How the 2025 Emmy Awards Highlighted Audience Attention Dilemmas

In today’s attention economy, it’s harder than ever to keep an audience engaged, whether at a Hollywood awards show or a corporate sales meeting.

At last night’s Emmy Awards, host Nate Bargatze and CBS tried a bold approach to address the attention dilemma by adding a twist to winners’ speeches. They announced a $350,000 donation to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, but with a catch…if a speech ran over 45 seconds, $1,000 would be deducted from the total.

The bit changed the rhythm of the night. Some winners who ran long doubled down by pledging $1,000 of their own, turning a lighthearted gimmick into something more meaningful. For a show usually focused on fame and fortune, the spotlight shifted, however briefly, to supporting kids at the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

For Centrifuge Media, Inc., a Strategic Event Communications agency, the moment spotlighted a challenge its team helps clients solve every day: audience attention. From sales kickoffs to recognition ceremonies, agenda management is one of the most common pain points clients face.

“We’re constantly working with clients on how to hold attention in a way that feels natural, engaging and on-message,” said Centrifuge Media’s Executive Director of Client Relations, Jack McDonald, “The Emmys experiment was an extreme example, but the underlying issue is one we see in corporate events all the time.”

Centrifuge’s strategies include building proper break times into agendas, mixing up how content is delivered through videos or branded segments, and preparing speakers to communicate more effectively. Training often focuses on helping leaders deliver messages with clarity, energy and emotional connection.

As the Emmys reminded us, audience engagement can’t be taken for granted. Whether addressing millions on live television or a few hundred in a ballroom, the competition for attention is relentless.

The initiative sparked mixed reactions from viewers, industry insiders and social media. Some praised the idea as an inventive way to keep the show moving, while others criticized it as gimmicky or distracting.

How did you feel about the approach the Emmy Awards took last night?

Q&A with Ernie Cottier: Communications Strategist, Strategy

Ernie Cottier recently joined Centrifuge Media as a Communications Strategist! We gave Ernie some time to settle into the role then asked him a few questions about his career and interests!

Q:

What was your path to Centrifuge Media?

A:

I graduated in December of 2020 with a bachelor’s degree in mass communications with an emphasis on broadcast journalism.  I immediately began working for a news station in South Dakota as a live reporter, anchor, and producer. I moved down to North Carolina in the summer of 2023 to be closer to some family and friends while also wanting to live in a warmer climate. I worked in PR for just under two years after moving here for a firm in Raleigh. I was excited when I heard about the opportunity at Centrifuge Media, as I thought it would combine many of the skills I had gained in previous positions while still providing ample room for me to acquire new ones.

Q:

What aspect of your role are you most excited about and why?

A:

Seeing ideas come to life. One day, you’re part of a team brainstorm to come up with ideas for a client’s event, and the next, you’re seeing a room light up, watching hundreds of people enjoy something I helped create.

Q:

You can offer a client one piece of advice when partnering with Centrifuge Media. What would it be?

A:

Don’t be afraid to dream big. Some of the best things come from the most unconventional ideas.

Q:

What specific projects or moments in your career/life has fueled your passion and kept you motivated?

A:

Helping people face their fears has always been something that excites me. Whether it was encouraging someone nervous about being on TV, or at Centrifuge supporting someone anxious about an event, or stepping on stage, I love coming alongside them, preparing together, and then seeing their joy when they realize they’ve overcome it.

Q:

What do you like to do in your free time when you aren’t working?

A:

I love playing and watching sports, especially with my family. I originally went to school to become a sports broadcaster so I could talk sports with people for hours. I have also coached both soccer and basketball and would love to coach my daughters someday.

Q:

What is inspiring you right now?

A:

My daughters Lily and Lainey. Many people lose their curiosity as they age, but seeing my daughters so curious and unafraid to ask questions inspires me to do the same.  They say “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks,” but I think if people are curious enough, they’ll always be learning new tricks.

Q:

For a presentation or speech finale: End with a big “mic drop” moment or leave them wanting more?

