To me, my arcade cabinet

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’re all too aware of the ’90s X-Men rebirth that’s on the way. Headlined by a brand new Disney+ TV show that looks to continue the storyline from the iconic 1992 cartoon, there are brand new toys on the horizon, and now we know an arcade cabinet as well.

From the 3/4 scale masters at Arcade1Up, the new X-Men ’97 arcade machine will be delivering a series of eight Marvel Comics video game classics, and feature all-new deco. Fans will find a lighted marquee bearing the new series’ title, plus a 17″ monitor, faux coin doors, a two-player control suite, and wi-fi functionality (for leaderboards).

Plus, as the cherry on top, all of the above will be highlighted by fresh X-Men ’97 artwork, splashed across the sides of the unit. Check it out in all its glory below.

Pre-orders for the above are posted right now, via a portal on Arcade1Up’s online shop. The cab has a price tag of $499.99 USD, and looks like it’ll be shipping pretty fast, and heading out fans starting the week of April 25th, 2024. That’s just a month behind the debut of X-Men ’97 on Disney+ by the way, which lands on March 20th.

The trilogy

With a new film on the horizon, and a highly anticipated TV show landing this month, Star Wars is once again on the minds of fans. So it’s a good time then for Arcade1up to deliver its stand up Star Wars arcade unit.

Announced earlier this year, the unit comes complete with all three of Atari’s classic arcade titles. If you’re unfamiliar with what those are, they put you in the seat of an X-Wing, and up against the Imperial Navy in three vector-graphic titles that span the original trilogy.

Aside from faithful editions of the games, fans will also get a pretty great-looking reproduction of the cabinet itself in 3/4 scale. Arcade1up has included the arcade-originals’ unique yoke controller for this release, as well as a branded riser.

Unlike the typical ones that you can pick up separately, the included riser has Star Wars branding. So it’ll look a little cooler in your game room, and will bump up the 3/4 size Arcade1up unit to something that more accurately represents a full-size cab.

The cabinet is ready right now for purchase at $499.99 USD, and can be ordered from “major retailers” across the US, like GameStop and Walmart.

Pizza time!

Fairly quietly, Arcade1up has been accruing an incredibly impressive lineup of licenses for their 3/4 scale arcade cabinets. Today’s launches represent the latest of those, with both Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Marvel Super Heroes units hitting retail.

Maybe the company’s most hotly anticipated machines yet, these two include some stellar titles. That’s not all though, as the TMNT standup also is the first ever four-player effort from Arcade1up.

As 3/4 scale, it might be a little crowded, so the arcade machine comes complete with a deck that’s actually wider than the cab. That should make playing with a full crew of Turtles a little more comfortable.

Both machines also come with risers, so you can dig in while standing. As anyone who’s played arcade machines before can tell you, that’s definitely the “right” way to play.

All-new deco

What we have here though, is something all together new. Arcade1up has announced a series of units that sport looks that are a little more… fancy. Jet black in color, the pair of tabletop units that will kick off the Black Series include Pac-Man and Street Fighter II.

As usual, the two games will include more than just the headline titles too. The included list breaks down a little something like this:

Both units will sport original art (the logos), as well as full-size joysticks and buttons. The display is, of course, split in the middle so both players (seated head-to-head) can have their own view of the action. It’s a good size too, at 17″.

Both are available for pre-order now exclusively via Arcade1up.com, and are scheduled to ship some time this December. Either one will run you $499 USD.

Arcade1Up heroics

Arcade1Up is, more or less, the only company out there making “real” arcade cabinets for your home. Coming in at 3/4 scale to an actual arcade unit, the 1Up cabs are extremely accurate to the originals, usually down to the art on the sides.

The company, in its second year of production, has improved on their design a bit too. Each cab now comes with a “deck protector” and overlay of plastic that you can add to the control area. That was perhaps their one weakness, since the graphics tended to rub off with extended use on the first wave of standup.

I don’t know whether the Marvel Super Heroes cabinet is officially still a part of wave 2, or the start of wave 3, but either way, it’s looking great. Included is the title game, Capcom’s Marvel Super Heroes, and also two more.

Fans get X-Men: Children of the Atom and the long-lost The Punisher arcade game too. Housing these three titles will be the usual design from Arcade1Up. That includes a 17″ screen, stereo sound setup, and arcade type control setup, complete with sticks.

The base version of the cab will be hitting retail, but a special limited edition is available right now to pre-order. There will be 8000 of these made to coincide with Marvel Comics 80th anniversary. So while there won’t be a super-small amount of them, they’re not exactly unlimited either.

Just like the real thing, only smaller

We haven’t really been following along with Arcade1up here at BG, but it’s not because the machines aren’t intriguing. If you’re unaware of the company, all you really have to know is that they make 3/4 size arcade cabinets for the home.

These aren’t incredibly expensive things either, as each one run a few hundred. That might sound like a lot, but go check eBay for a full size quarter-muncher and you’ll see that it really isn’t. And unlike the actual arcade machines, these carry a few game a piece.

If you’re looking at the Street Fighter one, you get the Champion Edition, Super, and Super Turbo. Pretty cool. If you’re a big fan of any of the games that the company features, these are mighty appealing (even though you have to sit to play ’em).

Better than the first selection? Maybe. That MK cab is mighty cool all by itself. Just a note though for those planning their at-home mini-arcades, as the new launches will be staggered throughout the year.

Final Fight and Space Invaders will arrive in February, with bar classic Golden Tee in June, and both MK and Karate Champ in September. So plan accordingly.

We also mentioned new form factors. While there’s not a ton of info yet on those, industry site TheToyBook is reporting that there will be both wall-mounted and countertop units. So you should be able to fit most spaces with what Arcade1up has on tap for their catalog.
