Introductions – Alistair Bell

The BISA Committee welcomed attendees to the AGM and explained where BISA was after nearly 20 years as a network for Sound Archives. The Committee explained the extent of the committee and explained its functions and aims.
Update on review of BISA from the Working Group - Éamonn Ó hAdhmaill

Éamonn ran a series of online meetings last summer with a group of attendees from last year's Conference (BISA 2024). Through a lot of discussion it was broadly agreed that Teams would be a good way to meet online to share ideas and practical information and to broaden the Network. This was conveyed to those in attendance at this year's AGM and was accepted as the way forward for the Network through teams as our online platform.
BISA Terms of Reference update – Alistair Bell

Terms of reference was approved by majority and can replace the constitution for our informal network. Question was raised about the terminology (Terms of Reference over Constitution) but it was felt this was more suitable for the informal nature of the network.

Training Programme – Alistair Bell

Committee has proposed to host online meetings in September and January before the next in person conference as an opportunity for training/knowledge exchange (in line with Working Group recommendations). The following topics were considered for online training and a vote taken. The two topics with the most votes in the room are to be taken forward for online meeting/training in September 2025 and January 2026. All other topics to be considered for the next in-person conference.

Cataloguing/tackling backlogs – is AI the answer? (24 votes)

Creative Commons and licensing (18 votes)

Orphan collections/collections with no provenance (11 votes)

How we treat digitised vs born-digital collections? (11 votes)

Lottery Funded projects (10 votes)

Financial Update – Charlie McCann

BISA finances remain stable with £2894 in the account. The conference generated £3856.59, with outgoings of £3901 including fees yet to be invoiced.

We report that BISA activity has been financially supported by British Library/UOSH in recent years, which has allowed us to maintain a low cost to conference attendees. That is required to change, and so we will have to increase cost of attendance in future in order for BISA to remain financially sustainable.
BISA Committee 25/26 – nominations for new committee members/roles

As per the precedent suggested in Glasgow 2024, Alistair Bell stood down as Convenor and passed the Convenor role to David Govier (this year’s conference host). Éamonn Ó hAdhmaill is standing down from his role as Secretary which is now vacant. Éamonn and Alistair and all current committee members would like to remain on the committee for this coming year. Some vacancies on the committee exist. All members in attendance were offered the opportunity to join the committee. Nicolas Melia and Will Rene put themselves forward for committee roles which along with all existing committee members was approved at the general assembly. The role of Secretary (now vacant) will be confirmed by committee members at the first committee meeting.

BISA 2026: 20th Anniversary Conference, Bristol

British and Irish Sound Archives (BISA) invites proposals for presentations at
this year’s BISA conference, which will be held at Bristol on Thursday 14 and
Friday 15 May 2026.

The two-day conference will feature presentations, practical sessions and
collaborative discussions, as well as the BISA Annual General Meeting.

We welcome proposals on any aspect of working in the sound heritage field. As
we will be celebrating our 20th anniversary in 2026, we’re interested in hearing
from archivists, engineers, researchers and other sound archives and creative
practitioners interested in reflecting on changes to practice, technology, and
research use that have taken place over the last two decades.

Previous delegates have also expressed an interest in the following aspects of
sound archive work and research: digitisation and digital preservation;
cataloguing; access and re-use; copyright and data protection; fundraising and
advocacy; and AI.

Please send a description of the presentation you propose, in no more than 300
words, to british.irish.sound.archive@gmail.com by 5pm on Friday 13 February.

BISA 2024: Sound Heritage Today

9th and 10th May 2024, Glasgow

British and Irish Sound Archives (BISA) invite colleagues who work with or hold sound collections to join us for two days of practical skill sharing and planning activities. These aim to explore how we can collaborate together to move forward with this vital work. A full programme will follow, but delegates can expect:

An introductory tour of the sound facilities at the National Library of Scotland’s Moving Image Archive;
Practical sessions to share skills and exchange knowledge on topics, such as sound engineering and intellectual property rights clearance;
A showreel screening of recent learning and engagement highlights that make the most of sound collections;
A planning workshop to help map out plans and priorities across our sectors over the next 1-2 years.
An extended Annual General Meeting will then provide an opportunity for us to agree how best we can support each other through BISA to preserve sound heritage.

Recent years have seen real progress to digitally preserve recorded sound, to make these sources discoverable and accessible for research in the broadest sense, and to engage diverse audiences with them. Many more sound recordings remain urgently at risk from technological obsolescence and physical degradation though. While sound heritage is becoming increasingly mainstream and the capacity and skills required to deliver this work continue to develop, digital preservation still represents a huge challenge.

Attendees are encouraged to come prepared to discuss several key questions:

What are your organisations’ current plans for sound heritage over the next two years?
How does this fit into the wider priorities of your organisation?
What are the key challenges and opportunities that you see for sound heritage on an individual level or on an organisational level whatever your role is?
How can BISA help address this situation?

BISA's Conference Returns for Leicester 2022 - Programme and Registration

We are delighted that the annual BISA Conference is returning this year, to take place on 11 and 12 November under the auspices of our friends at the University of Leicester.

The theme for this years’ conference is:

Giving Voice: Using Archive Recordings to Tell Stories of Lived Experience

This will be an opportunity to delve into our sound archives to surface and showcase stories less told - under-represented stories, for example, based on race, ethnicity, gender, disability and neurodiversity, class, disadvantaged backgrounds and LGBTQ+ - and to raise awareness of the value of our efforts to preserve and make them accessible.

The conference will take place on 11 November at Leicester’s College Court Conference Centre and 12 November at the University of Leicester campus – and we have a wonderful programme of speakers from across the UK.

BISA 2020 - Announcement and Registration

The British and Irish Sound Archives Organising Committee is delighted to announce that the programme for the upcoming 2020 Annual Conference is now online and registration is open.

The theme for this year’s conference is Old Sounds, New Media: The Creative and Ethical Use of Archive Recordings.

This will be a fantastic opportunity for archivists, creative professionals, or anyone working or interested in the fields of sound recording and archiving to explore the applications of archival sound recordings in the creative fields and to discuss the practicalities of finding, understanding and using sounds in an ethical way.
