It’s probably because of my Irish grandmother’s disdain for the British. What could the North possibly have to offer that’s worth leaving the Republic? Kinbane, that’s what.
I took my family to Ireland for three weeks in 2024. I’d been twice before — for a month in a house swap when I was seven, and for a month a decade later travelling with friends on the Irish Experience for my Grade 11 English credit. I wanted to retrace my steps with my wife and kids — and we sure did, all the way up to recreating photos and visiting dozens of precise spots that had been seared into my soul on previous trips.
Ireland is a primordial part of my being. When I still had an afro, I would describe my ethnic background as having Bajan hair, a Polish nose, and a Celtic heart. There’s something about the place that beckons me, something about the land that places my whole past and future before me — like I’m feeling 30 years back, 50 years forward, and 1000 years in either direction all at once. The yearning of my heartspace is fundamentally Irish — a longing for Mhuínse (and we almost went there too — believe me I looked it up and tried to make it happen).
So much of this trip was retracing my steps with my heart as a homing beacon. But the place that most captured my heart was a place I’d never been before on the Antrim coast.
Northern Ireland was an afterthought in my trip planning. Why bother leaving the South? I suppose I was also scared off because it was a different place during the Troubles, so we did not visit in 1994. But Keith from theirishroadtrip.com — who became a dear but distant partner in planning this trip — made a compelling case for an Antrim Coast road trip, and I figured we could make a day trip from Dublin to Belfast, up the Antrim Coast road, and back. What seemed like a detour to the Giant’s Causeway ended up causing me to mark my map for the place I most want to return.
After an early morning departure from Dublin, first breakfast at Insomnia, and second breakfast (or was it lunch?) at a Belfast McDonald’s, we set off further north — on the left side of the road, and in miles per hour — making for Dunluce and the Giant’s Causeway, after which we’d head back on the inland highway and stop for dinner in Belfast en route back to Dublin (we fell in love with the Zizzi Italian restaurant chain). I marked OpenStreetMap with a couple dozen spots along the coastal drive so we could visit as many as time would allow. Dunluce is hard to forget, with jagged ruins like teeth on the edge of the cliff, and the legend of the kitchen that fell into the sea. Carrick-a-Rede was also worth a stop, and we just did quick drivebys at many other stops like Dunseverick and Carrickfergus. There was too much ground to cover in one short day trip from Dublin, and the drive itself was half the draw. But at Kinbane, we stopped and left the car to walk, because we couldn’t see the castle from the road.
My kids say there’s been a different theme for each of our road trips — waterfalls through Western Canada (“another waterfall??”), museums through the US northeast (we started with a blitz of Smithsonians and cemented the theme by watching Night at the Museum in the evenings), and, well, playgrounds through the Maritimes (the kids were younger and many things were closed during the pandemic). In Ireland, the theme was castles.
Castle after castle, we’d constantly ask each other: Which is your favourite castle now? What are your top three? How do your rankings compare with Keith’s? Muckross Abbey was otherworldly, like a place from the Ocarina of Time or Breath of the Wild, or really like Rivendell or Lothlórien or someplace Elvish. Bunratty Castle was a childhood favourite — I’m a McNamara and I remember flashes of exploring it from my visit at age seven. (It’s what I always think of when I think of a medieval castle.) But nothing compares to the experience of first laying eyes on Kinbane.
From the parking lot, you can’t see the castle. You take a walking trail a brief way round the rocky cliffside and towards the water. There are ruins somewhere ahead, but you can’t see them — until, suddenly, you can. As you round the bend, you see it all at once: the path dives down steeply, and far below and a bit back up the other side, on a narrow extension of the rocky coastline, lie the ruins of Kinbane Castle. Scotland visible in the distance, the rocky edge of Ireland holds the little that remains of the castle. To experience the transformation of a rather ordinary coastal trail into a bridge to the ruins down below and out into the water felt like walking through a portal. It’s like a rocky hand is stretching out into the sea — relaxed, palm facing upwards — and the ruins of Kinbane lie out towards the end of Ireland’s index finger. As you step round the bend, past the palm of the land’s hand, you must first descend steeply along the base of the finger and across the joint below, before beginning a much smaller but still steep ascent towards what’s left of the castle at the upper joint. Like the hand of Ireland delicately balances Kinbane on its finger to show you something precious and fragile.
After our high school trip to Ireland, my best friend and bandmate wrote in our song, Halton’s Post, about our visit to Kinsale at the opposite edge of the island, almost kitty-corner to Kinbane.
And in Kinsale, on the lonely coast of Ireland Just past the harbour, where a dozen bright sails soar Once stood a castle, but now lies only ruins It strikes me odd that only cold wind calls it home
Except, it wasn’t actually a castle in Kinsale — it struck me odd as I realized on this past trip that it was a British fort. Yet at Kinbane Head lies the trace of a castle on the lonely coast of Ireland. To reach Kinbane Castle, you must first round the bend, and then descend below, before you can rise up the other side. Down below, at the edge of the finite, once stood a castle, practically hidden from the mainland. Now, at this place that feels like a secret, lies only ruins. Only cold wind calls it home — yet, with just one look, I felt like I belonged there too.
Keith may have ranked it #22, but Kinbane is first among castles on my list and in my heart.

Net neutrality battles between ISPs and consumers/tech companies were raging, as were the anti-circumvention copyfights. But beyond those narrow battles, there was a broader war.
Jonathon Zittrain warned of The Future of the Internet and How to Stop It, and Tim Wu warned of the inevitable war for The Master Switch. I thought it might be a waste of time to read The Master Switch in 2026, after it languished in my “to read” pile for a decade and a half, but I was impressed reading it this winter. It provided an excellent history of 20th century communications technology that helps me to better understand today’s battle for the internet. According to Tim Wu, the history of communications technology has been a cycle (“the Cycle”) with a brief period of an open system, then an empire built on control, until eventually the empire falls to a new system — and then the Cycle repeats. This happened with the telephone, long distance calling, AM radio, FM radio, broadcast television, and cable. Wu’s question in 2010 was: Will it be any different with the internet?
