The event, held between 12:30 and 3 p.m. outside the German Club, attracted students in the Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences.

Representatives from police departments from New Haven, West Haven and other agencies such as the Connecticut State Police (CSP) and N.C.I.S. showed up. The FBI brought an evidence response team, NHPD had their crisis negotiators and mobile command center and the Secret Service had one of their limos. A K-9 Unit was also on the scene, and CSP had a boat.

American Criminal Justice Association President Megan Kirk said, “More students actually want to talk to agencies in a low stress environment.”

Career fairs can be tough, as some students go to find jobs and have the same conversations repeatedly with various representatives. This expo offered a way to have informal conversations with law enforcement professionals.

Amanda Belliveau, a criminal justice major, said she talked with the FBI and learned that it is not as complex as one may think to apply and get accepted into the FBI As with any federal agency, physical fitness and written tests are required, along with a background check. To Belliveau’s surprise, the FBI takes students right out of college and has a variety of disciplines that they can enter. Potential applicants can learn more at fbijobs.gov.

Lt. Evan Kaesmann of the Fairfield police said his goal for this expo was to answer any and all questions for students who are interested in becoming a police officer. He also said that Fairfield interviews, hires and swears in prospective police officers and then sends them to the academy. Upon graduation, they start training and go out into the field.

The law enforcement expo offered an educational opportunity for students at the university to learn how to use their expertise in the real world. The event made it easier to answer questions about future careers. In this case, a specific executive order – Executive Order 14399: Ensuring Citizenship Verification and Integrity in Federal Elections – caught my eye. This executive order attempts to restrict the right to vote in federal elections to United States citizens, while measuring voter eligibility and election law. Despite this being the official claim, the president has been trying to create mistrust in United States elections, crying “fraud” despite there being no actual evidence that such fraud exists.

The order would allow the Department of Homeland Security, as well as the Social Security Administration, to send lists of eligible voters to election officials. There was a lot of pushback after the president signed this order. Some politicians claimed that Trump wanted to take over the federal election system that would work in his and other Republican’s favor.

Remember, elections are supposed to be inherently democratic. One Supreme Court decision mirrors this executive order – Arizona v. Inter Tribal Council of Arizona. This 2013 case was a 7-2 decision that claimed Arizona law could not require any documentation or proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections, as this conflicted with the National Voter Registration Act.

But there is a marked difference between this executive order and the Supreme Court decision. The executive order is meant to challenge citizenship certification, while the court decision explores whether the elections clause is able to bar states from allowing certain groups to vote while prohibiting others. These are key differences. The President’s order has been in and out of various courts, while the United States Postal Service has become involved, as well. I believe there would be detrimental consequences if this executive order goes any farther than it currently has, as the administration has done its best to weave its way in and out of the constitutional loopholes that no other president, or politician, has ever fathomed.

The HBO Max series, “Lanterns,” has become one of the platform’s top five series launches, and has secured the largest premiere viewership for a DC Studios series.

As a DC Comics adaptation, the series follows Earth’s Green Lantern, Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), as he mentors a new recruit, John Stewart (Aaron Pierre). In a detective-style story, the two are drawn into a mystery while investigating strange murders in Rushville, Neb. Green Lanterns act as an elite force of intergalactic peacekeepers under the guide of the Guardians of the Universe (Oa).

But despite attracting 10 million viewers worldwide, the third episode, “OutKast,” has left parts of the internet failing to understand its premise and deeper meanings.

The backlash is more than just online chatter. A wave of review-bombing tanked the episode’s rating score on IMDb. Originally sitting well above a 9.0, the rating now stands at 7.6 thanks to an influx of one-star reviews.

By misunderstanding the complexity of “OutKast,” viewers are exposing a disconnect in modern media literacy.

Contrary to some of the negative reviews, the show does not claim Hal Jordan received his ring simply because he is white. As established in Green Lantern comics, the ring operates on blind cosmic programming. In this adaptation, the ring bypasses John Stewart’s father because he admits to being afraid, and it goes to Hal instead. The ring did not seek out someone devoid of hardship, rather it found Hal, whose willpower was forged following a profound trauma. The lines driving the internet’s outrage do not reflect the show’s truth. Instead, it represents the flawed perspective of John’s mother, Bernadette.

