. Let’s start with the Good.

2025: The Good

Started my 2025 in Ghana (& my Birthday 1/2) – It was the best way to start my year, and I will never forget my experience. On my actual birthday, I was able to visit the slave river and place my hands in the water of the river where our enslaved ancestors took their last bath before they were sent to the slave dungeons.

I published my 5th book. My Vision Board. It’s available on Amazon. If you know me personally or have followed me for any length of time, I’m big on following your dreams, working towards your goals, and manifesting your desire. Last year, I had some friends over to goal plan for 2025 (1st pic below), I bought them a book, and we ended up creating a book instead of working on our boards …. and when they left, my idea for a Vision Board book was sparked. So, I created it (2nd pic).

Influencer coins – I was able to be an influencer/affiliate for

More good things:

  • My oldest was allowed to be a moderator and interview the famous influencer, Keith Lee. We also got to meet him at a meet and greet.
  • Chris Brown concert – AMAZING!!
  • Brandy & Monica concert – Just as amazing!!
  • Attended the Florida Classic for the first time
  • Attended the Tampa Bucs vs. Atlanta Falcons game
  • 3 speaking engagements
  • Tracked my ancestry back 8 generations through my mother’s father’s mother’s line.
  • Also, I took the Ancestry DNA test to find out all the countries where I’m from. ( I will do a post about it soon)
  • Had two posts go viral (Chris Brown post) and (Suitcase post tiktok)
  • Gave away suitcases for The Knighten Group and raised thousands for teens aging out of fostercare.

2025 The Bad & Life-Changing Event

In August, my family went on a cruise to Key West and Cozumel. It was something we were all excited and ready for. It was a good but busy Summer for my children, and this was the last BIG thing they were looking forward to before starting school the following Monday.

In the picture above, we were in Key West, FL. This was day 2 of our cruise and our first stop. I loved Key West. It was a quick visit, but we toured the city, ate at a few places, and vowed to return to spend the weekend. When we got back on the boat, I told my husband to call his dad because the next day we would be at sea and wouldn’t be able to talk to anyone for 3 days. At first, he didn’t want to do it, but I said, “Just call and say Hi, and we will talk to him in a few days.” He called him, and I called my mom. When he called his dad, he was out to eat with his mom and his best friend. They had a good, quick convo and said his famous, “Have a good time and I will see you when you get back, SONNY BOY!”

The next morning, while we were at sea, my father-in-law had died in his sleep. It was 5 days from his 74th birthday.

My husband happened to turn on his phone that afternoon to send a business email and found out he had so many messages to call him! He then learned about his father. We still had 3 days to go on that cruise. We could not get off. You could imagine what those 3 days and 2 nights were like. We told our children and made the best of it.

Once we got back home, of course, funeral arrangements started, and the reality of who was going to take care of his mother, who had been showing early signs of dementia for almost 2 years. She started living with us. The entire experience has been life-changing. My husband lost his father who he was very close to, and to a degree, lost his mother because she is not the same, in addition to taking care of her.

It’s been a real adjustment in our house in many different ways. We are still working through things, including our living situation, because our current home is not big enough for all of us. My youngest has literally lost his room and has to now share his room with his big brother. So if you pray, please pray for us.

So life from August to now has been a shift. When we returned from the cruise, school was starting, my daughter is in her senior year (you already know how that can be), my youngest started a new school, and my oldest was now back home living with us as he started his Jr. year of college. It’s been an adjustment as well as a mental adjustment for me. I felt, although I was still moving through life because I had to keep moving … I wasn’t moving at the pace I was, or planned to, or definitely wanted to.

Thanks to my brother and sister-in-law, we will get some relief in 2026 by sharing the responsibility of caring for my mother-in-law.

In conclusion 2025 had some great highs and the lowest of lows. There are a few more things that happen both good and not-so-good but the good definitely out wieghed the bad. Right now, we are getting adjusted to this new normal and looking forward to what 2026 has instore for us. God bless you and may God bless us!

At 48 years young, I’ve learned that glowing, growing, and flowing through life is all about intention. I don’t just buy things anymore, I invest in things that make my everyday feel better. Products that help me feel stronger in my body, softer in my spirit, and a little more put-together as I move towards my “Golden Girl Era.” And since so many women ask me about the best products for women over 40, I decided to share the exact things I actually use in my home that help me stay strong, centered, radiant, and well.