We hoped so. The internet is different – it’s a universal network. But Wu’s account of early optimism about the telephone, AM radio, broadcast TV, and cable during brief periods of openness and free speech serve as a warning as each of those technologies was quickly captured by a small handful of companies (if not a single monopoly) for decades, often with the assistance of government (sometimes unwittingly but often very wittingly). Before reading The Master Switch, I’d always believed there was something inherent to 20th century communications technology that led to centralized control by a few companies, but I was surprised to learn that each of these technologies actually started out much more open and decentralized. Centralization was inevitable, but for political, economic, and cultural reasons — not because of the technology.
Writing in 2010 during the battle for net neutrality, it seemed that Tim Wu’s concern was telecommunications companies taking control of the internet. That hasn’t happened, but the Cycle has repeated with technology companies like Meta (Facebook) and Alphabet (Google).
Wu’s thesis is that the story of creative destruction — that new, disruptive innovations will displace old monopolies — is actually much more complicated. Monopolists don’t go without a fight. There’s regulatory capture (in which government regulations of dominant companies actually serve to shore up their dominance), there are just plain old dirty tricks (the sabotage from AT&T!), but most insightful is what Wu calls the Kronos Effect.
In antiquity, Kronos, the second ruler of the universe according to Greek mythology, had a problem. The Delphic oracle having warned him that one of his children would dethrone him, he was more than troubled to hear his wife was pregnant. He waited for her to give birth, then took the child and ate it. His wife got pregnant again and again, so he had to eat his own more than once.
And so derives the Kronos Effect, the efforts undertaken by a dominant company to consume its potential successors in their infancy. Understanding this effect is critical to understanding the Cycle, and for that matter, the history of information technology. It may sometimes seem that invention and technological advance are a natural, orderly process, but this is an illusion. Whatever technological reality we live with is the result of tooth-and-claw industrial combat.
While Wu in 2010 had his eye on telecommunications companies and international conglomerates, it’s hard to think of a better description for the way in which the dominant internet companies have survived — by consuming their competitors in their infancy. Facebook disrupted MySpace, but then bought Instagram and WhatsApp and many other companies. Google disrupted Yahoo!, but then bought YouTube and most Google products came from acquisitions (Maps, Docs, and many more). Amazon is notorious for business practices that choke out competitors. The internet giants have become very good at consuming their competitors during infancy over the past 20 years.
Internet companies have fended off telcos and Hollywood, but in this round of the Cycle, they’ve become the centralized powers. The web we once loved is largely forgotten about as the internet has reduced computing to a few companies: it’s Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, Apple iOS or Google Android, Facebook/Instagram/WhatsApp and Twitter/X. Name the last scrappy startup that’s offered a service you’ve heard of? The big guys eat them. The only other examples I can think of are “AI” companies that threaten dominance and new centralized control almost right out of the gate. And the more the internet has centralized, the more its been enshittified.
It’s a bleak picture. Tim Wu’s history of 20th century battles sheds a lot of light on the present day.
For example, I knew a tiny bit about AT&T and Bell Labs and the famous Carterphone decision, but I had no idea how many technologies Bell Labs had invented and suppressed — like magnetic tape and the answering machine which were invented in the 1930s!
Let’s return to Hickman’s magnetic tape and the answering machine. What’s interesting is that Hickman’s invention in the 1930s would not be “discovered” until the 1990s. For soon after Hickman had demonstrated his invention, AT&T ordered the Labs to cease all research into magnetic storage, and Hickman’s research was suppressed and concealed for more than sixty years, coming to light only when the historian Mark Clark came across Hickman’s laboratory notebook in the Bell archives.
“The impressive technical successes of Bell Labs’ scientists and engineers,” writes Clark, “were hidden by the upper management of both Bells Lab and AT&T.” AT&T “refused to develop magnetic recording for consumer use and actively discouraged its development and use by others.” Eventually magnetic tape would come to America via imports of foreign technology, mainly German.
But why would company management bury such an important and commercially valuable discovery? What were they afraid of? The answer, rather surreal, is evident in the corporate memoranda, also unearthed by Clark, imposing the research ban. AT&T firmly believed that the answering machine, and its magnetic tapes, would lead the public to abandon the telephone.
More precisely, in Bell’s imagination, the very knowledge that it was possible to record a conversation would “greatly restrict the use of the telephone,” with catastrophic consequences for its business. Businessmen, for instance, the theory supposed, might fear the potential use of a recorded conversation to undo a written contract. Tape recorders would also inhibit discussing obscene or ethically dubious matters. In sum, the very possibility of magnetic recording, it was feared, would “change the whole nature of telephone conversations” and “render the telephone much less satisfactory and useful in the vast majority of cases in which it is employed.”
And so we see that the enlightened monopolist can occasionally prove a delusional paranoid. True, once magnetic recording arrived in America, there were a few, from Nixon to Lewinsky, whose sordid secrets would be exposed by it. But, amazingly enough, we all still use telephones. Such are the liabilities of being subject to the whim of even the most high-minded corporation: even the fantasy that the fate of the company could be at stake can have significant consequences. It was safer to shut down a thrilling line of research than risk the Bell system.
This is the essential weakness of a centralized approach to innovation: the notion that it can be a planned and systematic process, best directed by a kind of central intelligence; that is is simply a matter of assembling all the best minds and putting them to work in unison. Were it so, the future could be planned and executed in a scientific manner.
Yes, Bell Labs was great. But AT&T, as an innovator, bore a serious genetic flaw; it could not originate technologies that might, by the remotest possibility, threaten the Bell system. In the language of innovation theory, the output of the Bell Labs was practically restricted to sustaining inventions; disruptive technologies, those that might even cast a shadow of uncertainty over the business model, were simply out of the question.
The recording machine is only one example of a technology that AT&T, out of such fears, would for years suppress or fail to market: fiber optics, mobile telephones, digital subscriber lines (DSL), facsimile machines, speakerphones—the list goes on and on. These technologies, ranging from novel to revolutionary, were simple too daring for Bell’s comfort. Without a reliable sense of how they might affect the Bell system, AT&T and its heirs would deploy each with painfully slow caution, if at all.
