At this release, we focused on improving the search experience, making it easier to find places and discover objects around a specific location. We also added the ability to attach media files to Favorites and Waypoints, making them more informative and useful for your travels.
Thanks to all our users for their feedback and suggestions. Your input is invaluable in helping us improve OsmAnd and make it the best navigation app for Android.
We introduced a refreshed Search interface designed to make finding places faster and easier.
You can now quickly choose where to search — around the Map Center or My Location — and select how results should be sorted: by Nearest or Relevance.
It is also easier to narrow down the results by selecting one or multiple POI categories, so you can focus only on the places you are interested in.
The updated interface makes Search more flexible, easier to understand, and faster to use.
The Search History menu now gives you more control over what is displayed.

The History settings menu also includes an option to back up your history, helping you preserve your previous searches and navigation activity, make back up as file or clear all history.
We've made Favorites and Waypoints more informative by allowing you to attach media files directly to them.
Similar to the Audio/Video Notes feature, you can now add photos, videos, and audio notes to a saved Favorite or GPX Waypoint. You can take a new photo, record a video or audio note, or choose existing media from your device.
Attached files are displayed in a new Media section directly in the Favorite or Waypoint context menu, so photos and recordings connected to a place are easy to access when you need them.
This makes Favorites and Waypoints useful not only for saving a location, but also for keeping additional visual or audio information connected to that place.
Managing large collections of Favorites is now much easier.
Favorites can now be organized using folders and subfolders, similar to the folder structure already available for Tracks. This allows you to create a clear hierarchy instead of keeping all Favorite groups at the same level.
For example, you can organize places like this:
Netherlands / Amsterdam / Museums
or create even deeper folder structures when needed.
In My Places → Favorites, folders are displayed separately from individual Favorite points. You can create new folders, rename them, and move Favorites between folders and subfolders.
The full folder path is also shown where it is useful, including the Favorite context menu, making it easier to understand where a saved place belongs. For long folder structures, OsmAnd automatically shortens the path while keeping the most important folder names visible.
You can also pin important folders for quicker access to the Favorite groups you use most often.
The new hierarchy is supported when moving and exporting Favorites and works with OsmAnd Cloud synchronization, while preserving the existing file-based Favorites structure.
We introduce new appearance settings for map widgets, giving you more control over how information is displayed on the map.
Instead of configuring widgets only individually, you can now customize the appearance of each widget panel — Left, Right, Top, and Bottom — from a dedicated Appearance screen.
For each panel, you can adjust:
A live preview shows how the selected settings will look directly while you configure them.
For custom colors, Day and Night modes can be configured separately, helping keep widgets readable with different map styles and lighting conditions.
You can also copy appearance settings from another widget panel or another profile, making it easier to keep a consistent layout across different OsmAnd profiles.
OsmAnd 5.4 brings another major update to 3D Buildings, making cityscapes more detailed and closer to the real-world geometry stored in OpenStreetMap.
Buildings can now display different roof shapes instead of being rendered only as simple flat-topped volumes. When the corresponding roof information is available in OpenStreetMap, OsmAnd uses it to create a more recognizable building silhouette.
Rendering of complex buildings and building parts has also been improved. OsmAnd now handles structures divided into multiple building:part elements more accurately, including cases where only building:levels information is available instead of an explicit height.
We also improved the rendering of buildings created from relations and multipolygons, fixing cases where individual sections or lower parts of complex structures could be missing from the 3D model.
These changes make landmarks and detailed urban areas significantly more realistic when exploring the map in 3D.

We expand support for coordinate systems, making the app more useful for professional mapping, field work, surveying, amateur radio, and other activities that rely on specific coordinate formats.
You can now use EPSG coordinate systems and the Maidenhead Locator System across different parts of OsmAnd, including:
In Coordinate Search, you can select recently used formats or browse the full list of available coordinate systems. You can also quickly find the required system by searching for its name or EPSG code.
The Maidenhead Locator System is also supported on Android. It represents locations using a compact combination of letters and numbers and is commonly used by amateur radio operators.
Coordinate formats can be configured separately for each OsmAnd profile. You can choose a Primary coordinate format, add other formats to the list, reorder them, or remove formats you do not need.
OsmAnd 5.4 improves navigation in situations where a route crosses regions with outdated or inconsistent offline maps.
Previously, route calculation could be interrupted by several dialogs asking you to update maps or manually continue using the downloaded maps. In some cases, this could even happen during route recalculation while navigation was already active.
Now, OsmAnd can handle these situations more smoothly. If the selected routing method cannot calculate the route correctly, the app can switch to an alternative calculation method and continue navigation without unnecessary interruptions.
You can also control this behaviour manually in:
Navigation settings → Route parameters → Route calculation method
Here, you can choose the preferred routing calculation method depending on your needs.
This makes route calculation more reliable when travelling across map borders or when not all downloaded maps were updated at the same time.
OsmAnd 5.4 brings several improvements to Android Auto, making the search, and navigation experience more convenient on the car display.
Search results in Android Auto now show more information at a glance.
For POIs, OsmAnd can display opening hours in a compact format, together with distance and address information. This makes it easier to see whether a restaurant, shop, fuel station, or another place is currently open before selecting it as your destination.
Address presentation has also been simplified for nearby POIs, reducing unnecessary information on the limited Android Auto screen.
Navigation controls have also been refined. The X button next to the ETA now correctly stops the active navigation, making it easier to finish a trip directly from the Android Auto interface.
We also fixed interface issues on the arrival screen, including the duplicated Search button that could appear after reaching a destination.
Together, these changes make Android Auto cleaner and easier to use while keeping important map, search, and navigation information accessible on the road.
The Astronomy plugin continues to grow in OsmAnd 5.4 with new tools for exploring solar and lunar eclipses directly on the Star Map.
You can now explore solar eclipses around the world and see how an eclipse develops over time.
The new Solar Eclipse Explorer shows the eclipse shadow on the map and provides a timeline that you can move through to see how the event changes. Information is calculated for the selected location, making it possible to check whether and how the eclipse will be visible there.
You can also quickly switch between previous and next solar eclipses and explore their paths in different parts of the world.
The Star Map now also includes a dedicated Lunar Eclipse Explorer, supporting:
The eclipse timeline shows the different stages of the event, while the visualization demonstrates how the Moon moves through the Earth's penumbra and umbra.
You can check the current eclipse phase, obscuration, Moon altitude, and where the eclipse is visible. A dedicated visibility layer on the map helps show the regions where the Moon is above the horizon during the event.
Together, these additions turn the Astronomy plugin into a useful tool not only for exploring stars and planets, but also for planning and observing upcoming eclipses.
OsmAnd 5.4 brings several improvements to the Vessel Tracker (AIS) plugin, making it easier to configure AIS connections and monitor nearby vessels.
The plugin settings have been reorganized into clearer sections for Connection, Object visibility, and Collision avoidance alarms (CPA).
You can configure AIS data reception using TCP or UDP, with connection information and status displayed directly in the interface.
New Object visibility settings give you more control over outdated AIS targets. You can define when a vessel should be marked as outdated and how long it should remain visible on the map after its signal is lost.
The Collision Avoidance Alarm (CPA) settings have also been redesigned. You can configure:
When another vessel is predicted to come too close within the configured time, OsmAnd can highlight it as a potential collision risk.
AIS visibility can also be managed as a dedicated map layer through Configure Map, making it easier to enable or disable vessel information when needed.
Experimental feature: In OsmAnd 5.4 for Android, the new Spatial Search is disabled by default. To enable it, go to: OsmAnd Development plugin → Use spatial text search. This allows us to collect feedback and continue improving the search experience before enabling it by default in a future release.
Previously, search was largely tied to your current location and the way individual words in a query were interpreted. The new approach takes geographical context into account, making combinations such as a place name + POI, category, street, or address much easier to understand.
For example, you can find a city or another place first and then search for cafés, restaurants, hotels, shops, fuel stations, or other POIs around that location. This is especially useful when planning a trip somewhere else instead of searching only near your current position.
The new search engine also improves how OsmAnd handles more complex queries, including combinations such as "Hotel Berlin", a POI together with a street or city, different street-name formats, translated category names, and other location-based searches.
Under the hood, this is more than an interface update. Our backend team introduced a new search architecture called Spatial Search by Name, designed to provide more relevant results and resolve many limitations of the previous search system. Search by supported POI categories has also been optimized for faster results.
More track details in What's Here. Track information now makes it easier to distinguish between tracks on the map, including identifying the folder where a track is stored.
More icons for profiles. The profile icon selection has been expanded, giving you more options to visually distinguish profiles for activities such as running and other use cases.
Extended AIDL support for external apps. External apps and plugins can now organize their OsmAnd widgets into groups and use custom widget icons, providing more flexibility for third-party integrations.
Correct altitude on Android 16. Fixed an issue where OsmAnd could display ellipsoidal altitude instead of altitude above mean sea level (MSL) on Android 16 devices.

