This free back-to-school celebration is presented by The Flynn and BSD.

This is our fifth year working with The Flynn to bring amazing shows to our community for free… you won’t want to miss this!

This year, bring your friends and family for an awe-inspiring evening of large-scale puppetry, featuring Sea Fantasy – The Pearl (see below).

The show is created by Plasticiens Volants, an exciting and dynamic street theater troupe joining us all the way from France.

Community members are invited to attend Burlington High School (BHS) and Burlington Technical Center’s (BTC) Grand Opening and Block Party on Saturday, August 22nd, from 11AM-2PM! The free, family-friendly celebration will include food, music, self-guided scavenger hunt tours, bounce houses, community partners, and more. Attendees will gather at the south entrance at 11 AM for a ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring students of all ages, before coming into the building to celebrate. 

BSD Board Chair Clare Wool and Superintendent Tom Flanagan issued a joint statement of gratitude and an invitation leading up to the event. “We are incredibly excited about this new campus and filled with gratitude for all the community support we’ve received. This Grand Opening and Block Party is an opportunity for us to open the doors and say thank you to everyone who has helped get us to this moment. We cannot wait to share this celebratory moment with our community.” Flanagan noted that when students return to school next week, it will be the first time that high school and technical center students have been together on the same campus since 2020. At that time, the former campus was shuttered due to PCB contamination. As a result, BTC students attended classes throughout the city in numerous locations, while BHS students attended school in a renovated Macy’s, a story that received international news coverage. 

Wool noted that in keeping with the community theme, the event has received donations and support from several community partners, and more than 20 organizations are set to participate in the celebration. All are welcome to attend and enjoy pizza, cookies, ice cream, and more.

Beginning Monday, June 22, the Burlington School Food Project will provide meals at no charge to kids 18 years old and under. No fees, no registration, no residency requirements – all children are welcome; just show up!

LUNCH: Every Monday through Friday, lunches will be available from 11:30-12:30 behind Edmunds School

SUPPER: Every Monday through Friday, supper will be provided at Roosevelt Park (57 Oak Street) from 4:30-5:30 PM.

FREE MEAL BOXES: The District will also offer free meal boxes every week, each containing seven days of breakfast and lunch. Boxes will be available for pickup throughout Chittenden County. 

• Wednesdays, JULY 1- AUG 12, at Intervale Center (180 Intervale Road) – 4:00-5:30
• Thursdays, JUNE 25-AUG 13, at Alburgh Community Education Center (45 Champlain Street, Alburgh) – 4:30-5:30

The calendar is aligned with Vermont state statute (as outlined below). This is the second year the regional calendar has been created collaboratively with superintendents from the entire Champlain Valley region instead of just Chittenden County. This has helped districts, including ours, better align calendars and coordinate across the region. It has also made it much easier for technical centers to have 175 common school days across the region to offer the full academic program. 

Highlights: The calendar contains 177 student days and 10 teacher in-service days; BSD typically includes a few more student days than required by State Law in anticipation of any days that require a school closure. While vacations and some holidays are similar to what has been presented in the past, there are a few important pieces to highlight. 

1. The first day for students will once again be the last Wednesday in August. This is a return to the previous practice after last year’s first day of school being on a Monday. 
2. In alignment with districts in the region, the calendar again includes days off for Eid, Yom Kippur, and Diwali. 
3. Middle school parent-teacher conferences will take place over one day, instead of two, and will happen in October rather than November. A similar schedule is already in place at BHS and works well. The change to October aligns with the end of the quarter and allows middle and high school teachers to share timely data with families regarding student progress. (Middle school education teams understand that moving to one day of parent-teacher conferences may require making additional meeting times available to families outside of the one official day, and they are making plans to ensure all families have equal access to their education teams.)

Incorporating Community Feedback: The development process included feedback from directors and principals, as well as consideration from a recent community survey. Specifically, as a result of community feedback, early release days for teacher PD will now happen on Wednesdays, which is already a day that we release early. We have also made winter break shorter to six days, not seven or eight as has been the past practice.

Professional Learning: The proposed BSD calendar reflects the 175 common days in our region and includes the state mandates and contractual obligations for professional learning, new staff orientation, and parent conferences. 

BSD uses Professional Learning Days, Early Release Days, and Wednesday early release to give educators time to improve their skills by learning new approaches, collaborating with each other, and focusing on strategies to support student learning, like: 

• Early Literacy and the Science of Reading
• Mathematical Practices
• Response to Intervention in Literacy and Math
• Standards aligned curriculum and pedagogy

Vermont Statute (16 V.S.A. § 1071) – School Year and School Day:

(1) At least 175 student attendance days in each school year. For purposes of this section, a majority of students enrolled in a school must be recorded on the school roll as in attendance on any day counted as a student attendance day.