Perhaps the response seems less neurotic if we consider how deep-seated can be the apprehension of the Kronos effect. Not for nothing would the Bell system prove itself among the best defended and most secure monopolies in corporate history. Whatever the opportunity inherent in new technology, there was always also a threat, one that prudence demanded be devoured at birth. Bell’s own genesis had proved that bit of wisdom. In 1876, Alexander Bell had patented the machine that eventually dethroned and replaced what was then the nation’s greatest corporation, Western Union. What charm of the new can possibly rival the instinct for self-preservation?
This is why Wu says that unseating monopolists is less of question of market dynamics than politics. The Cycle between decentralized freedom and centralized control is determined not by technology alone, but by wide-scale tooth-and-claw industrial combat, and monopolies are more often aided by government intervention than prevented. (AT&T was being propped up by all sorts of government support!)
Industry structure determines freedom of expression in the medium. I had no idea that at the start of radio or television, anyone could broadcast in a peer-to-peer type manner. Once everyone needed a licence from the government to broadcast radio or television, and the government only wanted a few broadcasters in the market, control went into the hands of the government and a few companies, and a technology that actually started out decentralized became centralized.
Communications technology is just some specialized field affecting a particular corner of industry. Freedom of speech depends on the ability to communicate — and expression is mediated by communications technology. The shape of the industry becomes the shape of freedom of expression, and that has not only technological but economic, political, cultural, artistic, social, and even religious implications. Communications technology affects how we speak and what we can say to each other.
In 2010, Tim Wu’s concern for the future of the internet was large conglomerates as the battles of that era were between old and new media companies. There was a legitimate question at the time: Is Google a different kind of firm? They sure seemed like it in the 2000s, but Google has long since dropped their “don’t be evil” motto. In 2010, Wu holds up Google Android as a radically new approach to raise the question of whether Google was a fundamentally different kind of firm that might prevent the Cycle from repeating, but by 2018 it was clear that Google had just developed an innovative and novel form of bait and switch, and was exerting immense control over the Android Open Source Project (that continues to worsen).
Looking back on the threats to the open internet in 2010, the technology companies largely fended off the telcos and old media conglomerates. But as Cory Doctorow often says, every pirate wants to be an admiral. The tech companies just found ways to exert their own centralized control over the internet. It’s not primarily from the conglomerate supermonopoly that Wu warns about — though the acquisition and control of multiple marketplaces is real (see Netflix and Amazon) — but through harnessing the power of the internet’s network effects for monopoly, the internet that people use every day is large controlled by just a few, huge companies.
The dominant technology companies consume their competitors in their infancy, but they also make it really hard to leave. You can leave Facebook or Twitter/X for Mastodon or Bluesky, but you’re leaving a centralized, proprietary social media space for a balkanized one. You’re leaving your social networks behind. Sure, you and try to opt out of Google’s system, but to whom will you go? And how will you interface with the rest of the world? Microsoft’s monopoly came from 20th century practices of control and nasty competition, but Alphabet and Meta have updated those practices for the 21st century to find even more effective ways to get centralized control. Google’s vertical integration isn’t necessarily by controlling your hardware, ISP, and the online service, but by thorough vertical integration of the information ecosystem.
What does it matter who makes your hardware or who your mobile carrier is if you’re using Chrome, Gmail, Google Docs, Google Calendar, Google Pay, YouTube, Google Search, Gemini, Google Assistant, an Android mobile, Android Auto in your car, an Android Watch, a Google TV, Google Home, Google Drive instead of your own computer for all your files, Google Analytics spying on everyone who visits your website, and Google Maps for everywhere you go. And what’s the alternative? An Apple equivalent stack? Microsoft or Amazon? You have three or four vertically integration Big Tech options to chose from.
The internet is different, but in both a positive and negative way. It is the universal network, but the efficiencies that arise from centralized control are exponential.
The Cycle isn’t over. It’s still industrial warfare for the technology we rely on to communicate, but the weapons technology has advanced. Bell and Western Union were fighting with rifles and bayonets, AT&T was mowing down competitors with machine guns, but Google and Amazon are fighting with drones and an iron dome. It’s the same old battle, but with much more sophisticated weapons.
Wu’s final chapter calls for a Separations Principle as a response to the danger of private power and supermonopolies — a separation between major functions in the information economy. I think the fundamental challenge with separating markets today is that the definition of the market changes too quickly with advances in technology. What business is OpenAI even in and who are the competitors? That said, I’m sold on antitrust as a key part of the solution. Wu says, “the government’s only proper role is as a check on private power, never as an aid to it.” I think we also desperately need technological means to resist centralization, like Masnick’s call for protocols over platforms (like ActivityPub or AT Protocol) and even more local/personal control of LLMs and agents in his 2026 vision for a decentralized internet, or Cory Doctorow’s call for adversarial interoperability. And we need people willing to rebuild the internet we once loved.
Because the internet isn’t the end of the Cycle. The Master Switch is still relevant in 2026 because the Cycle is more alive today than ever before.

Every few years, I return to Michael Wesch’s talk, An anthropological introduction to YouTube. This year, what brought me there was actually an episode of This American Life referencing a songwriter who became popular on YouTube years back for her ukulele covers. I hadn’t heard the name in years, but immediately thought: Julia Nunes. I couldn’t quite remember her song, Balloons, but I remember how it felt – and when I found it, I was immediately back there.
Both of these videos were created in June 2008. The web was a different place. This was the year that Android was launched, and the iPhone was only a year old – the internet was still about the web, not app stores and social media algorithms. Looking back from the present age of reels and heavily produced video, what struck me watching these June 2008 YouTube videos was how raw they were. Julia used a slinky. The hero in Michael Wesch’s lecture at the Library of Congress was Gary Brolsma. The authenticity is endearing. It was June 2008 that my first few blogposts had just been published on Techdirt, because in the early days of Twitter, there was an online community that anyone could become a part of, even some undergrad who’d just started a blog. These were the copyfighting days when large corporations, on the heels of filesharing lawsuits against grandmas and laser printers, were trying to tame the web with digital locks and steep penalties criminalizing sharing, and internet users and internet companies were on the same side.