Not just look good… feel good.
Not just trendy… purposeful.
Not just aesthetic… aligned.

These are the little luxuries, the daily essentials, and the “girl, you need this” items that support my fitness, my peace, my skin, my mindset, and my lifestyle as a busy wife, mom, creator, and woman who’s still evolving.

And yes, if you decide to try something, I may earn a small affiliate commission (with no extra cost to you). But listen… I don’t recommend anything I don’t use myself. These are things that genuinely help me grow, glow, and move with grace.

Let’s get into my favorites.

My walking pad is my secret weapon for hitting my steps on busy days. Whether I’m answering emails, watching a show, or squeezing in movement between meetings, this keeps my body flowing without the stress of “finding time” to work out.

Adding a weighted vest to my walks has taken my fitness up a level. It boosts calorie burn, strengthens my legs and core, and makes even a quick stroll feel like intentional movement.

This is my quiet-morning essential. It makes brewing loose-leaf tea feel like a mini ritual, simple, calming, and cozy. The perfect companion for my Golden Girl Era slow mornings.

My instant de-puffing miracle. I keep it in the freezer and use it in the morning to wake up my skin, calm inflammation, and give me that natural “I slept 10 hours” glow.

This wand is a game-changer. The red light, heat, and microcurrent help tighten, brighten, and smooth. It’s like a mini facial at home; my skin loves this.

A few minutes of brushing helps sculpt my face, reduce puffiness, and increase circulation. It’s a small tool with big results, especially on days I need to look awake and refreshed.

This is the multivitamin I actually remember to take because it tastes good to me and works even better. Liquid means better absorption, and I truly feel the difference in my energy.

I take this for hair growth, joint support, and glowing skin. My nails love it. My hair loves it. My knees definitely love it. Also, use the code BERNETTA for 20% your first purchase

These gold bangles make my movements stylish. You can get one or all 4. I feel like when I wear these, they elevate my outfit. Definitely add to the glow part of my golden girl era.

Lightweight, glowy, and buildable – this is my everyday complexion enhancer. It evens out my skin without feeling like makeup. Perfect for the “48 and glowing” era.

My nighttime (well, really anytime) nourishment staple. It melts into the skin, hydrates deeply, and leaves my face soft, smooth, suppl,e and calm by morning.

I’ve used this for almost 1 year. It keeps my skin plump and protected because of the melon addition, especially when paired with good sleep and good hydration.

Non-greasy, no white cast, and melts into Black skin beautifully. Sunscreen is non-negotiable at any age, but at 48? It’s a life insurance policy for your glow.

If you know, you know. Their natural body products are always a vibe — soft skin, smoother texture, and scents that feel like self-care in the shower. But this product is for the most intimate place, and you feel a nice fresh sensation when you use it.

This is my hydration booster. It helps prep my skin for serums. Light, silky, and refreshing.

My go-to first makeup removal cleanse. It removes makeup and sunscreen without stripping my skin. Affordable, effective, and gentle. And try it after you wash your face too, it will show you that you didn’t get your skin as clean as you thought you did.

A gentle exfoliant that leaves my skin baby-soft. It brightens, resurfaces, and revives dullness. A great weekly reset, but I leave mine in the shower and use it 2-3 times a week.

This is my “instant glow” product. Rice enzymes help lift dead skin and leave my face smooth, radiant, and polished. I recently started using it, and it’s a fun exfoliator because you literally see the dead skin coming off on your fingers.

Clean, simple skincare without the drama. This toothpaste product is straightforward and effective. You take one and pop it in your mouth, chew, and brush! Perfect for days I want a quick, no-fuss routine.

Formulated specifically for skin of color, which is huge. Her products target hyperpigmentation, texture, and sensitivity with science-backed formulas that work beautifully on melanated skin. I love her line and have been using different items for years. I still currently use the cleanser, moisterizer, serum, cleansing gel, sunscreen, and concealer.

My hair LOVES this line. It hydrates, strengthens, and is designed to help your hair thrive. It’s perfect for growth, moisture, and healthy shine. Also, I love how my hair feels when I use it; I can tell the difference.

Finally

Preciously Polished

Stepping into my late 40s has taught me one thing: your glow is a reflection of how well you care for yourself, mind, body, and spirit. These products are not about perfection; they’re about intention. They help me move through life with more ease, more confidence, and more grace.

If any of these resonate with you, feel free to explore them through the links above. And if you grab something, let me know! I love hearing what becomes part of your routine.

