Join our fight against Lindridge Road housing plans – have your say!

The campaign against cynical plans to exploit a loophole and build on green belt land near Lindridge Road, is gathering pace - and time is running out for you to have your say, with the deadline for objections being this Thursday (September 10th).

Residents were appalled to discover developers were submitting a planning application for 195 new homes on the green belt site, strategically tabled ahead of Birmingham City Council’s new Local Plan.

Thanks to your voices and the hard work of Conservative councillors, the Local Plan will protect Sutton’s green belt sites. But this hasn’t stopped greedy developers from finding a loophole to exploit.

This week James Jesic, CEO of Severn Trent, the company which owns the land, received letters of objections from me and from Cllr Simon Ward, Leader of Royal Sutton Coldfield Town Council.

Sir Andrew said:

“In my letter, I informed Mr Jesic that building on the site would be devastating to local traffic, with the surrounding area already experiencing immense pressure and congestion.

“I also pointed out that the Royal Town is already host to one of the largest housing construction sites in the country – with substantial development taking place on former green belt land. We cannot stand to lose any more of our precious countryside.

“Finally, I raised my concerns about the wider implications of the project on Severn Trent’s relationship with the communities it serves.”

The company is an important local utility provider, servicing thousands of customers across Sutton Coldfield. It therefore must understand and respect the character, priorities and concerns of our communities.

Simon Ward’s formal letter echoed Sir Andrew’s concerns. He also accuses Severn Trent of exploiting a temporary window of opportunity, created by the Government publishing its housing delivery results, to justify the proposal.

He wrote:

“We need the right homes in the right places, not speculative builds that destroy our precious Green Belt for corporate profit."

Sir Andrew placed a charity bet of £50 given generously by Coral with the proceeds (win or lose at least £50!) going to the Sutton Coldfield Cancer Support Centre of which he is President.

Looking forward to heritage week in Sutton

Sutton Coldfield Heritage Week runs from Thursday 10 to Sunday 20 September this year, with more than 20 exciting events to educate and enthuse the public on the Royal Town’s history.

I’m looking forward to diving into the history of Sutton Coldfield. The calendar includes a range of talks, walks and open days in buildings not regularly opened to the public.

You can catch talks on a variety of topics, including architect Antony Whitehead’s speech on modern buildings, Dr Mike Hodder’s talks on archaeology, Alan Smith’s reminiscence on the 1957 World Scout Jamboree, and Emma Barran-Scott’s talk on the history of sweet-making in the West Midlands.

Open days will be held at many Sutton churches, New Hall Hotel and grounds, New Hall Water Mill, 46 and 52 High Street, the Old Smithy, Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School, the Masonic Hall and the Town Hall.

Other events include the Bold Writers showcase evening, where you can listen to local creative writers read from their work; an exhibition on railway history at Sutton Coldfield station; and a screening of various heritage films at Highbury Theatre.

You can even head out into Sutton Park for a fascinating archaeology walk, led by Dr Mike Hodder and Friends of Sutton Park Association.

Backing petition to make drug available on the NHS

I received a moving letter from local mum Paula Mullen, asking for help spreading the word of an important petition which would change the life of Britons suffering from Friedreich’s Ataxia.

Paula’s son, Bradley Barratt, suffers from the rare, inherited disorder, which causes progressive degeneration of the nervous system. There is a drug that can help treat this awful disease – Omaveloxolone – but it is not available in the UK, despite being in use in the USA, Europe and the Republic of Ireland.

Paula wrote that it is heartbreaking to watch her son deteriorate when a drug to stop the disease’s progression exists and is already in circulation overseas.

Working to improve parking at Good Hope Hospital

Meetings continue to be held to solve the issue of parking at the Good Hope Hospital site, led by hard-working councillors Richard Parkin and David Pears.

Good Hope is growing, putting enormous strain on the limited parking provisions on site. Nearby residents have been pushed to their limits with congestion and parking issues on their roads.

