• Waves into Patterns by Dmitry Paranyushkin

•  Flying Without Means by Anton Kats

Both presentations will feature physical practice sessions that will invite the participants to explore the concepts from the book through the body.

The presentation will start at 19.30 at Galerie Molitor in Berlin. The event begins at 19.30. Each presentation is about 20 minutes long. The address is Kurfürstenstrasse 143, 10785, Berlin (the entrance is from Frobenstrasse).

The event is organized by the wonderful Hopscotch Reading Room bookstore in Berlin (which is just a few minutes away from the gallery), so you can also use it as an opportunity to explore their amazing selection of books.

Waves Into Patterns

In this new book, I talk about different types of change, ecological dynamics, and variability. During the presentation, I will discuss some ideas from the book and invite you for a short physical practice session where we will explore the concepts from this book using the body, breathing, and movement.

This work continues my research in the EightOS practice, so it can be considered a further development of the concepts we’ve explored during our interactive sessions. This time, however, we adopt the perspectives of dynamical systems theory and ecology, exploring how notions such as adaptability, resilience, fractal reconfiguration, and disruption can be applied in other contexts: from social interactions and music to breathing and movement.

Flying Without Means

Anton Kats will present his new book Flying Without Means, also published by Circadian, where he demonstrates how 100 burpees a day can become a regular meditation practice for self-exploration and transcendence.

In the age of AI, text can behave like a musical instrument or a program: a system that unfolds new ideas, styles, and even ethical questions as it’s played.

Reading becomes conversational and non-linear. More and more people consume information in fragments, jumping from one part to another, weaving multiple narratives into unique textures that make sense for them. They might not read the whole book but instead ask ChatGPT to provide its essence. They might be interested not in content but in the style. They might not look for a summary but the parts that are missing.

Let us set aside the criticisms regarding short attention spans and the impact of AI on our reading habits. While this observation may be accurate, it also reflects a shift that has already occurred in the past. Every new technology changes our habits, and somehow we find a way to evolve with it. What is the transformation that’s happening now?

Writing and reading are evolving into generative and procedural practices. A single text is a multidimensional system of vectors where certain concepts and topics are aligned in a certain way. When it is unfolded, these relationships come into play, and probabilistic engines deliver their version of reality that will be as unique as it is different from the rest. A text can be seen as a system of rules that are activated every time a person engages in an interaction with it. A system of principles, stylistic choices, axioms, beliefs, ideologies, and imperatives comes alive as it’s generated in real time.

Writing a text for this medium then becomes an exercise in setting an improvisational score. We don’t know exactly how it will be played, but we know that it’s going to have a certain bias, style, and aesthetic appeal. We know the relations we put into space will pull the meaning into certain directions that will be different from the generic, common denominator version of this reality. When the reader engages, they will pull the threads that resonate with them, and the text will respond accordingly.

That’s why we think that it can be interesting for authors and publishers to embrace the AI as a medium while also, of course, addressing the criticisms and concerns. AI should not replace the books, but it can provide an additional conversational medium to interact with the book’s content. For example, every book that we published on Circadian has a visual, auditory, and text chat representation. It opens up additional modalities to interact with its content.

For instance, we can visualize a book’s content as a knowledge graph, emphasizing its main topics and ideas. The reader can click on ideas they find relevant and get to the part of the book that resonates. They can also explore the relations between the ideas proposed by the book, reading it as a network of relations rather than following a linear narrative.

Alternatively, readers can talk to all of our books using a text chat interface. It allows us to embed agentic AI workflows that communicate Circadian’s goal to put words into action: allowing the books to speak to a particular situation our readers are interested to discuss. It also can be used to make books speak to each other and see how ideas from one book connect or contradict ideas from the others.

Voice interface is another version of this approach. It adds more intimacy to the conversation and lets the reader focus on the aesthetics of the book. It also helps engage the readers who would not normally like to read or write. Its auto-translation capabilities open the content up to the people who don’t speak the language the book was originally written in. NotebookLM can be used to turn books into conversations where the listener can intervene and steer the direction of the narrative.

This technology is still in its nascent form, and there are a lot of issues that have to be addressed: from content ownership and its impact on the environment to making it less synthetic, more human-like, and ensuring that content does not take over the style. However, as a new medium, it has a lot of potential and we at Circadian are happy to work with writers and publishers who are willing to try it out.

Circadian publishes books that bring “words into action.” But what does it really mean?

Philosophy, fiction, and art too often remain within the realm of the imaginary. There are so many interesting ideas, but they don’t get a chance to be realized to the fullest extent because the implementation strategies are either too difficult or too vague.

While there is no less validity in something abstract, we believe there are already too many practical ideas that serve simplistic self-optimization agendas. The world would benefit from ideas that propose different value systems, suspend the value-extracting drive towards constant growth, question reality, and make life more interesting, not more efficient.

This is why we do not publish self-help books but, rather, books that call people to action. We want each book to offer a concrete strategy to make whatever it is that it proposes into something real, materialized, able to exist here and now or — at least — in the near future.

We ask the authors to propose the concrete steps one could take to try out their version of reality. It turns out that the easiest way to do that is to go through embodying the practice and making it a part of a daily ritual, but we are not limited to the physical realm.

Its objective is to induce nonlinearity in perception and action, promoting what we refer to as “natural” dynamics in everyday life. This approach promotes the full spectrum of resilience: not only the adaptive and assimilative qualities but also the ability to persist, push through, and transform.

Inspired by ecology, dynamical systems theory, physical practice research, and scientific language, it tells a visual story of waves, 4 different cycles of change, and the patterns they form in space and time. An accompanying card game can be used as a reading device that helps the reader to explore the narrative of the book in a nonlinear way.

