Pamela Bacharach- if you don’t know her, you should. Practicing for 30 years 15 of them on her own, Pam has made a name for herself in Connecticut’s “Quiet Corner” at 20 Windham Street, Willimantic. But Pam herself is not so quiet- she has an open and inviting style that puts people at ease. She loves any kind of litigation and has built a successful practice that includes family and plaintiff’s personal injury matters. But she won’t say no to occasional timber trespass or probate case that comes her way.

In 2008, Pam, a first-generation lawyer bought her building partly because it was three blocks from the Willimantic courthouse. Two years ago, the Willimantic court closed for budgetary reasons, and its business was moved to the existing Putnam and Danielson Courts, also in Windham County. It doesn’t faze Pam, who is used to driving all over the state, having grown up in Fairfield County. Among her reasons for going solo (although Pam is quick to say she couldn’t do it with paralegals Cindy and Dawn) was the desire to make her own decisions and run her own practice and law firm. She was the only partner, and the youngest, and the only litigator in the form she left in 2004, then Prue, Bacharach, and Associates. Pam is grateful for the training she received there as well as from her prior partners and mentors at the firm where she practiced. But in 2004 it was time to open an office that reflected her, and she did.

Pam’s office is a rehabbed 1904 residence that is decidedly feminine. With chandeliers, oriental rugs, and exposed brick, the office is warm and homey. “I want people to feel comfortable when they walk in. they are unburdening themselves with emotional and personal information, and we try to make them feel relaxed.”

But it wasn’t easy for Pam to get to this stage of her career. “There is no magic formula. You figure much of it out on your own. CTLA and the women’s caucus have been a big help. I was an early member of the women’s caucus, and I brought a small firm perspective to that group. And I always go to a lot of seminars like the annual meeting, the evidence seminar, the one on liens- they are invaluable-especially for a sole practitioner. In Windham County, most of the lawyers are solos or in small firms. There are really no large, multi-lawyer firms. This is a rural community and some lawyers are farmers and wine makers. We have a difficult time competing with the big TV advertisers who outshout everyone to get business. Here, it all comes down to your reputation. My goal is to make everyone who leaves my office, if not happy with their situation, at least happy with the work we provided for them.”

These days, people treat in an emergency room approximately 800,000 times per year because of dog bites and injuries related. Many of the dog bites involve children. There is a strict liability law in Connecticut that holds a dog’s owner or keeper liable for any damage caused by their dog to a person’s body or property. Unless the damage was caused by a person committing a trespass or other tort, teasing, abusing, or tormenting the dog, liability is clearly and strictly put on the dog owner or keeper. Further, if a child under the age of seven was injured, it is presumed, because of his or her age, that they were not committing a trespass or teasing the dog.

If you have been bitten by a dog, it is important that you seek medical treatment immediately. Further, if you are unsure as to the health or vaccination history of the dog, it is even more important to seek medical treatment because if the dog has not been vaccinated for rabies, you will need to begin painful and costly rabies treatment. It is also important that you file a report with the appropriate dog control officials in the town where you are bitten to confirm the dog’s vaccination history and report the incident.

We at the Bacharach Law Firm have handled many dog bite claims for our clients over the years. We have a working relationship with Hartford area plastic surgeons that evaluate our clients’ injuries and provide recommendations as to surgery and/or laser treatments to eliminate the scarring that may occur from a dog bite. Even if an injury does not require surgery, there may still be puncture wounds that leave permanent scarring or which may involve tendon and muscle injuries.

Pets, many times, are the silent victims of abuse. There are many instances where a home has cat or dogs in domestic violence situations. They can not fight back, and research has shown that up to 71% of battered women report their pet was harmed or killed by their partners. In October 2007, Governor Jodi Rell, signed into effect a law which permits courts to issue orders of protection for animals owned or kept by victims of family violence, stalking or harassment. The orders may prohibit respondents from injuring or threatening to injure the family pet. Many victims of violence stay in an abusive situation for fear of what will happen to the animal they leave behind. Almost half of battered women in Connecticut delay their escape for that reason.

Now, by protecting pets, the 2007 law eliminates the opportunity for abusers to continue to put cats or dogs in domestic violence situations by not subjecting them to further intimidation and cruelty if a pet becomes a target. Thirty-five US States now allow animal companions to be included in protective orders: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Louisiana, Maine, Nevada, New York, Tennessee, and Vermont.

We value pets as our family, and just like our children and seniors- they require special attention and consideration. Too many times our defenseless pet are the victims of abuse and violence. We encourage you to use the law as the shield from their tormentors and bring justice to all lives that need it.

Weather you’re talking about fur, scales, feathers, or hair all pet owners can agree: sometimes our family goes beyond our own species. Our pets are such a big piece of our lives that a separation can present an even further conflict when deciding who gets custody of the pet.

Connecticut divorce law currently treats pets as personal property, and therefore, unless specific arrangements are made in an agreement or judgment concerning custody of the pet, there are no laws to protect your rights where the dog or pet is involved. Therefore, if the parties can not come to terms with who will keep the dog, you will need to include a settlement agreement that covers the care and custody of the pet.

If a judge finds the agreement to be fair, he or she can make it a part of the final divorce decree, which can be enforced under law. If the parties cannot agree on the care and custody of their pet, they could end up in a nasty, expensive dispute, and you may be called upon to prove you are the legal owner, not just the better caregiver, in order to win. That is because the pet is considered personal property, just like the TV. If keeping the family pet(s) is something that is important to you when divorcing, we at Bacharach Law Firm will make it important in your agreement and final judgment.

Although generally, divorce rates are down across the board, there is a new trend developing involving the recent increase in young female divorcees. Twenty somethings are realizing that they have rushed into marriage before they were ready or have married the wrong man. Forty percent of brides who marry between the ages of 20 and 25 can anticipate divorce as compared to 27% of those who wait until they are older. According to relationship counselors, there seems to be an increase in the number of confident, smart, successful women who appear to be motivated to get married as soon as possible. These independent, self-assured types of women do not think they need a man to be happy, they just want to live their best life and have it all. Additionally, there appears to be several causes and subtle forces that affect these young women in their decision to marry.

About the Recent Increase of Young Female Divorcees

The first force can be categorized as, too much too soon. The media, on TV and through celebrity gossip, covers young female 20something celebrities happily announcing their engagements. These stars subtle and often subconsciously send the message that if a young woman is not married by the age of 25, she is somehow failing. This fear of falling behind some marriage schedule causes rushed marriages that often end in divorce.

The second force that has added to this trend is that the lines between the real world and Hollywood are more blurred these days. With the increase of reality shows, 24-hour entertainment channels, and websites and tweets directly from celebrities, fans are more likely to expect their own relationships to mirror Hollywood romance than years ago. As a result, some young women crave what these young stars have until it starts to fall apart.

Finally, these bright young women may be losing focus on love. Trying to achieve whole-life success before the age of 30, whether you are famous or not, does not allow for enough time to build a true romantic relationship that works. In other words, the focus on love is lost when finding the right man to marry becomes something to check off on a to-do list.