This update brings a redesigned My Places interface, a rebuilt Plan a Route tool, the new Astronomy plugin, and many other improvements and bug fixes.
The My Places screen has been redesigned with a new segmented interface, making it easier to switch between Favorites, Tracks, OSM Edits, and Travel Guides.
Favorites now use a folder-based structure with support for subfolders. Folders are organized into Pinned, Visible, and Hidden sections, and frequently used folders can be pinned to the top. Each folder displays useful statistics, including the number of subfolders and points, modification date, and storage size. New sorting options allow folders and points to be arranged by name, date, or distance.
Updated action menus provide quicker access to Show on map, Pin or unpin, Rename, Appearance, Share, Move, and Delete. Favorites and entire folders can also be added to Map markers, a Track, or Navigation. Selection mode makes it possible to apply actions to multiple folders and points at once.
Tracks provides access to saved, recorded, and imported GPX files from the same redesigned My Places interface, with search, sorting, folder management, statistics, and quick actions for working with individual tracks or multiple selected items.
OSM Edits keeps your OpenStreetMap edits, notes, and uploaded changes in a dedicated section. This tab is available when the OSM Editing plugin is enabled.
Travel Guides contains bookmarked travel articles and guides, allowing saved travel content to be accessed directly from My Places. The tab appears when multiple guides have been bookmarked.
The new search interface also makes Favorites easier to find by displaying their folder, distance, address, and creation date directly in the results.
The Plan a Route tool has been rebuilt with a new interface for creating, editing, and analyzing routes.
Separate Route + and + POI actions let you add route points or named waypoints and points of interest. Individual route segments can use different routing types, allowing you to combine, for example, cycling, walking, and straight-line sections within the same track.
The new panel includes three sections:
When elevation data is unavailable, it can be calculated using nearby roads or downloaded Terrain maps. The updated route summary also displays distance, estimated travel time, arrival time, elevation gain, and elevation loss.
Quick actions provide access to undo and redo, change segment order, reverse the route, append it to an existing track, save a copy, clear all points, or start navigation directly along the planned track.
The Astronomy plugin is now available on iOS. It provides an interactive Star Map with stars, constellations, the Sun, the Moon, planets, nebulae, star clusters, and other deep-sky objects.
Explore celestial objects using categories, catalogs, and the Watch now section. Detailed object information, visibility graphs, daily paths, direction indicators, Favorites, and a weekly observation schedule help you find objects and choose the best time for stargazing.
Enabled plugin (Menu → Plugins → Astronomy) → Menu → Star map
The new Terrain Shadows visualization provides real-time dynamic shading based on 3D terrain geometry. Unlike raster Hillshade maps, the shadows are generated directly on the device and automatically adapt to the current map perspective.
This visualization makes mountains, valleys, ridges, and other terrain features easier to distinguish while maintaining a low impact on performance. 3D Relief is required and is enabled automatically when Terrain Shadows is selected.

OsmAnd 5.4 for iOS introduces a built-in Color Palette Editor for customizing how track data and terrain layers are displayed.
For Tracks, you can create custom palettes for Speed, Altitude, and Slope coloring. Choose between:
Custom palettes are also available for Terrain visualizations. You can modify the color scale used for Slope and Altitude, assign colors to specific elevation levels or slope percentages, and add or remove value steps. Hillshade uses a fixed shading algorithm and does not support custom palettes.
You can now choose from the complete collection of OsmAnd icons when creating or editing a profile. The redesigned icon selector uses grouped categories and includes the same icons available for Favorites, making profiles easier to identify and personalize.
OsmAnd 5.4 includes several fixes and improvements for Apple CarPlay.
The 10-day free CarPlay trial has been restored after an issue that could prevent it from working correctly in recent releases. New users can once again test CarPlay navigation before purchasing Maps+ or OsmAnd Pro.
Navigation now displays warnings before starting a route when required maps are missing or when private-road access needs confirmation. The update also improves map and route centering, particularly on widescreen displays.
CarPlay appearance settings no longer override the map mode selected in OsmAnd. When Day or Night mode is selected manually, the map keeps that setting when the CarPlay interface switches between light and dark modes.
You can now set a default appearance for each Track folder. New tracks added to the folder can automatically use the selected coloring, line width, direction arrows, start and finish icons, and split interval.
The settings can also be applied to all existing tracks in the folder, replacing their individual appearance options.
Smart Folders can now automatically organize tracks into groups using the new Organize by option. Instead of displaying every track in one list, you can group them by activity, creation date, location, distance, speed, altitude, elevation, or recorded sensor data.
Available organization types include:
For numerical values, you can adjust the grouping interval using Set step size. For example, tracks can be divided into distance ranges, altitude intervals, or speed groups. Empty groups are hidden automatically, and each group displays the number of included tracks.
Groups can be sorted alphabetically or, for numerical data, from highest to lowest or lowest to highest. You can also show all tracks from a group on the map or export them together.
When importing a GPX file containing multiple tracks, you can now review and select the individual tracks you want to import. Each selected track is saved separately, making it possible to manage its visibility, appearance, and other settings independently.
You can select a destination folder, import all available tracks as separate files, or use Import as one track to keep the original GPX content together.
Track waypoint lists now include a dedicated Show on map button. Tap the pin icon next to a waypoint to center the map on its location without changing the current zoom level.
Tapping the main waypoint area still opens its full context menu.
OsmAnd 5.4 also includes a range of smaller features and interface improvements:
Added a bicycle width setting. OsmAnd can now consider the width of your bicycle when calculating routes and avoid cycleways that are too narrow.
More track details in What's Here. Track information now makes it easier to distinguish between tracks on the map, including identifying the folder where a track is stored.
Added an OBD-II adapter voltage widget that displays the current voltage reported by a connected OBD-II adapter.
Added support for Roads-only maps on iOS. These smaller maps contain the road network required for navigation and address search without the complete set of regular map details.
Planned tracks now automatically receive an activity type based on the active profile or selected navigation type.
Track lists now display the track folder name on the second line, making tracks easier to identify in Search, Smart Folders, and Configure Map.
Added the Pause spoken audio option. Podcasts, audiobooks, and other spoken content can now be paused during navigation instructions instead of playing underneath them.
Improved performance when adding or managing a large number of Favorites, reducing interface freezes and delays.
Added the ability to share a route using a link making it easier to send a planned route to another user or open it on another device.
POIs containing multiple website links now display all available URLs, allowing you to choose which one to open.
Updated the Wikipedia action in the map context menu for easier access to related Wikipedia articles.
Added the ability to open matching Travel Guides directly from Search.
Added an option to hide the expand button in the Route Information widget for a cleaner navigation interface.
Increased the size of road shields in the Street Name widget, improving the readability of route numbers during navigation.
Updated turn and lane arrows to use consistent stroke thickness both on the device and in CarPlay.