A:

I love a good mic drop moment because it can also lead people to wanting more.

Centrifuge Media Named 2025 Top 50 Best Places to Work

The Triangle Business Journal has named Centrifuge Media one of the 2025 Top 50 Best Places to Work and we couldn’t be more honored!

This recognition comes at a milestone moment, as we celebrate 20-years of growth. Along the way, the company has worked together to build a culture rooted in collaboration and continuous improvement, so it feels good to be recognized for that.

We asked a few of our team members to share what makes Centrifuge Media such a meaningful place to grow your career.

Here’s what they had to say:

Brandon Goldthwaite
“Having worked with Centrifuge for nearly all 20 years of its existence, including just over nine years as a full-time employee, this recognition reflects the collaborative spirit, shared values, and dedication to excellence that have kept me engaged and inspired throughout my tenure. This award is not just a testament to our workplace culture but also a personal affirmation of the meaningful impact we create together, which I’ve been privileged to contribute to for two decades.”

Matt Reyes
“It tells me that we’ve made great strides towards establishing a culture that I want to continue to be a part of.  Having been here for over 13 years, I’ve seen the culture evolve through the difficulties of massive growth, as well as the uncertainties that the pandemic unleashed (especially for our industry).  It’s nice to be part of a place that everyone feels like a valued member.”

Adrienne Bogner
“Since starting at Centrifuge Media over 13 years ago, I’ve seen many people come and go. However, to be a part of the team we have now – with so many talented, experienced, hardworking, and passionate people, it’s very inspiring. This award means a lot to me personally because I’ve seen the change, and how we’ve worked to refine our culture and team dynamics, to what it is today… a best place to work!”

Lauren Dearmore
“It’s wonderful to see Centrifuge, a place that I greatly admire and appreciate, be recognized with this honor. I’m proud of the journey and growth this team has experienced over the years.”

Chris Dahnke
“Centrifuge Media being peer-awarded as a Best Place to Work reinforces what I felt when I joined the team, that’s there something really special and unique about Centrifuge Media and I wanted to be part of it! One of the things that I believe stands out with Centrifuge Media being peer-awarded as a Best Place toWork, is that it shows the singular vision of the staff to work together to provide clients with a product that exceeds expectations, while enjoying the day to day camaraderie and the work environment.”

Keegan Girouard
“The people! I know that may seem cliché, but it truly is one of the main reasons that makes working here so great. We have a great group of people who work well together and challenge each other on a daily basis and that’s what makes it so special.”

Brandon Goldthwaite
“Not only the robust range of ages and experience within the company, but the different creative minds coming together to develop a design or theme for an event and to come up with something different, even if just slightly different to keep challenging us as a team. Moreover, the strong sense of camaraderie unites employees across all roles, fostering a supportive and collaborative culture. At Centrifuge Media, we prioritize mutual support and teamwork, creating a family-like atmosphere where every individual is valued and empowered to contribute.”

Matt Reyes
“The element of never settling into what’s been done before.  While there are elements that will be repeated throughout various projects, we are always looking for new and improved ways of executing and delivering the outcomes our clients count on.  This can be via new technologies, efficiencies, and strategies, allowing for each project to be better than the previous.”

Adrienne Bogner
“The travel potential is endless! There are so many places that I never would have been able to see outside of this role. Whether it’s to a new part of town, to a new city or even to a new country, the opportunities are unmatched. Also, every day feels fresh. Whether it be the internal schedule, the travel needs, the client interactions, or the internal networking, I’ve never had the same day twice.”

Casey Carpenter
“Centrifuge Media fosters collaboration, innovation, and creativity. It’s great to work beside a team that sparks so many great ideas!”

Ashton Gourlay
“Centrifuge Media is a great place to work because of the continuous motivation, support, and appreciation shown for hard work within the team. Our leadership is deeply committed not only to everyone’s growth and success, but also to producing meaningful and impactful events. This positive and inspiring culture, coupled with leadership’s dedication to investing in professional growth and personal success, makes Centrifuge Media an exceptional place to work!”

