Entrepreneurship education (EE) has become ubiquitous in Canadian higher education over the last two decades. This has happened in the way that change typically occurs in higher education in this country. No one planned or anticipated this expansion, nor was any national vision or direction considered. Each provincial government, responsible for higher education policy within its borders, took its own approach to promoting (or ignoring) entrepreneurial activity in colleges and universities.

It is widely believed that empowering young people with an entrepreneurial mindset is the key to developing more entrepreneurial behaviour and preparing youth to flourish in our emerging economy. However, little data exists to show if entrepreneurial education actually leads to a more entrepreneurial mindset. This study examines the impact of PowerPlay Young Entrepreneurs (PYE), a 6-week educational program offered to students from grades 4 through 8. The program, offered by a Canadian not-for-profit organization, incorporates project based, experiential learning that fully aligns with best practice in K-12 education. The data for empirical analysis is provided by two student surveys totaling 2453 student participants and an educator survey of 44 teachers in the Surrey and Langley school districts in British Columbia, Canada.

Entrepreneurship education—the teaching of skills and cultivation of talents that students need to start businesses, identify opportunities, manage risk, and innovate in the course of their careers—is now a staple of American higher education. As recently as the 1990s, that was far from true. Over the past decade or so, however, the university teaching of entrepreneurship has come of age.

Each year our team conducts an online review of entrepreneurship programming in the largest universities (by student population) in Canada. Specifically, the review looks at the type and number of entrepreneurship-focused courses, the experiential opportunities available to students outside of the classroom, and support provided to student startups.  This year, the review looked at 27 universities in Canada.

This report summarizes these findings and reflects on the current state of entrepreneurship education and support in these institutions. It also presents three challenges for educators and administrators to consider as they move forward with programs, course design and development.

From Canadian Manufacturing:

Globally, women are less likely to benefit from entrepreneurship education and training, particularly in programs supporting high-growth enterprises.

Organizations with resources to support entrepreneurs often overlook their own organizational roles in amplifying stereotypes of entrepreneurs as primarily masculine, white and technology-focused.

Globally, women are less likely to benefit from entrepreneurship education and training, particularly in programs supporting high-growth enterprises. When entrepreneurship programs do consider inclusion, most focus on gender without considering age, ethnicity, race or other identity factors.

From an economic development perspective, the effectiveness and inclusivity of entrepreneurship programs is important as new businesses account for most net job creation…
