Unmoored / Unbound brings together works that explore themes of loss, transition, liberation, freedom, and deliverance. The exhibition takes its dual title seriously, presenting art that sits at the intersection of release and uncertainty, where the experience of being unmoored from the familiar opens onto something larger and less defined.
The collaboration with Powerhouse Arts, the Gowanus arts center and fabrication facility that has become one of Brooklyn’s most vital creative spaces, gives the exhibition a fitting home. The industrial scale and open spirit of the venue amplifies the show’s themes, providing room for works that think expansively about what it means to break free.
Unmoored / Unbound is a timely exhibition, arriving at a moment when questions of transition and liberation feel especially urgent. BWAC’s juried format brings together a range of voices and practices united by a shared inquiry into what lies beyond the bounds of the familiar.

Coil & Cord Studio presents Between Ash and Light, the first solo exhibition in New York City by painter and mixed-media artist Xiaorui Huang. The show opens with a public reception on Thursday, May 28, 2026 from 6:30–9 pm and remains on view through June 20, 2026 at 200 6th Street in Brooklyn.
Between Ash and Light brings together large-scale paintings combining vigorous brushwork, layered mixed media, and collage to engage directly with personal and collective stories. Huang’s work centers themes of feminism, environmental justice, political resistance, and the struggles of marginalized communities in Asian American contexts and beyond.
The exhibition includes Huang’s Anger series, created in response to the deadly 2022 fire in a predominantly Uyghur neighborhood of Urumqi, Xinjiang, which sparked protests across China. The series transforms grief and collective resistance into visual testimony. A member of the artist-run cooperative Bowery Gallery, Huang has shown work in New York at the Shirley Fiterman Art Center and Powerhouse Arts, and internationally at the Saatchi Gallery in London.

The exhibition originates from a conversation between David and Judy Pfaff several years ago—one that moved fluidly from Pfaff’s mentorship under Al Held to her deep friendships with Elizabeth Murray and her admiration for Frank Stella. While the four were not literally “in unison” at any single point in time, their shared rigor, geometric language, and refusal to accept painting’s limits bound them together.
Held’s vast spatial illusions, Murray’s shaped canvases, Pfaff’s sculptural environments, and Stella’s architectural constructions each challenge the flat plane. Their approaches diverge, but all insist that painting can occupy space—physically, optically, and conceptually. Viewed together, the works reveal how these artists bent geometry toward personal vocabularies, tested painting’s edges, and redefined what a picture could be.
The exhibition closes with Pfaff’s 2005 tribute to Held, originally published in The Brooklyn Rail, a statement that resonates across all four practices: painting as frontier, deep space as possibility, and the ongoing search for forms that open rather than contain.
This gathering—decades in the making—finally brings these artists into literal conversation. In this moment, Held, Murray, Pfaff, and Stella are indeed Singing in Unison.

Smack Mellon’s latest exhibition, Dead Parrot Radio, finds Armando Guadalupe Cortés reimagining communication—between people, across distances, and even across species. The large-scale installation brings together steel sculptures modeled after communication towers, a performance stage built around a record player inherited from the artist’s father, and a sound work that pairs family recordings with the chatter of their pet parrots. What emerges is a portrait of longing: messages that travel but don’t quite land, connections attempted but never fully secured.
Cortés threads stories from family history, folklore, and lived experience into objects that feel both industrial and deeply personal. Parrot and macaw feathers appear throughout the gallery—formed into orbs or stitched into a maritime signal flag that reads, pointedly, “I wish to communicate with you.” Yet even this gesture is complicated: parrots perceive color differently than humans, making the signal legible to us but possibly meaningless to them.
Across towers, feathers, and sound, Cortés uses the exhibition to stage a gentle but persistent call—one shaped by migration, memory, and the ache of distances that technology can’t fully bridge.

