SCIENTOLOGY ACTS TO LEGALIZE AS RELIGION

Three Churches Given Charters by New Jersey

THE MOST certain thing about Scientology is that no one can be certain what this "Science of Certainty" will come up with next.

In February of this year, rumors that Scientology would become a religion lost their swaddling pantlets and became a full-fledged fact. Copies of charters to three organizations, known as the CHURCH OF AMERICAN SCIENCE, THE CHURCH OF SCIENTOLOGY, AND THE CHURCH OF SPIRITUAL ENGINEERING, chartered under the laws of the State of New Jersey, were proudly displayed in the Phoenix offices of the Hubbard Association of Scientologists. The Church of American Science is the parent organization for the three churches.

The news was received with mixed emotions. Some were outspokenly antagonistic to the idea. Some who'd nursed the glories of self-determinism since Book One couldn't subscribe to the new idea that the best way to win is to BECOME the enemy. Many from California feared that designating Scientology as a religion would classify it with that state's 9,857,385,237 cults.

WHY!

Undoubtedly, with many of you, receipt of "The ABERREE" will come as a surprise--pleasant or unpleasant. You may look at our response to popular demand (Ahem!) and think: "Ye gods! Something else to spend money for!" But you needn't. We don't care whether anyone subscribes or not. If no one does, we won't have to bother with a second issue. If too many subscribe, we might even be forced to get out something better.

At the time this is written, we haven't the slightest idea what The ABERREE is going to be like, nor where it goes from here. There are plenty of magazines and news bulletins in the field now--but there aren't enough good ones and there are too many bad ones. Some just want to publish something; some have a grudge against the human race and are trying to get revenge by sponsoring CO2, cyanide, or other "quick clearing" suits and devices; others just hope some day to make enough money to pay postage; one of the most interesting started as a "lazy letter", but be-

cause its 1.1 tone was higher than "Death on the Delaware", zoomed into wide popularity; one of the most pretentious is failing trying to prove you can gather moss while rolling. We have no goal for The ABERREE, and only two purposes: 1, to trample pet corns, and 2, we thought up a joke we wanted to give wide circulation - but now have forgotten the joke.

Those are our only reasons for existence. We think we'll survive - but we don't guarantee it. In fact, we're going to resist survival until you can't get rid of us with an H-Bomb (Hubbard-Bomb, that is). Also, we're going to resist getting rich off the magazine.

Maybe with these tenets for survival you'll find us on the newsstand alongside DEATH, The SATEVEBATH, and The GENTLEMEN'S HOME JOURNAL. But that's a couple months away. Right now, we're just experimenting.

We'd like to hear from you: news, suggestions, checks. We may print the checks, follow some of the news, and hire a staff with the suggestions.

We have a policy, clearly stated elsewhere on this page. We hope you take it as seriously as we do.

L. Ron Hubbard, M.D., But He's Not a Doctor of Medicine, Yet

The English scientist, Mr. C. D. Darlington, in a Conway Memorial Lecture on "The Conflict of Society and Science," published by Watts and Co., 1948, very aptly states: "Scientific discovery is often carelessly looked upon as a creation of some new knowledge. This is true of the strictly trivial discoveries. It is not true of the fundamental discoveries, such as the laws of mechanics, of chemical combinations, of evolution, on which scientific advance ultimately depends. These always entail the destruction of or disintegration of old knowledge before the new can be created." He later says, "It is no accident that bacteria were first understood by a canal engineer, that oxygen was first isolated by a Unitarian minister, that the theory of infection was established by a chemist, the theory of heredity by a monastic school teacher, and the theory of evolution by a man who was unfitted to be a university instructor in either botany or zoology." He closes by saying, "We need a Minister of Disturbances, a destroyer of routine; and underminer of complacency."

The Church, Religion, and Scientology

If you're asking: "Is Scientology a religion - and many were even before it had been incorporated as a church - you might better ask: "What is religion?" Webster defines religion as having been taken from the Latin "religion, meaning taboo, or restraint." This is a dichotomy of the connotation given the word by Scientologists. Scientology seeks to free man - not to bind him.

A few comparisons:

The church waits for the body to die before the soul can be freed to be judged and damned.

Scientology seeks to free the soul (thetan) from the current body while the body still lives; to give the thetan freedom to use or discard the body, when and as it sees fit.

The church makes man an effect of a God it cannot locate or identify; takes away from man any self-determined goals beyond the limited ones of today and the hopes of a nebulous tomorrow.

Scientology tries to show that man is a god in his own right, with full power and province over his environment.

The church damns man for things that happened not of his own doing nor under his own control. For example: "The sins of the fathers shall be visited upon
the children, even to the third and fourth generations". Or, Adam and Eve ate of the Tree of Life in defiance of God's order, therefore condemning all mankind to a life of sin for which he will be individually and eternally punished. Or, someone named Christ died for our sins so that we might have salvation; but if you don't believe this, you'll be eternally damned.

Scientology says: "In the beginning and forever is the decision, and the decision is TO BE". (From "The Factors", 1953). The sin of sins could be a refusal to recognize your own postulate "to be", and to accept the implanted postulate that "you can be only be if - ".