Here’s to growing, glowing, and living with grace at every age.

Yes, 106 Labs to be exact.

I’ve been waiting to write this because I was so excited about the opportunity and also scared of the results, if I’m honest. Jan/Feb 2025 I wanted to get some blood work done and wished there was a way to literally get more info but didn’t know what to ask the doctor.

Usually, you tell them what’s wrong and they do some basic tests and say, “Well, you look good! I can give you a prescription!” So in March, I got an email from Function Health offering to give me blood work with 100+ labs. I had never heard of them, so I went into research mode. After I found out Function Health was a ground breaking company dedicated to US taking back control of our own health, I decided to give it a go. I had to give blood twice, one week apart, and give 10 vials of blood each time (it is 100 test results!).

All of a sudden, I started getting emails that the test results are starting to trickle in. I was checking my dashboard everyday reading the results and feeling some type of way if something wasn’t quite right. Within 2-4 weeks, I had all of my results.

I had 86 in range and 20 out of range.

Function Health bio markers

Within that test, it shared the specifics of the numbers and what everything means. It broke down each level with an explanation of the range levels, where you stand, and how to fix it or what to talk to your doctor about. Click HERE to see the list of lab test you get.

It came with an action plan: foods I should and shouldn’t be eating, supplements that could help, and even an opportunity to retest again in 6 months to see if I’m improving on the 20 tests that were out of range. Once all of the labs were complete, I was given a note written by one of their doctors in every category based on my bloodwork & results. I can now take these results and notes to my doctor and start to work on some things.

Oh! And one of the tests was a Biological Age test – My body is really 32 years old based on how I’ve been treating myself. My calendar age is 48!! That’s 15 years younger. I will take it.

Function Health age

This came right on time for me because the test also confirmed some things about menopause (I’m NOT fully in it yet! Thank ya GOD), my heart health, and some deficiencies I can now work on. I felt like I had more power when going back to my doctor with this information. Probably because they didn’t give it to me and were shocked that I had it, but they were still impressed.

Would I recommend Function Health?

I would recommend them because of how much information you can get about yourself. I’ve already received more results than I’ve ever gotten from a doctor at one time. In addition, I’m going back in 6 months to see if I’ve improved.

In all honesty, the Function Health test is $499. The company doesn’t take insurance. They also offer more tests that you can add on, plus they now do full-body MRIs. I honestly would like to do that because I currently need 2 MRIs on my knees, but if I can get a full body one and see everything at once, sign me up.

Here is a referral link if you are interested or want to learn more, or you can use the code BKNIGHTEN10

I honestly can’t even believe I’m typing this. Why, because sometimes I still can’t believe that I have Type 1 Diabetes, and/or that I’m not cured yet. They say there is no cure, but they recently cured a woman in China late last year.

Let me start by saying that, there are many people that were born with Type 1 Diabetes and lived long, full lives. I’m grateful that after 10 years, I’m still here. Still healthy. I’m still physically strong and still learning how to navigate this disease. Living with Type 1 Diabetes is NOT EASY. It’s an every.day.mental.ride but it’s a ride we must take to stay in the land of the living.

My Type 1 Diabetes Diagnosis

I have three children. I had gestational diabetes with the 1st and 3rd child. Now if you get gestational diabetes, it’s a strong probability that you could get Type 2 Diabetes later in life. That’s right, I said TYPE 2! My last child was born in 2013. In late 2014, I started having symptoms that something was off. I was using the bathroom 3-4 times a hour, my vision was getting very blurry different times of the day, I was very tired and just had to go to sleep more often, I was so thirsty my mouth would get dry if I wasn’t drinking something. I put all of those symptoms in Web MD and Type 2 Diabetes came up.

In January 2015, I asked my doctor for a diabetes test during my physical. All of my other numbers were in range except for my blood sugar. It was 3x times higher than it should be. I came back the next day and it was the same. My doctor immediately said, “You have Type 2 Diabetes.” and put me on metformin. After checking me a couple of weeks later, there was no change. She put me on injections, no change. Then they did another blood test and found out that I had Type 1 Diabetes. No cure. Life changed in that moment.

What is the difference between the Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes

A quick explanation is, Type 2 is brought on by your diet and lack of exercise. You can heal yourself of Type 2. Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease. Your pancreas produces cells (called Beta cells) that give your body insulin to regulate your blood after you eat. Well, when you have Type 1, it means that your body turned on itself and acted as if the Beta cells were the enemy and destroyed them all. Once they are all gone, they are gone forever. That means you have to inject yourself with insulin forever. So, no amount of eating good and exercise is going to bring back the function of cells you no longer make.