Lauren Dearmore
“It all comes down to our people. We have an innovative team that works hard and supports one another as we produce events that inspire and motivate thousands of attendees each year.”

Amy Schaller
“When you work for great people, work with an amazing staff, and enjoy your job…you love going to work each day.  Centrifuge Media is that type of company, offering a strong sense of community and team collaboration.”

Suzanne Tudman
“After having my daughter, I faced the challenge of balancing my passion for my career with my lifelong dream of being a mom. Centrifuge gave me the flexibility to adjust my schedule, which allowed me to continue doing the creative work I love while also being present for my family. That kind of support made a huge impact on me. I’m incredibly grateful to CMI for understanding that season of my life and making it possible to grow both personally and professionally.”

Matt Reyes
“Centrifuge has allowed me to grow in a direction that made the most sense to me.  While there are linear paths available, the company has always been open to allowing & encouraging people to grow in ways that may not fit that normal pattern.  For me, this was a pivot from the project management and travel side to focus in on more admin and finance elements for the company.  On a personal level, encouraging me to push outside of my comfort zone has allowed (and at times forced) me to become more rounded in my thought processes.”

Adrienne Bogner
“Being provided with new opportunities to grow, learn and advance my career has always been very important to me, and the leadership team at Centrifuge Media is hugely supportive of their employees. Our mantra of “promote from within” speaks volumes in that we invest in our team first. I’ve personally received promotions moving within roles of coordinator, manager, supervisor, and director. I know that my work and efforts are noticed and rewarded, and that is extremely valuable.”

Jack McDonald
“Besides my first one (Project Manager), every title I have had at Centrifuge over the years has been a completely new one for the company. Ownership has always been open-minded to ideas and provided me with opportunities to explore my own interests, as long as it was beneficial to the company. I have learned and grown so much by getting to figure things out!”

Casey Carpenter
“My manager is always encouraging me to grow and step out of my comfort zone.”

Lauren Dearmore
“Over the years, I’ve been trusted to tackle new challenges and new roles. It’s an incredible place to grow, and I’m a better strategist, teammate, and leader because of the Centrifuge team’s support.”

Suzanne Tudman
“Centrifuge Media has a strong, collaborative team where each individual is truly dedicated to their craft. We’re committed to delivering top-tier work, and that shared standard brings out the best in everyone. The environment is both professional and fun! Team outings and in-office training are something I genuinely look forward to. Most importantly, your contributions are valued and recognized, whether they’re big wins or small efforts. It’s a place where your work matters, and you feel like part of something meaningful.”

Matt Reyes
“If you have a passion for the industry, we’d love to have you on board.  Every role has its part to play, allowing for all kinds of individuals from diverse backgrounds to contribute in their own way.  Some like to travel, while others prefer the backend work.  Some are artistic or can help communicate messaging effectively.  While everyone might have specific tasks for a project, watching it all come together to create something better than the sum of its parts is an awesome experience.”

Lauren Dearmore
“We are driven by our values: teamwork, commitment to improvement, creativity, and a desire to embrace and initiate change. If you’re ready to push yourself creatively and to make an immediate impact supported by an incredible team, you’ll find that here at Centrifuge!”

Keegan Girouard
“Give us just one meeting/project, and you won’t want to go back to working with anyone else. Time and time again we hear from our clients about how great of a partnership and experience they have working with our team. From the early stages of planning on weekly calls, to the team onsite executing the meeting itself.”

Matt Reyes
“We will always be looking to find new ways to deliver your message.  Whether it be at the scientific level and making sure the information is communicated effectively or the sales level and needing to set the energy level and atmosphere, we always strive to make sure that everything exceeds expectations.  Then we try to make the next one even better.”

Jack McDonald
“Being on the Best Places to Work list means low turnover, which means our employees are invested in growing with our clients. Your success is our success! Our clients value the stability and genuine partnership they get with our long-tenured team.”