(2) At least five teacher in-service education days, during which time activities shall be conducted without students present in order to increase the competency of the staff, improve the curriculum of the school, enable teachers to attend State educational meetings, or disseminate student progress information to parents or the community.

(e) Regional calendar. Before April 1 of each year, the superintendents of schools and the headmasters of public schools not managed by school boards in an area shall meet and, by majority vote, establish a uniform calendar within that area for the following school year. The calendar shall include student attendance days, periods of vacation, holidays, and teacher in-service education days, and shall comply with subsection (a) of this section. Unless permitted by the Secretary, no area served by a regional career technical center shall be divided into two or more calendar regions.

(f) Additional days. Nothing in this section prohibits a school from scheduling additional days for student attendance or teacher in-service education. However, those days shall not conflict with any applicable school calendar.

Dear Burlington Community, 

I am proud to let you know that the BHS/BTC project remains on budget and on track to open for school next year. If you haven’t driven down North Ave. or taken a look at our time-lapse video recently, you should!

Earlier this year, we began offering staff, students, district leaders, and partners the opportunity to tour the space. The reactions have been overwhelming, and I am excited to be less than a year away from giving our students, staff, and the community a high school designed with their input and designed to serve students for at least the next 50 years. I’m looking forward to opening more tours to the public, and we think we will be able to do this in the late spring or early summer…stay tuned. In the meantime, please find more information below and, as always, please feel free to reach out with any questions.

BONUS CONTENT! BTC Opens Aviation, Career, and Technical Education Center! Students, staff, and community partners were on hand to celebrate the grand opening of Burlington Technical Center’s new Aviation, Career, and Technical Education Center in South Burlington last week! The $12 million project completely renovated a nearly decrepit airplane hangar at Burlington International Airport. Made possible through a $10 million grant secured by then-Senator Patrick Leahy, BSD has completed the major renovation under budget. Congratulations to everyone who worked so hard to open this new facility, and special thank you to Director Reed, Property Services Director Lyall Smith, and all the BTC teachers who helped us get into the space, and to Moses Daly and Jason Cooper for have the vision and goal to make this a reality! BHS/BTC Budget – As mentioned above, the project remains on budget. More importantly, every day, it is looking more like we will not have to borrow the full $165 million that voters approved for the project. We still don’t know if we will be just under the number or if savings will be more substantial, but we are hoping to have a more solid estimate by the end of 2025. Our team has worked hard to make sure we are being good stewards of taxpayer resources, and I am grateful that they are taking this work seriously while also delivering on incredible learning spaces!

Flooring – The gym floors and other specialty floor installations have started. We put our COVID collection of large dehumidifiers to good use to bring the moisture content of the concrete floors into the proper range for the flooring installation. 

Lockers – Locker designs and locations have been selected and are beginning to get installed!

EV Charging Stations – We have 18 charging stations ready to install, and have the electrical capacity on site to double the number of charging stations in the future if needed. We are using ChargePoint chargers, which are well-known in our area. 

Solar and LEED – We will be working with SunCommon to install a 222kWdc (150kWac) rooftop solar system. The cost of the solar was not included in our project costs, and we have been managing this separately. Funding for this will come from rebates provided by Burlington Electric Department (BED)for installing energy-efficient products as part of our project.  We are also reaching out to the VT Bond Bank to discuss the process to apply for additional Domestic Content tax credit. As a reminder, we are pursuing LEED certification of the building and we remain hopeful that we will receive GOLD designation. 

Art for New BHS/BTC We have been receiving some requests from the community to donate art to the new BHS/BTC site, both inside and outside the building. After connecting with a few other new high schools in other states and with folks at BHS, the consistent feedback is that we should wait a year prior to considering how to add adult-created art to the school. We have items that were in the former building that will be displayed again, and we will be adorning the walls with student-created work. During this school year, we will form a small committee to develop criteria for determining how we will consider offers of donated art for the building. During the 26/27 school year, we will then form a small committee that will apply this criteria for considering offers of donated art.

Landscaping – We have grass growing in some of the finished landscaped areas! Some of the areas will be replanted with a low-growing grass that will not require mowing; this strategy will be used on the steep bank areas.

Furniture, Fixtures, and Equipment (FF&E)/BHS Move-in Taskforce – EEI, who did great work on the IAA project, is working with Exterus furniture to draft a contract. The BHS Move-In task force have reviewed potential value engineering items at their next meeting to make sure we are balancing the desires for all new equipment along with the desire to keep costs lower for taxpayers. The AV design team has also been meeting with our AV installer and staff members to begin to understand our new AV systems!

Bring your friends and family to Edmunds Elementary & Middle School for an awe-inspiring evening of circus and giant puppets. We will be giving away a few school supplies, Ben and Jerry’s ice cream, and swag. Greater Burlington YMCA will be there with Swag too!