The Book and the Card Game

The book begins with outlining the basic building blocks of reality: waves and the different types of dynamics they represent. For instance, escalation and de-escalation, exponential growth and logarithmic saturation. We connect the notions and images of waves to related mathematical functions in order to have a precise and objective way of describing the basic states that they represent.

As the waves propagate through time and space, they form patterns. Some of those patterns may be expressed through cycles, such as seasonal changes, economic cycles, or regular breath. These are responsible for regeneration and stability.

Some of those patterns are more complex in nature and enable a high level of adaptivity and resilience in natural systems. This is achieved through so-called non-equilibrium stability, where long-term existence is defined not by a static state, but, rather, a shifting metastable process.

For instance, the image at the top represents a snapshot of such dynamics in population growth. Each dot represents a center of population, and the area around it is its size. A temporary non-equilibrium balance is achieved through each center taking the space that it needs without overtaking the other. A truly non-totalitarian approach where everything has its space and time.

The idea of the practice is to induce this way of existence in perception and movement. Embracing the 4 different states of change and regularly oscillating between them, following an 8-like pattern. Shifting between zooming in / zooming out and focusing / exploring.

Practical Applications: Thinking and Reading

In practical terms, this can be applied in learning and reading. Perceiving the text in a focused way and then shifting to a more exploratory type of reading where we attempt to zoom out and find how this particular text connects to other discourses or exploring the gaps and the blind spots within. The same approach can be applied to thinking. If ideas are too interconnected, trying to make them disconnect. If the ideas are too dispersed, trying to better connect them. The intention is to give every possible structure a time and space to emerge, to explore a different modality of perception, different types of attention, in order to not focus on only one way of seeing reality but rather explore several of them at the same time (polysingularity).

Practical Applications: Physical Movement

A similar approach can also be attempted in our physical interactions with ourselves and with the environment. We can induce each of those 4 different types of change through breathing. A repetitive regenerative one, a normal breathing at a habitual rate (8-12 breath cycles a minute), a highly adaptive transiet fractal breath (irregular patterns that change every 4 counts), pattern-shifting complex breath (e.g. breath hold or sustained, unnaturally long cycles). Each of those states has an advantage and having an ability to embody every one of them increases one’s adaptivity, regenerative capacity, and resilience to stress as well as heightened sensitivity to external stimuli.

Flying Without Means offers a systematic introduction to the various registers of autonomous flying. Entering the flight mode through the body and the heart, the preliminary course offers a user manual to assist the reader in independent flying. Based on the two complementary methods of unassisted flying – jumping without landing and throwing oneself on the ground but missing it – Book One focuses on the daily repetition of one hundred burpees as a foundation for the first unassisted flight. Based on over ten years of consistent practice, the book superimposes the continuum of take-off and landing on a daily hundredfold repetition.

This book offers a series of psychogeographical insights, organised as notes, alongside a stop-motion animation of the technique. Activated by the continuity of the reader’s practice, this preliminary course in flying is a springboard of practice for beginners and intermediate practitioners. This workbook is not exhaustive and has been written alongside and during the daily practice of the technique. Accordingly, these two hundred notes on one hundred burpees form an intuitive guide with a set of reflective coordinates and a dynamic space for making your own experiences and mapping your own paths as you continue to grow through your own practice.

About the Author:

ILYICH is a pilot of ambiguous origin.

The author’s name, ILYICH, was initially lost in the early 2000s after leaving Ukraine as a refugee. Frequently changing locations, moving in and out of institutional and in-formal frameworks, and engaging with complex notions of access, space and infrastructure have become the orbits of ILYICH’s daily attention.

To ensure smooth sailing through the alternating waves of dense and spacious moments, the care and maintenance of the main means of transport – the body, Ukr. тiлo (tilo) – has become a matter of urgent and daily necessity. Developing a tilo-attentive practice, attending to and through the body, and moving through life with attention, became the starting point for exploring the practice presented in this book.

In 2014, ILYICH first took up the practice of one hundred burpees to cultivate the ease with which the multiple gravitational fields of human experience can be navigated. Years later, convinced by direct experience of the anti-gravitational potential of the practice, burpees form one of several elementary units contributing to the embodiment of a robust and nimble spaceship. Flying Without Means is the first book in the preliminary course on flying, embarking on this distant flight and transporting body, mind and spirit in the envelope of practice.

On May 14th, 2024, Circadian writer Noam Assayag welcomed greek artist Mary Marinopoulou who just returned from a residency in Klaipėda, Lithuania, for a whole day of participatory urban (and self-) exploration in Athens. It was an occasion to develop a dialog between her walking methodology, the Absorb Ensemble, and Noam Assayag’s hands-on book Activating Cities, leading the participants to perceive and build upon details from their urban surrounding, within an ecology of attention.

The resulting workshop, Walking Athens, also included DIY notebook-binding and will serve as a template for a patient exploration of our neighbourhood, in concentric cercles, with friends, strangers and neighbours. Thanks to the magic of cyanotype and to the sunlight streaming in KOKTO’s courtyard, collected items and fragments found in the street became blue shadows on the cover of the notebooks the participants took home to continue journaling.

Whether picking a card from a new deck or picking one up from the street, walkers joined an uninterrupted surrealist game between cities, using happenstance to get a prompt in the style of « pay attention to X for the next hour ». The rules of the games, taken from different chapters of Activating Cities, were exhibited in KOKTO’s library area, as part of the installation « Forty Flowers of Attention ». And so, if you find a card on the sidewalk, don’t hesitate to ask Noam for a personalized (and typewritten) attention-prompt to keep this game of “noticing” going.