Two rare events in the same month. And both of them unusual in their own way. The solar eclipse arcs up and over the North Pole, which means its path runs north-to-south rather than the typical west-to-east sweep. In Spain, the Sun will sit only a few degrees above the horizon during totality — turning the eclipse into something closer to a golden-hour phenomenon than a midday event. The lunar eclipse, meanwhile, stops just short of totality: at its peak, a narrow bright sliver of the Moon remains uncovered, leaving the rest darkened and faintly reddish.
OsmAnd Astronomy now includes (Android only, currently available in OsmAnd 5.4 beta via Google Play or as a nightly build) dedicated explorers for both events. You can move through the timeline, check visibility for any location on the planet, and see exactly how each eclipse develops — before either of them actually happens.

Open the Star Map and tap Search. Among the standard categories — Solar system, Constellations, Stars — you'll now see two new entries: Solar eclipse and Lunar eclipse. Tap Solar eclipse to open the explorer.
The screen switches to a dark view centred on the Sun, with the Moon's disc moving across it. Below, a card shows the current eclipse: its type, the percentage of the Sun obscured, the Sun's altitude at the selected location, and the exact start, maximum, and end times. A timeline slider lets you move through the event minute by minute and watch how the geometry changes.
Tap Show map to open the flat map below the card. The eclipse shadow appears as a path across the planet — a narrow band of totality with the penumbra spreading outward on both sides. Use Fit eclipse path to zoom to the full shadow on the map, or drag the map to any location to recalculate visibility for that point. The card updates instantly: move to Iceland and it shows totality, move to London and it switches to partial with a different obscuration value.
To switch between eclipses, use the arrows on either side of the eclipse title — Previous and Next — to jump to other solar eclipses and explore their paths across different parts of the world.
Tap Lunar eclipse in Search to open the second explorer. The interface works the same way — timeline, location-based card, map layer — but the event itself looks different.
Instead of a shadow crossing the planet, you're watching the Moon move through Earth's own shadow. The explorer renders both zones: the faint outer penumbra and the darker umbra at the centre. Three eclipse types are supported — penumbral, partial, and total — and the timeline marks the contact points P1 through P4, showing exactly when the Moon crosses each boundary.
What's unique here is the visibility layer. Unlike a solar eclipse, which is visible only along a narrow path, a lunar eclipse is visible from the entire night side of Earth at once. Tap Show map and the tinted region shows everywhere the Moon is above the horizon during the event — often half the planet. Drag the map or move the slider to see how that region shifts as the night progresses.
In 1504, Christopher Columbus, stranded in Jamaica and facing starvation, consulted an almanac and discovered a total lunar eclipse was coming. He used that knowledge to convince the local people that his god was angry — and when the Moon darkened on schedule, it saved his crew. He had no telescope, no app, and no map. Just a book of predictions and the right timing.
The tools look different now. Before any eclipse, open OsmAnd Astronomy, tap Solar eclipse or Lunar eclipse in Search, and check exactly what you'll see from your location. Move the map, and the card updates instantly — partial or total, obscuration percentage, Sun or Moon altitude, start and end times. Everything Columbus had to calculate by hand, resolved in a single tap.
Use the arrows on the eclipse card to move forward in time — past August, past this year, to any upcoming event. Some eclipses are total, some barely graze the penumbra, some are only visible from the middle of the Pacific. The explorer shows all of them, with the same level of detail for each. If you're planning a trip somewhere and want to know whether an eclipse lines up with your itinerary — or whether you should adjust the itinerary to line up with the eclipse — this is where you find out. Sometimes the sky makes the decision for you.
The sky has two rare events planned for August. As it turns out, so does OsmAnd.

]]>OsmAnd has discontinued "merged" maps — large country- or region-level files that were assembled from smaller regional maps. If you have one of these installed, it will no longer receive updates.
Previously, some maps were built by merging a set of smaller regional maps into one large file. For example, the full map of Austria was assembled from all of its individual regions; Bavaria (Germany) was assembled from its smaller sub-regions in the same way.
These merged maps are now discontinued. They won't be updated going forward — only the individual regional maps that made them up will continue to receive updates.
If you have a recent version of OsmAnd installed, a warning about this will appear automatically in Maps & Resources → Updates.
As OpenStreetMap data grows more detailed, map files get larger over time. Merged maps — combining dozens of regional files into one — eventually became too large to update and use efficiently, affecting app performance and routing speed.
Merging also meant duplication: users downloading a merged map and its individual regions were storing the same data twice. Discontinuing merged maps removes this overlap and keeps map updates faster and more reliable.
This wasn't a sudden decision — OsmAnd has been moving toward smaller, region-based maps for some time, and this change is part of that ongoing transition.

Going forward, updating by region means smaller downloads and keeps your maps current without needing to re-download a large file each time.

]]>Yonge Street is 56 kilometres long. The longest street in the world, according to Guinness. It starts at Lake Ontario and runs straight north through Toronto until it quietly disappears near Holland Landing. "Somewhere in the middle" turned out to be a question neither of you had actually answered. You were both on Yonge Street — technically neighbours — and had absolutely no idea how far apart you were standing.
A few taps in OsmAnd, and the guessing stopped. Distance by tap, radius circles, a straight line to your meeting point — tools that turn a vague sense of scale into something exact.