Type 1 & Type 2 have the same symptoms and unfortunately the same horrible things that could happen to you if you don’t take care of yourself. So it’s easy to think you have Type 2. The only way to find out if it’s Type 1 is a certain C-Peptide test. Also, although the symptoms are the same, the diseases are NOT and neither is the treatment.

So, when you watch TV or listen to companies (and people) talk about Diabetes, it’s almost ALWAYS Type 2 Diabetes.

How my life changed

Once I was diagnosed, I had to learn about the disease on my own. I was given an endocrinologist, but she was more worried about my A1C numbers than educating me on what this disease actually is. Counting carbs became my new normal and giving myself insulin with every meal, even drinks (unless it was water). I had to take insulin for anything that would raise my blood. At one point, I was able to wear a device on my body that gave me insulin, which saved my fingertips from daily pricks. The downside to that was that it scared my body when I had to change them every 3 days.

I had to worry about what my blood glucose numbers were ALL OF THE TIME. I needed to be in a certain range. If it’s too low, you could go into a coma. If it’s too high, basically the same thing. So, for a while, I was nervous to fall asleep. I went into a deep depression and couldn’t believe this was my life and did the whole, “Why me Lord?” I had to start going to see an endo every 3 months to get this magic number, A1C. This number tells the doctors how good I’m managing T1D. I was NEVER in range.

I started going to the eye doctor twice a year, and the foot doctor once a year. We had a new medicine shelf in the refrigerator for my insulin. I then started wearing a new device that I change every two weeks, that tells me what by numbers are through my phone. And on and on …

Initially, I just told my husband. I didn’t even tell my kids for a few months. After I shared with my family my new reality and diagnosis, that lifted a burden because I was initially hiding while caring for myself. Then I told a small circle of “friends”. That is something I regret to this day. I regret it because this was a BIG deal to me. A life changing disease with NO CURE. And once I told them … I can count on 1 hand how many times I’ve been asked by this “friend” circle, “How are you doing with your Type1D? How is your mental? How can we support you?” Nothing. Nada. Zip.

Outside of my best friend who has asked all those questions throughout these 10 years. I just felt like if you weren’t ever going to say anything to me out of concern, ever, then I could have just kept it to myself, and they all could have just found out with the rest of the world when I shared it on my site.

Where am I now?

10 years later, I’ve now had 7 different endocrinologists. I left one, but the others left the doctors’ offices for different reasons, and I didn’t follow them. I’m still on the journey for a normal A1C. I haven’t reached it in 10 years. Y’all pray for me. My last visit (last week) was the closest that I’ve ever been. I take 2 different types on insulin. One that last 24 hours and keeps me stable. And another one that goes with my meals.

When I leave the house, I make sure I have my wallet, phone and insulin pen. 10 years later, I still only know a few people that have Type 1 Diabetes personally. I am in an IG group for blacks who have T1D which is great because I’ve gotten great tips and resources, but I don’t know them in personally. I even did a podcast earlier this year sharing my experience because of this IG support group. Outside of my hubby, mom, granny & the bestie I really don’t talk to anyone about my T1D unless they ask.

From what I’ve heard in the past, “You look good, so I thought you were good” so if that is the mentality most people are going with, I guess they will never ask. But believe me, we are not always good. I’m open to talking about it and if people ask, I am quick and glad to educate them, but I will never force it on anyone.

A few years ago, I had an amazing experience with Abott Freestyle Libre. They saw my post online and reached out to me as an influencer. I worked with them for about three years. I got paid to speak and share my story online and free sensors. That was a huge blessing.

10 years later, I’m still praying for a cure that doesn’t involve a pancreas transplant. I’m still praying God will allow me to be the miracle and heal my pancreas. Still daydreaming of days I don’t have to take medicine with every meal, and I can just be as free as the people around me. I am also praying that while I live with this disease that medical cost will come down. Biden had that insulin down to $25! Not sure yet what this new administration is going to do for the cost now.

Grateful

I’m grateful for 10 years of health. 10 years that I have been able to see my children grow. I pray for many more years, 30 plus of healthy, happy & healed years. If you’re living with T1D, my prayers are for you as well.