440 Gallery opens its 21st Annual Small Works Show this weekend, a long-standing exhibition that that features work no larger than twelve inches in any direction.. This year’s edition, curated by Yara Doumani, brings together artists from across the country.
Small scale can often encourage a more intimate encounter, and Doumani’s selection leans into that dynamic. The show spans sculpture, painting, fiber, mixed media, and photography, creating a dense but lively presentation that rewards close viewing. The pieces range from the whimsical to the contemplative, highlighting how constraint can be a powerful creative engine.
“It has been an honor to curate the 2025 Small Works Show at 440 Gallery,” Doumani notes. “This year’s exhibition showcases the immense diversity of forms and themes conveyable through small-scale works…These small works invoke curiosity, delight, and important questions about our world and collective being.”
Doumani, a Brooklyn-based Palestinian American curator and material culture historian, currently works with the Brooklyn Museum’s Arts of Africa, Asia, and the Islamic World. Her curatorial approach reflects a deep interest in how objects carry meaning—an idea that resonates throughout the exhibition.

The International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP) Fall Open Studios is a presentation of international contemporary art by the 33 artists and curators from 22 countries in residence. Guest speaker artist Martha Wilson will make remarks at 7pm during the opening reception.
This event is free and open to the public.
Three times a year, ISCP invites the public to engage with its cohort of international artist and curator residents in their individual studios. Residents present recent projects, work in progress, site-specific installations and their archives to a large audience of professionals and art enthusiasts from New York and beyond. Concentrated in a three-story postindustrial loft building in East Williamsburg, ISCP supports the creative advancement of artists and curators from around the world, presents exhibitions and talks year-round, and fosters cultural exchange. From 1994 to the present, ISCP has hosted over 2,000 alumni hailing from more than 105 countries. Today, ISCP’s Open Studios, a three-decade tradition, continues to be the organization’s signature event.
Visitors can also explore two exhibitions at ISCP: Carried Over, guest curated by TK Smith, and Maya Jeffereis: Land of Eternal Summer, curated by Melinda Lang, Director of Programs and Exhibitions. Carried Over explores the creative strategies of Braxton Garneau, Remy Jungerman, and Belinda Kazeem-Kami?ski, three ISCP alumni with African and Indigenous roots, who tell profound stories of place and displacement, of resilience and resistance. Ground Floor resident Maya Jeffereis debuts a new video installation for her exhibition that reframes overlooked histories of the Japanese diaspora in Brazil through a poetic blend of archival documentation, firsthand accounts and experimental film techniques.

Please note that the entrance to ISCP has seven steps and a ramp, which is ADA compliant. There are seven artist studios and one exhibition space which can be accessed on the first floor of ISCP. There is an accessible bathroom on the first floor at the end of the hallway, up one step, where the artist studios are located. To access the second floor there is a staircase with a grab bar installed on the right side with 22 steps. The second floor has 22 artist and curator studios, one exhibition space, and a lounge where remarks by our guest speaker will take place. To access the third floor there is a staircase with a grab bar installed on the right side with 24 steps. The third floor has five artist and curator studios. This edition of the fair features Studio Hypersonic’s mesmerizing kinetic sculptures and a dramatic Met Cloisters–inspired bar installation with an interactive tapestry portrait experience. The unique fair features art you can take home, starting at $100, and gives visitors the chance to engage directly with the artists. New this fall, the Artisan Section spotlights work from three Brooklyn creative hubs: Clay Space, Dirtbag ArtHaus, and the Textile Arts Center.

Sundarji and Hunter began creating handcrafted versions of subway decor after noticing the similarities between the tiled grids of New York City subway mosaics and knitting patterns. Their work expanded into recreating an entire subway car and other station motifs through knitting, quilting, and needlepoint techniques. Today, the project travels as a mobile art installation—part gallery, part maker space.

This year marks our 10th RHOS and to celebrate we have organized the
RHOS Sculpture Garden in Erie Basin Park behind Ikea,Brooklyn.

The use of acrylic and painted wood creates eye-catching textures while also allowing for the play of light and shadows throughout the day. Lo’s work is soft and surreal and full of symbolism. Motivated by a lifelong dedication to play, she is not bound by one material and works in murals and public art sculptures.
Contribute to this public art installation! The “What Shapes Our Brooklyn Project” is now open. Brooklyn residents are invited to draw a shape that represents Brooklyn through their unique lens. Shapes can be representational or abstract. From the pool of submitted shapes, the artist will select several dozen and bring them to life as part of the installation at Building 92.

