When a law is made in the US , my nephew said, eornyvee thinks about how to avoid obeying it. And, finally, my own observation of cultural differences involves competition. I am quite competitive , and at the time I visited Changchun as a team leader, I was eager to bring along a Scrabble board to help my students improve their English. Of course, I also wanted to teach them to keep score. After all , I thought, what’s the point of playing a game if you don’t know how to keep score. In the first game, we teamed up: I had one student on my side (Team 1)and there were two students teamed together as our opponents (Team 2).As we played I showed the students the rudiments of the scoring system and how to look for the hot spots to double or even triple their score. To my great surprise, when a member of Team 2 caught on, she was very excited to share this information with my partner. She would say to us on Team 1, Oh, look, you can get a good score here. I was my observation that while I thought of competing against Team 2, the Chinese students thought of competing against the board. How can we get a good score using the board , not How can we get a better score than our opponents. It was a lesson for me. In my way, there were losers. In their way, we all were winners.

Here is my take on it..There should NOT be bday patries that include friends until the kids are old enough for a drop-off party. Keep the patries for the under five set for family ONLY. Once the kids are old enough to be dropped off then do a kids party. I refuse to go to a kids birthday party and hang there for 2 hours. I get very stabby so I didn’t allow patries until they were five and I didn’t let other parents stay as their parents also make me stabby. Okay, maybe my kids will need therapy for their lack of friends bday patries when they were in preschool but maybe not because OMG they are too young to remember and really, the party is more for the parents than the kids. Now, the kid patries that included wine and grown-up party games that I can swallow and attend with glee.Soapbox. Off.xoxo,t.P.S. Oh yeah you are adorable when you blog.

Looking at just one variable like this is very bad statistics. You can’t really draw conclusions in this way, it’s almost worse than using no data at all.

Here’s a fun story: I went on a trip to Japan with a girl who claimed to be “extremely sensitive to MSG.” She said it gave her “migraines” and “difficulty breathing,” amongst a litany of other adverse reactions. I asked if she’d been tested by an allergist, and she claimed she had gone to the doctor, but he told her she had a “sensitivity” to it, not an allergy (which I never believed, truth be told). In every restaurant we ate at in Japan, she would ask the server, “does this have MSG in it??” and the server would say “yes, it does” or “no, it doesn’t” and she would avoid the food that did and if it were unavoidable at a particular restaurant, she would grab a burger from McDonald’s instead. Needless to say, she ate a LOT of McDonald’s burgers for the week we were in Japan. During my trip, I met up with my brother, who lives in Japan, and the subject of McDonald’s hamburgers came up. My brother told me “McDonald’s hamburgers taste SO much better in Japan because the mayonnaise is made with MSG instead of salt.” My MSG-“sensitive” friend was not around when he told me this, so for the rest of our trip, I just snickered to myself as she continued to turn down delicious authentic Japanese food for McDonald’s burgers that she mistakenly believed were MSG-free.

If that’s not a perfect example of how full of shit most MSG “victims” are, then I don’t know what is.