The internet was different then. I miss the open web.
Now, I get that I’m aging, and I’m acutely aware that my heartspace is steeped in nostalgia. As Cory Doctorow says Jim Griffin says: anything invented before you’re 20 was there forever, anything invented before you’re 30 is the coolest thing ever, and anything invented after that should be illegal. But as Cory Doctorow also says, everything has gotten suddenly worse: enshittification is everywhere online. (Okay, and reels probably should be illegal.)
It’s against this backdrop of nostalgia for the 2008 web that I’ve been reading Tim Wu’s 2010 book, The Master Switch. It’s been sitting in my pile of books to read since, well, 2010 or so, but I finally picked it up after attending an event with Tim Wu and Cory Doctorow in Toronto a few weeks ago about why the internet sucks now and what to do about it. Far from being outdated, The Master Switch is a fascinating read in 2026. During a time of much internet optimism and belief that the internet was open and resilient and different than those centralized 20th technologies, Wu and others were warning that each of those 20th century technologies had their period of openness before eventual corporate capture. The book is sadly prophetic.
This last decade has been very hard on my internet optimism. From being shattered by a deeper understanding of the trauma caused by the evil of pornography to being shaken by the widespread epistemic crisis and conspiracy thinking around me, most of that internet optimism has been dead, buried, and rolling over in the grave for years.
The spring of social media has also turned into the eternal winter of corporate capture, where the internet for most people consists of five giant websites full of screenshots of text of the other four. The Twitter network effect has been broken, but after a brief moment of hope for the fediverse, we’ve just seen a balkanization of social media. Whatever concerns about an algorithmic filter bubble, when people literally flock to platforms based on their ideology and political views, the entire chamber is the echo chamber. The mainstream platforms are full of engagement farming and ragebaiting, and segregated alternative spaces are full of complaints about their counterparts. Google has shifted from being a semi-protagonist for the open web in The Master Switch to becoming a nemesis, and after a moment of hope for software freedom, mobile computing and social media have brought about a free software dark age. Nevermind anything people are referring to as “AI” these days.
And, whatever the debates, as a parent, I do think there’s something substantive to the thesis of The Anxious Generation that we’ve replaced a play-based childhood with a phone-based childhood. Avoiding the problems of the present-day internet for my kids is an incredible challenge on its own.
This could be enough to send me into a full techlash – but every now and then, I get a glimpse of the internet I once loved.
Enter Molly White. When I heard her 2024 talk, Fighting for our web, I remember how I felt in 2008:
Do you remember the first time you felt like the web was magic? A lot of us, it’s probably been decades, right, that you’ve been on the web, so it might be hard to think of that very first moment, but there’s probably something that sticks out in your head. Take a second and just try to think about it.
For me, it was Neopets. How many of you played Neopets? Any Neopets people here? Awesome. So, I know it still exists—you can still go to Neopets.com today. I’m so afraid to ruin the nostalgia that I have not looked at what it is today. Hearing they were exploring NFTs a couple of years ago almost killed me.
But from what I remember of it, and bear with me because I was probably ten years old at the time, you would adopt these little cartoon pets, and you could feed them, and play with them, and buy things for them. And I honestly actually don’t remember that much about the gameplay aside from the fact that I think you could paint them different colors, and you fed them omelets for some reason.
Anyway, what I do really remember about Neopets was that every player got a profile page that was called a “user lookup.”
As far as I can remember, Neopets user lookups were the moment that the internet changed in my head from something with pages I could read and maybe games that I could play to something that I could change. What was once just a book on the shelf was now a canvas where I could create and write and remix.
I had already been drawn to computers even back when I thought it was sort of just a one-way street. I didn’t even realize how long I’ve loved computers until I unearthed this book that I made when I was five years old.
It was from, like, a little kit that you could send off and they would print out a book for you, and it was about my life, but I included in the “about the author” section that “for fun, Molly likes to play the computer.”
I have very similar childhood memories. I spent a lot of time exploring my family’s 486 (which is still operational in my basement today), and I remember using my parents’ laptops to dial up and talk about my dog on some online chat forum. My grade school “About the Author” blurbs would have mentioned “computers” too. It was in university that I discovered free software and GNU/Linux and began tinkering with alternatives to a proprietary ecosystem. It was a magical time for me, but it was also a magical time for computing and the open web.
I still see glimpses of that online today – like LibreArts, Ardour, Recording Revolution, or profound articles or meaningful conversations – but it’s increasingly hard to find that kind of authenticity online. Perhaps “podcasting” is the most “open” space these days, but it’s dominated by proprietary platforms and unintelligent (or grifting) influencers captured by their own audiences.
As Molly puts it, “as a lifelong lover of the web, it’s hard not to feel a little hopeless right now.” She says it’s tempting, amidst the decay, to yearn for the good old days of ICQ and whimsical GeoCities sites. “Some of this is nostalgia for our younger years… but some of this is certainly based in the feeling that the web was just better back then.”
Fewer trolls, and a lot fewer bots. Google search results that actually returned what you were looking for, not just the sites that paid the most. Cobbled-together blogs and LiveJournal pages written by people who felt authentic, who maybe wanted to attract more visitors to tick up their pageview counters or add entries to their guestbook pages, but who weren’t trying to cultivate a persona as an influencer or a thought leader, “build a brand”, or monetize their audience. More of a neighborhood feeling where everyone was a possible friend, and less fear that people might interpret your social media post as uncharitably as possible. The worry that the girl you were talking to might be a man pretending to be a girl, but probably not the fear that she’s a crypto romance scammer or part of a state-sponsored disinformation network. Fewer and less intrusive ads, less engagement farming, less surveillance. Fewer paywalls, more “information wants to be free”.