The church says God is infinite, yet sits apart in judgment. Infinite out of what? And can an Infinite Being be more infinite one place than another? Some
may argue that this is a haggling over semantics, but if there are no words to describe what is meant by infinity, why has not one been invented?

Undoubtedly, there are many things yet to be learned about man and the multitude of universes in which he has, does, or will exist- we've probably only tapped the surface. It may be years before the infinity sign for the Eighth Dynamic - the Figure 8 lying on its side - will stand upright. At present, we accept the fact there is a Supreme Being, but no one yet has had the temerity to restrict him to a finite definition. Not in Scientology, anyway.

In announcing the action, officials of the H. A. S. stated that there is little doubt but what this stroke will remove Scientology from the target area of overt and covert attacks by the medical profession, who see their pills, scalpels, and appendix-studded incomes threatened. Several auditors who in the past have found themselves facing prejudiced courts or behind bars - or who practiced in fear that each pre-clear might be only a spy with a warrant behind his engram bank - had little sympathy with the Californians' arguments.

With the formation of the Church of Scientology in the State of California by Dr. J. Burton Farber of Glendale, and the granting of a charter, auditors in that area can avoid the recent fiasco in which a Pasadena practitioner is reported to have spent 10 days in that city's torture chamber for "practicing medicine without a license". On March 5, Dr. Farber appeared in Phoenix, and before an audience of more than 30 clinical students, taped a ceremony in which L. Ron Hubbard was made a Doctor of Divinity and awarded Certificate No. One. This gives him legal authority to lecture, perform marriages, baptisms, and other religious rites.

At the same time, as part of this ceremony, Dr. Farber, a minister in another church, was made a Doctor of Divinity in the Church of American Science under the New Jersey charter. Other ministers to be ordained will be graduates of the clinical courses.

The Church of Scientology also has been chartered in Arizona, giving it legality in three states. Similar action is being taken in Michigan an area in which control is demonstrably bold and vicious.

New Jersey Charters Scientology as Church

A copy of the charter given the Church of American Science, mother church of Scientology, is reproduced below:

CERTIFICATE OF INCORPORATION
of
THE CHURCH OF AMERICAN SCIENCE

These presents are to certify that we, L. Ron Hubbard, Sr., of the Borough of Medford Lakes, County of Burlington and State of New Jersey, L. Ron Hubbard, Jr., and Henrietta Hubbard, of the City and County of Camden and State of New Jersey; John Galusha, R. R. #1, Box 394, of the City and County of Pueblo and State of Colorado; Verna Greenough of Bellmawr Park, in the County of Camden and State of New Jersey, and Barbara Bryan, of the City and County of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, do hereby associate ourselves into a corporation under and by virtue of an Act of the Legislature of the State of New Jersey entitled "The Corporation and Association Not for Profit Act." (Title 15 of the Revised Statutes of 1937, N.J.S.A.) and the various amendments thereto and supplements thereof for the lawful purpose other than pecuniary profit as hereinafter stated and to that end we do by this instrument certify that:

The Church of American Science exists upon this Creed:

1. That God works within Man his wonders to perform.

2. That Man is his own soul, basically free and immortal, but deluded by the flesh.

3. That Man has a God-given right to his own life.

4. That Man has a God-given right to his own reason.

5. That Man has a God-given right to free and open communications.

6. That the human spirit is the only truly effective therapeutic agent available to Man.

7. That a civilization can endure only so long as both spiritual and material needs find place within its structure and that a civilization is lost when God and the Spirit are forgotten by its leaders and its people.

8. That Man and the Nations of Man carry with them their own Salvation and that teachings exist sufficient to effect it.

The Church of American Science exists to assist the strong and the weak, to suppress the wrong-doer and to champion the right and Godly. Its mission is to carry to Man revelations and teachings and practices of the present and the ages past and to assist him, his family and communities to live in greater peace and harmony.

The Holy Book of this church consists of a collection of the works of and about the Great Teachers, including the work, St. Luke.

The Saints of this Church are the great messiahs and religious philosophers.

The specific teachings of this church concern its Holy Book and those contributions on the Mind and Spirit made in more recent times as a result of scientific investigations concerning the human spirit and the physical universe.

The Church of American Science desires to be chartered:

1. To disseminate its creed and pursue its goals.

2. To Charter Churches and congregations.

3. To found and conduct spiritual guidance centers.

4. To engage in social work and to engage in charitable undertakings.

5. To accept fees and donations.

6. To own, rent real and personal property.

7. To found orders and societies within itself as needful.

8. To practice the teachings and beliefs and to propagate in accordance with its tenets healing of the sick and suffering by prayer or other spiritual means without the use of drugs or material remedy.

THIRD: The said corporation shall be located at 527 Cooper Street, in the City and County of Camden and State of New Jersey and it shall there have its registered office. The agent in charge thereof shall be L. Ron Hubbard, Sr. The corporation shall not only conduct its activities at the address given but shall conduct them likewise throughout the State of New Jersey and outside of the same.

FOURTH: The number of trustees selected for the first year of the existence of the said corporation shall be three and the names and post office addresses shall be as follows:
