With the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) rise to power in India, anti-Muslim rhetoric and discriminatory measures have been increasing. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, such rhetoric has reached an unprecedented peak, with Muslims subjected daily to hate speech, racist attacks, and violence. Driving these developments is the Hindutva ideology which reflects the tangled intersection of nation-building and Hinduism, dating back to the foundation of the India nation-state.

The contributions in this series will discuss Indian Islamophobia through an examination of the past, present, and future dynamics of Indian nationalism and secularism. They will also highlight the interplay between nationalism, communalism, and secularism that is at the core of modern Indian politics. The overarching question centers around the conditions for social influence on Hindu nationalism today.

The Berkley Forum asks: What are the cultural and religious reasons for the shift from secular to Hinduist India? What is the Love Jihad campaign, and how does it shed light on the dynamics of community and nationalism specific to the Hindutva movement? What is the role of the media in spreading Hindu nationalism?

Posted by the University of Pittsburgh:

The total death toll in the post-9/11 war zones of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria,
and Yemen could be at least 4.5-4.6 million and counting, though the precise mortality
figure remains unknown. Some of these people were killed in the fighting, but far more,
especially children, have been killed by the reverberating effects of war, such as the spread
of disease. These latter indirect deaths – estimated at 3.6-3.7 million – and related health
problems have resulted from the post-9/11 wars’ destruction of economies, public
services, and the environment. Indirect deaths grow in scale over time. Though in 2021 the
United States withdrew military forces from Afghanistan, officially ending a war that began
with its invasion 20 years prior, today Afghans are suffering and dying from war-related
causes at higher rates than ever.

This report examines the devastating toll of war on human health, whoever the
combatant, whatever the compounding factor, in the most violent conflicts in which the U.S.
government has been engaged in the name of counterterrorism since September 11, 2001,
including in the above countries as well as Libya and Somalia. The report does not focus on
attributing responsibility to particular warring parties over others, or to disentangling
various intensifying factors, such as the actions of authoritarian governments, related
political upheavals, global economic sanctions, climate change, environmental disasters, or
the accumulating devastations of previous wars. Rather than teasing apart who, what, or
when is to blame, this report will show that the post-9/11 wars are implicated in many
kinds of deaths. In a place like Afghanistan, the pressing question is whether any death can
today be considered unrelated to war.2 Ultimately, the impacts of the ongoing violence are
so vast and complex that they are unquantifiable.

In laying out how the post-9/11 wars have led to illness and indirect deaths, the
report’s goal is to build greater awareness of the fuller human costs of these wars and
support calls for the United States and other governments to alleviate the ongoing losses
and suffering of millions in current and former war zones. The report highlights many long-term and underacknowledged consequences of war for human health, emphasizing that some groups, particularly women and children, suffer the brunt of these ongoing impacts.

Over the past decade, India has experienced a dangerous rise in Islamophobia. There are near daily episodes of harassment, public beatings and mob assaults, destruction of property, and lynchings that have created an atmosphere of fear for the country’s 200+ million Muslims.

The rise in this bigotry has largely come into being with the election of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a right-wing Hindu nationalist party. Videos of BJP politicians and right-wing Hindu religious leaders calling on Hindus to bear arms and to kill Muslims have become a normal feature in Modi’s India, where the Prime Minister has failed to condemn such rhetoric or speak out against the rising instability and divisions within society. The inaction and appeasement by the judiciary, law enforcement, and senior levels of government has signaled to the followers of Hindutva, a far-right political ideology that advocates for Hindu supremacy, that those in power support their efforts to carry out their mission of making India a Hindu-only nation. With this, the threat of mass atrocities is growing and becoming a dangerous reality.

This report examines the situation in India utilizing Gregory Stanton’s 10 stages of genocide, and finds that examples of the first 8 stages of genocide are present in India. Currently, the country is teetering at stage 8 (persecution) with the indicators of stage 9 (extermination) becoming more and more visible. Islamophobia has been central to the BJP and the Hindu nationalist movement, as their goals are reliant on the subordination and dehumanization of Indian Muslims.

We believe that education is the most important part of a young person’s life, and we want to help facilitate healthy and supportive classrooms for all students,” said Jennifer Nimer, CAIR-Columbus executive director.
The Educator’s Guide contains information about some common Islamic religious practices such as types of dress, dietary restrictions, daily prayer times, and major holidays. It also explains some of the legal responsibilities of public schools under both Ohio and federal law, and suggests some common ways that Muslim students and families can be accommodated in the classroom.

A recent survey conducted by the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding (IPSU) found that 42 percent of Muslim students in grades K-12 have reported bullying because of their faith. Even more alarming was the finding that one-in-four bullying incidents of Muslim students involved a teacher or school official.
