Episode 192 - Taneea and Dawson Hull

Taneea Hull began her musical career in Sioux Falls, SD, when she picked up the clarinet in her fifth grade band and studied with Chris Hill, the principal clarinetist of the South Dakota Symphony. Today, she is an active performer and teacher in the Memphis, TN area. She earned a Bachelor's Degree in Clarinet Performance from the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, MD where she studied with Steven Barta.

Taneea is principal clarinetist with the Jackson Symphony in TN and performs with other orchestras such as the South Dakota Symphony, the Memphis Symphony, the Memphis Repertory Orchestra, and the Alabama Symphony. She has been a concerto soloist with the Germantown Symphony, the Ocmulgee Symphony, and the Sioux Falls Municipal Band, and was a guest artist with her husband, performing Rhapsody in Blue and playing principal clarinet with the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra.

Dawson Hull is a pianist, composer, and conductor living in Memphis, TN. A graduate from the University of Memphis, Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore and Samford University in Birmingham, AL, Dawson has appeared as a featured soloist with numerous symphony orchestras. His compositions and arrangements have been performed across the nation. Dawson is the Pastor of Instrumental Worship Arts at Germantown Baptist Church where he leads the Conservatory of Music, orchestra, jazz band, and student choir. Dawson and his wife, Taneea, who is a clarinetist, have three children.

Dawson and I met in the cafeteria of the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, MD in 2007. We connected immediately over our shared faith and began dating and playing music together within a few months. But believe it or not, our music wasn't always so harmonious! Dawson was really good at musical details and digging deep into the emotion and meaning of the music. I was really good at rhythm and technical accuracy. We clashed a bit with our critique of each other's weak areas and some rehearsals were….interesting.

But over the past 13 years of composing and performing, we have helped each other immensely to grow in our musicianship, especially in the areas that were lacking at first. God has woven our music together just as he has woven us together in marriage and we love sharing our music with all those around us!

We have been dreaming about making an album together ever since Dawson wrote the first thing for us to play - an arrangement of Be Thou My Vision. We were newly married and serving at a church that allowed us to share our music in creative ways. Dawson wrote a few more pieces for us to play there, and then sporadically added to the collection over the next few years.

We had ideas for an album and wanted to start working on it but between not having quite enough music and the overwhelming process of learning how to go about making an album, our dream stalled for several years. Then, while being stuck at home in 2020, Dawson turned out about five more arrangements and we suddenly had just the right amount for an album, and enough musical success as a performing duo that we decided it was time to go for it!

God weaved the pieces of the puzzle together expertly, confirming that this project was a special assignment from Him. He brought people into our lives to be involved in the production process that have encouraged and allowed us to remain committed to our purpose of serving Him and bringing Him glory through our music.

It's hard to believe our dream album is finally done and ready to be shared!

Winner of Debut Atlantic Tour, Prairie Debut Tour, British Columbia Touring, Allied Concerts Tour (USA, 2016), the Royal Conservatory Concerto Competition and the Presser Music Award. Mr. Wolak performed with the renowned Quartetto Gelato.

He continues to expand the clarinet repertoire by commissioning new pieces. Regularly appears in recitals as chamber musician and as soloist with American and European orchestras. A "Fryderyk" nominee, Poland's highest recording award, he is a regular fixture on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Classical 96.3 FM, Public Radio International, and in the US, National Public Radio.

As a soloist/clarinet clinician, he has toured and taught master classes in Europe, Asia and both Americas.

Since August 2015 he is actively involved in research on the role of oral articulators in clarinet playing at Speech-Language Pathology Department at University of Toronto. Results of the preliminary studies are to be presented in the upcoming months.

Dr. Wolak is a regularly published author of articles on clarinet-related issues in Your Muse, the largest music magazine in Poland, in which he is an editor and contributor of a section called "Clarinetist's Vademecum".

He is the founder of Music Mind Inc., an initiative that creates music education programs for schools and communities.

Jon Manasse's solo appearances include New York City performances at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts' Avery Fisher Hall and Alice Tully Hall, Hunter College's Sylvia & Danny Kaye Playhouse, Columbia University, Rockefeller University and The Town Hall, fourteen tours of Japan and Southeast Asia – all with the New York Symphonic Ensemble, debuts in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, and Osaka and concerto performances with Gerard Schwarz and the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra, both at Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall and at the prestigious Tokyu Bunkamura Festival in Tokyo.

Jon Manasse is a graduate of The Juilliard School, where he studied with David Weber. Mr. Manasse was a top prize winner in the Thirty-Sixth International Competition for Clarinet in Munich and the youngest winner of the International Clarinet Society Competition. His ninth album, it is a collection of works inspired by poetry as interactions between sound and verse weave together melancholy, effervescence, and at times, anxiety sparked by chaos. Creating a collective musical voice that is direct, honest, and unique, composer, saxophonist, and clarinetist Aaron Irwin is joined by Mike Baggetta (guitar), and Jeff Hirshfield (drums). Irwin's longstanding interest in reading and understanding poetry was given room to breathe during the pandemic. He credits his teachers and classmates (Brooklyn Poets, Gotham Writers) with providing a much-needed outlet.

Stanley Drucker on the "Heritage Collection"

In this episode of the Clarineat Podcast I'm joined by the legendary Stanley Drucker, who is of course the former principal clarinetist of The New York Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he held for over 60 years.

During his time with the orchestra, Stanley also maintained a busy schedule as a chamber musician and recitalist. He could, of course, be found performing at illustrious venues like Carnegie Hall, but you might be surprised to learn that he also performed quite often at venues such as churches and school auditoriums, places, of course, where you might not expect to find one of the world's greatest musicians.

Today, our conversation focuses on this element of Stanley's work, and most notably the release of an exciting new set of CDs called the "Heritage Collection." This collection features live recordings at many different venues recorded over a 30 year span from the early 1970s to mid 2000s. Stanley is joined in performance on this set by world class chamber ensembles such as the Juilliard String Quartet and, of course, his wonderful wife Naomi Drucker who is an accomplished clarinetist in her own right. I'm thrilled to say that Naomi also joins me in conversation for part of today's interview.

Phil Lambert was born in Christchurch, New Zealand. After completing his Music Degree, Phil relocated to Melbourne, Australia where he continued his musical career as a composer, teacher and performer and established his own company Cloudbreak Music®. He has also built a successful private woodwind teaching business and created the internationally recognised product Classical Fingers®. As a music educator, Phil has been teaching Clarinet, Saxophone and Flute for 18 years and now teaches privately from his studio in Kensington, Melbourne. From 1992-2012 he was a founding member of the Bang on a Can All-stars, finishing his tenure with the group with an appearance on an episode of PBS' Arthur. His compositions have been commissioned and performed by Kronos Quartet, Wu Man, the American Composers Orchestra, Steven Schick, So Percussion, and the Boston Modern Orchestra Project. He has collaborated with – among others - Brian Eno, Paul Simon, Ornette Coleman, Thurston Moore, Meredith Monk, Bryce Dessner, Philip Glass, Terry Riley, Louis Andriessen, Shara Worden, Cecil Taylor, Henry Threadgill, Matthew Shipp, and Ethel. His most recent project is the hour-long In My Mind & In My Car (w/Christine Southworth), for bass clarinet, electronics and video, His recording of Don Byron's Clarinet Concerto, which he commissioned, was named one of Downbeat Magazine's 2015 Albums of the Year. At MIT he is head of Music & Theater Arts and director of the Center for Art, Science & Technology.