Bernadette’s resentment for Hal stems from her ignorance. Operating under the weight of systemic racism, she believes Hal is the embodiment of unchecked privilege, unaware of the trauma he masks. From her perspective, her husband was skipped by the cosmic construct for expressing a normal emotion. As she asks the visiting Guardian, “Do you understand how unfair it is to ask a Black man in America if he’s afraid?” she views her husband being bypassed as an injustice. Driven by this perception, she descends into obsession. The Guardian further fuels this fixation, which pushes the narrative that John must be devoid of fear in order to become the perfect Green Lantern.

The Guardians openly view Hal’s unruly and unpredictable nature as a liability. With Bernadette’s toxic maternal instinct taking over, she weaponizes her trauma to sculpt John into a soldier. She wants John to not break like his father. In doing so, she seeks to reclaim the opportunity she feels was stolen from her family, while the Guardians simultaneously secure a highly conditioned asset they can control.

Audiences are not meant to blindly agree with John’s parents, but they must recognize the trauma that shapes John’s upbringing and defines his relationship with Hal. Viewers who complain that the series has gone “woke” miss a foundational truth. John’s comic origin has always been rooted in the reality of a Black man, which brings a distinct set of pressures that Hal never faces. The narrative here does not point a finger at Hal to brand him as undeserving. Instead, it simply acknowledges the real obstacles confronting John’s family are hardships that Hal is spared from experiencing.

“OutKast” illustrates the sacrifice required to build a fearless Green Lantern. In the comics, they possess the willpower to overcome fear, rather than be devoid of it. However, this adaptation’s strict rule of fearlessness drives John’s tragic backstory. The standout birthday flashback from this episode is devastating. A young John opens a present hoping for crayons, only to be handed a Green Lantern suit and a rifle. The audience sees his father shooting an apple off his head and his family leaving him to walk home alone in the middle of a dark street. This shows what John had to endure in this conditioning is building toward his legacy.

Additionally, the friction between Hal and John, while different from the comics, is not a bad thing. In this adaptation, Chandler is magnificent as an aging, cynical Hal Jordan, and when paired with Pierre’s stoic John Stewart, the dynamic is perfect. While Chandler brings an edge to Hal’s arrogance, Pierre bleeds the aura of a conditioned soldier onto the screen. Working against Chandler’s recklessness, Pierre grounds the series. He embodies a man who has had his emotional vulnerability stripped away, even if moments hint at those walls cracking. This offers a compelling dynamic to the duo, rather than a pointless rewrite.

This friction makes me curious to see how the showrunners will build their relationship into their comic brotherhood. Hal’s fear is being personified by John’s presence. Having Hal work alongside his replacement leaves me awaiting an episode that will unmask the depths of Hal’s internal psyche, which showrunners have promised.

The show isn’t perfect. Take for instance, the tactical look of the Green Lantern suit. Some critics are failing to grasp what this episode is trying to say. With only four episodes so far, audiences need to give this story a chance to breathe. Don’t rush to the internet to dictate what the series is or isn’t achieving when it’s only halfway done. Look beyond the screen and read up on the comic source material to appreciate the full story of what the showrunners are building.

New Haven entered the matchup looking to bounce back after three straight losses this season. New Haven and Quinnipiac played to a scoreless first half, with the Chargers recording four shots and Smith making three saves to keep the Bobcats off the scoreboard.

The Chargers broke through in the 65th minute when Pol Bota found the back of the net at 64:43 to give the Chargers a 1-0 lead. The goal marked Bota’s first of the season, while Gage Estep was credited with the assist.

A little more than six minutes later, New Haven doubled its advantage. Luke Fiscella scored at 71:30 to make it 2-0 by recording his first goal of the season with Ali Taleb providing the assist.

The Chargers’ defense held strong throughout the remainder of the match, and kept Quinnipiac from mounting a comeback. Smith finished the night with five saves, including two in the second half, to secure New Haven’s first shutout of the season.

New Haven finished with 10 shots, putting seven on target, while Quinnipiac recorded nine shots with five on goal. The Chargers also controlled the match after halftime, turning their offensive pressure into the two goals that ultimately decided the game.

With the victory, New Haven improves to 1-3-0 on the season, while Quinnipiac falls to 2-2-0 following its second straight loss after opening the season with back-to-back victories.