Lauren Dearmore
“We pursue your goals as if they were our own. At Centrifuge, you can trust that our team cares deeply about your event and that we’ll bring strategic insights, creativity, and executional excellence to each project.”

Amy Schaller
“Centrifuge Media is the type of agency that will bring your business goals to life in a creative, emotional, and impactful way. We strive to make our client’s message one that is unforgettable.”

Thank you

This honor is a reflection of our incredible team, the passion they bring to their work, and the community we’ve built together. To everyone who has contributed to Centrifuge Media’s story, the employees, partners, clients, and contractors…thank you!

New Tech for Life Sciences Events: InfoComm 2025 Takeaways

As a Strategic Event Communications agency our mission is simple: empower our clients to inspire and motivate their audience to make a commitment to lasting behavior change. That’s why we sent two of our Project Managers to InfoComm 2025 in Orlando. Tanner Highland and Fausto Turro set out to scout new tech for life sciences events and bring back key takeaways and fresh ways to elevate the audience and learner experience.

We caught up with Project Manager Tanner Highland post-InfoComm 2025 to get his thoughts, and spoiler alert, the future looks sharper, smarter, and more immersive than ever.

Centrifuge Media at InfoComm 2025 – Fausto Turro and Tanner Highland Standing by the sign “I am Pro AV”

“InfoComm is definitely focused more toward companies looking to purchase new technology,” Tanner shared, “but it is very cool to see what is potentially coming to the rental market in the upcoming years and checking out some smaller items that would be good fits for our inventory.”

That’s where we come in. We bridge the gap between shiny new tech and real, strategic use – turning AV trends into tools for behavior change at your life sciences events.

Centrifuge Media at InfoComm 2025 – Fausto Turro and Tanner Highland walking the floor. Featuring Robe Booth. Lighting and Design.

LED walls are leveling up from 3.5mm pixel pitch down to sub-1.0mm, LED walls are getting tighter and brighter. Tanner noticed tons of manufacturers showcasing ultra-high-resolution displays, meaning we can now create stunning visuals in tighter spaces, perfect for medical training, scientific storytelling, or compliance education.

“Lower pixel pitches bring shorter view distances and higher quality images,” he explained. “But they also demand more from your content strategy, processing, and show flow.”

Translation: AV can’t be an afterthought. If you want the wow-factor, you need the planning to back it up.

A keynote titled “2030 Vision: The Future of AV” featured President & CEO from Shure, Christine Schyvinck, and Chief Executive Officer DiversifiedEric Hutto, Plus VPs from Crestron and TELUS and AVIXA, influential execs all talking about how AV over IP and AI are transforming event infrastructure.

“We have been using protocols such as NDI and Dante for many years,” said Tanner, “but it is very clear that a main focus of every manufacture is the ability to have equipment connected and controlled over IP.”

On AI, Tanner shared “It seems like everyone is trying to find the best applications for AI in the AV industry.” He expanded, “One of the presenters compared people’s thoughts and hesitation about AI to the internet 20 years ago. There was a lot of hesitation about the internet and how it would affect the AV industry at that time and now it has a part in everything in the industry.” Highland reflected, “The point was that AI is in the very infancy of it being in the industry and that there is going to be some implementation that isn’t the greatest but as people continue to learn it and find better application that it will most likely be a large part of the AV industry in a decade from now.”

For life sciences clients, this means more efficient setups, smarter interactivity, and content that can adapt in real time. It is especially powerful for high-stakes learning environments.

Projection Mapping

Magic Projection mapping stole the spotlight this year and it caught Tanner’s attention. “It was everywhere,” he said. “I think it’s something we haven’t fully tapped into yet, and it’s a fresh, exciting way to present messaging.”

This could be a game-changer for biotech or pharma brands looking to get creative with storytelling and data visualization. Think: a room that shifts and responds as the narrative unfolds.