Animalia, a national juried show, explores humankind’s millennia-long obsession with animals as the subject of art. The earliest known examples of abstract thinking and artistic skills by our ancestors are painted depictions of pigs found on cave walls in Indonesia. In the intervening 45,000 years since their creation, he enduring fascination with the representation of animal in art has continued and flourished. Threaded Visions: Fashion in Art is a second national juried show to kick off the season. Fashion has long been more than just utilitarian protection from the elements – it is a statement of self-expression, reflecting culture, identity, and time. Throughout history artists have depicted fashion in their work, capturing trends and styles that tell stories of class, power, and innovation. Simultaneously, fashion designers have drawn inspiration from art, incorporation techniques, textures and narratives from painting, sculptures, and architecture into their creations. Threaded Visions presents dialogue between these two modes of expression.
Order/Chaos is the theme of 2025’s first BWAC member exhibition. Order and chaos are often superficially considered opposites, yet both ideas depend upon the other for definition. They often coexist in tension. In this exhibition, BWAC artist explore how they define the two and deal with order and chaos in their work and lives. Expect a wide variety of approaches in answer, as diverse as the member artists.
BWAC’s featured member artist for the spring season is Sergei Saarkian, offering a survey of landscape paintings entitled Dreamscapes: Reimagining What was Left Behind. Saarkian landscapes transcend traditional boundaries, offering a reimagined world where memory and history intertwine. These works explore the shifting terrains shaped by migration, conflict, and the passage of time, inviting viewers to contemplate the hidden stories within the land.
All four shows open Saturday, April 26 and will remain on display through Sunday, May 18, each weekend between the hours of 1 to 6 PM, at the BWAC Gallery, housed in the historic Beard and Robinson Stores Warehouse at 481 Van Brunt St. in Red Hook, Brooklyn.

The Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition (BWAC) is an artist-run organization and an incorporated 501(c)(3) nonprofit, operating BWAC Gallery. This exhibition marks Hakimian’s first solo exhibition internationally and is personally curated by Maria Yoon, a renowned filmmaker, entrepreneur, and museum consultant, who brings her unique vision to this showcase of Hakimian’s compelling artistry.
Garo Hakimian, an emerging talent often mistaken for the work of George Baselitz, is known for his innovative approach to contemporary art. His body of work explores themes of identity, healing, and the human experience, reflecting a deep engagement with personal and collective narratives that draw upon his Armenian heritage and the complexities of modern life.
Hakimian’s journey as an artist has been profoundly influenced by his upbringing in Montreal, Canada, where he was inspired by the vibrant arts community nurtured by his late father, a dedicated supporter of the arts. Through his artistic practice, Hakimian seeks to embody the transformative power of creativity, encouraging viewers to reflect on their own stories and experiences. His works, which include dynamic self-portraits and expressive pieces such as “WWIII,” “WWIV,” and “Fish of God,” serve as poignant reflections of his inner journey. Each piece is a testament to resilience and growth, inviting audiences to engage with the multifaceted nature of human emotion.
Hakimian often uses a mix of mediums, including spray paint, oil sticks, and charcoal, creating a fluidity that mirrors the essence of freedom and healing. His art has gained recognition not only in traditional gallery settings but also through the expansive reach of social media, allowing him to connect with a diverse audience and validate his artistic identity.

Visitors can stroll along the charming tree-lined Atlantic Avenue through the historic neighborhoods of Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill, Boerum Hill and Downtown Brooklyn to see art of various mediums including paintings, drawings, three-dimensional art, mixed media, and photography. We invite artists to create a “Feast of Fate” through diverse mediums, exploring the connection and tension between real-world choices and imagined destinies. By deconstructing and reinterpreting the concepts of “stars” and “dining,” artists will explore the delicate balance between fate and free will.
For this exhibition, the gallery will be transformed into a grand dining table, inviting interaction between the audience and the artworks to find their “predestined seat.” Through this experience, “Dining on the Stars” inspires a new perspective on the interplay of fate and choice in life’s journey.