Molly describes how academics, first, and then, hobbyists, and then everybody came to the wide open fields of the web, but eventually large corporations figured out how to set up tolls, then put up walls, and after enticing people into the theme-park-like more “perfect places” they set up, they enshittified it to extract more value. But the place beyond the walls still exists.
We often forget: that world is still out there. […]
If we wanted, each of us could escape those walls and set up our own spaces within the limitless, fertile soil beyond. […] Though we now face a new challenge as the dominance of the massive walled gardens has become overwhelming, we have tools in our arsenal: the memories of once was, and the creativity of far more people than ever before, who entered the digital expanse but have grown disillusioned with the business moguls controlling life within the walls.
I want the web I once loved back. And I’m going to do my small part.
There is much to be done at a policy and movement/community level, and I’m returning some of my attention to that space in the months ahead. But I’m really writing this blog post as a note to self. On a personal level, I am committing to:
Replace attention given to secret algorithmic feeds of increasing garbage content with more time with my RSS reader, books, and podcasts (using AntennaPod)
Make goals for creative output: writing, music production, and a return to some coding
Foster in my kids a relationship with technology of creation not just consumption (no mobile computers or social media til 16+, only dumbphones for real world adventures, and GNU/Linux laptops with training to make things with tools like Kdenlive and Ardour)
I remember how the web once was – and I want it back.
I want to make stuff, not hate stuff. So that’s what I’m going to do.

Via Recording Revolution, this was some of the best recording advice I’ve come across in recent years.
The way to make better recordings is about learning to use the gear you already have, rather than buying new gear to try to improve your sound. Yes, I get that Graham Cochrane was trying to sell me courses instead of gear, but I bought access to the courses and they are so worth it – and he’s right about this.
I took this advice to heart, and it’s been freeing.
In 2006, I purchased a lot of gear to try to build a home recording studio — a desktop computer, an audio interface, studio monitors, and so many microphones. I used some of it, but then a lot of it sat dormant for a long time. I acquired another round of gear in 2014/2015, got a new audio interface, a MIDI keyboard, and a digital piano.
Yet, I was pretty frustrated with the recordings I was making during this time, especially compared to the high school recordings I was making with Cakewalk 8 from 1998 and RadioShack microphones plugged into the 1/8″ line input on my 2001 Win98 desktop’s built-in sound card.
Now that I’m focused on improving my audio production skills, I’m making use of old gear.
See, the Recording Revolution advice only half applies to me — I use free/libre software, so I don’t have to buy new software or plugins. In fact, I can use very new software on very old hardware.
This came together for me last spring when I wanted to try recording drums for the first time in a long time. My ~2015 audio interface only has two inputs, but my 2006 Presonus Firepod has eight — and I have six drum mics. But of the 30 computers I have in my house from the past 30 years, only one of them has the right type of firewire port — my 2006 home recording studio desktop. So I took that Intel Pentium D 2 GB of RAM device (stealing a third GB of RAM from a defunct computer) and reinstalled Xubuntu Studio with 64-bit 24.04 LTS. Then, I used that 2006 desktop and 2006 audio interface with 2024 software, like Ardour 8, and recorded drums for two songs. And it worked! (I’ll have some videos out soon.)
This philosophy fits will with my nostalgic approach to hardware. In my studio, I have a reading light from childhood repurposed as a backlight with an LED blub, a 1999 ThinkPad 240 repurposed as a digital picture frame, my 2006 desktop for drums and my primary laptop from 2017, a second and third monitor both from 2006 (though the third I just added in 2025), furniture spanning the last 35 years, amps from the 80s and musical instruments spanning the past 30 years (with the exception of my hundred-year-old violin). Also, I’ve learn that I can often use less of my gear, but use it well to get better results – like focusing on using my large diaphragm condenser well instead of fiddling with ribbon mics and pencil condensers or using multiple microphones when one will suffice.
I’ve realized I don’t need to buy new tech or music equipment. I don’t need new gear to sound better. I just need to get better at using the gear I already have. I’m focused on learning so I use my gear well, and I’m focused on habits so I’m doing it often. I’m using my existing gear, and using less of it, and getting better results.

I once believed that because the internet exposes people to new ideas, it helps us to think more carefully. I still believe it can, but the vast majority of the time, the internet paves the way to motivated reasoning.
One of the best descriptions I’ve read of motivated reasoning comes from Jonathan Haidt’s 2012 book The Righteous Mind (p. 98-99):
The social psychologist Tom Gilovich studies the cognitive mechanisms of strange beliefs. His simple formulation is that when we want to believe something, we ask ourselves, “Can I believe it?” Then… we search for supporting evidence, and if we find even a single piece of pseudo-evidence, we can stop thinking. We now have permission to believe. We have justification, in case anyone asks.
In contrast, when we don’t want to believe something, we ask ourselves, “Must I believe it?” Then we search for contrary evidence, and if we find a single reason to doubt the claim, we can dismiss it. You only need one key to unlock the handcuffs of must.
Psychologists now have file cabinets full of findings on “motivated reasoning,” showing the many tricks people use to reach the conclusions they want to reach. When subjects are told that an intelligence test gave them a low score, they choose to read articles criticizing (rather than supporting) the validity of IQ tests. When people read a (fictitious) scientific study that reports a link between caffeine consumption and breast cancer, women who are heavy coffee drinkers find more flaws in the study than do men and less caffeinated women. […] The difference between a mind asking “Must I believe it?” versus “Can I believe it?” is so profound that it even influences visual perception. Subjects who thought that they’d get something good if a computer flashed up a letter rather than a number were more likely to see the ambiguous figure as the letter B, rather than the number 13.
We ask, “can I believe this?” if we want to believe something, and “must I believe it?” if we want to disbelieve. When we frame the question like this, we only need one piece of evidence to support our desired conclusion.
The heading for this section of The Righteous Mind is “Reasoning (and Google) can take you wherever you want to go,” because all you need to do to find that one reason is to search the web for it. Anything that brain of yours can think can be found on the internet, so when we go looking for a reason, we will find one. The path to motivated reasoning is paved online.