The Shure ANX4. This rack unit supports up to 24 wireless channels in the same space our current 4-channel setup occupies. “It’s especially great for international shows,” Tanner noted. “Less gear to ship, more flexibility onsite.” And with channel licenses that can be transferred between units, this is scalable audio with serious global appeal.

Tanner and the team are reviewing new software, logistics partners, and gear vendors they met at the show. But more importantly, we’re asking:

How do we take these AV trends and make them meaningful for your audiences?

Whether it’s LED precision, projection-mapped immersion, or AI-enhanced learning, we’re ready to help our life sciences partners educate, engage, and energize their people.

Let’s talk about your next event. We’ll bring the strategy, the tech, and the storytelling to drive behavior change.

Q:

Can you share what has been driving you to work passionately on your recent projects?

A:

Lately, I’ve been driven by the opportunity to tell Centrifuge Media’s story in a way that reinforces our value to both current and future partners. The “20-Year: Celebrating Excellence” anniversary campaign was a perfect example and more than just a celebration. It was a strategic showcase of our impact in the industry. Crafting that narrative reminded me how storytelling can strengthen relationships, positively promote our brand and culture, and open new doors.

Q:

What are some of your personal and business goals this year?

A:

This year, I’m focused on leading insight-driven campaigns that turn strategy into measurable results. My transition into the Client Strategy department has given me deeper access to the storytelling that builds trust and positions us as true partners. I’m excited to apply our Communication & Engagement Cycle (Anticipate, Activate, Apply) to Centrifuge Media’s own marketing, setting the same high standard we deliver for client event strategies.

Q:

Are there any projects or events you are most looking forward to this year?

A:

I’m especially excited about building on the momentum of our 20-Year campaign by merging our thought leadership efforts with our growing YouTube presence. Launching the channel to host the docuseries and short-form content was an experiment that proved the power of video in reaching new audiences. There’s huge potential to share insights in a more engaging and authentic way.

Q:

What motivates and drives you in your day-to-day work?

A:

I’m motivated by the full creative process. Taking strategic ideas, bringing them to life through thoughtful execution, and then measuring their real impact. Seeing ideas turn into outcomes not only drives results for the company but also fuels my own career growth and evolution.

Q:

How do you maintain a healthy work-life balance, and do you have any tips for your peers?

A:

Set boundaries.

Q:

What advice would you give to new employees joining Centrifuge Media to thrive in their roles?

A:

Always connect your work to its impact. Track your wins, big or small, and understand how they contribute to client success and internal growth.

Q:

Can you share what has been driving you to work passionately on your recent projects?

A:

Knowing that our work will inspire and motivate teams to dream big, take action, and make a difference in their communities is a powerful motivating force. It makes me excited to translate high-level strategic goals into meaningful experiences that resonate.

Q:

What are some of your personal and business goals this year?

A:

This year is all about “vision” for me. I’m looking ahead to where we want to be as a company and where I want to be professionally, then taking targeted action to bring that vision to life. That involves strategic planning, vision sharing, and creating space for collaboration and innovation across teams and with our clients.

Outside of work, I’m working to bring another dream to life – an advanced scuba diving certification. Learning new things and exploring the world will always be on my list of personal goals!

Q:

Are there any projects or events you are most looking forward to this year?

A:

There are so many interesting projects on the horizon. I’m particularly drawn to the ones where we’re able to work closely with presenters on their session content, with a focus on storytelling and unique branded segments. I’m lucky to work with such an innovative team at Centrifuge, and I can’t wait to see those new ideas come to life.

Q:

What motivates and drives you in your day-to-day work?

A:

I love a challenge! I’m driven by the desire to distill complex information into a cohesive and compelling message, while also aligning it with a broader corporate narrative. Strategic communications are inherently challenging, which is why I’m always eager to dive in.

Q:

How do you maintain a healthy work-life balance, and do you have any tips for your peers?

A:

I love the work that I do and am energized by the amazing team that surrounds me. To maintain balance, be sure to take time outside of work to recharge with friends & family and to pursue fun, new adventures.