You're three kilometres into the run and there's a park ahead. Is it worth the detour, or is it further than it looks? You don't want to stop, open a route planner, and wait for a calculation. You just want a number. That's exactly what Distance by Tap is for. Enable it in Menu → Configure screen → Other → Distance by tap, and the tool is ready whenever you need it .
Tap anywhere on the map and a straight line appears from your current location to that point, with the distance shown right on the line. Tap somewhere else, and the line moves. It stays on screen as you keep going, giving you a live read on how far something is.
For measuring between any two points — say, from a subway entrance to a coffee shop — place two fingers on the map simultaneously. OsmAnd draws the line between those two points and shows the distance between them, independent of where you are.
If the label is hard to read while moving, go to Menu → Configure screen → Other → Distance by tap → Text size and switch from Normal to Large. The label becomes 1.5× bigger, with extra spacing added between the line and the text. The change applies instantly. No interruptions to the pace.
Distance by Tap answers a specific question: how far is that point? The Ruler answers a different one: what does distance actually look like on this map right now?
It sits at the bottom of the screen as a thin line segment labeled with its real-world length — 100 meters, 500 feet, whatever fits the current zoom level. No setup needed, no widget to add. It's simply there, adapting quietly as you pan and zoom. Closer in, the scale shrinks to show finer distances. Zoomed out over the whole city, it stretches to represent kilometres.
Running along an unfamiliar stretch of Yonge Street, you glance at the map and see a segment marked 200 m. The next intersection looks about two segments away — roughly 400 metres. So, to change the units between metres and feet, go to Menu → Configure profile → General settings → Units & formats → Units of length. The scale updates instantly across the whole map. It's a small thing, permanently useful.
Sometimes the question isn't how far a specific point is — it's what's actually reachable from where you're standing.
Enable the widget via Menu → Configure screen → Widgets → Choose a panel → Add widget → Radius ruler, and the map fills with concentric circles centred on your location. Each ring is labeled with its distance — 1 km, 2 km, 3 km and so on. The intervals adjust automatically as you zoom in or out.
On a long run down Yonge Street, this changes how you read the map. Instead of measuring point to point, you can see at once which parks, subway stations, or coffee shops fall within a comfortable distance — and which ones don't.
Tap the widget to cycle through three display modes — Hide, Light, and Dark — depending on what works best against the map underneath. For a wider view of the surrounding area, go to Menu → Configure screen → Other → Display position and switch your location from Center to Bottom — this shifts your position lower on the screen and expands the visible radius above you. You can also tilt the map into 3D view with a two-finger swipe up, which gives the circles depth and makes distances easier to read across the landscape.
You've agreed to meet your running partner at Jaye Robinson Park. You drop a marker on the map — a quick long-tap, then add marker and a flag appears at that point. That's your target.
Enable Arrows on the map and Direction line in Menu → Map markers → Appearance, and the map connects your current location to the marker with a straight line. As you run, the line updates continuously — the distance to the marker counts down, and the bearing shifts as your angle to the target changes. If the marker moves off screen, an arrow takes over and keeps pointing you in the right direction.
The Map markers bar widget at the top of the screen shows the distance and direction to your marker at all times — so even when you're zoomed in and the marker isn't visible, you always know how far you are and which way to go.
Today's run has a few more moving parts: starting on Yonge Street, cutting across a park, following a trail that isn't on any road map, finishing somewhere several kilometres away. For that, you need something more structured.
Open Menu → Plan a route and select the Straight line method. A dashed line connects each point you place, and as you build the route, the points list below shows the distance and azimuth for each segment. You're not following roads — you're drawing directly across the map, which makes this tool particularly useful for off-road areas or anywhere the street network doesn't match where you actually want to go.
Add points one by one using the pointer at the centre of the screen, then tap Add point. Move the map to position the next point, add it, and the segment builds. Each entry in the points list shows the cumulative distance and the bearing from the previous point — so at any stage you can see not just the total length of your path, but the exact direction of each leg.
When you're done, the route can be saved as a GPX track — a standalone file you can reopen, share, or use for navigation later. What started as a rough measurement exercise becomes a reusable track.
Running 56 kilometres of Yonge Street in one go was never the point. The point was knowing — at any moment, from any spot — exactly how far something is, what falls within reach, and where a route actually leads. Each tool in this article answers a different version of that question.

]]>A regular map won't tell you any of that. Roads, buildings, points of interest — useful on land, but the moment you're moving on water, the map needs to change completely.
This is what OsmAnd's Nautical Map View is for. Depth data, seabed information, navigation lights, buoys, fairways — the kind of detail that turns a general-purpose app into something you can actually use on the water. Whether you're planning a route along the Côte d'Azur or just trying to find a safe place to anchor for the night, it starts with a different kind of map.

Port Hercule has that quality of feeling both glamorous and impossibly tight. Yachts moored so close you could step from one deck to another, ferries cutting through the same water, tour boats circling. Once you clear the breakwater and the harbor opens up behind you, the relief is immediate. Open sea, room to breathe, and Corsica somewhere ahead on the horizon.
Before anything else, you need the Nautical Map View plugin. Open the Plugins section in the main menu, find it in the list, and enable it. Then download the nautical maps for your region. You'll find them in Maps & Resources under the Nautical maps section. With that done, open Configure map, find Map style (Map type), and switch to Nautical. Land becomes yellow, shallow water light blue, deeper water progressively darker. The coastline becomes the primary reference line, exactly as it should be when you're navigating by sea.
For open water passages, there's also the Marine style in the same menu. It adds colored sector lights around lighthouses, INT-1 light characteristics for each beacon, and a rendering closer to what you'd find on a professional electronic chart. Both styles are part of the same plugin — switching between them takes seconds depending on whether you're in a harbor or crossing open sea.
The Mediterranean between Monaco and Corsica looks uniform from the surface — deep, open water with nothing obvious to avoid. But the seabed tells a different story. Depth changes quickly near the Ligurian coast, and some areas that appear safe on a general map become more nuanced when you have actual numbers in front of you.
On the nautical map, depth appears in two ways. Depth points are individual numbers scattered across the water, each showing the shallowest measured depth at that exact location — all values in meters. Depth contours connect points of equal depth into lines, giving you a clearer picture of how the seabed rises and falls across a wider area. Together they turn a flat blue surface into something with actual shape.
You can download both separately in Maps & Resources under Nautical maps — depth points by hemisphere, depth contours by region. Once downloaded, they appear on the map automatically.
Below the water, the seabed itself also has a character. Rocky bottom, sand, gravel, silt, coral — each behaves differently for anchoring, and in shallow areas, composition matters. In Configure map, the Seabed detail option controls how much of this is shown. Simple displays the basic seamark symbols. Category adds the type of material. All shows every qualifier the data contains — texture, density, biological classification. For most passages, Simple or Category is enough. All becomes useful when you're choosing where to anchor for the night.
Open water has its own system of signs. Not road signs or street names — lights, shapes, and colors that tell you where the safe water is, where the channel runs, and what to avoid. Once you know what to look for, the map starts reading differently.
Lighthouses appear on the nautical map as distinct symbols along the coastline. Between Monaco and Corsica, Cap Corse at the northern tip of the island is one of the most prominent marks on this stretch. In Configure map, the Light detail option controls how much information is shown next to each lighthouse or beacon. Simple displays the name and basic light characteristic. Sectors adds the full arc geometry — colored wedges showing exactly which direction each light is visible from.
Buoys mark the edges of channels, isolated dangers, and safe water. Each has a shape, color, and often a light pattern, all encoded as seamark symbols on the map. The full range of buoy types is covered in the map legend, and with the Nautical or Marine style active, they appear exactly where they are in the water.
Together, lighthouses and buoys turn the open stretch toward Corsica from a blank blue space into a readable sequence of reference points — each one telling you something specific about where you are and where to go next.
Corsica is about 170 kilometers from Monaco — open Mediterranean the whole way, no channels to follow, no mapped waterways to route along. This is where the choice of navigation profile matters.
The Boat profile in OsmAnd is designed for rivers, canals, and marked fairways. For open water like this crossing, it's not the right tool — the data simply isn't there. Instead, switch to Direct-to-point routing. It navigates in a straight line toward your destination without relying on mapped waterways, which is exactly what open sea navigation requires. To enable it, activate the Boat profile in the app settings, then select Direct-to-point as the routing type.
With depth contours visible on the map, the route becomes more than just a line from A to B. You can see where the seabed rises toward the Corsican coast, where shallow areas begin near the approaches to Bastia or Calvi, and adjust your course before you're anywhere near them.
Two additional settings help here. Spot sounding distance controls how frequently depth points appear on the map — a smaller value means more numbers visible at once, useful when approaching a coast. Safety depth contour lets you set a threshold — say 5 meters — and highlights that contour line on the map so it's immediately visible against everything else. The map doesn't make decisions for you, but it gives you what you need to make them yourself.
The open sea eventually gives way to the silhouette of the Corsican coast. As you approach the island, the empty spaces on the map shift back into a detailed network of seamarks, safety contours, and harbor lights. Navigation changes from long-range planning to precision tracking, but the tools remain exactly the same.
What makes this system work is that the water is never completely empty of data. The nautical charts in OsmAnd are based on OpenSeaMap, a crowdsourced project where sailors, skippers, and developers from all over the world contribute real-time geographic information. Every beacon, depth contour, and restricted zone is part of a constantly evolving database built by the people who actually use these waters.
When you navigate with OsmAnd, you are not just using a static piece of software — you are looking at a collaborative map that turns the unpredictable surface of the water into a structured, reliable path.