It’s even worse though in the current era of consolidated corporate social media, where just a few private algorithms control the online public square. We don’t even need to go looking for the reasons to support our pre-determined conclusions. The reasons come looking for us.
When Charlie Kirk was murdered, I started to really notice the pattern. I saw people on the right thinking, “I bet the left is celebrating this,” and people would go looking and it wouldn’t be hard to find examples (“Can I believe this?”). I saw people on the left saying, “I bet the right is calling for violent retribution,” and people would go looking and it wouldn’t be hard to find examples (“Can I believe this?”). The people who go looking share their examples widely, and many other people see them without trying to search for them. More recently, I’ve seen the same phenomenon with the killing of Alex Pretti. Frankly, you see it on any big story, and in little ways every day. I’m not saying it’s never valid to criticize what your political opponents are saying or doing, but people go looking for examples — and of course they will find them somewhere. If you believe your opponents are evil, and you go looking for some examples from someone on the other side (“Can I believe this?”), you’re going to find it on the internet.
I see this more and more in our balkanized social media landscape. People on the service formerly known as Twitter go to Bluesky just to search for examples of silly things they think people will be pearl clutching or sanctimonious about, and of course you’ll find some examples of it. People on Bluesky share screenshots from “the bird site” of the bottom of the barrel stuff they expect to find there, and of course the worst screenshots will circulate. (And people in the fediverse mock the trashiest stuff from Twitter/X and the self-righteousness smug from Bluesky on Mastodon.)
I think it’s perfectly valid to check what leaders on the other side of an issue are saying, or to try to get a sense of what the average person who disagrees with you thinks. I’m not criticizing that. Rather, I’m criticizing the tendency that I see far more often — maybe that gets spread more through the algorithmic filter because of its rage-bait potential — to cherry-pick examples of the awful things you imagine your opponents to be saying as if it’s representative, in order to validate predetermined conclusions that they’re obviously evil.
If you imagine someone who disagrees with you probably believes EvilThingX, and then you go looking for examples of that on the internet, you will find examples. The internet is a confirmation bias machine.
Even if you don’t go looking but you follow people who do, you will see it. And, increasingly, even if you don’t follow the people who go looking and post it, you’ll still probably see it in your feed on mainstream social media, because that’s what generates views and engagement. The internet is a confirmation bias machine.
I’m writing this post as much for myself as for anyone else who cares about thinking carefully and finding the truth, rather than just dunking on the other guys. It’s so easy to fall into this way of thinking. The path to motivated reasoning is paved in the current social media landscape.
What can we do about it? First, we need to notice the pattern so we can be conscious of it. Am I falling into the can / must method of motivating reasoning? Am I asking myself the right question? Or just the question that will lead to the conclusion I want?
Second, as we notice the pattern, I think we need the counterweight of steelmanning our opponents arguments. In a way, this is all just the age-old phenomenon of strawmanning, which is obviously not unique to the internet. But the internet makes it so easy. In fact, it has come to seem like the internet makes it the default — fuelling polarization, conspiracy thinking, eisegesis, contempt for the “other side,” and the worse demons of our nature.
But it doesn’t have to be our default. You can choose steelmanning over strawmanning. If you find yourself looking for examples of the worst from your opponents, maybe check to see if there are also examples of the best — or go looking for something that might surprise you or challenge your assumptions. If you find yourself asking, “can I believe this?”, also challenge yourself with “must I believe this?” — or vice versa. Reverse the question on yourself to challenge your predetermined conclusion before you make your mind up for good.
The internet is a confirmation bias machine. We need to understand and be conscious of that if we want to avoid constant confirmation bias and motivated reasoning in our own thinking.

In fact, I’m not sure if I’ve ever bought more than one keyboard – aside from purchasing three of the excellent Logitech K400s for my family room, tabling, etc. I’ve always just had old spare keyboards lying around my house or my parents’ place whenever I needed to setup a docking station or something. The one $10 keyboard I bought, however, was a year ago when setting up a new triple-monitor workstation that I now use frequently… and, while I’ve gotten used to the keyboard, it just felt cheap.
So, when the Microsoft Curve 2000 keyboard used in my home studio KVM docking station started to die on me this month, I was hesitant to grab another $10 solution. After a few days of going back and forth… I ended up taking a little dive into the world of mechanical keyboards, and I fell hard for a Keychron K10 HE with wood and metal frames that was on sale (with a discount four times larger than the amount I spent on my last keyboard purchase!). I got sold on the look, the feel, and the customization potential – both in hardware and software.
That made it very disappointing when the WebHID settings editor at launcher.keychron.com could not connect to my K10 in GNU/Linux. It kept saying “[X] HID device connected” as an error message, and I couldn’t get past the connect page. I spent the last hour trying to solve it, and I’m writing up the solution to save someone else an hour.
Custom udev rule to the rescue
I figured this out courtesy of this PSA for GNU/Linux users on r/keychron. The problem is that GNU/Linux has sane security measure in place, so a userspace application can’t just write to a hardware input device. But there is a solution – you need to give yourself permission to do that with a custom udev. rule.
The PSA already includes most of these steps, but I want to share the exact udev rule I used in Debian 12, in case that’s helpful to anyone.
First, I used lsub to confirm the vendor ID and product ID showing on my K10:
balleyne@exponentia:~$ lsusb | grep -i keychron
Bus 001 Device 082: ID 3434:0ea0 Keychron Keychron K10 HE
The Vendor ID is 3434 and the Product ID is 0ea0. My username (and personal group) is balleyne, and I only need to grant myself, access, so here’s the udev rule I created at /etc/udev/rules.d/99-keychron.rules:
You’ll want to verify the VID/PID of your device, and change the username to your own.
Then, I ran the two commands from the PSA to reload the rules and trigger them:
sudo udevadm control --reload-rules sudo udevadm trigger
Et voila! Now, when I go to launcher.keychron.com and connect to my device, it works!

It wasn’t just the music though. Part of what mesmerized me is that the album was practically a one-man show. Ben Folds wrote, recorded, and produced the songs, playing virtually all of the instruments – piano, vocals, keyboards, guitars, bass guitar, and drums.
