What’s exactly happening with Dead Island 2’s development?

Not all that long ago, it seemed that development on the latest (and first numbered) Dead Island sequel was proceeding swimmingly. Sure there were some delays, but that’s true of tons of big name titles these days, and it certainly looked as though DI2 was doing well.

As a DI fan myself, I was pretty happy with the way that the game was shaping up. With a Californian setting that promised to bring Dead Island’s particular brand of zombie apocalypse to the shores of the United States, and some celebrity voice work behind it, I was excited. It also looked pretty awesome graphically, which is of course something that you’d want to see.

All that seems like it might be scrapped in part (or maybe in whole) since Deep Silver has announced that they’ll be parting ways with developer Yager. No reason is given as to what’s happened to cause this rift, or what will be happening with the still hotly anticipated game in the future either. In fact, really nothing was said about it – here’s the whole statement, as it appears in the press release:

“With Dead Island 2, Deep Silver has always been dedicated to delivering the sequel that Dead Island fans deserve.

After careful consideration, today we announce the decision to part ways with development partner YAGER.

We will continue working towards bringing our vision of Dead Island 2 to life, and we will share further information at a later stage.”

So, at the very least, I’d expect to not see much on Dead Island 2 for a while. A good long while perhaps, as Deep Silver gets a new dev team on board and overhauls the project as they deem necessary. Sit tight DI fans, we’ll have more on this one as it breaks.

Yes, Dead Island 2 is living the dream. And that dream is beating zombie’s heads in with a baseball bat in the golden state.

Developer Yager certainly looks to be taking and running with the Dead Island blood-soaked football. Taking the reigns from Techland, who developed the first game and Dead Island Riptide, Yager has its first zombie apocalypse set in California. That alone opens up all sorts of new gameplay possibilities for the extreme, melee-fest, including more residential neighborhoods and more than one famous landmark, as you can see in the trailer.

Still a little ways off, the undead march again when Dead Island 2 drops in this coming Spring for the Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