]]>But on most digital maps, cities lose that depth. Buildings become flat shapes, reduced to outlines that show where something exists, but not how the city actually feels. For mappers, this is where building data starts to matter.
In OpenStreetMap, buildings can contain far more than a simple outline. Mappers can describe a building's height, the number of floors, where different sections begin, and even passages running through the structure. OsmAnd uses this data to transform flat map geometry into detailed 3D cityscapes. Buildings gain height, complex structures become distinguishable, and streets start to feel closer to the real places they represent.

Every building on an OpenStreetMap-based map starts as a polygon, a flat outline drawn around the footprint of a structure. That outline tells the map where the building is, but nothing about its shape in space.
The transformation begins with a single tag: building=*. Once a polygon carries this tag, OsmAnd knows it represents a structure and can extrude it vertically. But without height information, every building gets the same default height — a uniform cityscape that feels more like a model kit than a real place.
This is where height tags change everything. When a mapper adds height=* with a value in meters, OsmAnd uses that exact figure to determine how tall to render the building. If the height is not known precisely, building:levels=* works as a practical alternative: OsmAnd treats each level as approximately 3 meters, so a five-story building tagged building:levels=5 renders at around 15 meters. For buildings that don't start at ground level, min_height=* defines where the walls begin, useful for elevated sections, overhangs, or structures built above a passageway.
The result is immediate. Buildings stop being identical flat shapes and start reflecting what actually exists: a two-floor residential house next to a nine-floor apartment block, a low market hall beside a tall church tower. The map begins to carry real spatial information.
For Rome specifically, this matters a great deal. The city mixes centuries of architecture at wildly different scales. A single block might contain a Renaissance palazzo, a medieval tower remnant, and a modern addition — all at different heights, all worth mapping accurately.
Not every building is a simple box. A cathedral might have a nave, a transept, and a tower, each rising to a different height. The Pantheon in Rome combines a cylindrical rotunda with a colonnaded porch, two distinct volumes at different heights within a single structure. A shopping arcade might combine a low glass atrium with a taller surrounding structure. In OpenStreetMap, these buildings can be mapped using building:part=*, which allows a single structure to be broken into sections, each with its own height and shape.
When a building is split into parts, OsmAnd renders each section independently. A part tagged with height=15 sits lower than a neighboring part tagged with height=40, and the result on the map reflects the actual silhouette of the building rather than a single averaged block. For complex structures, this is the difference between a recognizable landmark and a generic shape.
To group parts into a coherent whole, mappers use a type=building relation. The relation connects the outer outline of the building with its individual parts, giving OsmAnd the context it needs to render them together correctly. Without this relation, parts and outlines can conflict, producing rendering errors or overlapping geometry.
Archways, vaulted passages, and covered walkways that cut through a structure are a common feature of older European cities. On a flat map, a road that disappears beneath a building and reappears on the other side simply looks broken.
The tag tunnel=building_passage solves this. Applied to the way passing through a building, it tells OsmAnd that the road or pedestrian path runs beneath the structure rather than being blocked by it. The result is a visible opening in the 3D building model, a gap in the wall through which the street continues.
For mappers, the building outline and the road through it are mapped as separate elements. The way carries tunnel=building_passage, the building polygon sits above it, and when both are correctly tagged, the opening is rendered automatically.
To enable 3D buildings, go to Menu → Configure map → Topography → 3D buildings. Once the option is on, tilt the map by placing two fingers on the screen and swiping up. Buildings appear only at higher zoom levels, where individual structures are distinguishable, and fade in and out smoothly as you zoom or pan.
One detail worth knowing: if a POI or a navigation point falls inside a building, OsmAnd highlights the corresponding structure automatically. This is particularly useful in dense urban areas where a single address can be hard to locate visually. Instead of scanning the block, you see exactly which building you need.
Several settings control how 3D buildings look and perform on the map. Color lets you choose between the default map style or a custom color set separately for day and night mode (custom color is a paid feature). Visibility controls the opacity of buildings using a slider from 10% to 100%, with 50% set by default. Lower values keep roads and labels readable beneath the structures, higher values make buildings more visually dominant.
Both settings open a separate preview screen where you can see the changes on a live map before applying them. If you want to return to the original values, a Reset to default option is available in the app bar.
For performance, two additional options are available. Level of detail switches between Low and High geometry complexity. High detail also enables the fade animation when buildings appear and disappear. View distance controls how far from the camera buildings are rendered, either Near or Far. Using both High and Far improves visual quality but may affect performance and battery usage.

]]>This is where OsmAnd Astronomy changes the experience. Instead of guessing, you can explore the sky the same way you explore a map — step by step, with clear orientation, useful context, and the ability to plan what to look for next.
Start by opening the Star map in OsmAnd (Astronomy is available as a paid plugin in OsmAnd for Android and is currently not supported on iOS). The screen switches from the Earth map to the sky, showing stars, constellations, planets, and the paths of the Sun and Moon for your current location. The view is aligned with the compass, so you can drag the sky to explore it or enable compass mode and move your phone to follow your direction.
At the bottom of the screen, you can change the time to see how the sky looks later in the night or return to the present moment. If there are too many stars, adjust the magnitude filter to focus on the brightest ones.
To simplify the view further, open Configure view. Here you can choose what to display — for example, keep Solar system and Constellations visible while hiding Stars or Deep sky objects. You can also switch between 2D and 3D views or turn on the red filter to preserve your night vision while observing.
At this point, the sky stops feeling random. You are no longer just looking at it — you are navigating it.
Once you understand where you are looking, the next step is deciding what to look for. Tap Search on the Star map. Instead of scanning the entire sky, you get a structured list of celestial objects — planets, stars, constellations, and more.
At the top, the Watch now section highlights objects that are visible at your current location and time. It works as a simple guide, showing what is already above the horizon or will be visible tonight. Select any object from the list, and the map centers on it. From there, you can see where it is in the sky and start observing without guessing.
Pick any point in the sky that catches your eye and tap it. The map highlights it, and a panel opens with everything you need to know. Instead of a nameless light, you now see a clear label — a star, a planet, or part of a constellation — along with a few key details. How bright it is, where it sits in the sky, and when it rises or sets. Enough to understand what you are looking at without digging into complex data.
Around the object, a subtle hour ring shows how it moves across the sky throughout the day. It adds a sense of motion, turning a static point into something you can follow.
From here, you can keep it simple or go further — center the object, save it, or use Direction to help you find it in the sky. So, what felt like a random point a moment ago now becomes something you can recognise, track, and return to.
Some moments are easier to remember under an open sky. In a place like the Namib Desert, where the horizon is wide and the night is clear, timing matters just as much as location. Not every object is visible all night. Some rise later, others stay low near the horizon, and a few reach their best position only for a short time. Instead of waiting and hoping, you can check this in advance.
Open the Visibility tab for any object. The graph shows how it moves across the sky over the course of a day, including when it rises, reaches its highest point, and sets. The higher it is above the horizon, the easier it is to see.
If you are planning ahead, switch to the Schedule tab. It shows how visibility changes over the next days, so you can choose the right evening without guessing. With this, the sky becomes part of the plan. You are not just stepping outside and looking up — you know when to be there.
Switch to camera mode and lift your phone toward the sky. You see the real sky on your screen with a transparent overlay aligned to your position and direction.
Move your phone slowly across the horizon. As objects enter your field of view, they are highlighted, making them easier to recognise. You are no longer matching shapes or guessing positions — the sky and the map align directly in front of you.
If something feels too faint or difficult to spot, this is where it becomes clearer. Adjust your position slightly, and the object appears exactly where it should be. Tap any highlighted object to see its details.
As you continue exploring, you may notice that sometimes there is simply too much to see. In dense star fields, it helps to narrow things down. Use filters in Search to focus only on what matters right now. You can show only objects visible tonight, sort them by brightness, or limit the list to those visible to the naked eye. This turns a long list into a small set of clear options.
If you want to go further, open Catalogs to explore entire groups of objects — from well-known stars to deep sky objects. It is a different way of navigating the sky, more structured and less dependent on chance.
And all of this works even without a connection. The Astronomy plugin uses offline catalogs, so whether you are in the city or far out in the desert, the sky remains fully accessible.