Q:

What advice would you give to new employees joining Centrifuge Media to thrive in their roles?

A:

Be curious and don’t hesitate to speak up! Every project gives you an opportunity to be creative, practice teamwork, embrace & initiate change, and commit to improving each day. These are our values at Centrifuge, and striving to embody them has enabled me to grow both personally and professionally during my time here.

Q:

What do you do in your role to empower our clients to inspire and motivate their audience to make a commitment to lasting behavior change?

A:

I advise executive presenters and communications teams on strategy, storytelling, and execution best practices, so they can deliver impactful messages to their audiences. My goal is always to help our clients connect on a deeper and more authentic level with their audiences because that’s where real, lasting change begins.

What Centrifuge Media colleagues have to say about Lauren Dearmore’s accomplishments over quarter 01!

“Lauren truly shined throughout the entire LuNa process and during the meeting. Not only did she create a new strategy document to use with clients but developed and directed the strategy process with all the tracks. With her direct knowledge of the presenters and presentations, she guided the final sessions when Brandon had to leave the meeting early..”

“Lauren has exemplified our company values through her tireless work with a national sales meeting. She embraced her new role of leading our strategy team while remaining steadfast and committed to closing our large program with no gaps in execution. She leveraged each asset of our team and led us to execute a fantastic meeting all while making sure her new responsibilities were also being taken care of. Juggling two major roles is no small feat but Lauren did it with style and grace and deserves the recognition.”

“Lauren is constantly taking the lead and is a driving force in everything she is involved in (which is a lot!) She is cool under pressure both from timelines and dealing with clients. The work she does in strategizing and helping our clients deliver their message is invaluable.”

“Lauren had an exceptional 1st quarter. She not only ran her first successful strategic marketing from A-Z with Lundbeck’s national sales meeting, but she also worked a great deal on the last-minute scripts and jumped in to co-produce/call a major show for Brandon that she had never done before.”

The selection process for the Employee of the Quarter is driven by nominations from fellow team members. Every quarter, employees are invited to nominate their peers who have gone above and beyond in their roles, demonstrated outstanding teamwork, or made a significant impact on the organization.

Our commitment to recognizing excellence makes this process invaluable in acknowledging those who consistently make a difference.

Q&A with Brienna Lacey: Account Manager

Brienna Lacey recently joined Centrifuge Media as an Account Manager! In between helping clients bring their visions to life, we asked a few questions about her career and interests!

Q:

What was your path to Centrifuge Media?

A:

I have been doing part time wedding and event planning for over 8 years in conjunction with being a sales account manager. I saw the opportunity to join Centrifuge Media through a former colleague and wanted to be able to pivot from part time to full time event planning while also leveraging my background in sales and communications.

Q:

What aspect of your role are you most excited about and why?

A:

I love being able to see ideas come alive. One day it’s in your head or on paper and the next day you’re walking into your creation. The interaction with the customers is always a highlight of my day.

Q:

You can offer a client one piece of advice when planning an event. what would it be and how has it proven effective in your past experiences?

A:

No ideas are off the table. THINK BIG!

Q:

What specific projects or moments have fueled your passion and kept you motivated?

A:

I am a native New Yorker so the Macy’s Day Parade is a highlight of my holiday season every year. From the first time I saw that parade I have said to myself, “I want to plan that parade one day!”

Q:

What do you like to do in your free time when you aren’t working? Any hobbies or activities you’re passionate about?

A:

I am an avid traveler! I love to see the world around me and visit new places. I am a puppy mom so I love my American Bully (Cocoa) and love hanging out with friends and family. My boyfriend and I are big movie goers and love any reason to grab popcorn!

Q:

What is inspiring you RIGHT NOW?

A:

My parents are constantly inspiring me. They have been my motivation, coach, prayer partners, and backbone my entire life and with the whirlwind that comes with life in general, they have guided me through every challenge.

Q:

You can only choose one: DJ or Live Band?

A:

Live band! I played violin growing up so I love live instruments!
