The film was directed by Don Sharp and written by Anthony Hinds.

Here at 1951 Down Place we chose this film to honor the passing of the great Sir Christopher Lee. Along the way, Casey, Derek and Scott will talk about what Mr. Lee means to them and to the entertainment world as they discuss their first viewing of the Mad Monk’s sermon. Do they think this film is a small sin or is it a sin worth forgiving? Find out in this episode!

In October of 2014, Scott attended the Monster Bash convention in Mars, Pennsylvania and got the opportunity to sit down and interview a few famous ladies of Hammer.

The first interview We’d like to share with you is with Veronica Carlson, who has appeared in a few films for Hammer. She first appeared opposite Chrisopher Lee in 1968’s Dracula has Risen from the Grave – a film that we’ll cover later this year on 1951 Down Place. She also appeared with Peter Cushing in 1969’s Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed and in 1970’s The Horror of Frankenstein.

1951 Down Place #040 – The Phantom of the Opera

For Derek’s birthday pick, he selected the 1962 film The Phantom of the Opera (dir. Terence Fisher). It might be hard to believe, but when this film was released, there had only been a few film adaptations of the classic Gaston Leroux novel, so Hammer had a wide open playing field in regards to what they could bring to the table. Was the studio successful? We’ll find out as Casey, Derek, and Scott tackle this film.

Well, it’s just one werewolf we saw this month, but what a werewolf! It’s Oliver Reed in Hammer’s 1961 film The Curse of the Werewolf (directed by Terence Fisher). Joining Oliver Reed in the cast is Clifford Evans, Yvonne Romain and 1951 Down Place favorite Michael Ripper.

After last month’s discussion of Captain Kronos – Vampire Hunter (insert the Captain Kronos opening theme stinger here!), the Down Placers continue their look at 1970s Hammer Vampire films by taking a good hard look at Ingrid Pitt in the first installment of the Karnstein Trilogy, The Vampire Lovers (dir. Roy Ward Baker). This film is one of Casey’s Top Five Hammer films. Derek has seen bits and pieces of the film over the years. Scott is watching it for the first time. They may have differing opinions about the film, but they all agree on one thing – Peter Cushing is amazing.

1951 Down Place Declared “Required Listening for British Horror Fans”!

Last week, word drifted through to us that one Mr. Nigel Burton had written an article on podcasts for The Northern Echo, a newspaper in England. In the article, he spoke of two podcasts that he enjoyed, the The B Movie Cast and our own 1951 Down Place! The article was full of high praise and as you can imagine, made our day!

The 1951 Down Place podcast is perhaps even more hardcore. Even the title – Down Place was the name of the house on the banks of the Thames that became Bray Studios – would be a mystery to casual subscribers. Recorded on a monthly-basis each show examines on a single Hammer Film in great detail. It’s not as amusing as the B-Moviecast, but 1951 Down Place is high professional – easily the equal of a commercial station – and required listening for British horror fans.

We three Americans, talking about British Horror Films, being declared required listening for British Horror Fans…by a British man himself? That’s high praise indeed! Nigel, if you ever come across this blog post? Thanks a bunch, your kind words made Derek, Casey and Scott all feel pretty spectacular.

This is the only podcast alive feared by the walking dead. This is 1951 Down Place. This month, the Down Placers spend some quality vampire-hunting time with Hammer’s good captain when they discuss Captain Kronos – Vampire Hunter (dir. Brian Clemens). Can you guess what movie the Down Placers discuss in Episode #003 of 1951 Down Place? Why, it’s elementary – it’s 1959′s The Hound of the Baskervilles (dir. Terence Fisher). Casey, Derek and Scott discuss the film, their own (sometimes limited) exposure to the stories of Sherlock Holmes and how this film impacts their own view of Hammer’s horror films. Additionally, the guys go over the monthly Feedback and they discuss how you can decide the film for a future episode.