]]>We're excited to announce the release of OsmAnd Web 1.03. This update introduces Garmin Connect integration for automatic activity sync, a redesigned navigation interface, improved management of personal data with Smart Folders and pinned Favorites, and enhanced track customization with adjustable color and width. It also improves POI information with opening hours displayed directly in the context menu, along with multiple usability improvements and bug fixes across the web map.

You can now connect your Garmin Connect account in the Web Planner and automatically sync your activities with OsmAnd.
Once connected, activities are imported as tracks and stored in a dedicated Garmin Connect folder in the Tracks section. New activities are added automatically after they are recorded in your Garmin account. Imported activities are converted into tracks, and their types are preserved when possible. You can also sync recent activity history during the initial connection.

Smart Folders are now supported in the web version, allowing you to view and manage track collections created on mobile devices. Smart Folders are synced via OsmAnd Cloud when Settings synchronization is enabled.
On the web, Smart Folders are displayed in the track list with a distinct star icon for easy identification. The folder content depends on its configuration on the device, and only supported parameters are applied when displaying tracks.
Several improvements were introduced to make working with tracks easier and more flexible.
Redesigned track panel and context menu with a new top action bar, quick access controls, and tab-based navigation between Overview, Track, and Points.
A new export option allows downloading GPX tracks in a simplified format. This helps reduce file size and improves compatibility when sharing tracks with other applications or services.
Public transport stops can now be displayed directly on the map. Stop markers indicate locations where public transport routes operate. Selecting a stop opens a context panel with key information and quick actions.
The Routes section lists all routes serving the selected stop, including the transport type and route number. Selecting a route opens a detailed view showing the full sequence of stops, with the currently selected stop highlighted on the map.
The POI context menu has been enhanced to display more useful information about locations directly on the map.
Opening hours are now shown directly in the POI context menu when this information is available. The menu also indicates whether a place is currently open or closed.
Photos from Wikimedia sources now display additional information in the POI photo gallery. When opening a photo, users can view details such as the date, author, license information, and a description of the image.
Favorite folders can now be pinned so that frequently used folders appear at the top of the list for quicker access. Pinned folders are displayed in a separate section above the rest of the Favorites.
The Favorites and waypoint editing workflow has been redesigned with a new unified Edit panel. Favorites and track waypoints can now be edited more conveniently, including name, address, description, folder, icon, color, and shape settings.
The updated interface also adds improved appearance preview both in the editor and on the map, categorized icon selection, custom color palettes, dedicated description editing, and easier folder management with support for creating new folders directly from the editor.
When an object on the map (such as a POI, favorite, or navigation point) is selected, it is now highlighted with a distinct pin marker. Only one object can be selected at a time, and the map scrolls to it only if it is not currently visible on screen.

You can now easily access your Garmin activities within OsmAnd to use them for navigation, analysis, or sharing. This update makes it simpler to keep all your outdoor adventures in one place and seamlessy integrate your Garmin data with OsmAnd’s mapping tools.
First, you need to sign in to OsmAnd web using an active OsmAnd Pro subscription. Then you will need to connect your Garmin Connect™ account with OsmAnd Web. Once connected, OsmAnd will automatically sync your activities from Garmin Connect™ and create a new folder called "Garmin Connect" in the Tracks section. All your synced activities will be stored in this folder, allowing you to easily access and manage them.
To connect your Garmin Connect™ account with OsmAnd Web, follow these steps:
Go to OsmAnd Web Map > OsmAnd Account > Connected Apps and click on the "Connect" button.
You will be redirected to the Garmin Connect™ login page. Enter your Garmin Connect™ credentials and authorize OsmAnd to access your Garmin Connect™ account. Here you can choose sharing of Historical data (see details below). Click to "Save" button for continuation.
Historic data: You can sync activities from the past 30 days by enabling this option on the Garmin Connect™ authorization page. Please note that activities older than 30 days cannot be imported automatically.
After successful authorization, you will see the Garmin Connect™ menu in your OsmAnd Web account with two section - "My data" and "Settings".
"My data" section contains "Synced activities" folder with all synced activities from Garmin Connect™, button "Last synced" activity, and Button "View on Garmin Connect™" that will redirect to your Garmin Connect™ account.
In "Settings" section you can choose type of activities to sync and the disconnecting button.
All new activities from Garmin Connect™ will be automatically synced with OsmAnd Web and added to the "Garmin Connect" folder. If you don't see your new activities in OsmAnd Web, please check that you have new activities available on your Garmin Connect™ account.
You can view, analyze, and manage your activities directly within OsmAnd Web. This integration allows you to have all your outdoor adventures in one place, making it easier to track your progress and share your experiences with friends.
The "Garmin Connect" tracks folder will be synced with OsmAnd mobile app, so you can also access your Garmin activities on the go. This means that you can view your Garmin activities on your mobile device and use them for navigation, analysis, or sharing with friends while you're out exploring.
Here you can choose which types of activities to sync with OsmAnd Web. Go to "Settings" > "Activities to sync" and select the activity types you want to sync.
After selecting the activity types, OsmAnd Web will automatically sync only those activities from your Garmin Connect™ account that match the selected types. This allows you to customize your syncing preferences and ensure that only relevant activities are imported into OsmAnd Web.
For disconnecting your Garmin Connect™ account from OsmAnd Web, go to "Settings" > "Disconnect" and click on the "Disconnect" button. This will revoke the access of OsmAnd Web to your Garmin Connect™ account and stop any further syncing of activities.
Your tracks from Garmin Connect™ will remain in the "Garmin Connect" folder in the Tracks section of your OsmAnd Web account, but no new activities will be synced until you reconnect your Garmin Connect™ account.