The Chargers scored early, with Liam Quigley connecting on a 21-yard field goal with 12:19 remaining in the first quarter to give New Haven a 3-0 lead. The drive covered 43 yards over eight plays and gave the Chargers an early spark.

Stonehill answered on its next possession. They reached 75 yards in seven plays before quarterback Jack O’Connell connected with Aidan Garrett for a 25-yard touchdown. The Skyhawks took a 7-3 lead with 9:06 left in the opening quarter.

New Haven’s offense continued to move the ball, led by Zaon Laney. The running back finished with 114 rushing yards on 17 carries, including a 44-yard run, while also adding three receptions for 16 yards.

Stonehill extended its advantage in the second quarter. Garrett scored on a one-yard touchdown run with 4:12 remaining in the first half, capping a 44-yard, 10-play drive. Just over two minutes later, O’Connell found Torance Washington Jr. for a 31-yard touchdown, putting the Skyhawks ahead 21-3 at halftime.

The Chargers defense held Stonehill scoreless in the second half, but New Haven was unable to generate a scoring drive of its own after the break.

Quarterback AJ Duffy completed 17 of 35 passes for 173 yards. Matt Chandler led the Chargers through the air with four receptions for 49 yards, while Thomas finished with three catches for 40 yards. Lasalle Rose Jr. added two receptions for 39 yards.

New Haven totaled 295 yards of offense, including 122 rushing yards and 173 through the air. The Chargers averaged 5.5 yards per rushing attempt, with Laney accounting for the bulk of the production.

Stonehill finished with 373 total yards and controlled possession for more than 36 minutes. O’Connell completed 14 of 18 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns, while the Skyhawks rushed for 181 yards.

Despite the setback, New Haven’s defense kept Stonehill off the scoreboard in the final two quarters and limited the Skyhawks to 61 total plays. The Chargers also held Stonehill to three third-down conversions on 10 attempts.

The Chargers look to bounce back from a 1-1 start to the season when they face South Dakota State University on Sept. 12.

Their work spans music, film, theatre and voice acting. Parton, Curry and Cullen share the shaping of American art through emotional connection, versatility and cultural influence. Faculty in the Department of Music, Theatre and Dance offer contrasting perspectives on how legacy is formed.

A week ago Dolly Parton, a singer and songwriter whose career spanned more than half a century, passed away. She was known for her ability to tell deep personal stories through her music that resonated with her audience.

“The artists that stay relevant for the longest aren’t usually the ones who chase trends,” said D. Edward Davis, associate professor of practice in the department of music, theatre and dance.

Davis said that Parton’s songs speak to “something essential about being human,” which makes listeners today relate to her work just as strongly as audiences did 50 years ago.

Parton’s authenticity is another cornerstone of her legacy. She built an image that blended glamorous exaggeration with grounded Tennessee charm, a combination that made her instantly recognizable and emotionally accessible.

Davis described her authenticity as “highly unusual in the history of popular music,” noting how she balanced “outrageously glam” style with genuine warmth. This duality helped her connect with her fans “across the country and eventually around the world,” Davis said.

Her career also highlights the importance of collaboration.

“Parton maintained personal connections with and lent support to a huge community of musicians throughout her life,” Davis said.

He emphasized that young artists could learn from her generosity and commitment to the community.

Shawn Persinger, adjunct professor in the department of music, said that legacy is more complicated and often more fleeting than audiences assume.

“A legacy would be a body of genuinely creative work,” Persinger said. “An artist creates something new. A craftsman makes variations of an idea.”

Persinger also challenged the idea that authenticity is essential for lasting impact.

“In my experience, it is not important at all,” he said, giving the example that many students today are unfamiliar with foundational figures like Chuck Berry. “Legacies are fleeting, which is okay. The importance of an artist is not the legacy but the quality of the work.”

He added that cultural relevance often has less to do with artistry and more to do with visibility.

“Marketing,” Persigner said. “I know that sounds cynical, but see my Chuck Berry reference.”

His perspective offers a counterpoint to Davis’s view, suggesting that legacy is shaped as much by cultural memory and industry forces as by artistic authenticity.