Following the Councillors’ most recent meeting, the hospital confirmed that replacement of its existing car park infrastructure is a priority.

As a first step, the hospital intends to implement a new parking management system, including automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) technology and new payment machines.

This is seen as a bridge between the existing facilities and the eventual construction of a new multi storey car park, which the hospital has committed to.

The ANPR data will provide vital information on the requirements for the multi storey car park.

Encouraging electric vehicle uptake in the Royal Town

I recently wrote to ask the Secretary of State for Transport what assessment she has made of the potential impact of the availability of public electric vehicle charging infrastructure on consumer uptake of electric vehicles in Royal Sutton Coldfield.

Keir Mather, Parliamentary Under-Secretary for the Department, replied:

“As of 1 April 2026, there were 102 public EV chargers in Sutton Coldfield. To build on this, the West Midlands Combined Authority has received over £18 million to deliver additional local charging infrastructure through the Local EV Infrastructure Fund.”

Training and career progression for local police officers

I also wrote asking the Secretary of State for the Home Department, whether she is taking steps to increase funding for ongoing training in West Midlands Police to support career progression for local officers.

Sarah Jones, Minister of State for the Home Office, responded:

“This Government is committed to ensuring there are consistent, high standards in policing. That is why, since being elected, the government has increased funding to forces by £2 billion. West Midlands Police will receive up to £883.9 million in 2026-27, an increase of up to £36.9 million when compared to the 2025-26 police funding settlement.

The College of Policing sets national standards for leadership, training and development and supports forces and individuals at local level with career progression. However, Chief Constables are ultimately responsible for investment in their workforce at a local level, ensuring that officers are appropriately trained and equipped for their role on an ongoing basis.

As set out in the White Paper, ‘From local to national: a new model for policing’, we are committed to ensuring that officers and staff have the right skills and support to do their jobs. To support our ambitious programme of police reform, the Police Leadership Commission chaired by Lord Blunkett and Lord Herbert has been assessing how a culture of learning, support and development can be further embedded throughout the careers of officers and staff.”

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what discussions she has had with the National Highways agency on improving lorry parking facilities in the Midlands.

The department engages regularly with National Highways on improving lorry parking provision and driver welfare facilities across England, including in the Midlands.

Through the HGV Parking and Driver Welfare Match Funding Grant Scheme and National Highways' Lorry Parking Facilities Improvements Scheme, 62 sites across the Midlands since 2022, have received funding to enhance parking capacity, strengthen security measures, and improve facilities for HGV drivers.

The National Highways Scheme remains open to eligible lorry parking operators to improve driver welfare facilities, site security and lorry parking capacity.

Question:

To ask the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, how many long-term unemployed 18–21-year-olds have been enrolled on the new national Jobs Guarantee scheme in Birmingham.

Phase One of the Jobs Guarantee commenced in May and will be followed by national rollout from November 2026. The information requested is planned for future publication and will be made available in due course.

Birmingham and Solihull is one of six Phase One areas where support is being offered first. In Birmingham and Solihull, DWP has partnered with Catch-22 to deliver the Jobs Guarantee and referrals started in May. Long-term unemployed young people who are enrolled on the scheme will be provide

I unveiled a plaque, met many of the members and the organising committee and was shown round by Martyn Scott on what was a memorable and enjoyable visit.

It does not get much better than this for your MP on a Saturday morning!

The Model Engineering Society have been going since 1948, and are always welcoming to new members regardless of where your interests in the subject lie.

I last met them exhibiting some of their wonderful trains in Vesey Gardens last year. The group truly are one of the jewels in the Royal Town’s crown.

The fight goes on against parking fees in Sutton Park

The battle against Birmingham City Council’s deeply unpopular plans to introduce parking charges in Sutton Park continues – and we need your voices to be heard.