Map buttons can now be fully customized. You can control the visibility and adjust the appearance of both default and custom (Quick Action) buttons.
You can now resize the My Location position icon independently from the app’s text size. Separate size settings are available for Resting and Navigation modes, allowing better visibility while driving. The icon size can be adjusted from 50% to 300%, with 100% set as default.
The Trip Recording plugin has been expanded with smarter widgets that provide deeper insights into your activity, especially for cycling and hiking in hilly terrain.
Many Trip Recording widgets now support Multiple Display Modes. This allows you to toggle a single widget to show metrics for your overall trip or specifically for your Last Uphill or Last Downhill section. You can switch modes by tapping the widget or via the widget settings.
The Max Speed widget displays your peak speed. In its new modes, you can see exactly how fast you went during your most recent descent or climb, helping you analyze performance on specific segments of your track.
The Average Slope widget provides real-time data on the steepness of your current or last completed section. It’s an essential tool for gauging the difficulty of a climb or the intensity of a descent.
The Moving Time widget now tracks your active duration with higher granularity. By switching modes, you can see exactly how much time you spent on your last uphill grind versus your last downhill cruise.
Added option to copy waypoints between different Favorites folders or create new ones.
You can now quickly share a link to any Point of Interest (POI) or custom map location. When you select an object on the map, the Share action generates a universal osmand.net URL.
This link can be opened by other OsmAnd users to find the exact location on their devices, or viewed in a web browser.
New quick actions make it easier to control weather layers directly from the map. Show/Hide – Weather layers works as a master toggle for all active weather layers. When turned off, it hides all currently enabled weather layers. When turned on again, it restores exactly the same set of layers that were active before. Show/Hide – Wind animation allows you to quickly enable or disable the wind animation layer independently.

This update focuses on the stability of the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) link between your iOS device and the adapter. The connection is now more resilient to interruptions, ensuring a steady flow of data—such as engine RPM, speed, and fuel consumption—directly into your OsmAnd widgets and GPX logs.
The Popular Places layer has been significantly updated to provide more control over how you discover points of interest. This feature helps you find the most notable locations in an area, now with improved data source management and visual previews.

You can now choose between Online and Offline sources for Popular Places.
To make the map more interactive, you can now enable image previews. When this option is toggled on, small thumbnails from Wikipedia appear directly on the map for top-rated locations. The Updates tab now detects unsupported and overlapping region maps. If a map has been deprecated and replaced by smaller regional maps, it appears under a new Unsupported maps section. You can review the list, remove outdated maps individually or use Delete all to clean them up at once (with confirmation). Large overlapping region maps are hidden to prevent duplication and confusion, helping keep your map data organized and up to date.

Astronomy plugin displays an interactive star sky overlay with stars, constellations, the Sun, the Moon, and planets. It helps you identify celestial objects above your current location, preview their paths for a selected date and time, and plan stargazing sessions using built-in time controls and viewing options:

The plugin includes a dedicated Search tool specifically for celestial objects. You can browse through categories like the Solar System, Constellations, Stars, and Deep Sky objects. The "Watch now" section highlights objects currently visible from your location, while advanced filters allow you to sort by magnitude (brightness) or upcoming rise/set times.
To help you orient your observations, you can enable an Earth Map view directly beneath the Star map. This feature allows you to relate celestial positions to your real-world geographic surroundings. Additionally, the AR Star Finding (Camera mode) uses your device's sensors to overlay the astronomical data onto your live camera feed, making it easy to find exact stars and planets in the real sky.
The Map screen layout setting allows you to control how widget panels are arranged on the map screen. It helps prevent widgets and buttons from overlapping and improves screen space usage, especially when switching between portrait and landscape orientations.

Once you enable Separate layouts, you unlock the ability to choose how the top and bottom widget panels interact with the rest of the interface: Wide or Compact.

3D Buildings feature displays buildings as volumetric 3D models instead of flat shapes.

As part of our ongoing 3D map improvements, you can now highlight specific buildings on the map. When the 3D buildings option is enabled, selecting a POI will automatically highlight the corresponding building polygon, making it easier to identify your target in dense urban environments.
Globe View allows you to display the map as a spherical Earth instead of a flat projection. This mode changes the geometry of the map surface and adapts map interaction to spherical navigation.

Some Trip Recording widgets support multiple display modes. They let you switch between overall trip values and metrics for the most recent uphill or downhill section of the currently recorded trip. See the list of available modes here.

We've introduced a powerful new palette editor that gives you full control over how data is visualized on your map. Whether you are analyzing a GPX track or viewing terrain relief, you can now customize the color transitions to suit your needs.
The editor now supports two distinct ways to transition between colors:
0–15 km/h to Yellow and 15.1–30 km/h to Red. This mode eliminates the gradient, making it easier to identify specific data ranges at a glance.Tracks Context menu → Appearance → Colour → + or All colors
Tracks colored by Speed, Altitude, or Slope now support Editor Colour Palettes. You can create Relative palettes (auto-scaled to your specific track data) or Fixed value palettes (based on absolute numbers), define custom color steps, and even set a unique color for missing data points.

This same editor has been integrated into terrain coloring options. You can now create your own custom color schemes for Altitude and Slope layers, allowing for a more personalized and readable terrain relief.
Cycling profiles now support a bicycle width parameter. The router takes this value into account to help avoid narrow cycle paths that may not be suitable for wider bicycles.
Auto-organize tracks by year, length, activity & more:
Managing large collections of recordings is now much simpler with our new "Smart Folder" system. Organize your tracks dynamically by year, activity, or distance to keep your history clean and accessible.
The new grouping mechanism allows you to create dynamic groups with any granularity you want. For example, you can group your entire library by Year, then sub-group by Activity type, and finally by Distance (e.g., 0-10km, 10-50km) or Duration. These folders provide helpful summaries, including total distance, duration, and average speed for each specific filtered group.
Enhanced Search Result Details: Navigating search results for common locations is now more intuitive. By displaying the city and street name directly in the results list, you can instantly distinguish between identical POI names without needing to open each one individually.
Improved Track Waypoint Navigation: We’ve refined how you interact with waypoints within a track. You can now tap through the waypoint list to center the map on each point sequentially. Crucially, the list remains open during this process, allowing for a much faster and more seamless route-review experience.
New POI Share Links: Sharing specific locations has been upgraded to support a new link format (aligned with our Web version). This ensures that when you share a POI, the recipient sees the exact same point and context across different platforms and devices.
Expanded Activity Profile Icons: To better support diverse outdoor activities, we are expanding our library of profile icons. Dedicated new icons for running, sailing, skateboarding, and etc are being added to make switching between your favorite activities more visually intuitive.
Multi-Selection for Favorites: Managing "My Places" is now more efficient with the addition of multi-selection support for Favorites. Just like with tracks, you can now select multiple saved points at once to move them to a different folder, share them, or delete them in bulk.
Refining Plugin Organization: We are restructuring how custom plugins are presented to help users distinguish between core built-in and custom plugins. This reorganization makes the app's extensive functionality more discoverable and less overwhelming for new users.
GPX Start/Finish Icon Optimization: To improve performance and prevent app freezes, we’ve updated how Start/Finish icons are handled for complex tracks. These icons are now disabled by default for tracks with more than 10 points and are force-disabled for very heavy tracks (over 100 points) to ensure a smooth map-viewing experience.
ODB-II Adapter Voltage Widget: For users with OBD2 integration, we've added a new dedicated widget to monitor "Adapter Voltage." This allows you to keep an eye on your vehicle's electrical health directly from the main navigation screen.
OBD-II Vehicle Metrics in Track Graphs: Vehicle data recorded via OBD-II can now be analyzed directly on the Analyze on map graph for tracks. This allows you to visualize parameters such as engine speed, temperature, fuel metrics, and more alongside standard track data.

To explore that, we collected feedback across five language groups: English, German, French, Italian, and Spanish.
The results gave us a clear picture. Users value OsmAnd for its depth, flexibility, and offline capabilities — especially in situations where reliability and preparation matter. At the same time, the survey highlighted areas where the app still creates friction, particularly around usability, search, and routing confidence.
This post shares some of the main themes that appeared across all five surveys.
We received responses from users across five language groups:

In total, that gave us 2,488 responses.
Most respondents were already experienced OsmAnd users. In every language group, the majority had used the app for more than a year. This means the feedback mainly came from people who know the product well and use it regularly in real situations.
Across all languages, several themes appeared again and again.