February is Black History Month. Period. My family was invited to an African American Heritage event held at the Florida Children’s Museum in Lakeland, FL. I visited this museum many years ago, formerly Explorations V Children’s Museum, when I first moved to Florida, but in the last couple of years, it has now moved (& changed their name) to a beautiful location surrounded by beautiful scenery in the heart of Lakeland.

During the African American event, they had many guests speak and perform, including the President of the local NAACP chapter, a 4-year-old speaking sensation Ashley, a child author, piano performances, and community resource vendors. It was great to see so many children express themselves with amazing talent.

The new location is at Bonnet Springs Park, 600 Bonnet Springs Blvd. Lakeland, FL 33815. The museum is 47,800sq ft, features 6 exhibits and 2 floors of interactive galleries. It’s free parking, and right next to a beautiful welcome center that connects to a 1.7-mile-long paved trail. If you arrive hungry, there is a The Depot Cafe across from the museum that serves good food and even has a rooftop area for the fancy folks.

This museum is designed for children 12 and younger. Here are a few of the exhibits in the museum:

Design Park Exhibit

Watermelon Seeds Exhibit

City Play Exhibit

Publix Exhibit

Orange Juice Factory

Sheriff’s Car and Fire Truck

Bay News 9 and Central Florida 13 Weather Center.

Stop Mo exhibit

The museum is also a sensory-friendly museum and designed with all kids in mind. They’ve even created Sensory Kits for family who may need them, that include noise reducing headphones, sunglasses and a sensory toy.

Our time was cut short because we went to enjoy the Black History program, and my son wasn’t really able to enjoy everything the museum had to offer. We did walk around, and I could tell, I’m going to have to bring him back and just let him explore. If you’re in Lakeland or the surrounding cities, definitely check out this museum. Your children will love it.

Growing up in the United States, Africa always seemed so far (and it is) that it was somehow out of reach. It’s always been a desire for me to place my feet on the motherland. The land where my ancestors came from, and the opportunity to actually see where they were before they boarded the ships to America was something I always wanted to experience. Well in 2024 we took the trip. My husband wanted to go years ago, but honestly, I was the hold-up. Mentally I wasn’t ready. I was afraid. I let images I saw on TV sway my view. Then I started to meet people who have visited Africa and its beautiful countries, I started to see things differently. I was ready. Ghana

Through a business mastermind friend, we met Jay Cameron, owner & creator of Maximum Impact Travel. He started hosting tours to different African countries and shared his life-changing experience with us. Deep down, I honestly wanted that same feeling. After much research, and speaking with friends who took the trip to Africa, we were told that if we had to pick our first country to visit, Ghana should be it. Our trip was from Dec 27 – Jan 5. We were able to celebrate bringing in 2025 and my birthday!! We picked those dates because the kids were out for holiday break and it was a 10-day trip plus 2 days of travel. It just happened to be my birthday!

Why Ghana?

I wanted to know more history about the slave trade and see it with my own eyes, the walk of no return. The slave trade started in the 1400s, and those slave dungeons are still up. Today you can walk through them and see the horror our ancestors went through. It’s also a beautiful country with people who have such a kind spirit.

I feel blessed that we were able to take our children on such a life-changing (for me), once-in-a-lifetime trip. It was a 10-day trip with Maximum Impact and every day was planned for us. We had two amazing tour guides, Paul & Victoria who were with us every day, giving us the history of the country and allowing us to experience new things firsthand. Everything was included in our trip, including our daily transportation and flights within the country. Things that were not included were the flights to Africa, lunch & dinner. Breakfast was included. Although lunch and dinner (meaning they didn’t pay for our meals) weren’t included, they took us to amazing restaurants EVERYDAY!!

Here is the list of things we did over our 10 days:

10 Day itinerary

  • Day 1: Welcome to Ghana – We arrived around 9 pm due to a flight delay, so we missed the first day’s dinner and welcome. We went to our hotel to settle in and prepare for the next day.
  • Day 2: Historic tour of Accra – We learned about Ghana’s first president or Prime Minister, Dr. Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah, and visited his museum where he and his wife are buried. Ghana is only 62 years old. He was the driving force behind leading Ghana to independence from Britain.

  • Day 3: Flight to Kumasi – We took a day trip to Kumasi, the 2nd largest city in Ghana. It was a 40-minute flight, but would have been a 5-hour drive. We learned about the Asante tribe and what they believe. They are over 300 years old. After lunch, we participated in a renaming ceremony and my family all got names based on the day we were born.