I wanted to be able to do that one day.
Rockin’ the Suburbs was Ben Folds’ solo debut, after his band broke up (though, at least they didn’t re-form without him…). About 15-18 years ago, my bandfizzled out, and two other things happened around the same time. First, I got engaged, married, and started a family, which meant less time for my own music for a while. Second, I went through a significant conversion on software freedom, leading to my commitment to a free/libre software/culture approach to music.
That was a long time ago, and I’ve barely produced any of my own music since. What have I been up to musically? Well, a lot, actually. But very little of it was my own. And part of the problem is that I set a pretty intense standard for myself: I want to use free software to produce freely licensed music.
That’s not as easy as it sounds.
Taking a free culture approach to music means, for example, no royalties. In effect, that means no collaboration – because it’s very unlikely I’d ever find another musician to collaborate with who shares the same commitment. Legally, in practice, it’s not a “per song” question, but that means avoiding the automatic copyright assignment that is a standard part of membership with a PRO – and thus avoiding songwriting or performances from musicians who haven’t made the same rare decision. While I can collaborate without permission with other free culture artists – like Brad Sucks or Josh Woodward – that’s not the same as making music together.
The Rockin’ the Suburbs approach started to become very interesting again. What if an entire album is a solo effort?
There’s still a second problem though – the software tools. Back in 2007, I left Windows and swore off proprietary software, as much as possible.
From 1999-2008, I was using Cakewalk as my recording and arranging software. Leaving Windows and proprietary software meant finding an entirely new software ecosystem. I did find Ubuntu Studio, and later KXStudio (as I switched to Debian), but there was a steep learning curve. In hindsight, I realized the problem was that I was going through two major transitions at the same time: an entirely new software stack, as well as a new musical style (more folk than rock). For a long time, I just felt lost and incompetent. Though, around 2015, I went through a bit of a revival and growth spurt in my learning aided by libremusicproduction.com (now librearts.org), but I still wasn’t very good at recording or mixing. It was frustrating, because I was getting decent results as a total amateur with no professional gear in high school, but I couldn’t get anywhere with more experience, and more gear.
I had a lot going on in my life over the past 15 years, and I took on a lot with the standard I set for myself. No music collaborators? Okay, I’m the songwriter, vocalist, guitarist, pianist, violinist, bassist, drummer, and more… Free software? Okay, I’m going to have to figure out how to score, record, edit, mix, and produce my own music – nevermind lighting, filming, editing, etc for anyvideo. And in 2025, I’m still fighting it…
But maybe, I just needed time. I think I’m finally getting the hang of it – and I’ve got a theory of change to build enough experience and competence out of my home studio over the next 2-3 years to start recording and producing the music I’ve been writing for the last 20.
Discovering Recording Revolution during the pandemic was a game-changer, especially because of the software-agnostic approach and home studio focus. I can easily apply what I’ve learned from Total Home Recording and Mixing University directly in Ardour, even though the courses use Pro Tools. I’ve been using Ardour since 2008, but now I feel like I’m really starting to actually use it — and over the past 6 months, I’ve upgraded from 5.x to 7.x now to the latest 8.x.
I’ve been settling into my software stack. KXStudio and the Liquorix kernel have helped optimized my Debian system for audio. DrumGizmo gives me powerful sampled drums, and I’ve only begun to explore the array of other LV2 synths and samplers. One thing that did work very well for me from about 2008 or 2009 onwards was Rosegarden for music notation for strings (especially since it was easy to score against an audio file). However, MuseScore is definitely the modern standard, and I’ll be exploring that soon.
During my 2015 growth spurt, I also ordered one of the first MOD Duo devices, but never got around to experimenting with it for more than a day – in part, because the software wasn’t very good yet. Well, I finally spent some time with it over this past Christmas break, and figured out how to upgrade the firmware a decade forward and the game changed again. This embedded computer runs all the free software plugins I’ve been playing around with on my laptop for the past 10 years, but in a stomp box – making it easy to connect my Telecaster or my violin, etc. In Recording Revolution terms, I’ve found a core tool to create an infinite studio rack. For live performances, I’ve realized I can pack the tools I use on my laptop into a stomp box. I’ve had this little device full of free software sitting on a shelf for a decade, and now I’ve finally started to unleash its power.
Enamoured by the Boomerang looper pedal, I found SooperLooper and a SoftStep to be an incredibly powerful combination. I can use my SoftStep2 with my MOD Duo as well to provide additional controls. On the video editing side of things, I’ve been using Kdenlive and am still getting to know it better.
I’m finally getting the hang of these tools and building meaningful competency. But it takes creating a lot of not so great stuff before you get good. Maybe it’s a strange way to tell you, but I have a theory of change to do just that: I’m going to produce 50 songs in the next 2-3 years, not all of which I’ll share, but all of which will be incremental steps towards using these tools better, and developing these skills further – so that, one day, after working for 25 years, I can produce an entire album on my own.

One of the smallest ThinkPads ever made back in 1999, this is a vintage ThinkPad.
It’s still operational today – after replacing a failed hard drive. It has an Intel Celeron 300Mhz processor (Mendocino), and 192 MB of RAM (though max capacity is 1 GB). One power adapter was dead, but I actually have two ThinkPad 240 machines (the other is toast) and multiple power adapters.
My idea was to use it as a digital picture frame for my home recording studio. But it’s a challenge to install GNU/Linux on because it has no CD/DVD drive, no WiFi or ethernet (though I have a USB-to-ethernet adaptor from the early 2000s), and only one non-bootable USB port. It does have an external floppy disk drive though!
What should have worked in theory is using the floppy to boot from USB. Damn Small Linux has a bootable floppy, and once booted, you can boot from USB, e.g. the Debian 12 i386 DVD image (since I would not have internet access during the install if the one USB port is being used to boot). I vaguely recall doing this back in 2008 or so and getting Fluxbuntu 7.10 operational, just as a hobby project experiment.