This confirms something important: for many people, OsmAnd is not just a general-purpose map app. It is a tool for prepared travel, outdoor activities, and offline navigation.
That was especially visible in the strongest use cases by language:

Many users clearly trust OsmAnd in situations where mainstream navigation apps may not be enough — for example during hiking trips, travel abroad, off-road navigation, or route planning far from a stable connection.
This is one of OsmAnd’s strongest product and brand advantages.
The feedback was positive overall, but one message came through very clearly:
Users value OsmAnd’s power, but many find it too complex.
This theme appeared in all five surveys.
The most common issues mentioned were:
In other words, the main challenge is not simply a lack of features.
The challenge is that the value of those features is not always easy to access.
For many users, OsmAnd feels extremely capable — but sometimes harder to learn or use than it should be.
One of the most encouraging findings is that overall loyalty remains strong.
Across all language groups, recommendation scores were high. Users clearly believe in the product. But that does not mean there is no risk.
Many respondents said they had at least occasionally considered using another app because of issues such as complexity, search friction, or routing behavior.
That creates an important tension:
This suggests that OsmAnd’s biggest opportunity is not only to add more capabilities, but to make the existing capabilities easier to use with confidence.
Many respondents also mentioned using other navigation apps in parallel with OsmAnd. This is not surprising — most people have multiple apps for different purposes.
The reasons were fairly consistent:

This comparison is useful because it shows that OsmAnd is not mainly competing on “how many features it has.” In many cases, it is competing on clarity, convenience, trust, and speed of everyday use.
Although the overall themes were similar, each language group had its own profile.
German-speaking respondents showed the strongest concentration around hiking, walking, cycling, and offline travel. This looks like a highly outdoor-oriented group with regular use patterns and strong engagement.
English-language responses were the broadest in profile. They combined offline travel, walking, hiking, route planning, and rural navigation, showing a wide mix of travel, outdoor, and practical navigation use cases.
French-speaking respondents stood out as strong offline and travel-oriented users, with high mentions of route planning, GPX recording, and hiking. This group reflects a power-user profile that values preparation and track-based workflows.
Italian-speaking users showed a distinctive mix of hiking, GPX use, route planning, and motorcycling. Compared with some other groups, motorcycling was especially visible here.
Spanish-speaking respondents stood out most clearly for route planning, remote-area navigation, motorcycling, and daily car use. This group appears more road-navigation-oriented than the German or French groups, while still valuing offline and advanced use.
Despite these differences, the common patterns are more important than the differences.

This consistency across languages is one of the strongest findings in the entire survey.
The survey confirms that OsmAnd already has a clear identity.
Users do not mainly come to OsmAnd because it is the simplest navigation app. They come because it offers something deeper:

At the same time, the survey also shows a clear direction for improvement. Users do not want OsmAnd to become generic or stripped down. They want it to remain powerful — but to feel clearer, easier, and more trustworthy in everyday use.
That is an important distinction.
The goal is not to reduce what makes OsmAnd special.
The goal is to make that value easier to reach.

February is a great time to explore Patagonia — it’s summer in the Southern Hemisphere, with long daylight hours and easier access to remote areas. A quick online search for “Patagonia must-sees” almost always brings up one name: Los Glaciares National Park in Argentina — a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1981.
So why not make it the starting point of our journey?
Open OsmAnd Web and tap the Search icon on the map. You can search not only by place name, but also by exact coordinates — a handy option when you know the location but not the name. For this example, enter the coordinates -50.000000, -73.000000. The map instantly centers on this point and places a pin in the heart of Patagonia, near Lago Argentino and the glaciers that give the park its name.
Selecting the location opens the context panel, where you can review the position, copy the coordinates, and use quick actions to keep planning.
With the map centered on the Los Glaciares area, tap Explore. OsmAnd instantly highlights interesting places around you, turning the surrounding landscape into a collection of discoverable spots — viewpoints, lakes, glaciers, mountain ranges, and protected areas.
Each place comes with useful information: a name, category, short description, and often photos. To narrow things down, you can use filters to show only what matters to you — for example, Nature & Outdoors. This makes it easy to move from a broad view of the region to a focused list of places worth adding to your journey. By the way, if you prefer exploring on the go, OsmAnd also offers a similar Explore feature in the mobile app (Android only) — see the step-by-step guide here.
Among the many results, one destination stands out almost immediately: Torres del Paine National Park — this time across the border, in Chile. It’s one of Patagonia’s most iconic national parks, and a natural next step for our route.
Selecting Torres del Paine opens the POI context menu, where you can save the park to your Favorites, share a direct link to it, or jump straight into route planning and navigation.
Choose Navigation, and the selected park becomes your destination point. For the starting point, set Los Glaciares National Park. If you want to shape the journey more precisely, you can add intermediate points along the way — useful when you want the route to pass through specific locations, border crossings, or scenic stops.
Next, select the routing profile that fits your plans. OsmAnd recalculates the route instantly, drawing a clear path between these two landmark destinations and showing distance, estimated travel time, and elevation profile.
What once would have required multiple maps and guesswork now becomes a clear, flexible plan — ready to adapt as your adventure unfolds.
Patagonia isn’t just about long roads and mountain passes. In Chilean Patagonia, travel often includes water as well — fjords, channels, and scenic ferry routes that cut through dramatic landscapes. One of the most famous examples is the Navimag ferry, which connects Puerto Montt and Puerto Natales, offering a multi-day journey through Chile’s southern fjords.
When a journey includes different types of terrain and transport, planning everything as a single route can be a challenge. This is where OsmAnd Web Plan Route really shines. In the route planner, you can build one continuous track and change the routing profile for individual segments. Drive between towns, switch to a boat profile for ferry crossings, then return to a pedestrian or driving profile for the next part of the journey — all within the same route.
Using the Change profile option, you decide whether a new profile applies only to the next segments or recalculates the entire route. This makes it easy to adapt your plan as the landscape changes, without starting over.

Whether you’re on a short local ride or a cross-country expedition, your settings will be ready the moment you switch profiles.
Maine boasts nearly 11,000 miles of groomed snowmobile trails, including the famous Interconnected Trail System (ITS) covering hubs like The County, Eustis, Jackman, and Rangeley.
To explore these, simply switch to the Snowmobile map style in OsmAnd (Menu → Configure map → Map style → Snowmobile), download the US map region for offline use, and tap any trail for guidance.

OsmAnd now supports customizable buttons for external controllers. You can assign any Quick Action to a keyboard button, allowing for a more personalized navigation experience:
Menu → Settings → Choose Profile → General settings → External input devices → Device → Add
All widgets now feature text outlines, enhancing visibility against various map backgrounds.
You can now resize the text in the Distance by tap tool. Two variants are available: Normal and Large, making it easier to read distances on the map.
A new precision grid has been added to help you align your map buttons more accurately.
The temperature units selection has been moved to General Settings for easier access:
Menu → Settings (Select Profile) → General Settings → Units & formats → Temperature (Device settings, Celsius or Fahrenheit)
Users can now set altitude units (meters or feet) separately from distance units in the settings:

"Marine" is a new nautical map style designed for maritime navigation. This style displays light characteristics, sectorial lights, and other maritime features. The Map Configure menu after enabling "Marine" style has additional options for customization in the "Other map attributes" section.
Now, you can add special truck metrics for Truck profile directly from the profile settings:
Menu → Settings (Track profile)→ Navigation Settings → Vehicle parameters: Max axle load, Max weight at full load