  • Day 4: Batik Fabric designs – We designed and created our own Batik fabric and ate fresh coconuts. Batik (pronounced ba-teek) is an ancient handmade fabric art. During the batik process, hot batik wax is painted or stamped onto fabric, which is then dyed. After one or more dyeings, the batik wax is removed, revealing differently colored patterns and designs.

  • Day 5: Aburi Botanical Garden – This beautiful garden was opened in 1890. Before it was a garden, it was a sanatorium built in 1875 for Gold Coast government officials. In May 2019, chief Otoobour Djan Kwasi II, called for the privatization of the garden, as he knew it would be a great opportunity to invite tourists and improve business in the area. So many different trees and plants help make the products we use today like; Shea Butter, Cocoa, Cinnamon, Mace (spray), Pepper, Palm Oil, Cotton, and more. Amazing!

  • Day 6: Free day – this was supposed to be our day to explore on our own but my daughter had her own plans. She got her hair braided at a local shop and it took 7 hours. My husband and I sat there and waited with her … so no real free day for us. Her hair was beautiful. I wished I could’ve gotten mine done. We did go to the mall after that. Her braids are shown on my other social media channels.
  • Day 7: Cape Coast (Slave River & Dungeons) – This day was my birthday. It was a 2-hour drive to the Slave River & Coast. We learned how the enslaved Africans were taken and how they had to walk chained and naked to the river, sometimes it took weeks and months. Many died along the way. We were able to get into the river and whisper a prayer to our ancestors. Those who made it to the river were washed and then taken to the dungeons for months before they got on the ship. Oh, the stories of torture. You can see their nail imprints on the wall as they tried to escape. I will never forget that experience.

  • Day 8: Oxford Street (shopping) This area is known for shopping. Get ready to haggle for what you want. They sell everything. I got tired of haggling so I made my way back to the car. It was overwhelming for me. Now, they were all so kind, but it was too much.
  • Day 9: Shai Hills – There were mountains where the Shai people lived in for years. Yes, they lived in the mountains. We climbed the mountain and even saw the caves where they slept. These mountains look like the inspiration from The Lion King. Once you make it to the top, it’s like you’re looking at the world.

  • Day 10: Departure – Our plane didn’t leave until 10 pm, so we went to have our last lunch at a resort on a beach, more shopping, and then off to the airport.

What you need to know before you go to Ghana

Yellow fever vaccine – this shot is mandatory for almost all of Africa. Check with your insurance to see if it’s covered. It was for us (adults), but for my two youngest, we had to go to the health department and still pay about $200 each. Other vaccines are recommended but this is the only one required.

Visa – You need a visa to get into Ghana, in addition to your passport. We paid about $100 per person for our Visas. You can choose to get it for a year or 5. That will dictate the price. It’s a lot of paperwork and steps, so make sure you give yourself enough time before you leave so you will have it in time.

Patience – When you’re in Ghana, pack your patience. We were told before we came that they do NOT rush. They do things in their own time. So if they tell you 5 minutes, it could mean 15-20. We learned that was very true, especially regarding our food.

Money transfer – Ghana has its own currency which is valued at less than the American dollar. That means you can get more for your money. At times, I felt like I was cheating them because the prices were so good. One tip is to exchange money at the hotel. We stayed at the Marriott and we were told that if you do it at the airport, they will not give you a fair trade, basically giving you less.

Bug Spray – One of the main reasons I was afraid to go to Africa is the BUGS! I didn’t want to be bitten by mosquitoes and be all scared up or catch something. Well, the blessing is we went in December/Jan. and that is the time when they have the least amount of mosquitoes out because it’s dry season. I was like, THANK YOU GOD! But 40% Deet Bug spray is recommended. I had the spray and the bracelets. I was ready. My children got tired of me spraying them, but I had to be prepared. Their mosquitoes carry diseases, hence all of those vaccines.

Haggle – No matter how hard you try to look like a local, they are going to know you are not from there. And when they try to sell you something, they will give you the highest tourist price that they think they can get out of you. You have to learn to haggle if you want the best deal. We were told, whatever price they say, cut that in half and tell them you would pay that price. The haggle begins! I haggled a few times and got some cute earrings and an outfit!

Fresh food – remember I said, pack your patience. Every place we went to eat took about 45 minutes to 1 hour to get our food. One reason is that we were a party of 11 (another family on our trip), and they cooked EVERYTHING to order. They make it fresh, so you are going to wait. Also, 85% of their food is organic. Anddddd delicious too! I tried a few new things that I miss already like Goat Jollof rice!