Besides Parton, the arts community was also struck by the passing of Tim Curry, an actor and singer whose fearless performances in theatre and film made him a cultural icon. From “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” to his versatile work across the stage and screen, Curry’s legacy reflects boldness and a willingness to embrace the unconventional.

From his iconic role as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” Curry became a symbol of fearless performance for an artist who transformed eccentricity into cultural impact. His work across stage, film and voice acting shows how much an artist can shape multiple mediums through commitment to character and emotional truth.

Peter Cullen’s legacy is rooted in voice with, not just sound, but emotional storytelling. As the voice of Optimus Prime, Cullen shaped the childhoods of multiple generations and helped elevate voice acting into a respected art form. His performances show how a single voice can carry moral weight, emotional depth, and cultural resonance.

Whether through song, performance or voice, Parton, Curry and Cullen each shaped American arts by connecting deeply with audiences. Their legacies, whether defined by authenticity, creativity or cultural memory, remind young artists that impact can take many forms. Note that what lasts is not always fame, but the quality, courage and humanity behind the work.

This order comes amid a trade war between the U.S. and Canada, with this being one attempt to contribute to it. In response, Trump said, “They basically don’t allow banks of America to be in Canada, that’s sort of emblematic of the way they treat us.”

50% tariffs were also added to a group of imports from Canada, including wine, dairy products, cement and more. Canada historically is one of the U.S.’s top trading partners.

Trump’s executive order may recognize the new name here in the U.S., however other countries have not. The executive order only changes what the federal government calls the lake, not what the rest of the world or U.S. Citizens call it.

Many people online have expressed that they plan to ignore this order, and some students have disagreed with the executive order.

Dolche Monroe-Fryer, a freshman criminal justice major, said, “I feel like we have bigger fish to fry in this country than renaming a lake.”

Monroe-Fryer said that they feel like Trump doesn’t have priorities in line with what people in the U.S. need.

Beyond the U.S., Canadian leaders and citizens have taken the executive order to heart. Many Canadians consider the lake to be an important part of history, culture and more to Canada. The lakes name, Ontario, comes from the ⁠Kanyen’kéha or Mohawk word Oniatari:io or Kanadario, meaning “beautiful lake” or “sparkling water” according to the official Chiefs of Ontario website.

Grand Chief Pierre Picard of the Wendat Nation said, “Outraged, appalled, shocked: there are no other words to describe how I feel following President Trump’s decision to rename Lake Ontario ‘Lake America.”

“I think there’s absolutely no need for it, (the lake’s federal name change) and he should be focusing on other more important problems,” said Nicole Rondon Marte, a freshman fire science major. “It’s also taking away important history, which is what America was built on.”

The University of New Haven’s ChargerREC hosts a number of club sports teams with tryouts open to all students, not just those who were recruited either. While these tryouts start as an audition to join a sports team, they can turn into something bigger.

For junior forensic science major Finn Callahan, the team gave her the motivation to take on a leadership role during the past two years of her involvement with the club, though she was hesitant beforehand.

“Usually I’m not one to put myself in leadership positions,” said Callahan. “But because it’s for a sport I love and a team I play on I became truly invested in the betterment of the team.”

Callahan also said she believes club sports offer a way to connect with other communities on campus with whom you wouldn’t organically connect.

“Because our team takes grad students as well as underclass men, I have met some of my closest friends I have made at university who I otherwise would have never gotten to interact with,” she said.

The men’s rugby team shares that theme of a welcoming environment, said junior paramedicine major Liam Eglin.

“The team is mostly full of super-friendly guys, as long as you’re willing to show up to practice and work on it, people will tolerate you,” said Eglin.

Eglin agreed that he’s grown with his involvement with the team.

“I’ve got to fill my schedule, lose weight and do something productive with my time while also learning a new sport,” Eglin said.

Callahan and Eglin share another view that makes them consider club sports better for students. Club sports are less stressful than a varsity team.

“I wholeheartedly believe that playing on a club team is remarkably less stressful,” Eglin said. “If they had actual tryouts and the requirements of a varsity sport at this school we’d lose half the team.”

Callahan points to the flexibility in the women’s club volleyball team as another way club sports can be less stressful.