These outrageous plans are still on the table, proposing that Sutton residents should be charged to park on the already pothole-ridden facilities across Sutton Park. We Conservatives wholeheartedly disagree with this proposal and are disappointed that our alternative suggestion of placing Sutton Park into a charitable trust continues to be ignored.

Concerns over state of station’s historic façade and roofline

Following local concern about the deterioration of the historic façade and roofline of Royal Sutton Coldfield railway station, I contacted Ian McConnell, Managing Director of West Midlands Trains, to demand action. I recently received a response.

I wrote to him highlighting particular concern about visibly rotting timberwork on the façade of the building.

As one of the most prominent gateways into Royal Sutton Coldfield, the station plays an important role in shaping first impressions for both residents and visitors, as well as contributing to the town’s historic character and civic pride.

With Sutton Coldfield approaching its quincentenary celebrations, I asked West Midlands Trains to urgently assess the condition of the roof and affected timberwork, and to carry out the necessary repairs and repainting to ensure the station is properly restored ahead of these important commemorations. I also requested a clear timetable for refurbishment.

Andrew McGill, Public Affairs Manager for WMR, responded to say that some work has been underway at our station, including the replacement of rotten timbers earlier this year and gutter repairs.

They have supported other projects at Sutton Coldfield station, including community art projects and the opening of Folklore Café on Platform 2.

WMR are also planning to ensure the station looks its best for the upcoming quincentenary celebrations in 2028.

However, no further works are currently scheduled.

While it is wonderful that these projects have happened and WMR continues to monitor the state of Sutton train station, I will continue to push for this vital historic landmark and important gateway to our town to receive the attention and repairs it deserves.

Why Birmingham’s blanket 20mph plans won’t work

Birmingham Local Conservatives have launched a petition opposing Birmingham City Council’s barmy blanket plans to make Brum the UK’s first 20mph-only city.

These unpractical plans have been proposed by the new administration running BCC. It’s an unacceptable punishment of law-abiding drivers.

The proposal would reduce the speed limit on all routes classified below A-roads, including in Sutton Coldfield, regardless of whether there has been any issues on the road.

Local Conservatives believe localised 20mph areas are far more effective when restricted to being focused on small zones such as outside schools, hospitals and parks, and crucially where residents support them.

Additionally, the police have stated they would not enforce the new law, meaning people could simply ignore the new limits without penalty. The Council’s plan is unrealistic and unworkable.

If BCC want to get serious about making our roads safer, they should be focusing their efforts on tackling the record number of unlicensed and uninsured drivers in the city. Targeting these people will have a far greater impact on people's safety in the city than their plans to target all drivers will.

They should also focus on fixing the many potholes making our roads unstable and dangerous, as residents continue to raise concerns about their shocking state.

Highway maintenance

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, how much additional funding has been allocated to Birmingham City Council from the £7.3 billion the Government has announced to support local highways maintenance.

Simon Lightwood, Parliamentary Under-Secretary for the Department, replied:

“For this financial year, West Midlands Combined Authority will receive an additional £17 million in their Integrated Settlement to fund highways maintenance in Birmingham. This amount was calculated using the Department’s local highways maintenance funding formula.”

Fighting infuriating green belt ‘loophole’ plans

Residents have been shocked to discover that developers are attempting a cynical green belt ‘grab’ on Lindridge Road, by tabling a planning application for 195 new homes ahead of the adoption of Birmingham council’s new Local Plan.

“Not only would the development be on designated green belt land, but the homes would be built on the most unsuitable location in Sutton Coldfield, right next door to New Hall Cemetery which is doubling in size to 24,000 burial spots and causing traffic chaos in the area.

"It’s complete and utter madness. The developers either don’t realise this or they are too selfish to care.

"The period in advance of Birmingham City Council’s new Local Plan being adopted – which now PROTECTS our green belt after our successful campaign – is a vulnerable time for speculative green belt applications. It is this loophole which developers are hoping to exploit.