We loved Ghana

Overall, our trip was simply amazing. I can’t even write all of the things I experienced and felt. Just know if you have the opportunity to experience Ghana, you should take it. For me, having a company that planned our entire trip was the icing on the cake. We wouldn’t have known where to go to get all of the history and experiences we had. Of course, we could have researched, but having the tour guides, that came with daily transportation, saved us valuable time and mental stress.

They taught us their language and cultural expressions to make our trip more enjoyable. Now many people are moving to Ghana from America and I understand why. They are growing and now is definitely the time to purchase land. However, also know that growing means that there are still many parts that are not developed and probably won’t be for years. Ghana has a president, kings, and chiefs, not Governors or Mayors.

I am open to visiting Ghana again, but first I want to see more African countries. I want to visit South Africa, Egypt, Morocco, Tanzania, and even Nigeria! It seems I’m smitten with Africa and can’t wait to return. Have you ever been to Africa? Where did you go and how was that experience? Where do you want to go next?

I’ve been using Black Girl Vitamins for months now. I’ve not only enjoyed the products I’ve tried but I love the mission and what they stand for. When I read their story, mission, and why they do what they do, I get excited to purchase, support, and know that I’m taking care of myself at the same time. My first product was their Iron pills. Since I was a teenager, my iron levels have always teetered with being low. Many times, you could think you have something major wrong with you, but then it’s just your iron levels are low.

So far I’ve used: Collagen, Vitamin D, Iron, Hair Skin & Nails, and Sea Moss. What I love about their Collagen is that it doesn’t have a flavor, so you can add it to your tea, coffee, or smoothie and keep the original taste you were going for. The fact that most of their vitamins are gummies makes it easier for many people to take. You can chew and swallow a gummy in seconds. Sometimes it’s hard to swallow a pill, but they also offer some of their vitamins in pill form.

Here is a list of reasons I love Black Girl Vitamins (and you should too!):

  1. Made in an FDA-approved facility and meets all quality standards.
  2. They are called Black Girl Vitamins because the aim is to address nutritional deficiencies common in our community and shed light on health disparities.
  3. All Black Girl Vitamins are DAIRY FREE!
  4. They now have a sugar-free Vitamin D Gummy. The previous gummy had 3 grams of sugar.
  5. The mission is to revolutionize health care for Black women everywhere. African Americans have the highest Vitamin D deficiency in the USA. Vitamin D deficiency is linked to chronic fatigue, seasonal depression, increased illness, and multiple sclerosis.
  6. Build your own Black Girl Vitamin Wellness Bundle online, with 20% using the code BERNETTA
  7. Official vitamin partner for the Howard University Women’s Basketball Team.
  8. (Bonus) Give monthly scholarships to Black women pursuing a degree in healthcare.

Did any fact stand out for you? Was there anything you didn’t know? I love how they started with Vitamin D and now have a whole wellness bundle you can create for yourself. I enjoy seeing videos and posts from women around the world sharing how these vitamins are working for them and how they incorporate them into their wellness plans. What Black Girl Vitamins do you use? Which ones do you want to try? You can check my social channels to see some of the videos I’ve personally created about my own experience.

I promise many times I don’t remember all of the things I’ve done in a year until I look back at my pictures. Then, I’m always amazed at how God has blessed me. Just like many people this year, my 2024 was filled with some great HIGHS and a couple of lows. However, I’m here. I’m here on the very last day of 2024 writing this post, from Accra, Ghana (Africa). OMGGGG!! I’m starting 2025 in Africa. Look for a separate post on that soon, but in the meantime, here is a list of things I was able to accomplish in 2024:

Invited to the White House – because of my work with teens in Fostercare

Published 2 books

  1. My Yearbook of Blessings on Amazon
  2. Navigating your child’s Senior Year on Amazon

Got back in my influencer bag:

Vacations:

  1. Orlando
  2. Atlanta
  3. Cruise to Cozumel
  4. Dallas
  5. Chicago
  6. Ghana, Africa

Speaking Opportunities:

  • Hosted an ORIGIN movie discussion online
  • LFCC Women’s Ministry (shared my T1D story)
  • ASU – My alma mater