“We also are infinitely more flexible than a varsity team, so if you’re worried about the amount of time and effort you’d be committing to with varsity, club is a great alternative,” Callahan said. “We are very understanding if you’re sick, have class, work or homework, you just let an E-board member know.”

For anyone who wants to know which level of sport to try out for, Callahan suggests students consider their opportunity to make an impact on their team.

“I would reiterate that if you want the opportunity to have a real impact on the team and get to be a part of decision making and practice planning there likely isn’t that kind of opportunity,” said Callahan.

While women’s club volleyball tryouts have closed, different sport’s schedules and capacity vary. Students who are interested can reach out to the respective teams by finding their contact information through a Charger Connection search.

When “written off,” the average student may quickly cut their losses and give up. But, Wile E. Coyote shows us that while determination may not always get you the Road Runner, it can help resist exploitation that persists when people have given up on standing up for themselves. In Wile E.’s case, that means standing up to ACME, a mega corporation that consistently puts profits over people.

“Coyote vs. Acme” was originally scheduled for release by Warner Bros. on July 21, 2023, but was released on Aug. 28. The movie was shelved by Warner Bros. and later sold to independent distributor Ketchup Entertainment. In retrospect, the film’s theme of persistence makes this ironically seem like a guerrilla marketing strategy.

Although the film was completed and reportedly performed well in test screenings, Warner Bros. announced that it would not release the movie. The company reportedly opted to claim a $30 million tax deduction after spending approximately $70 million on production. They believed the movie wasn’t worth the cost of distribution or even shopping around its distribution rights.

After the news of the cancellation, Director Dave Green said, “For three years, I was lucky enough to make a movie about Wile E. Coyote, the most persistent, passionate, and resilient character of all time. I was surrounded by a brilliant team who poured their souls into this project for years. We were all determined to honor the legacies of these historic characters and actually get them right.”

This was not the first time Warner Bros. had shelved a near-completed project, as “Batgirl” and “Scoob! Holiday Haunt” were films also canceled as part of tax-related write-offs deep into production.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, several filmmakers reportedly canceled meetings with Warner Bros. after news of the decision became public. This led them to later sell the film’s distribution rights to Ketchup Entertainment for $50 million. The deal was Ketchup Entertainment’s most expensive acquisition of distribution rights. The movie grossed $20 million domestically on opening weekend with steady growth into the following week. Early critical response to the movie has been highly positive. With a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer, the film is placed in the company of the likes of others such as “The Odyssey” and “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” which scored 94% and 89%, respectively.

Communication department chair Natalie Chavoya said, “It’s exciting to see this film has finally made it to the big screen. For a film, large or small, the project represents the blood, sweat, and often tears of a dedicated cast and crew. When a film is held back, it’s devastating. That’s what makes this release so important. People fought for this film to be seen, and they won!”

Chavoya’s sentiment is mirrored in the end credit sequence of the film, where the screen reads: “Dedicated to those who spoke out when it counted. This film was made to the big screen because of you.”

“Coyote vs. Acme” shows us that being counted out isn’t the end of the journey, and that community-driven initiatives can make change, even if it’s just for a Looney Tunes legal comedy.

The Chargers opened the weekend against the Fordham Rams on Friday by taking the opening set in a back-and-forth battle, 27-25. The Rams responded by taking the second set, 25-22, before beating New Haven, 28-26, in a tightly-contested third set. Fordham closed out the match with a 25-13 fourth-set victory.

Lauren MacKellar led the Chargers with 17 kills, while Victoria Trunkl added seven and Josie Foster recorded six. Caroline Johnston directed the New Haven offense with 34 assists.

New Haven also had strong defensive performances from Mirella Rederer and Payton Malinoski. Both finished with 17 and 16 digs respectively. Foster led the Chargers at the net with five blocks, while Johnston added four and Kira Lynch recorded three.

The Chargers returned to the court Saturday afternoon against Delaware, but the Blue Hens controlled the match from the start, earning a 25-16, 25-23 and 25-20 victory.

MacKellar again led New Haven offensively by recording 10 kills, while Marley Alefaio followed with nine and Quinn Yenshaw added six. Johnston recorded 22 assists to lead the Chargers’ offense.

Rederer paced New Haven defensively with seven digs, while Payton Malinoski and Mirella Rederer each recorded two service aces. Foster led the Chargers with three blocks.