However, I could not get it to boot from USB. I thought maybe the floppy disk was corrupted, and there was an issue with the floppy or the drive I was using. But even after purchasing a new floppy disk USB drive, it would still fail to boot from USB after booting the DSL floppy. Then I figured out there was something wrong with the USB port… How could I install with no internet and just a floppy drive?
That part was actually easy: pop the hard drive out, use another computer to install Debian with Fluxbox on it, and put the hard drive back in. But… what good is that if I can’t connect to the internet, or can’t transfer any files back and forth via network or USB or CD and am limited to a floppy disk?
Solution: the PCI card slot! First, I thought this was my dad moment of hoarding finally being useful. I still have a WiFi PCI card from my first laptop in 2003! I found it within 5 minutes, however, I spent a few hours trying unsuccessfully to get the driver to work in GNU/Linux (I was a Windows XP user in 2003). There should be a way to get it to work, but instead I just purchased a used PCI card with four USB ports off eBay for $30, and used that to connect the USB to ethernet adapter and get the machine online.
Then, my 1999 IBM ThinkPad 240 with 192 MB of RAM was online, and running a 2024 OS.
The default display resolution is wrong. I figured out how to fix it with an xrandr command after startx, but haven’t bothered figuring out how to change the default, so I just run this each time I log in:
xrandr -s 800x600
From there, I rsynced my folder of prepared photos, and use a bash script to launch a slideshow with feh.
feh -FrYZz -D 10 path/to/photos/
I could still probably find a way to get the wireless PCI adapter working, but I don’t need regular internet access. I only need occasional network access to rsync the photos folder if I make changes. So I’ll leave that project for another day – or decade.

Because I thought I only had one display port (HDMI), I went searching for USB display adapters.
(I just realized today that my ThinkPad T470 has a USB-C / Thunderbolt 3 port that I’ve ignored for seven and a half years… if I’d known that, I would have just got a USB-C cable for the second external monitor!)
I settled on a Plugable USB-VGA-165 specifically because it’s an older device that uses an older DisplayLink chipset (DL-165), which I read does not require the proprietary Synaptics driver to work in GNU/Linux, but rather works with a libre driver. I plugged it into several Ubuntu 24.04 LTS laptops, and it just worked. But on my Debian 12 laptops, it would only display a green screen and was not recognized in GNOME as an external display.
I spent about 3 hours in search of a solution, trying to figure out what I needed to install to get it to work. However, after compared dmesg and lsmod output in Debian vs Ubuntu, I figured out that I already had the driver I needed, but I just needed to disable another driver to get it to load.
I decided to try that based on a lot of back and forth with DuckDuckGo, Google, and ChatGPT, and comparing the dmesg output between my Ubuntu and Debian systems.
In Ubuntu GNU/Linux (where it was working), this is what my dmesg output looked like when I plugged in the USB-VGA-165:

I’ve made the relevant lines bold: My Ubuntu system was using udl (via DRM), whereas my Debian system was using udlfb (without DRM). (I also learned today that, in this context, DRM stands for the Linux kernel’s Direct Rendering Manager subsystem – not Digital Restrictions Management). So, when I saw the Debian Jessie instructions to blacklist udlfb as an older driver compared to the newer udl, it made sense — Ubuntu was using udl and it was working, whereas Debian was using udlfb and it wasn’t. And disabling udlfb worked! No more green screen.
I’m posting this because most of the other resources I found were very unhelpful, guidance on evdi-dkms or the proprietary Synpatic driver, none of which applies to this old DL-165 chipset or is necessary or relevant. udl is sufficient, you just need to manually blacklist the older udlfb in Debian so it doesn’t get confused.
I hope this saves someone else some time. Meanwhile, now that I realize I’ve been sitting with an ignored USB-C / Thunderbolt 3 port for seven and a half years, I’m looking up USB-C display cables for my other new triple monitor setup…

I got away without buying a new printer since 2008 or 2010… until today. I bought an HP printer, because I’ve used HP printers for a long time, and mainly because of the existence of hplip.
My goal, after all, is to have no nonsense printing and scanning using only free software, if at all possible.
This isn’t going to be a detailed “how to” for just any user, so much as a quick post on how to find the hidden web-based administration interface to save advanced GNU/Linux users the hour of their lives that I lost tonight. (And — who am I kidding — it’s mostly a rant.)
All of the setup instructions and online help I could find said you need to use the proprietary HP Smart app in Android/iOS, or download some proprietary install program on a Mac OS X or Windows computer. Not gonna happen. I don’t run Google Play on my Android, only have ancient Windows/Mac computers for reference, and have absolutely no intention of using some printer that requires an app to function. Gone are the days of the HP OfficeJet J4680, where you can configure the thing using an LCD display. However, based on a recent experience with Linksys Velop, I figured that there must be some hidden web-based administration system. Linksys had the same nonsense about the app being necessary for setup/management, but on the phone with their tech support, sure enough I discovered there was an old-fashioned web-based administration interface (referenced by none of their support documentation…).
The same is true for this printer.
After many unsuccessful attempts to configure this thing, here’s how I found the hidden admin interface:
On my laptop, I connected to the temporary direct WiFi network generated by the printer: “HP=Setup<93_Envy 6400 series” (or something like that)
In the terminal, I ran ip a and determined that my laptop IP address on the HP Setup network was 192.168.223.101. Which meant…

Boom. From there, using the PIN inside the printer as the password (which it instructed me to do), I was able to sign in and get administrative access, and then run through the wireless setup wizard to connect the device to my own network, as well as to customize all sorts of others settings via the same interface. It’s very straightforward, once you know how to get to the web interface.
Basically, HP Smart can go off and die somewhere. You don’t need it to setup this printer, despite what all of the documentation tells you over and over again. 123.hp.com specifically told me that printer setup wasn’t possible from GNU/Linux. Who’s laughing now?!
For bonus points, it worked in Debian 10 via WiFi first try without me even having to install anything. (Granted, I’ve used hplip on this machine in the past, in case that matters. It’s apparently a “driverless” printer? What is this sorcery…)