 Highlights

  • Took kids to African American museum in Washington DC
  • Flipped a property in 4 months
  • Met Larenz Tate, my celeb crush!
  • 30th class reunion
  • Husbands’ 50th Birthday party celebration
  • Start a book club with my friend
  • Met the Tampa Mayor

The Knighten Project:

  • Cleared out inventory for the year by giving away all of the suitcases
  • Walmart grant (2)
  • PwC Sponsored Suitcase event for The Knighten Project
  • Krispy Kreme collaboration

Concerts:

  • Usher
  • Kirk Franklin

Lowlights:

  1. Our family dog passed away, Kash. This was hard. We had Kash for just about 3 years and it was my childrens’ first real pet. He was literally my youngest son best friend. And the loss was sudden.
  2. I was laid off from PwC. PwC announced last September they were laying off 1800 in October, the first layoff since 2009. My manager told me, our team was safe because of XYZ. He was wrong. 2 people on our team were let go, then the next week …. I got the email for a “Meeting” and basically that was it. My “position” was eliminated and that was that. I did get severance and insurance for an extra month. I’ve had mixed emotions about what happened, but in the end, God has still blessed me BIG time in the midst (another post for another day)

What’s next for 2025

I’ve really been looking forward to 2025 because something in my spirit tells me this is going to be a big year for me. I was going to share why I believe that, but I feel I will just wait as things progress now.

2025 Goals:

  1. Personal Nutrition Next Level: I already workout on a regular basis, it’s part of my life and I pray it always will be. However, although I feel I eat healthy 85% of the time, and do other things to stay in good health, I want to take this to the next level and learn more about what really works for best for my body. I want to learn to manage macros, portion control, eat less meat (than I already do), and just be more intentional about the nutrition part.
  2. Speaking engagements: I already have booked 3 speaking engagements for 2025! 2 paid, 1 pro bono. All of them are in January and are about goal planning/vision board. I’m very excited to be able to talk about something I have done for 10+ years and have seen the results. I initially had a goal of 5 speaking engagements for 2025. I might bump that up to 10.
  3. Finance/Investment Guru: So, I already trade futures, options etc. I plan to get even better at that too. However, I want to take my investment/finance knowledge to the next level. If I could do things over, I would have learned this in my 20s, but I’m here so I’m digging in deep this year. Especially under this new administration, I need to know how money is able to move even more.

I have other goals and plans for 2025, but these are the 3 big ones. Even with these, some things need to be broken down and done to get the optimal result.

2024 was a true blessing (the good and the bad). Lessons were learned, new friendships were formed and AHA moments truly happened. Let’s be grateful for where we’ve been and hopeful for where we are going. Happy New Year!

Oh, and as you can see, I’m back to writing on this blog!

A couple of weeks ago, I was invited to DC by The WHITE HOUSE. Read that again, The White House invited me to DC for the White House Foster Care Proclamation 2024. May is Foster Care Awareness Month and I have a 501(c)3, The Knighten Project that provides brand new suitcases to teens aging out of foster care and fill them with everyday essentials as they transition into adulthood.

I was invited by Stephen Keith Benjamin the Director of the Office of Public Engagement for the Biden administration, and also as one of the senior advisors to President Biden since April 1, 2023. The event was on May 30, 2024 at the White House Executive offices. It’s on the White House Grounds, and if where the office of the Vice President resides as well. The Executive offices is next door (and walking distance) from the White House and protected by secret service as well. We had to go through the same level of security to get in.

Just walking into the room of the meeting was life changing. It really was a “Mama, I made it moment!” I was in a room with the heads of companies like Google, Amazon, Universal Music and more who are doing big things with teens who are in Foster care. I made sure that I networked and gave them my information. I’m not sure what will come of it, but I’m positive.

One part of the proclamation that stands out:  There is still so much to do to ensure our foster youth are set up for success in their adult lives.  That is why I proposed providing $9 billion to establish a housing voucher program for all 20,000 youths aging out of foster care every year, giving them the security to begin adulthood.  I have also called for over $2 billion to help youth aging out of foster care find a job, enroll in and afford higher education, obtain basic necessities, and access preventative health care.

Currently, I work with local foster care agencies here in Tampa. I’ve been asked to expand to other states. I’m open but I want to make sure systems are in place to do that. I’m looking forward to growing more in Florida counties as well.

If you want to donate or work with The Knighten Project, please check our website TheKnightenProject.org or email me at KnightenProject@gmail.com

My son’s high school senior year was a hard one for me.
